IN BRIEF YOUNG WIRRAL UNDERDOGS ‘ZULU’ WIN LIVERPOOL ROCKS!

PARKGATE FESTIVAL 2017

Parkgate Fest, a brand new festival of live music, food & drink, children’s entertainment, stalls and more, will take place on the weekend of 3rd & 4th June 2017.

There will be music from new, established and tribute artists, steam engines, classic cars, FootGolf, a Sheep Show, Champagne, Gin and Beer tents, street food stalls and fairground rides including a dedicated kids area for youngsters to enjoy their own space. There’ll be pony rides, fun and dancing, face painting and plenty of other exciting activities suitable for young people of all ages.

The first of its kind, the festival is being organised and delivered by residents and traders from the local area with proceeds going towards community improvement projects under the ‘Parkgate Vision’ banner.

The festival will take place on fields surrounding Marsh Nurseries off Boathouse Lane in beautiful Parkgate - Cheshire’s only coastal village.

A newly formed young Indie Rock band ‘Zulu’, from Wirral Grammar School For Boys, have beaten 27 other unsigned Merseyside bands to win the Liverpool Rocks!

Battle of the Band 2017 competition which took place over 4 stages & 10 separate nights.

After successfully passing through the previous rounds, the final was held on April 29th at the O2 Academy Liverpool, where Zulu played against the 4 other groups that were successful in reaching the final.

Zulu played an assortment of both covers and original songs to a sold-out O2 Academy. After all the groups had played, the results were announced at the end of the night and with the crowd firmly behind them, Zulu claimed 1st place as well as the £750 grand prize.

The story is all the more remarkable considering this set of gigs is the first time Zulu have played live and they only entered the competition in the first place by chance after another band had dropped out of the competition.

Many successful local bands have entered and won the competition in previous years including highly successful local band ‘The Basement Effect’ who were runners up in the 2015 event.

Zulu are next playing live at a Fusion event at The Zanzibar Club on Saturday 24th June with more gig dates to be released very shortly.

LOCAL PROFESSIONAL REACHES AWARDS FINAL Local nail professional Kate Sawley from Metamorfosis Nails & Beauty, Birkenhead is celebrating as she was named as a finalist for Gel Polish Stylist of the Year at the Scratch Stars Awards 2017.

The annual awards, presented by leading nail industry publication – Scratch Magazine – are now in their 6th year and recognise and reward outstanding talent and achievement within the professional nail industry. Kate fought off strong competition to be named as one of only 5 finalists in this highly contested category. In the next stage of the competition, Kate will attend a judging day on 15th May at The London College of Beauty Therapy where she will put her skills to the test on a live model and be interviewed by a panel of expert judges who will decide on the ultimate winner.

Kate said: “After reaching the final last year and going on to win Gel Polish Stylist of the Year 2016, I never dreamed I’d get through to the final again this year. I’m really excited to take part and meet the other finalists.” All finalists are invited to attend the Scratch Summer Party at Tropicana Beach Club, Covent Garden on Sunday 23 July 2017.

WIRRAL BIKEATHON 2017

ACCLAIMED FOLK OPERA INSPIRES SONGWRITER’S INTIMATE COMEBACK

This year’s Wirral Bikeathon will take place on Sunday 11th June 2017. It will be the 19th Wirral Bikeathon and to date the event has raised £880,000 for Bloodwise.

The Wirral Bikeathon is a 14 or 28 mile ride around the Wirral and Arrowe Country Park, which is the start, mid-point and finish area.

The terrain is on and off road following well designated roads and country paths. The event is suitable for all ages and disabilities using suitable equipment. All children must be accompanied and those under 8 are not allowed to ride independently - suitable tag-a-longs, child seats or trailers must be used. All riders are encouraged to wear helmets. Refreshments are available in the start area. The Red Room Cafe provides hot food and riders and their families can enjoy live music which is provided by Fairground Organ, Peninsula Jazzmen and the Ukulele band.

This annual event is a ride not a race so it is a great day out for families.

The route is a figure of eight loop around the Wirral with start, midpoint and finish in Arrowe Country Park. It takes in north Wirral through Caldy and the Wirral Way to West Kirby and Moreton. The second section goes from the Park to Thornton Hough, Storeton and Landican.

The 2017 Bikeathon will be very similar to previous years and will again feature a “selfie station” in the start/finish area at Arrowe Park.

This was very popular on social media last year due to the help of local Olympic Gold Medallist and cycling legend Chris Boardman - who will be joining in the race again this year!

Chris has been the patron and a huge supporter of the Bikeathon over these many years together with members of his family. Chris said: “Since the Wirral Bikeathon started 19 years ago we have raised £880,000 towards beating blood cancer. We are making a really big push for the Bikeathon in 2017 and next year and aiming to get across the £1million mark for funds raised for Bloodwise, the leading blood cancer charity. It’s a great family event so do come along and support us.”

This year the Bikeathon will take place on Sunday 11th June 2017 with start times between 9:30 and 11:30 am. Online registration is open at www.wirralbikeathon.com and costs £15 for adults and £5 for those aged 15 and under. All riders receive a Wirral Bikeathon t-shirt and a medal for crossing the finishing line.

Veteran Wirral singer/songwriter Dean Johnson is set to return to the local stage for a unique intimate solo performance.

The highly anticipated comeback after 25 years is prompted by the critical acclaim of his acoustic ‘Folk Opera’ entitled ‘The Empties’.

A mixture of narration and songs presented in a troubadour style is highly unusual. The influential Record Collector magazine have described it as ‘A rootsy Romeo & Juliet, an absolute gem’, while the BBC have praised the ‘great songwriting’.

Dean graduated from the local folk scene in the late 1970s. Guitar legend Richard Thompson was an early champion of his songwriting and performing skills. Radio Merseyside music historian Spencer Leigh has described Dean as ‘The best songwriter in Merseyside’.

A chance meeting with Chris Difford of Squeeze introduced Johnson into the mainstream, where he wrote and toured, appearing at The Royal Albert Hall and Wembley Stadium with the likes of Paul Carrack, Bryan Ferry and The Beach Boys. Dean also became an unofficial 5th member of Wet Wet Wet. But it was whilst touring with David Essex that the 70's superstar suggested Dean's songs would work in a theatrical setting. Dean turned his attention to writing stage musicals. For the first, ‘Bullets and Daffodils’, he joined forces with the much loved James Herriot/EastEnders actor Christopher Timothy, to tell the story of Birkenhead war poet Wilfred Owen. The production enjoyed West End runs and featured cast members such as Brookside's Dean Sullivan and legendary DJ Billy Butler, who described the 2014 production as ‘One of the best things I have ever been part of.’

Now in 2017, The Empties brings Dean full circle to the intimacy of the folk scene and its premiere takes place at the Bromborough Folk Club, a venue that was the scene of Dean's earliest live performances.

Hoylake born Gina Kirkham has turned her hand to writing after retiring from her career as a police officer with Merseyside Police serving on the Wirral.

Her debut novel ‘Handcuffs, Truncheon and a Polyester Thong’ has already received 5* advanced pre-publication reviews.

A launch will be held on the publication day, Thursday 18th May 6.30pm at Waterstones Liverpool One, featuring Luca Veste, author of the Murphy and Rossi crime books who will be hosting an ‘In Conversation... with Gina.’

Local Actor and Playwright Lynne Fitzgerald will be reading from the book as the main character, Mavis Upton. Tickets are available either in store or online.

Gina will also be holding book signings at Linghams Booksellers, Heswall on Saturday 20th May at 1.00pm and at a Charity Luncheon to be held at The Lawns, Thornton Hall on Monday 22nd May at 12noon in aid of Radio City Cash for Kids and Incubabies.

Award-winning Denbigh butcher Glyn Davies has appointed local butcher Alan Ainsworth to join the team at Tweedmill Shopping Outlet.

Alan, a traditional butcher with over 30 years butchering experience, will be running the fresh meat and delicatessen counter; and is committed to stocking 100% Welsh grown or supplied produce.

All our produce is very local, so it’s literally field to fork. For example the beef and pigs are raised on our award winning Lon Farm and is top quality. LIVERPOOL PRIDE 2017 Liverpool Pride Festival has revealed that acclaimed Mersey singer Marc Almond will headline the Summer 2017 event.

The former Soft Cell front man is originally from Southport. He has sold over 30 million records worldwide and is appearing at Liverpool Pride for the first time just weeks after he celebrates his 60th birthday. This is the eighth consecutive year of Liverpool Pride, a free two-day event celebrating all things LGBT. This year’s festival takes place on Saturday 29 July and Sunday 30 July 2017, returning to St George’s Quarter for the second year.

LONDON TO PARIS TRIATHLON CHALLENGE A group of six friends from Wirral are attempting the Arch 2 Arc Enduroman triathlon challenge to raise money for four charities: Alzheimers Society, Age UK Wirral, Cleft Lip and Palate Association and Mountain Rescue England and Wales.

The Enduroman Arch to Arc Triathlon is an ultra-distance triathlon. The triathlon starts with an 87-mile run (140 km) from London’s Marble Arch to Dover on the Kent coast, then a cross-channel swim (shortest distance 21 miles/33,8 km) to the French coast, and finishes with a 180-mile (289,7 km) bike from Calais to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The clock starts at Marble Arch, London and stops at Arc de Triomphe, Paris.

Two members of the team, Dr Branwell Spencer and Dr Martin Pritchard who are both Consultants in Elderly Care Medicine at Wirral University Teaching Hospital chose charities Alzheimers Society and Age UK Wirral as they work every day with patients and families affected by dementia and other illnesses that unfortunately are so very common amongst the population.

Dr Spencer said: “These are some of our most vulnerable, disadvantaged and often forgotten members of society and we are very keen to raise awareness and support the excellent charities working directly in the Wirral. This is particularly important at this time of great challenge within the Health and Social Care Services. These charities reflect a range of personal interests across the group. We are keen triathletes and have raised money for different causes over a number of years doing a range of challenges. This is a team relay event non-stop from 10 wirrallife.com

Marble Arch to Dover, a swim across the English Channel and then our final leg is a cycle from Dover to the Arc de Triomphe.

The exact start date depends on the weather window to swim the Channel to give us the best chance of crossing. We need to be on standby to get to London at short notice to start our challenge, running to Dover to get the best weather slot. We are funding this challenge entirely ourselves and hoping to raise £10,000 for our nominated charities. I would like to say thanks to West Wallasey Van Hire and Port Sunlight Trailer company for generously donating a minibus and trailer for the event.”

Brett was a Wirral born boxer who excelled at County level and coached hundreds of children and young people throughout his life. But most importantly, he was a fun, loving and caring friend to everyone around him. After a short battle with pancreatic cancer, Brett tragically passed away in February 2014 aged just 56.

All proceeds will support the Pancreatic Research Fund - the only national charity fighting pancreatic cancer on all fronts (support, information, campaigning and research) and local sports clubs (boxing and rugby) who work with children and young people.

Event organiser Liam Hanlon from Tri 4 Life and local boxing clubs are pleased to see the event becoming a major event in Wirral’s local sporting calendar.

Terry Finlay, secretary of Wallasey Amateur Boxing Club, said: “From

the outset we wanted to make it an annual event. We are hoping we can match the money we raise year on year. Brett did an awful lot for people and he was such a lovely person. He was a caring friend to everyone around him. He sponsored a football team in Africa and when he was first diagnosed, he came into the club and donated £500.”

Brett, a former Woodchurch High School pupil, was a member of Willaston and Wallasey boxing clubs and represented the North West in competitions. When he retired from competing, he spent time coaching dozens of young people in the sport.

The first 120 runners in the Brett Jones Heavyweight 10k Fun Run will receive a commemorative t-shirt and trophies will be presented to the first man and woman to finish. All entrants can take advantage of The Underground Training Station Warm Up - a free pre and post-run massage from Massage for Life and Lindsey Hughes Sports Massage Therapy & Rehabilitation.

Money raised from the run will be donated to the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund at a presentation evening at Prenton Rugby Club on 24th June 2017.

This year’s junior run will start at 9.30am and the 10K at 10.30am from Hoylake Community Centre on Hoyle Road, Hoylake.

Entry to the run is £10 in advance or £15 on the day.

WORK STARTS ON MAJOR REBUILD PROJECT OF WIRRAL VET SURGERY Work has started to rebuild a Wirral veterinary surgery as part of a major modernisation project to create a state-of-the-art facility for pets across the region.

The transformed Acorn Veterinary Centre in Acacia Grove, West Kirby, run by the independently-owned Willows Veterinary Group, will employ 19 people, which will include the creation of two new jobs, and is expected to be completed later in the summer.

The former buildings attached to the end-of-terrace threestorey Victorian town house, which once housed a family printing firm and forms part of the surgery, have been demolished to make way for a modern, glass-fronted 3,000 sq ft single storey building. For the time-being, the surgery has a temporary home at Hillcroft Farm in Frankby Road, Frankby.

The whole team are looking forward to welcoming four-legged clients and their owners to the new purposebuilt practice which is being built by local firm JFW Construction of Bebington. The new practice will house three consultation rooms, a double theatre, an imagery suite which will house X-ray, ultrasound, endoscopy and ECG equipment. There will also be a designated feline and canine dental theatre which will also have its own digital X-ray system. The number of parking spaces will double from three to six.

Head Vet Tom McGowan, a father-of-two who lives in Heswall and is originally from Arkansas in the US, said: “The new practice is going to be open-plan and airy with lots of light and high ceilings but it will have a familiar feel with the same team working hard to look after our clients which I think will be really reassuring to them. We are all extremely excited that work is underway. The surgery has been in the local community for 30 years and it is great to be overseeing a project to revitalise it for many more years to come. TOP WIRRAL SAILOR BACK IN HIS BOAT A top Wirral yachtsman will compete in the world championships again this summer after specialists helped him make a remarkable recovery from career-ending injuries.

Will Thompson feared his sailing days were over when agonising pain in his back and elbow made getting into a boat impossible.

In desperation he turned to the Spire Murrayfield Hospital in Heswall for specialist physiotherapy and this summer the 47-yearold from West Kirby will be taking to the waters of the Baltic Sea on his Dart 18 catamaran when the world championships are held in Germany. He said: “It’s all down to the physiotherapy team at Spire Murrayfield Hospital – two years ago I honestly didn’t think I’d sail again but they’ve got me back in the boat. The treatment and advice has been brilliant, I didn’t need surgery and now I’m sailing again and I’m competitive again.”

Will added: “I could barely walk, I couldn’t sail and I thought it was the end. I had even written out the advert to sell the boat and had just about hung up my life jacket. When I got the injury I just thought I’d go to the place that will fix it and that’s Spire and they did. Thanks to Christopher and his team it’s fixed.

I’m completely pain free and when I developed a tennis elbow problem, probably from hauling on the ropes, they sorted that out too. I’m incredibly grateful to them. I’ve had a new lease of life. I don’t know what I’d have done if I couldn’t sail any more.”

Will is back sailing at least every fortnight again now on the waters between the Wirral and the Flintshire coast and the man who began sailing at the age of six is relieved that he’s again able to pass on his experience to his 14-year-old son, Billy. He said: “You have to be fit to sail because there’s a lot that can go wrong and you need to be fit to be safe or you’ll be going for a swim.

This is a fantastic place to sail. There’s some of the best sailing in the world here, strong winds, big tides and big waves too, a great place to learn. We’ve got the UK Championships here in August and there will 75 boats out on the water and I’ll be in one of them - which recently I wouldn’t have thought would’ve been possible.

Already the graphic designer and vice-commodore of Dee Sailing Club at Thurstaston has added the UK national inland title to a string of yachting successes across the world which include second place in the world championships in 1995, coincidentally also in Germany and on the Baltic. Two weeks after the world championships Will has another big date on his sailing calendar when Dee Sailing Club host the UK Championships in August when he will be competing when he had feared he would just be a spectator.

Physiotherapy Manager Christopher Buckley, who used to work with Aston Villa’s academy footballers, said: “When Will came to us he was suffering from a suspected herniated disc’ also known as a slipped disc or disc prolapse in his lower back. Dee Sailing Club was founded 107 years ago and has 275 members (the oldest in their 80’s) and with a thriving junior section. They will host the UK Championships over four days of racing from Thursday August 24 to Sunday August 27.

AN INTERVIEW WITH PETER BIBBY Wirral Life talk to Wirral’s Peter Bibby of Liverpool’s legendary Bibby Line Group Limited on family history, business and his love of Wirral.

The Bibby Line, the world’s oldest family owned shipping company and the UK’s largest family owned distribution company, was founded in 1807 by the first John Bibby (1775–1840). He was a penniless Eccleston farmer - who aged 25, came to Liverpool to become a ship’s iron merchant. He spotted an opportunity and tried his hand at shipping to reach overseas markets.

He became very successful before he was brutally murdered for his pocket watch aged 65. The business then passed to his sons, who continued to successfully develop the business, which has continued as a shipping line to this day.

the young Bibby disagreed: in future years he was prepared to borrow money, a calculated risk which some believe secured the long-term future of the business. In 1986 Bibby succeeded in the baronetcy on the death of his father. Six years later, aged 70, he became honorary president of the group. Derek Bibby’s other main interest was the Birkenhead Boys’ Club, which he supported from 1953 until his death. He married, in 1961, Christine Okell, daughter of the Bishop of Stockport. They had four sons and a daughter and resided in Wirral.

After some seriously stormy waters in the mid-1980s, the Bibby brand intelligently diversified into financial services, haulage, retail and private-equity-style investments in businesses. This helped it to survive and grow while local rivals, such as Cunard and White Star, disappeared or were swallowed up by others.

Bibby Line Group today is headed by the sixth generation of the Bibby family, and is a £1.2 billion business, operating in more than 20 countries and employing over 4,500 people in industries including retail, offshore, financial services, distribution, shipping, marine based businesses, and plant hire.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I would consider myself a fun loving person, who enjoys a challenge but lives a modest life, working hard and playing hard. I lived in Willaston until my mum sold the family home and made me homeless at nearly 40, then I went from being young free and single to married with children in 2 years. I am equally as at home at a lock-in in a rough Birkenhead pub as a black tie ball at the polo club.

Peter’s Father, Sir Derek James Bibby was born at Hooton in 1922. He was the son of Major Sir Harold Bibby, who was created a baronet in 1959. From 1935 to 1969 Sir Harold was chairman of Bibby Line; he was also Deputy Lieutenant for Cheshire and High Sheriff in 1934-5. After Rugby and Trinity College, Oxford, where he read Economics, Derek Bibby joined the Royal Artillery in the New Year of 1942. He was commissioned a few days before his 20th birthday, and his unit was posted to 331 battery of 133 Field Regiment of the 53rd Welsh Division. For almost two years they were employed on exercises at artillery ranges around Britain. Bibby fought through Belgium and Holland, once getting lost in a minefield in thick fog, and on to Germany. After the war Bibby joined the family business and was the fifth generation to do so. On his first day his father called him into his office and told the new recruit: “Never borrow any money, so that you can never go broke”. But

Peter Bibby is the son of Sir Derek Bibby and great-great-greatgrandson of the founder. Wirral Life talk to Peter in a very down to earth interview.

Your dad encouraged you all to get different jobs first and make your own way, before deciding if you wanted to work for the family business. How did your story begin?

After University I didn’t want to become an accountant like my brothers and sister but wanted to go into industry and became a management trainee with British Rail. I was then offered a job to run a small lifejacket company on Merseyside, which was going bust, it was an opportunity to get some experience and potentially make good – we turned it into the World’s largest manufacturer of marine inflatable lifejackets. Having turned it around I was approached by a watersports company, Typhoon, which was also in financial trouble and we took it to become the world’s largest manufacturer of drysuits. I also helped turnaround Downland Bedding in Liverpool growing it from £3m to £15m, Denbridge Marine based in Birkenhead, Jarmac Oil based in Eastham and Garic based in Bury. After running Typhoon for 20 years I sold the business and left there last year.

I have purchased my next business venture, British Bespoke Workwear, which manufactures aprons, tabards, chef jackets etc as well as embroidering or printing workwear for the likes of Morrisons supermarket and local Councils. This is my latest challenge.

We’ve only just scratched the surface on your fascinating family history, what values have been passed down?

There are many values passed down from our parents, which can be seen in us as individuals as well as in the business.

Giving Something Back (GSB) – not only are all 5 children directly involved in charitable activities but the family business has run a GSB scheme for the last 10 years with its staff, donating nearly £10m to charities. We have been brought up to help those less fortunate than ourselves.

Integrity - we were brought up to act with integrity and treat others as we would expect to be treated. The family name and reputation is worth more than making ‘an extra buck’ here and there and again this is part of the business culture and values.

Value – we are known for not spending our money (my VW car has done 275,000 miles and won’t be replaced until it gives up) and I’m always looking for efficiencies and improvements.

Loyalty and pride are also characteristics that I think are undervalued, be it to your staff, company, local football club or country – this attribute is invaluable but needs to be two way.

As a 6th generation family business, we own the business technically - but in reality we are just custodians of the business and it is only ours to pass onto the next generation.

Are you still involved in the day to day running of Bibby Line or do you have other business interests?

I don’t work for the family business directly as I have my own businesses, but I do project work for Bibby Line Group, such as running one of their smaller subsidiary companies, Garic, which needed turning around and growing, and once put on the right path (turnover was 30% up on previous year) we recruited a full time MD, as I couldn’t do it full time due to my other businesses. In truth, although we are all very proud of the family business, it is so large it is very corporate and I am too used to running my own business without a lot of corporate rules and governance – I prefer to get on and do it, rather than reporting and discussing it!

Your dad stepped in to save Birkenhead Boys Club from closure because of his belief it could make a massive difference to the local community in 1953 when he was 31 - earning respect from the local lads by teaching them Judo and other real life unconventional self-defence moves, he’d learned in WW2. Derek literally helped turn the corner for the place as it struggled to survive after the war, by moving them to a much bigger and better place. The club was aptly renamed in 2004 “The Derek Bibby Centre” to commemorate his time and generosity. Both you and your brother Geoffrey are now responsible for the running of the club continuing your dad’s legacy, tell us more…

The Youth Club is a great facility in central Birkenhead, with lots of activities, 2 outdoor 5-a-side pitches and 2 indoor gyms (one full of trampolines and free running). We have nearly 1,000 members with up to 100 per night in attendance, along with 12 football teams playing at the weekend. All thanks to private donors and lots of volunteers, as we run on a small budget and need to raise £20,000 a year. Most kids have limited experiences as the following example at the weekly barbecues during the summer holiday at our home revealed: When playing on the manicured lawn, called “the back yard”, I was asked where we buy all the birds in the trees from. Trying to explain that apples grow on trees not trays and you can eat them off the tree was also pretty tricky. We at least give them wider experiences and opportunities to develop, which many of us take for granted.

With so many aspects to your businesses keeping you busy, how do you relax?

I don’t do relaxing very well, as I don’t read books, watch TV/ films or sit around. My hobbies are activity and people based – football, tennis, cricket, dancing and parties! Much to the disbelief of the people I meet out partying - I don’t drink – I am mad enough without it!

Do you and your siblings, Michael, Geoffrey, David and Jennifer get together for family occasions often?

Yes, we all meet up for family occasions, which with 13 children between us, are now rather large affairs.

You have resided in Wirral for many years, what are your favourite things about the Wirral?

It is a great place to live as everything is so close and well connected, within 45 minutes there are beaches, hills, four major cities, two international airports and you can even be in London in just over 2 hours. There is something for everyone with the countryside, beaches, and plenty of sporting and social activities. The best thing about the Wirral is the people – everyone is so friendly and being a defined area everyone knows everyone and so it is easy to make friends and meet new people – as my wife found when she moved up from London (she was used to a city full of strangers) and was soon telling me who people were!

As a Founder Patron of new Wirral Youth Zone, The Hive, how did you get involved?

I have run the Birkenhead Youth Club for 20 years. 9 years ago I visited the Bolton Lads and Girls Club, which set a new standard for Youth Clubs, and came away wanting a similar one for the Wirral. Luckily an organisation called Onside was set up to build more of these clubs. So we worked on the Council and eventually got them on board, the Fire station donated the land and then we had to raise £6m – I said no chance, we should scale it back. But Onside set about helping to raise this money and incredibly raised it, then also raised the first 3 years of running costs. Design, planning, build, recruitment, etc, all begun to happen until we finally arrived at The Hive – far better than I ever imagined. With over 3,000 members in 3 weeks and 300 to 400 young people attending every day, it is incredible and makes it all worthwhile. We try to compliment existing facilities and clubs and in doing so the Birkenhead Youth Club continues to thrive as well as The Hive.

W L Where is your favourite holiday destination?

I am more than happy with a week in North Wales in the summer or a weekend in autumn, doing activities and meeting people.

I am no good at sitting on a sun lounger and having travelled with work, I am quite happy to not get on a plane.

Sea dog or sea sick?

A bit of both. My first work experience job was to work on a ship going from Scotland to Europe with a Spanish crew. As 6th generation of a shipping family I was mortified to be seasick most of my time at sea – I blamed the Spanish food! However, I do enjoy sailing small sailboats when I can, but haven’t been offshore since my work experience!

Where do you like to eat out? If so where?

Again, I am rather dull on my likes - I can say that I am plain and simple. I am happy with a burger and chips, with a roast or a steak being a treat. Leila, my wife, is a foodie so this does cause a bit of trouble – I charm her with a carvery! She has to go for exotic food with someone else (unless it’s with meat & two veg).

What’s your guilty pleasure?

No guilt – just chocolate. Cola, chocolate and I am buzzing!

Pet hate – waste. I can’t stand waste, be it space, time, wasting paper, anything. I love recycling and take home rubbish to recycle.

Looking to the future, what is important to you and what else would you like to achieve?

The thing that is important to me is making people happy and doing things that can achieve that. So when I have made money I have put it into a Charitable Trust, which I use to support people to help them achieve their worthy cause. There are so many people working so hard to improve things, such as Ema at Neo Café, who works tirelessly to feed Wirral children in poverty, Kevin Allen (aka Banana man), who helps feed starving orphans in South Africa and of course the staff and volunteers at both Birkenhead Youth Club and the Hive. There are too many good causes to support them all, so I help where I can personally see the difference. A fine example is this month (Sunday 14th May) when the Oxton Secret Gardens, which attracts thousands of visitors to see over 20 gardens and donates the income to local charities. It is run by volunteers and I do my small bit by driving the minibus from the free car park to the village - everyone has time and so everyone can donate in their own small way.

What would your one piece of business wisdom be?

Assuming you have a product that will sell, then it’s all about managing the people. In every business that I have turned around, I have done it with the same people and just refocused them accordingly. Make sure that you have each area of the business covered (sales, finance, operations, product knowledge/ technical/quality) because if one of these areas is poor the business will probably fail at some stage. Maximise people’s strengths and minimise their weaknesses - I know my own weaknesses so I minimise them by asking the right people the right questions. Keep your staff informed and explain decisions, otherwise they will be become disengaged and assume the worst – the easiest time to motivate people and get them pulling in the same direction is when you are in trouble. WIRRAL BIRDS Hugh Stewart, Vice Chair of Wirral Bird Club gives us the lowdown on Wirral Birds to watch out for.

Wirral is a great place for watching wild birds with the Dee Estuary especially hosting internationally and nationally important numbers of several wader and wildfowl species. The estuary has been designated a Ramsar site and Special Protection Area status. The North Wirral foreshore and the Mersey are also rich habitats. Then there are the woods, farmland and heaths for further habitat variety.

Some birds are resident all year, like the familiar Blackbird, Robin and Blue Tit. Other species such as Dunlin, Knot and Curlew come to the Wirral to spend the winter feeding on the salt marshes. The Purple Sandpiper is a less common but notable visitor, found on the rocky shore of Hilbre Island.

Other birds migrate to the Dee to breed during the spring and summer. Avocets used to be limited to south and east England, but they are now slowly colonising the northwest, with a stronghold at the Burton Mere Wetlands RSPB reserve. Last year, 35 nests produced 73 chicks, a great success. Little Egrets, once scarce in Britain are now numerous on the Wirral.

Wirral's location on the East Atlantic migration flyway, and with the Dee and Mersey rivers either side, mean that rare birds may turn up during migration time. They often are only seen briefly flying overhead, or maybe just stopping for a few hours. One has to be quick to see these scarcities in case they move on quickly!

A couple of winters ago, an American species called a Laughing Gull turned up at New Brighton and stayed for several weeks. Twitchers came from all over Britain to see it! Other recent scarce birds have included a White-tailed Eagle and a Black-winged Pratincole.

China, but birds were imported into the UK in the past for private collections. Inevitably some escaped and there is now an increasing breeding population. Ironically their numbers are under threat from loss of habitat in China.

About Wirral Bird Club Wirral Bird Club caters for all who have a common interest in wild birds - from the mildly curious to the keen, from the beginner to the experienced - all are welcome.

The aim of the club is to promote a general appreciation of bird watching, and in particular to provide opportunities for members to share their common interest in birds and to increase their knowledge of birds through a programme of meetings, lectures and visits to interesting bird watching sites.

Wirral Bird Club also supports national and local organisations concerned with the protection of birds and the conservation of bird habitats.

Monthly indoor meetings are held at 8pm on the fourth Thursday of each month (apart from August and December) at Kingsmead School Hall, Hoylake. Guest speakers offer illustrated presentations on a wide variety of bird-related topics.

Visitors are very welcome and the charge is £4.00, which includes light refreshments.

Outdoor field meetings are held most months of the year.

Many field meetings are held on the Wirral, but also involve trips, some by coach to sites of particular interest.

THE MANOR GATEHOUSE CLUB What do Artists, Gardeners, Ramblers, Travellers, Readers and Writers all have in common? The answer is that they all are or could be members of the Manor Gatehouse Club.

Formed in September 1983 when Shell, ICI and Unilever offered early retirement to many staff, but now open to all, the club has some 200 members who enjoy an active lifestyle and meet for social occasions.

At first, meetings were held in the Gatehouse of Burton Manor – hence the Club’s name. However, membership soon outgrew that venue so it now meets in the Gladstone Village Hall, Burton.

Every month (except August) there is a general meeting, forthcoming topics include Offa’s Dyke - our local history (July 6th, 2:30pm), Builders, Bankers and Bankrupts - People who made Liverpool famous (September 7th 2:30pm), Don't Forget your Ration Book! (October 5th 2:30pm) and visits are organised to places of interest such as Airbus and The Mersey Tunnel.

The special interests of members are catered for by a number of groups. The artists meet every first and third week each month to discuss their work and help each other. They also hold an annual exhibition in Gladstone Village Hall (1st October this year) which is well worth a visit. The standard of work is very high and some of the pictures are offered for sale. Put a note of the date in your diary!

Throughout the summer the gardeners visit different gardens; forthcoming visits include Gilfach, Conway Valley (July), Clover Bank Organic Farm Congleton (August) and Biddulph Grange (September).

The ramblers are perhaps the most adventurous group, meeting every week to walk somewhere in the North West and North Wales. Walks are graded from short with a pub lunch to in excess of 10 miles and 3000ft of ascent. They also organise walking holidays in the Lake District in April and abroad in either May or mid-summer. This year it is Croatia.

From September to March, the travel group meet to listen to an illustrated talk on the adventures of members and others who have wandered the world. There have been talks on Peru, a Grand Tour of China, Provence, Canada and many other places.

It often makes one want to go out there to visit oneself!

The literary group are multi-talented; in recent years the annual pantomime has been written produced and acted by members, much to the amusement of the Christmas Party audience. Quite how Tinkerbell manage to appear in The Pied Piper of Hamlin and Robin Hood as well as Peter Pan is something of a mystery, but thoroughly enjoyable! A recent meeting was devoted to writing limericks, one of which was: Three pretty young lassies from Parkgate Came to Burton a’seeking a mate They went not to the pub But the esteemed Gatehouse Club But alas they arrived much too late’ For those who enjoy conversation in a convivial environment, the monthly luncheon group meet in a local public house on the first Monday of the month. THE BUTCHERS CUT

Stephen Muff of Muff’s of Bromborough shares with us his delicious slow cooked pork recipe.

Show Stopping Chinese Belly Pork with Crackling Ingredients Whole belly pork. Ask the butcher to remove and score the skin and saw through the middle of the bones to make it easier to carve.

2tbsp light soy 1tbsp dark soy 2 tbsp Shaoxing wine 1 tsp chilli paste 2 tsp Chinese five spice 2 star anise 3 tsp sugar 2 tsp salt For the sauce Bunch spring onion Knob of ginger 4 clove garlic 2tbsp sugar 2tbsp yellow bean sauce/paste 2tbsp hoisin 2tbsp oyster sauce 2tbsp chilli paste 2tbsp Shaoxing wine 1tbsp sesame oil 2tbsp honey

Method • Take the skinless belly and score the fat deeply in a criss cross pattern and place on a large baking tray. Place the scored pig skin on a seperate tray.

• In a pestle and mortar, grind star anise then combine all the ingredients to make a paste.

• Rub in the paste all over the belly getting into all the cuts.

• Season the pig skin with salt.

• In a preheated oven at 180oC place both trays in for 15 minutes. Then take the belly out and cover with foil. Reduce temperature to 1600C and put back in.

Depending on how dry the crackling is, it should take a further 30 – 40 minutes. The belly pork will take a further 1hour 30min.

• When finished remove and let it cool.

The Sauce • Stir fry the ginger garlic and spring onion in some oil. Flambé the wine. Then add all other ingredients and simmer for a couple of minutes while stirring.

To Finish • Slice through the ribs on the belly and either pan fry/BBQ for a minute each side and liberally brush with the sauce. Arrange on a platter and break up the crackling and scatter around. Garnish with spring onion.

WHISKY ‘UNDERSTANDING THE LABEL’

A bottle of whisky displays a number of different terms from single-malt to blended, cask strength to non-chill filtered and what does PPM mean?

Whisky is produced all over the world and every county has its own terms, regulations and laws, I am looking here specifically at Scottish whisky terms although most of them are similar worldwide.

Let’s start with the spelling - producers in Scotland prefer to spell whisky without the ‘e’ whereas American and Ireland tend to spell it Whiskey.

Legend has it that during the 1800’s, Scotch whisky was considered low quality so American and Irish distillers began adding the “e” in order to show a point of distinction and that the quality of their whiskey was higher. Today, it’s little more than a regional tradition.

‘Scotch’ means simply that the whisky was distilled and matured in Scotland.

‘Malt whisky’ is simply a whisky containing only malted barley and water. No other cereal grains are used in its production.

‘Grain whisky’ is a whisky made of cereal grains such as corn, wheat, or rye. It may contain some barley malt. Grain whisky is seldom sold on its own in Scotland; it’s used primarily to be mixed with malt whisky, for use in blended whiskies.

There is a massive misconception that because a certain whisky is labelled “single malt” that it must be the product of just a single batch or barrel, however this is not true and most single malts are in fact a blend, but it’s a very specific type of blend in that they are a mixture of whiskies distilled at different times, in different batches, and even of different ages.

A single malt whisky is made of 100% malted barley and the important feature is that it is from just one single distillery location. Not the product of a single batch or a single barrel, but a single distillery. For example, a single-malt Bruichladdich may contain whiskies from many barrels and different ages, but it will contain only whisky produced at Bruichladdich.

A blended whisky is made by blending together any number of single malt whiskies and grain whiskies to create the required flavour and characteristics. These whiskies can be from different distilleries and be of different ages and legally,

a blended Scotch is a mixture of malt and grain whiskies.

Think Chivas Regal, Dewar’s and Johnnie Walker.

Under the Scotch whisky regulations “Blended Malt Scotch Whisky” means a blend of two or more Single Malt Scotch Whiskies that have been distilled at more than one distillery; “Blended Scotch Whisky” means a blend of one or more Single Malt Scotch Whiskies with one or more Single Grain Scotch Whiskies.

Single Cask whisky is where each bottle comes from an individual ageing barrel, instead of being created by blending together the contents of various barrels, this is where you get limited edition small number bottling’s.

Cask Strength relates to the strength of whisky as it comes from the cask and it can be anything between 40% and 65% ABV, depending on age. Most whiskies are brought down to a standard ABV of around 40%, by adding water before bottling so that each batch is consistent. However, a cask strength whisky is bottled at the strength at which it’s drawn from the cask.

You may see the term ‘Non Chill filtered’ on a bottle, non chill filtered whisky that is 46% ABV or lower will go cloudy when chilled with water or ice.

Chill-filtration is a method of filtering whisky to remove this residue and cloudiness. The process involves the whisky being chilled, the natural substances coagulate and are then removed by being passed through a series of metal meshes.

This method is highly controversial for it is said to remove flavour and body from the whisky.

PPM is the abbreviation of Parts Per Million – the scientific measurement for showing the amount of phenols present in a whisky. It’s basically a measurement to tell us how peaty a whisky is going to be.

A whisky picks up its peaty flavours and medicinal smells from the grain, which has been dried out over burning peat, the grain takes on the taste and smell and this transfers to the finished whisky. For peaty whisky, look for Islay whisky and especially Bruchladdich who produce the ‘Octomore range’ which has a PPM up to 200 compared to laphroaig at around 45ppm.

The age statement on the bottle gives the age of the youngest component of the whisky; this stops at bottling so a 12-yearold whisky bottled 4 years ago is still a 12-year-old. More distilleries are opting away from age statements these days, as a good whisky doesn’t have to be an old whisky.

by Nicky Rigby-Smith & Si Hall Dubbed as West Kirby’s seafood destination, West 34 is a charming restaurant where smart and courteous blackaproned waiters whisk about in the airy, under the sea themed dining room, creating an eye-catching start to a memorable meal.

an ice platter, the show stopping dish came with lobster, crab, razor clams, oysters, langoustines and mussels. Every element was perfectly cooked, juicy lobster cooked in garlic, crab with tarragon the freshest oysters served with a gorgeous raspberry vinaigrette oil – it was outstanding - Seafood heaven on ice.

The decor is stylish, as you’d expect given the setting; polished wooden floors with luxurious turquoise velvet seating and a lovely calm ambience. Seated in a booth by restaurant manager Stuart, we were presented with the extensive wine list and offered complimentary homemade breads, which are produced daily in house by Head Chef Terry. The mix of freshly baked sourdough and focaccia breads were delicious, accompanied with a fabulous smoked cod roe butter. Divine.

Feeling incredibly spoilt by our hosts with the excellent food and wine, mains would not disappoint. We opted for the Lemon Sole, Tuna Puttanessca and Red Mullet. The Lemon Sole was served on a bed of minted new potatoes and asparagus – it was fresh, perfectly cooked and full of flavour. The Tuna Puttanessca, was a generously proportioned seared tuna steak accompanied in a rich tomato and caper sauce. Just delicious.

The Red Mullet presented beautifully was served with crispy kale, coconut rice and a rum butter – just perfect!

For starters, we opted for Skagen Prawns, Rhubarb & Scallop crumble, Fishy hors d’oeuvre and Bang Bang Chicken. The Skagen prawns, a perfect dish for a summer’s day, was served with a dill mayonnaise which complimented the prawns perfectly. The scallops were excellent and deceivingly filling.

The hors d’oeuvre, which change on a daily basis, consisted of Tempura Seabass, Mini Crab tarts, Mini Tuna salad, avocado, radish and Anchovies coated in sesame seeds – truly delicious and excellent value priced at only £8 for the entire dish! The Bang Bang Chicken was cleverly seasoned with a chilli, peanut and lime sauce and on a bed of crunchy Asian salad – great depth to a great dish.

For dessert, we ordered the baked plum in Marsala – wow! The juicy pear was perfectly cooked and served with cinnamon cream and a pistachio crumb – an amazing taste combination.

To finish our afternoon, we ordered two cocktails: the Raspberry and White Chocolate Cheesecake and the Los Mojados Recompensa. The cheesecake tasted like cheesecake!

It was sweet, light and creamy – perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth! The Los Mojados Recompensa came served with a hand rolled cigarette with a lovely Cuban origin story (smoking optional).

From the wine list, we paired our starters with an Italian 2015 Pinot Grigio Rosato – summery, light and full of flavours.

Followed by a French 2015 Picpoul de Pinet Coteaux du Languedoc – a wine you could drink at any time. This was crisp, clean and a great all -rounder!

Overall, we had an exceptional experience at West 34 and would most definitely recommend. A delightful environment, warm and friendly team and outstanding food (and all very reasonably priced) - you can’t go wrong. It is ideal for any occasion!

When I write my article each month I try to imagine what you’ll be doing when you’re reading it. Are you sitting in an Andrew Collinge hair salon waiting for one of the stylists to work their magic, or have you picked up a copy of the magazine at the station to read on the train during your daily commute?

Perhaps you’re gazing out of the train window right now on a gloriously sunny day wishing you were going anywhere but the office. You may even be tempted to jump on a different train just to see where it ends up. If so, let me suggest you catch the train to Birkdale. No, I’m not directing you to the world famous Royal Birkdale Golf Club, instead I’m letting you in on a little Gastro Grazer secret, a hidden gem of a local restaurant called Bistrot Vérité, that serves delicious food with a French twist.

The first thing you’ll notice when walking through the door is the buzz of everybody chatting and laughing, and having a great time. Then your nose will detect some amazing aromas drifting out of the kitchen from where Chef Patron Marc Vérité, and his son Jacques, assisted by a small talented team are cooking a feast of delights.

One of Marc’s absolute classic starters is Steak Tartare, and is a favourite of mine because the beef is always beautifully tender, coarsely chopped, mixed with a hint of tabasco to give it a bite, and topped off with a perfect egg yolk.

At the moment, Formby Asparagus is in season so who

could resist a plateful of succulent spears served warm with Prosciutto, Crispy Hens Egg & Hollandaise. Then, to follow, how about a bowl of the best Bouillabaisse this side of Marseille.

At lunchtime, light bites are also available, such as Beef Burger, Melting Brie & Fries or if you’re watching your waistline maybe go for a Smoked Salmon, Pickled Pear and Walnut open sandwich (call it a Tartine if you want to see a big smile on Marc’s face).

From the dinner menu, you could start with a Crab Thermidor, and if you are anything like me, for main course you will have your heart set on a Chateaubriand to share, washed down with a fine bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Whatever you choose for lunch or dinner be sure to leave room for dessert, as Marc’s dad and local legend Claude was a phenomenal pâtissier, and the apple didn’t fall far from the Tatin. I have several favourites, including the sublime Eton Mess, one of those light as air Profiteroles, or a flaming Crêpe Suzette.

The daily changing menu makes full use of the best and freshest ingredients, which are served with the warmest of welcomes by Marc’s wife Michaela and her ever friendly front of house team.

Don’t tell anyone but I hate florals, I really do, they have no place in the home, they belong in the garden, in the park, anywhere outside but not in the house! SLOW YOUR BREATHING...

BY JOEL JELEN OF RESET BREATHING I recently read a report coming out of Stanford University in the States that shows how slow breathing induces tranquillity - and frenetic and rapid breathing creates tension.

Why? Well, scientists have identified a small group of neurons that communicates goings-on in the brain's respiratory control centre. I'm guessing that most of us aren't so interested in why, but how many of us focus on our breathing and allow it to determine how we feel?

For example, you feel stressed. Slow your breathing (once you know how) and watch the change in how you feel!

Ok, sounds simple but hear me out.

The power of the breath is very apparent in this instance but did you know it can regulate so many other functions in the body that we take for granted? Perhaps, naturally.

I recommend everybody pays far more attention to their daily breathing habits and slows their rate of breathing (again, once they know how). Who wouldn't want to feel more tranquil?

I've encouraged lots of people, in fact, whole companies and organisations to do this as part of our Workplace Wellbeing programmes that helps relax teams with a view to increasing their relaxation and productivity.

I always begin the conversation by starting with almost everybody’s favourite subject - food.

All food increases breathing. For example, how do you feel after eating too much food? Frequent sighing or even breathless?

Throughout evolution, our diet consisted of 95% alkaline and 5% acid forming foods. Nowadays the reverse is true!

In an attempt to maintain ph levels and keep the body in balance, the body stimulates overbreathing. Processed foods also cause us to increase our breathing. Increase your alkaline intake and you will help keep your breathing pace and volume to a healthier level. Alkaline foods are breathing-friendly foods!

I’m often asked in workshops by people who suffer from food intolerances how this affects breathing. You can't look at a restaurant menu without the words 'gluten-free' jumping out at you, can you?

However, it's not just gluten if you're sensitive, that will increase your breathing. Chocolate, milk, eggs, dairy, citrus and red wine are the other common offenders that can create, amongst other symptoms, overbreathing... mostly because they affect the sinuses. The worst offender (don't hate me) is usually chocolate!

Raw food, currently trending, is also more effective in creating a calm breathing environment within the body than cooked foods... thank heavens for the onset of summer!

To conclude, a poor diet consisting of processed, acidic foods and foods you are intolerant to - will increase your breathing. Try to keep an eye on your breathing habits during eating and drinking as you might find yourself drawing in large breaths between bites. Keep your breathing quiet and also breathe through your nose at mealtimes – apart from it being good for your breathing and health, it's far more polite too!

“I THINK I HAVE A HERNIA - BUT WHAT IS IT AND WHAT CAN BE DONE?”

BY CONOR MAGEE MD FRCS, CONSULTANT SURGEON As a surgeon, I am reminded every day of the marvel that is the human body. I can perform complex surgery and the body will heal itself - often to the point where the scars have faded to near-invisibility. But the body is by no means perfect, the evolution of our anatomy over millions of years has left its mark with a variety of “odd bits” and also some weak points.

The most visible shortcoming of the body I see are hernias.

These are weaknesses in the abdominal wall which give rise to lumps that can be uncomfortable or less frequently can be lifethreatening. Rupture is a term that seems to have disappeared from common medical usage - but I doubt there is a better descriptive term for what a patient feels when they present with what we now call a “hernia”.

The abdomen is the favoured site for hernia’s to develop - and men are much more prone to them than women. The most likely site for a hernia is in the groin - a condition known as an “inguinal hernia”. Men develop inguinal hernias because the groin is the site of an evolutionary and anatomical curiosity caused by their testicles. As a foetus the testicles don’t live in the scrotum but are found near the kidneys. Over time the foetus develops and the testicles move through the abdomen and the muscles of the groin into the scrotum, dragging their blood supply with them. The path they take (the “inguinal canal”) remains a potential weak area and can become so weak that the abdominal contents can protrude through it - causing an inguinal hernia. Usually patients can describe when the hernia presented - often following unexpected exertion or lifting a heavy weight. Inguinal hernias can be small but if left untreated can become much larger and difficult to conceal. Many of my patients have been too embarrassed to wear shorts or swim with their children and in extreme cases the hernia can interfere with intercourse or urination. It is always a privilege to fix these hernia’s and see patients get their lives back afterwards.

Fortunately, women (not having testicles) don’t suffer as much with inguinal hernias. However, this is not a reason to be complacent because the wider female pelvis (to help with childbirth) increases the chances of a rarer type of groin hernia called a “femoral hernia.” This type of hernia is rather sneaky and can rapidly present as an emergency needing surgery and it is crucial that any groin lump in a lady needs review by a surgeon. In fact, a surgeon is the best person to assess all unusual lumps and can recommend treatment if needed.

There are other places that hernias can develop - notably around the belly button (umbilical hernia) and sometimes inside the abdomen (hiatal hernia).

Hernia’s can be uncomfortable and interfere with daily activities - golf can be an especial problem with inguinal hernias and they can limit your ability to do your job. What I do worry about is a strangulated hernia. This is a surgical emergency - simply put the hernia pops out but doesn’t go back in. It becomes more painful and the contents of the hernia can become gangrenousa life threatening situation requiring emergency surgery.

Although most hernias are unlikely to strangulate it is much better to fix them before they become problematic. Despite the enormous healing properties of the human body hernia’s will not fix themselves and the only effective treatment is surgery.

Many readers may remember hernia surgery from the past where patients had huge cuts, followed by 2 weeks in hospital on strict bed rest and then the hernia coming back! This is not the case today. Today the operation takes around 30 minutes and patients are expected to go home that day and be driving within a week. The technique we use involves placing a very expensive specialized mesh to reinforce the weakness in the abdominal wall- we can even do the operation using keyhole surgery! No matter how clever dentistry gets, until we can grow and implant teeth – your natural gnashers are your best bet!

saliva flow is greatly reduced overnight in line with your bodies’ normal rhythm. Of course, there are extra bits you can do on top.

The cornerstones to excellent dental health for your teeth and gums are your mouth care regime and regular visits for you and your family to see your general dentist – as the mouth is the often the first place signs of general illness arise.

There is good evidence supporting specific mouthwashes for certain functions. Essential oil mouthwashes like Listerene are clinically proven to help with plaque reduction and recolonisation but should probably be used before toothbrushing – otherwise will wash away the fluoride and its protective effect. Both fluoride mouthwashes and chlorhexidine gluconate (Corsodyl) should be used at different times to toothbrushing.

Additional fluoride at the time of brushing adds no extra benefit and for Corsodyl, the calcium in the toothpaste actually deactivates it – vastly reducing its effectiveness.

So, what does a good dental routine look like?

A combination of techniques is the best approach; research suggests that an electric toothbrush with a small round head allows for good clearance of plaque around the necks of the teeth and when used with a full-strength adult toothpaste, bathes the teeth in fluoride which is absorbed into the tooth structure (hydroxyapatite) forming an even stronger surface layer (fluor-hydroxyapatite) – as long as you don’t rinse after!

Technique is important – and small circular movements around the gum and biting surface of each tooth is the best way. This mechanical debridement carried out twice a day, in conjunction with the added chemical benefits of the fluoride, provide an effective basis to work from.

The evening clean is the most important for a few reasons; firstly, you’re not in as much of a rush and secondly your

Mouthwashes have their place but are poorly understood.

Flossing has had bad press recently, and in truth is rarely done well, but with new air and water flossers available the technique is becoming more accessible. Personally, I prefer the water flossers because they have the added benefit of being able to add a mouthwash into the solution which is then fired through the contacts between your teeth.

It’s Old Town is bigger than Montréal’s and visually more appealing but it is a little more touristy with close to 40 National Historic Sites of Canada (though you are also just 20 minutes away from an abundance of exquisite natural attractions which are particularly superb come summer). The culinary scene here for a city that’s a little on the smaller side is really quite remarkable.

Montréal on the other hand is big, vibrant, cosmopolitan and has many more places to explore, eat and shop. While the Old Town here isn’t as pretty as Québec’s, it’s actually more interesting if you like architecture, as every neighbourhood has its own personality and you can clearly see the French and British influences. The larger inner core of older neighbourhoods and great transit system make it easy to discover the city without the car and whether your passion is cuisine, contemporary art or vintage shopping, Montréal serves 68 wirrallife.com

it all up with aplomb. Ottawa is a great city to explore on foot ideal when you have the lengthy drive to Toronto ahead of you.

Two of the city’s absolute must do’s are Parliament Hill and the Rideau Canal. Acting as the anchor of Downtown Ottawa, the three neo-gothic structures of Parliament Hill are pretty hard to miss, with several areas open to the public, the most notable being the Centre Block. From here you can head upward to the observation deck of the Peace tower for a bird’s-eye view of the city or pay tribute to the Canadians lost during their military service in the Memorial Chamber.

Flooded with boats come summer (both private and commercial), the Rideau Canal is a series of rivers, lakes and connecting locks and canals that form a continuous waterway from Kingston to Ottawa and one of Canada’s newest UNESCO Heritage Sites with canal boat or canoe tours and hiking trails that highlight some of the area’s most beautiful sights.

Töronto is as cosmopolitan as they come. To newcomers, it may seem like just another big city; downtown is dotted with skyscrapers, the city’s streets are bustling with people on the go and the public transportation system is top-notch. But lift up the hood of Canada’s biggest city and you’ll find there’s more to the eye than an amazing skyline. Considered to be one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world (more than half the population are born outside of the city) Toronto is big... in more ways than one. It’s home to one of the tallest freestanding towers in the world - the CN Tower is the site of the world’s largest underground shopping mall, PATH and is also where you’ll find the longest street in the world: Yonge Street. But

aside from visiting its bigger attractions, Toronto should be experienced like any other big city: sipping cocktails in a corner restaurant, browsing the multicultural shops on quirky neighbourhood blocks and hopping on and off the subway for a night on the town.

While Niagara-on-the-Lake (or as we like to call it, The Loveliest Town in Canada) is situated in Ontario, just 20 minutes from the thunderous roar of the Falls themselves, it’s impossible not to feel light years away from its touristy neighbour up river from the moment you arrive. In fact, its absolutely magical and though it is used predominantly as a base to see Niagara Falls, you’ll find yourself in a town that makes you feel like you’ve stepped way back in time.

Take a stroll down Queen Street and you’ll think you’re in a Victorian-era film set, dotted with colourful storefronts, carved facades and hanging flower baskets. Drive 10 minutes to Queenston Village (the only time you’ll need your car all weekend), park up, grab a helmet and set of on a day-long bike tour along the scenic Niagara River. It’s a tour that includes stops at numerous historic sites and two wineries, with a wine sampling session and a three-course lunch at the Peller Estates Winery (though you’ll want to make sure you have a designated driver along for the ride).

BIRKENHEAD SCHOOL SPORTSMAN DINNER David Gower OBE, former captain of England was guest speaker at Birkenhead School's Annual Sportsman's Dinner on Friday 21st April. David spoke passionately to a sell-out dinner aimed at raising funds for the Senior Cricket Team who are touring Barbados this summer, the Girls Senior Lacrosse Team and a group of Sixth Form students who are trekking to Annapurna Base Camp, Nepal in the autumn.

David spoke about his sporting career and dropped in on the school's cricket team the following morning to share some valued hints and tips before that day's match. David is the latest in a number of high-profile speakers who have visited the school and Sir Tony Robinson, actor, comedian and author, will be visiting the school in June.

A police escort lead a convoy of 5 Supercars across the City Centre to The Royal Court where the 5 little Super Hero’s captured “The Evil Villain” to save the day. Cash for Kids Superhero day is Radio City on air campaign where the charity asks for support from listeners and local businesses to dress up as Super Hero’s’ and fund raise for the day, this year supporting When You Wish upon a Star a charity who grants wishes to local children with terminal or life limiting conditions. With everyone’s support CFK raised over £71,000!

Carole Clare charity manager said “We want to thank so many people for making the day happen I am always so humbled by people’s good will and actually sometimes all you have to do is ask the question. From Merseyside Police, Fire Brigade, the Super Car owners, Liverpool sightseeing tours to Merseytravel and The Royal Court we would not have been able to make this all happen the look on the kids faces was priceless. ‘THE SHEDS’ LAUNCH One of Wirral’s most innovative workspaces was officially opened when over 150 businesses attended the launch event of The Sheds at Pacific Road Business Hub on 27th April.

The Sheds offer a home away from home inside a spacious ‘garden shed’ environment, while businesses can make the most of open-plan desk space in a friendly, productive and vibrant co-working space.

Declaring The Sheds officially open, Paula Basnett, CEO of Wirral Chamber of Commerce said “We want to level the playing field for Wirral’s creative sector so they can have the benefits currently enjoyed at successful co-working spaces in other areas of the country. RED FOX BEER FESTIVAL The Red Fox held their first beer festival of the year with over 40 beers on handpull, plus a gin and prosecco bar. There was a great selection of beers on offer, ranging in strength and style Over 4500 pints were pulled over the weekend!

It was a great family day out with a bouncy castle, garden games and face painting. Dave Green, manager at the Red Fox said: “This was the biggest and best event we’ve had to date. We’re already looking forward to the next festival in September 2017.”

STEVE CALDWELL PAINTING FOR REAL

Award-winning Wirral artist, Steve Caldwell is known for his meticulously realistic portraits.

His sitters have included a design icon, a Wall Street financier, actors, dancers and underground musicians.

Following studies at Wirral Metropolitan College, he trained as a medical artist at Glyndwr University. This led to a career in book illustration, fine art and a current period specialising in realist portraiture.

Steve’s paintings have been widely exhibited and he has displayed work with The Royal Society of Portrait Painters, The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition and at The National Portrait Gallery’s BP Portrait Award Exhibition.

The Bebington-based artists tells Wirral Life about his work, influences and what it was like to collaborate with British design legend, Wayne Hemingway MBE. What led you to your current specialisation in portrait painting?

I thoroughly enjoyed working as an illustrator and having the opportunity to paint a wide variety of subjects such as books for children but painting people has always fascinated me most of all. Now that I specialise almost solely in portraiture, I can fully concentrate on scrutinizing anatomy and texture in great detail and hopefully produce artwork that has the realism of a photograph combined with the texture of a painting - a form of heightened reality.

Tell us about your recent portrait of designer Wayne Hemingway.

I’ve admired Wayne’s work since I was an art student. He is a multi-disciplinary designer with a social conscience and is sincere about producing design which improves 80 wirrallife.com

everyday life for people. Whether that is product design, interiors, branding or architecture. I was keen to paint a notable figure in the design industry as that is where my interests lie. Also, he is visually strong and I was delighted that his portrait was recently selected for display at this years Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition at The Mall Galleries in central London.

As an artist, who are your main influences?

I enjoy most styles of painting from hyper-realism to abstract expressionism but I am drawn to figurative painters such as Andrew Wyeth, Lucian Freud and Norman Rockwell. I admire the intensity of their work and the struggle to paint more than just a physical likeness. Contemporary painters such as Philip Harris and Lewis Chamberlain also inspire me to work harder and use painted detail and texture to describe in depth the personality and identity of my sitters.

How do you select your portrait sitters? What do you look for when painting a portrait?

I am fascinated by all kinds of people and I see lots of faces everyday that I would like to paint. Occasionally, I will approach a prospective sitter in the street, give them my card and ask if they would be kind enough to allow me to paint them. Thankfully, their reactions are generally very positive. Luckily, sitters also approach me with requests to have their portrait painted. I enjoy taking on portrait commissions and have been very lucky over the years to have received commissions from private collectors, advertising agencies and book publishers. I was recently asked to paint Wall Street financier, Larry Fink of BlackRock for Bloomberg Media in New York which was very interesting.

WIRRAL TIME TRAVEL

CLATTERBRIDGE WORKHOUSE State-provided poor relief in England dated from the end of Queen Elizabeth's reign in 1601, with the passing of an Act for the Relief of the Poor which made parishes legally responsible for looking after their poor inhabitants.

The Act provided for the levying of a poor-rate tax from local property owners. The 1601 Act made no mention of workhouses although it provided that materials should be bought to provide work for the unemployed able-bodied - with the threat of prison for those who refused. It also proposed the erection of housing for the "impotent poor" that included those who were elderly or chronically sick.

Parish poor relief was dispensed mostly through "out-relief " (grants of money, clothing, food, or fuel) to those who lived in their own homes. However, the workhouse gradually began to evolve in the 17th century as an alternative form of "indoor relief ", both to save the parish money, and to act deter able-bodied people who were required to work, usually without pay, in return for their board and lodging. The passing of the Workhouse Test Act in 1723, gave parishes the option of denying out-relief and offering claimants only the workhouse.

The Wirral Poor Law Union formally came into being on 16th May 1836. Its operation was overseen by an elected Board of Guardians, 57 in number,with a Chairman and representatives of its 56 constituent parishes. The population within the area covered by the Union at the 1831 Census had been 17,342 with parishes ranging in size from Nether Pool (population 19) to Birkenhead (2,569). The average annual poorrate expenditure for the period 1834-36 had been £3,674 or 4s.3d. per head of the population.

A new Wirral Union workhouse was erected in 18367 at Clatterbridge on the road from Birkenhead to Chester. It was designed by William Cole. In 1837,

the Poor Law Commissioners approved a budget of £2,500 for the construction of the building. The workhouse was to accommodate 130 inmates. The building was financed by a loan from a the Rev R M Feilden, the Vicar of St Andrew's, Bebington, at 4½ per cent interest. The fitting out of the establishment cost £64.8s.0d.

The original water supply to the building may have been from the nearby brook, but in 1839 an order was issued to sink a four-foot brick-ringed well to provide water. There were originally no baths in the workhouse, The workhouse was economically furnished. The new Board Room contained only an oil-cloth covered deal table, 12 feet long by four feet wide, and twelve strong rush-bottomed chairs. A number of double-beds were purchased for young inmates which later on were occupied by three children each. By 1899, a large infirmary block had been added at the north-east of the original workhouse, with a second block added to its rear by 1912.

The workhouse represented the underbelly of society, where anyone who was poor, homeless, unemployed or ill was sent to work and live. As part of a Royal Commission report into workhouses, the Assistant Commissioner Gilbert Henderson visited the Liverpool workhouse, which was in Brownlow Hill. What he saw there was the segregation of the sexes, a 12-hour working day, and almost constant confinement to the Workhouse. His report said: “The inmates of the workhouse were formerly allowed to go out every Thursday afternoon - this permission led to many irregularities, the paupers frequently returning drunk, and begging or otherwise misconducting themselves in the streets to the scandal of the establishment. They also used to go out on Sundays to church […] a regulation that was adopted in 1831, which restricted the liberty of leaving the house to the first Thursday afternoon in every month. The

Catholics go out to chapel at eight every Sunday morning, and return at ten. Thus, one condition of entering this workhouse is submission to constant confinement, except for a few hours every month.”

Whether the inmates of the Clatterbridge Workhouse were allowed out for the same purpose is not known.

One source of insight into life in the workhouse comes from the lists of rules under which workhouse operated. These were often printed and prominently displayed in the workhouse, and also read out aloud each week so that illiterate inmates could have no excuse for disobeying them.

Life inside the workhouse was intended to be as off-putting as possible. Men, women, children, the infirm, and the able-bodied were housed separately and given very basic and monotonous food such as watery porridge called gruel, or bread and cheese. All inmates had to wear the rough workhouse uniform and sleep in communal dormitories. Supervised baths were given once a week. The able-bodied were given hard work such as stone-breaking or picking apart old ropes called oakum. (tarred fibre used in shipbuilding for caulking or packing the joints of timbers in wooden vessels and the deck planking of iron and steel ships. Sometimes inmates – particularly children – were cruelly treated. It was uncommon but some people guilty of cruelty in the workhouses were brought to justice. One female member of staff in a different workhouse was sentenced to five years penal servitude for mistreating workhouse children. She had whipped them with stinging nettles, forced them to kneel on the wire netting that covered the hot-water pipes and deprived them of water for so long that they resorted to drinking from the toilet bowls.

The 1881 Census recorded that the staff of the Clatterbridge Workhouse were the Master, Theophilus Tuck, his wife Olivia the Matron, Louisa Frith the Schoolmistress, Pheobie Jeffries the Assistant Schoolmistress, Mary Anne Fallon the Nurse, and George and Elizabeth Errington, the Porter and Portress. There was a total of 108 residents, some of whom were described as scholars, labourers, fishermen, bakers, sailors, weavers, a tinker, a quarryman, a tinker, a charwoman, a coal miner and a coach trimmer.

After the ending of the workhouse system in 1930, the Wirral workhouse was renamed Clatterbridge (County) General Hospital and following the establishment of the National Health Service it became Clatterbridge Hospital. The original workhouse building was demolished after the Second World War. The rest of the old blocks were demolished in 1997.

The elderly and infirm sat around in the dayrooms or sick-wards with little opportunity for visitors. Parents were only allowed limited contact

Nothing beats the feeling of pulling back the curtains on a Sunday morning to reveal a stunning blue sky - perfect weather for another Cars and Coffee Liverpool meeting. It’s exciting, opening that squeaky garage door to reveal your pride and joy. But the adrenaline starts pumping big time as soon as you crank up the V8, shattering the peaceful surroundings.

Everyone rocked up before the 9.00am kick-off at Chung Ku restaurant. The beautiful sight of Frank Steel’s vintage Mercedes Benz pickup L 206 D truck, in a vibrant orange, drove in with ticking sound of its dainty diesel engine. One of the wonderful things about these meetings are the stories from gentlemen such as Frank about his motoring years. The truck was bought from brand new in the 1970’s for his flagging business on the Wirral, used and battered through the years as a workhorse, has now become a museum piece after being fully restored down to the last nut and bolt 20 years ago. You could say the truck has come full circle, after not only being a tool of the trade, but its become a classic piece of desirable history.

The next generation should take note - if your vehicles are looked after - they should last forever.

The meeting was yet another full house - reaching 400 vehicles. Thanks to Dave Simmon’s Liverpool Scooter Club, the Scotch Piper members for introducing a lot of friends and family to the event. A new member to the meeting was a surprise for the big kids amongst us, especially the ones who were born around the 80’s.

Fans of the television series Knight Rider were thrilled by the arrival of the legendary car Kitt. Knight Rider featured David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a hi-tech crime-fighter assisted by KITT (standing for Knight Industries Two Thousand), an artificially intelligent, self-aware and seemingly indestructible heavily modified 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am. Featuring a futuristic dashboard with hundreds of blinking lights (see left) to denote massive computer power with a two handle steering wheel.

Well, KITT did amaze us and entertained the crowd, it could really talk!!!

The voice totally puzzled the young kids. This month the variety of cars was very diverse, with the weather coaxing all those rareties out of hibernation. The usual fanatical supercars and the classics were shimmering away in their element on the bank holiday. The Riley’s and Austin Mini appeared head to head with Tony Meredith’s newly owned Corvette Stingray and the beautifully pair of original Jaguar E-Types in fixed head and roadster V12.

The charity for this meeting was the Liverpool Lord Mayor’s chosen charities.

Thanks to the Lee family and especially David Gidman from HR Owen who made yet another appearance with a rare Lamborghini Aventador S in a striking blood red, one of only seven in this country - very pleasing for the local bloggers, vloggers and tweeters. Within a short time they raised £251.55 but we sadly missed Roz Gladden (Liverpool Lord Mayor) herself as she had a last minute rush to hospital.

We send our best wishes and hope she is back on her feet soon.

Cars and Coffee Liverpool recently helped organise an event for the Cash For Kids ‘Superheroes’ Charity. Five Supercars were chosen to pick up five children dressed as superheroes. The lineup was Richard Birchwood in a McLaren, Sean Dorgan in a Ferrari 488 Spider, David Gidman in the Lamborghini Aventador S, Chris Jones from Liverpool Williams BMW in the i8 and myself in a Porsche 991 Turbo S (thanks to Chris at OCD Porsche Specialist for prepping the car and to Rob McPartland). The joy and happiness it brought to the children definitely made this fundraiser worth while. Well done to Carole Clare and thank you to Merseyside Police - especially the motorbike patrol unit for a tremendous job holding back all the traffic for us to drive around the city.

LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR S

Lamborghini’s flagship model the much loved fire breathing Aventador was launched in 2012 to replace the Murcialago. It’s supercar looks on point with styling cues taken from the stealth bomber has made it the supercar to be seen in for the last 6 years. In true Lamborghini V12 style it has been the car that every boy wants a poster of on his bedroom wall.

We have just seen the SV version. The lightweight, track focused Aventador which was sold out before it was even officially launched with a limited run of 600 Coupes and 500 Roadster.

So, what is going to happen with the Aventador? The Replacement is not due till 2021 so the guy’s from Sant’Agata Bolognese have given the Aventador a facelift. And what a facelift it is. The looks are still on point and I feel don’t make the original version look dated. Aventador S now has 4-wheel steering, improved downforce and a new EGO model which allows you set the engine, transmission and steering individually.

They have also changed the exhaust so it is now much louder. Even at 20mph it sounds like you are doing 100mph in true Lamborghini style.

The Aventador’s DNA has stayed the same though, Still powered by the normally aspirated 6.5ltr V12 but power has been dialled up to 740BHP and this is still fed through the quirky seven-speed automated manual transmission which can easily give unaware passengers whiplash when in Corsa ( Italian for ‘race’) mode.

All this put together on the road has made the Aventador S a much more dynamic car to drive almost verging on playful. This is mostly due to the 4-wheel steering which at low speeds will move the rear wheels by 3 degrees giving the impression the Aventador is 500mm shorter which makes it a much more agile car. At high speeds the rear wheels turn the same way as the fronts which gives the impression the car is 700mm longer. I have been one of the lucky few who has experienced the drive of the new Aventador S and the difference is truly unbelievable. Lamborghini really are riding on the crest of wave at the moment and showing the other manufacturers the way and seem to be having real fun at the same time.

JAGUAR F -TYPE 3.0 LITRE V6

I have always said that Jaguar has been absent for far too long from the two seated sports car market. The last time was in the form of the E-Type, and the last one of those ever made was way back in 1975. So, it was about time that Jaguar once again proved that it can make another proper two seated sports car.

Well I am happy to say, that it has done just that, in the form of the F-Type.

The Jaguar F-Type is a two-seat sports car with staggering head turning looks that oozes desirability. The F-Type looks every bit as exciting as I would expect a sports car to look in a modern world - and it easily has one of the most beautifully detailed body lines that I have ever seen. You can forget your retro Fiat Spiders and your sleek Ferrari’s, the F-Type makes them all look like the ugly ducklings, as it roams around being the beautiful swan.

I have to admit, that I was a little worried at first, that Jaguar was trying to follow up from one of it’s most famous sports cars of all time - the E-Type, a difficult act to follow even for Jaguar, however they have managed to do this with such brilliance, that it even puts Aston Martin to shame.

The F-Type I was testing was equipped with a modern, lightweight soft top that, when lowered, serves as its own tonneau cover. This not only provides considerable weight savings - but also contributes to the car’s low centre of gravity. The top can also be fully raised or lowered in seconds at speeds of up to 30 mph.I also like the hidden, automatically deploying door handles that remain flush with the door panel until activated by unlocking the car with the key fob. The F-Type has full LED rear lamps that give it its own unique signature by reinterpreting classic E-Type cues from the past - and moving it right into the future. By just looking at the back of this car, you will instantly know it’s the F-Type. I also like the twin centre exhaust outlet fitted to the V6 models. This is also a classic nod to the Jaguar E-Type introduced in 1961. The front lighting also features new LED headlights and LED ‘J’ blade Daytime Running Lights which are as powerful as they look. These headlights reach further into the darkness than previous generation units, producing a highly focused beam of light with a quality closer to daylight, helping your eyes distinguish objects more easily.

On the Road: A joy to drive is what it is. The steering is taut and accurate,

and it makes you feel like you are in control, whatever situation unfolds. The chassis is excellent and it’s very impressive in the twisty corner stuff, while its grip levels are so high, its borderline skateboard. The F-Type is also poised, agile and a very engaging drive no matter what your skill level is.

Also, to optimise the F-Type’s handling and agility, a whole range of driving technologies are available. These include Torque Vectoring, Adaptive Dynamics and an Electronic Active Differential. Each one works to enhance the driving experience through increased control, traction and feel.

Power and Efficiency: The 340PS supercharged V6 produces 450Nm of

torque and can accelerate from zero-to-60 mph in around 5.5 seconds and will reach an electronically limited maximum speed of 161 mph. Every F-Type is also fitted with an Active Sports Exhaust that creates a race-car inspired crescendo. The exhaust system reacts to throttle position, speed and engine revs by opening active valves. When open, these valves allow exhaust gases to take a more direct, less restrictive route through the rear silencer producing a much richer, more exhilarating sound. The Switchable Active Exhaust* allows you to manually open the exhaust valves so you can enjoy F-Type’s stirring soundtrack at all engine speeds.

Safety and Technology : The F-Type’s cabin layout is just like all Jaguars’ perfect! Jaguar has always focused on the driver, and what they have done on the inside of the F-Type is nothing short of epic. For instance, a grab handle that glides down the center console on the passenger side - delineating it from the driver’s position and wrapping around the center console is such a brilliant bit of interior design. The seats inside the F-Type feature power recline and height adjustment and performance seats can be ordered with additional side bolstering for greater support during high-force cornering. You also get an array of kit which includes; 18” alloy wheels, Passive suspension, Open Differential with Torque Vectoring Dynamic Mode, Active Sports Exhaust, 355mm front and 325mm rear brakes with Silver brake callipers, Xenon headlights with LED signature, Daytime Running Lights, LED tail lights, Infrared reflective windscreen, Deployable boot lid spoiler, Sport seats with leather and suede cloth facings, 6-way electric front seats, Leather steering wheel with Silver, gearshift paddles (automatic only), Knurled Aluminium centre console, 8” Touchscreen and Meridian™ Sound System including Navigation Pro System. There is also a whole host of advanced technology designed to keep you safe and take the stress out of driving. These systems can help with everything from reducing the chance of a motorway collision to avoiding minor bumps in a car park.
