T

he spring edition is always one of my favourite ones to put together every year. As a keen (although by no means expert) gardener I love a rummage around local garden centres and nurseries - you never know when you might discover another stunning new plant you can find room for! If you are anything like me you’ll love our spring gardening special - it has 17 pages of great information on local garden centres and gardening services (p35) as well as a list of jobs to be getting on with this month (p50) - so long as the recent stormy weather subsides of course! Away from gardens there is plenty more to look forward to. We have some exciting local events and exhibitions coming up (see our listings and news pages for the details on some of the highlights) and with Easter on the way The Food Wife presents some yummy pancake recipes to try at home (p29). As well as all that we have great ideas on some local Mother’s Day gifts (p24) and lots more besides. Enjoy.

A RARE FIND FROM THE MANTLEPIECE Next time you decide to have a clear out, you would be wise to keep Lady Sally Peel’s story in the back of your mind. Words by CHLOE FOX.

T

he year was 2018 and, in the aftermath of her husband’s death, Lady Peel decided to downsize from the large country house they had shared to a smaller townhouse of her own, overlooking Salisbury Cathedral. Right up until his death in 2005, at the age of 101, her husband Sir John Peel was a remarkable man. The most eminent obstetrician of his generation, he served as Surgeon-Gynaecologist to Queen Elizabeth II from 1961-1973. "He lived an extraordinary life," says Lady Peel, who became Sir John’s third wife in 1995. "And lots of it was lived without me." For as long as she had known him, two small enamelled porcelain Chinese cups had sat on the mantelpiece of their home. "I never knew where they had come from - a grateful patient, most probably", Lady Peel recalls. "I just dusted them occasionally and thought what a shame it was that one of them had a chip." When the house sold quickly, Lady Peel ended up with a small window of time in which to pack up, and almost threw the two little cups away due to the chip. When James Harvey - whom she had hired on the recommendation of a friend to help her sell some of the contents of the house - saw them, he was quick to spot their potential value.

The two Chinese Cups sold for more than £11,000

"In a nail-biting flurry of final activity, bids on the February Auction Hub auction came in from all around the world" Yongzheng, the cups were made as an aesthetic homage to pieces originally produced during the reign of Chengua, the ninth Emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1464-87). What is particularly remarkable about these extraordinarily delicate, hand painted pieces - whose most likely purpose would have been as ceremonial wine cups - is the reign mark on their underside, a six-figure mark in Chinese script which bears accurate testimony to their date and origin."

In a nail-biting flurry of final activity, bids on the February Auction Hub sale came in from all around the world - UK, China, Spain, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Canada - and the cups nearly tripled their estimate to reach a final hammer price of "I knew as soon as I saw them that they were very rare pieces of Doucai £11,640 (including fees). "I was porcelain." says senior valuer Matthew absolutely delighted with the result" Lacey at The Auction Hub. "Produced says Matthew. "Not least because it illustrates exactly why the Auction during the reign of Emperor

Hub was set up - giving clients a boutique service that combines all the bespoke experience of traditional auctioneers with the power and global reach of the internet." "I do so wish he had known," says a delighted Lady Peel of the unknown treasures on her late husband’s mantelpiece. "And I’m very glad I didn’t throw them away!" If you have pieces in your home you'd like to find out more about you can pop along to one of The Auction Hub's free valuation days (Urchfont Village Hall on 8 March, Seend Community Centre on 22 March & Bratton Jubilee Hall on 6 April, all from 11am to 2pm). NEW CURRICULUM AT ST MARGARET'S PREP

It's been a busy first half of the year at ST MARGARET'S PREP in Calne...

T

he new academic year kicked off with the launch of a newly revised curriculum at St Margaret’s Prep. In Pre-Prep, the Autumn term began with the launch of the new 2+ Bluebird Nursery and the grand opening of their newly renovated Early Years Courtyard. Nursery and Reception children have been embracing this new outdoor learning space and have been enjoying the many outdoor learning opportunities it provides. In Year 1, the Autumn Term saw the launch of two new topics – ‘Marvellous Me’ and ‘Park Life’. The children enjoyed engaging Hook Days complemented by trips and visits to immerse them in their learning and their new thematic approach. Year 2 children enjoyed learning all about the Great Fire of London through their ‘London’s Burning’ topic which culminated in a real-life re-enactment of the great fire itself. Following this, they then launched their newly revised Science topic, ‘Amazing Animals’, which even included a visit from various creepy crawlies to bring their learning to life! In the Prep department, curriculum changes mean that the children are now taught wider curriculum subject areas (History, Geography and Science), in blocked units in order to really investigate subject areas in depth and to support knowledge retention. Year 3 enjoyed fascinating units studying the Stone Age, Rocks and Soils and Earthquakes, which included a fun-filled Stone Age Day,

creating pneumatic models in DT and a trip to Avebury. Year 4 children threw themselves into their studies surrounding the Anglo Saxons and the Digestive System. This linked nicely with the DT curriculum which saw the children expand their cookery skills culminating in the design and production of delicious soup recipes. Up in Year 5, pupils explored the topics of Climate Change, Keeping Healthy and The Tudors. A fabulous Tudor day saw some incredible costumes and even a re-enactment of the battle of Bosworth! Despite working hard towards their Senior School entrance exams and interviews, Year 6 pupils

managed to still demonstrate their commitment to their studies by exploring the themes of Fair Trade, Electricity and World War 2 in their wider curriculum. The easing of Covid restrictions meant that they were able to throw themselves in to their Science work by visiting the St Mary’s Calne Science Labs whilst World War 2 Day saw another amazing array of costumes and activities planned to bring their learning to life! If you'd like to see more about the school, St Margaret's is hosting an Open Morning on 17 March. Head to the website for details. • stmargaretsprep.org.uk

Keeping you in the know as to what is coming into season each month is NEIL MORTIMER from Lovejoys Wholesale...

J

anuary and February are out of the way and the weather has been kind so far this year. Hopefully this will last through to the spring, but no doubt we will see some rain and frost even if we do not see snow. Let’s hope for good spring weather to get all of the early crops planted. In saying that, our potato grower told me that one of his highest yields were from a very late planting. I suppose it is all about timing and the right soil conditions.

Last month we looked forward to the forced rhubarb season, this month we are looking forward to the start of the asparagus season. It is one of the few UK crops to be strictly seasonal. Traditionally the UK season runs from St George’s

Most vegetable seeds won’t germinate below a soil temperature of 7°C so it is pointless getting in a hurry until the soil has reached this temperature. If you are the impatient type one way to speed this up is to warm the soil by putting cloches, clear plastic sheeting or even bottomless plastic bottles over the soil a few weeks before sowing or planting. Keep the protection in place for a few weeks or until the weather warms up. Otherwise the sudden shock of lower temperatures can seriously affect their growth.

Day on 23 April right through to the summer solstice on 21 June. With climate change though the crop is being harvested a little earlier, sometimes even in late March. The season ends sharply though so that it does not starve the plants of energy so they have a good crop the following year. Thank goodness we have the lovely asparagus to look forward to, plus the emergence of wild garlic which always excites our chefs!

FLIPPIN' GOOD

recipes

This month FRAN STEVENS, aka The Food Wife, has some great pancake recipes to try for Shrove Tuesday and beyond!

BREAKFAST PANCAKES WITH BERRIES & YOGURT Makes 8 pancakes

An indulgent breakfast is sometimes called for and Americanstyle thick fluffy pancakes ticks the box. I love these with crispy streaky bacon and lashings of maple syrup but if I pretend I’m being healthier, then topping them with berries and yogurt is my go-to. This mix makes roughly eight pancakes, and so could serve eight or four… but sometimes, you just need to stack them high! So it can feed just two (greedy) people.

Using a large frying pan (preferably non-stick) heat a little butter or oil over a medium heat. When the pan is hot, pour the batter from a jug or ladle into rounds roughly 10cm wide. Cook the pancakes on their first side for about 1-2 mins (you’ll see little bubbles popping on the surface). Use a spatula to turn the pancakes over and cook for a further minute on the other side. Once cooked, remove and keep warm whilst you

prepare your berry compote. Place your frozen (or fresh!) berries in a pan and put on a medium heat. Add sugar to taste (1tbsp per 100g makes for a sweet compote, adjust accordingly). Stir every so often until the berries have defrosted and given out their sweet juice, and the sugar dissolved. Stack your pancakes on a plate and top with the berry compote and a generous dollop of Greek yogurt.

Ingredients For the pancakes 200g self-raising flour 1½ tsp baking powder 1 tbsp caster sugar Salt 3 eggs 25g butter (melted) 200ml milk Melted butter or oil for cooking For the compote 300g frozen mixed berries Caster sugar Greek yogurt to serve

Method Mix together the flour, baking powder, caster sugar and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Create a well in the centre and add the eggs, 25g melted butter and milk. Whisk together to make a smooth batter. THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE 29

recipes Ingredients 165g plain flour (gf if required) 3 eggs 400ml milk Pinch of salt Method Sift the flour into a large bowl, make a well in the centre and add the salt and eggs. Beat with a whisk, gradually adding the milk, until you have a smooth batter. Leave to rest for half an hour, but give it all a good whisk again before cooking.

Makes15 approx When it comes to Shrove Tuesday, crepe style pancakes are the only way to go for me. As one of four children, we would eagerly await whilst our mother would churn out pancake after pancake for us, and I could invariably fill and eat mine quicker than the wait for every fourth pancake. Nowadays, I tend to make a batch, keep them warm in a low oven and then serve them all at once, fillings on the table for everyone to help themselves. As for the fillings, our favourite savoury combination is blue cheese (Alex James’ Blue Monday being our go-to), sliced pear, pine nuts, rocket and a drizzle of sticky balsamic vinegar. Ham and cheese is also an obvious winner. Or for a more labour-intensive option, whole baby leeks, gently cooked until soft, wrapped in a slice of ham, rolled up in a crepe, and covered in a cheese sauce, then baked in an oven until golden. Mmmmmmm. If we’re going for sweet fillings I rarely stray from the classic lemon and sugar. And why only eat these on one day of the year? I’m all for having them on a regular basis. 30 THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

Pour from a jug, or ladle a very thin layer of the batter, swirling it around the pan to make an even layer. As the pancake cooks, it will start to come away from the sides of the pan; a good indication it’s ready to turn. This should take about 30 seconds. Flip the pancake and cook for another 30 or so seconds. Turn out and begin the process again; oil, pour, cook, flip, cook.

Ingredients 1 large banana, mashed 60g oats 60g self-raising flour ½ tsp baking powder Large pinch of ground cinnamon 1 egg, beaten Splash of full fat milk (about 50ml) Method Mix all the ingredients together until you have a well-combined batter. Heat a non-stick frying or crepe pan on a medium-high heat and add a little butter or oil (I used a spray oil). Spoon 2 tbsp of mixture into the pan (I could cook three at once) and cook for a couple of minutes until little bubbles appear and they are golden brown on the underside and firm enough to flip over, then cook for a further couple of minutes on the other side. Of course these aren’t just for babies! Try them with chopped fresh fruit and maple syrup or Greek yogurt for a delicious breakfast. • thefoodwife.co.uk

n.b. I found I needed a little more of the gf flour to get the right consistency. Otherwise the recipe is the same. When cooking they came out slightly thicker so it made fewer crèpes, but they tasted just as good.

BANANA & OAT PANCAKES Makes 7-8 These are a huge hit with my little ones and so quick to make. I served them

` CREPES

Place a non-stick frying pan over a high heat. You want the pan to get really hot (you can then turn it down to a medium high heat) and then grease it; I think the best results come from quickly (and very carefully) wiping some vegetable oil around the pan using a piece of folded up kitchen paper (ensuring the greased paper is kept well away from the heat source!)

either as a pudding with a dip of full fat Greek yogurt, with a spoonful of fruit compote or jam swirled through it or for breakfast with a smear of peanut butter on top; both go down well - just see the picture!

GARDEN JOBS

Here are some of the top jobs to be getting on with in the garden this month... 1. Prune bush and climbing roses Late winter (February or March) is often a good time for pruning roses. Head to the RHS website for tips on rose pruning.

You can start mowing your lawn if the weather is mild

2. Plant shallots, onion sets and early potatoes Onions are such a versatile vegetable – they feature in so many recipes, and growing your own means you’ll always have them to hand. 3. Plant summer-flowering bulbs Bulbs make a fine display planted in containers or borders, especially daffodils, snowdrops and tulips in spring. They are one of the easiest and most rewarding garden plants to grow. 4. Lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials Dividing perennials regularly will ensure healthy, vigorous plants that will continue to perform year after year. It also offers the opportunity to multiply your plants for free! 5. Top dress containers with fresh compost Topdress by removing 5cm (2in) old compost from the top

“Dividing perennials regularly will ensure healthy, vigorous plants” of the pot and replacing with fresh compost. 6. Mow the lawn on dry days (if needed) If it's the first cut of the year keep the blades high to avoid damaging new shoots. The grass will still look much tidier. 7. Cut back Cornus (dogwood) and Salix (willow) grown for

colourful winter stems Cut back to 60-90cm (2-3ft) from the ground for pollards or 5-7.5cm (2-3in) for coppiced (sometimes called stooled) specimens. See the RHS website for more detailed advice. 8. Hoe and mulch weeds to keep them under control early Run a hoe over a bed or between rows to kill most seedlings. For maximum effectiveness, choose a dry day with a light wind, so seedlings will dry out on the surface of the bed rather than re-rooting into moist soil. 9. Maintaining your pond Start feeding fish and using the pond fountain; remove pond heaters. Leave wildlife ponds as undisturbed as possible - wildlife ponds are better attended to in late autumn. 10. Protect new spring shoots from slugs. Cover/protect new shoots in the garden where you can't grow plants in a slug free environmennt like a cold frame/greenhouse. Also try o encourage slug predators like hedgehogs, birds, frogs, toads and beetles into your garden.

GETTING A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP

March is National Bed Month and local independent bed shop ELITE BEDS AND MATTRESSES have 6 tips for getting a good night’s sleep.

A

chieving a good night’s sleep is a problem for an awful lot of people, so to mark National Bed Month this March here are our top six ways to help you drift off into the land of nod.

1

Invest in your sleep with a comfortable, supportive bed. Yes, it might be National Bed Month, and yes, the focus is on beds, but what you sleep on plays a huge part in how well you doze. A bed with the correct support, comfort and space will ensure you wake less, move about less, aren’t disturbed by your partner as much and are less likely to wake up feeling tired or aching. Remember, if you’re not comfortable in bed your sleep won’t be as deep.

"what you sleep on plays a huge part in how well you doze."

2

Avoid clock watching. Instead of staring at the clock and stressing over how many lost hours of sleep you’ve had, hide the bedside clock or cover it with something. Checking the time only increases stress.

3

Don’t focus on how much sleep you’re getting. There’s no ideal quota and one size doesn’t fit all! Instead look at how you feel the next day. Too many people focus on sleep quantity, but what’s important is that the sleep you do

52

THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

If you aren't comfortable in bed your sleep won't be as deep

get is of good quality so make sure you regularly assess that and your comfort levels.

4

Write a to-do list before bed. Worry and anxiety often keeps us awake at night. We get into bed with our mind buzzing with things that are troubling us or what we need to get done. Keep a notepad and pen by your bed and write down worries or jobs that need to be tackled. It really does help to clear the mind for sleep.

5

Watch your diet. Don't overeat before bedtime. Choose foods with sleep promoting chemicals like chicken and turkey, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, peanuts, beans and milk. Equally, limit stimulants such as alcohol and caffeine which reduce sleep quality and prevents you feeling rested.

6

Establish a bedtime routine. Our bodies thrive on routine so establish and prioritise a bedtime routine and, where possible, stick to it. This could be something as simple as putting PJ’s on, washing your face and brushing your teeth. A bedtime routine signals the brain that it’s time for sleep. Like proper nutrition and exercise, sleep fulfils a vital role in keeping us healthy and happy. We need a good night’s sleep to ensure we’re feeling fit, thinking sharply and generally to give us the appetite and enthusiasm to make the most of everyday living. DIVORCE LAW IS CHANGING

J

eremy Tier, a Partner in Wansbroughs’ Family team, explains more about the new no-fault divorce law coming in on 6 April 2022. As things stand, any individual wishing to petition for divorce must be prepared to attribute blame for the breakdown of their marriage unless they have been separated for two years or more. For many couples this is not appropriate and it will often act as a source of great animosity. The Government has finally agreed to introduce a no-fault divorce petition on 6 April 2022. The key features are: • The existing 5 ‘facts’ are being replaced with a singular

requirement to provide a statement of irretrievable breakdown within the relationship • The divorce can no longer be contested by the Respondent • A joint application can be brought by both parties • A minimum waiting time of 20 weeks between submission of the petition and the proceedings has been introduced, to prevent applications made in haste

something which helps us stand out from the local competition. To find out more please email family@wansbroughs.com or call 01380 733300. • wansbroughs.com Jeremy Tier

Our team of Family Law experts are happy to offer individuals considering a no-fault divorce petition a complimentary 30-minute consultation. We will always take the time to listen and understand your goals. We offer a highly personalised service and have a long-standing reputation for delivering results,

T

he club recently pledged its commitment to the female game alongside setting out a strategic roadmap that culminates in an application to compete in the Allianz Premier 15s from 2023-24.

Bath is seeking to identify and develop talented young athletes

The side also provides a clear pathway to joining Bath Rugby Women’s professional playing squad as it evolves over the next 18-months. Bath Rugby Women’s Sevens, combined with the University of Bath Women’s Team and Championship South 1 side, Bath Rugby Ladies, sees an elite playing pathway starting to form. A newly launched Women’s Elite Rugby Academy in partnership with Bath College adds further strength offering 16–19-year-old female players an opportunity to unlock their full potential on the pitch without needing to compromise on their education. Bath Rugby Women and Girls’ Development Lead, Maria Crowfoot, 68 THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

commented: “It’s a privilege to form a women’s sevens team. While continued investment in the community game, working with grassroots clubs and schools remains paramount, offering elite playing opportunities to talented female players in our region is the first step towards building our professional squad.

WELSH BLUES & NOSTALGIA

The Welsh for blue is glas, as in the expression yng nglas y dydd, in the blue of the day (the early morning). But glas is a hardworking word. It’s also used in the expression gorau glas (‘blue best’), to mean to do one’s best, and, changing tack rather dramatically, it appears as glas wen (‘blue smile’), a smile that is insincere and mocking. In Welsh literature, glas is a colour that is somewhere between green, blue and grey; it also has poetic meanings of both youth and death.

Welsh also has hiraeth meaning a mingled feeling of sadness, somewhere between homesickness and nostalgia. Aspects of it can be found in Weltshmerz, one of those untranslatable German words that broadly means world-weariness but carries with it both a sense of sorrow at the evils of the world and a yearning for something better. Similarly there’s saudade the Portuguese for the longing for things that were or might have been. Nostalgia likewise lies at the heart of the Brazilian Portuguese word banzo, which describes a slave’s profound longing for his African homeland.

3) Lear/Leer a) an urchin b) empty, hungry c) to be enraged or maddened

b) a lean deer not fit to hunt c) a small cavity in a rock

I

ALL THE SMALL THINGS

’m writing this a few days after Valentine’s Day which traditionally, amongst other things, demands the exchange of cards. I always try to outdo my wife and ‘win’ at cards but this year I came second by quite a stretch! My card wasn’t dreadful, it referenced the ongoing ‘debate’ we have about the heating in the house, when it should come on, how warm/cool it should be etc etc and was pretty funny if I say so myself... just not funny enough to win. I am in the camp of the house always being too cold and resent having to layer up, inside my own house, to watch the latest Only Connect or University Challenge. This got me thinking though about the small, continuous little niggles that every relationship

long as everything gets cleaned is surely the point? Actually it matters quite a lot, if it isn’t stacked in the correct way things get missed and they have to go through again so throwing as much in as possible is a false economy. Yes, you’ve guessed correctly, the dishwasher is a definite bone of contention in the Rockliffe household. I’m with Jon Richardson on this one, check out his standup routine on YouTube about the subject if you can, it’s very funny and also has the kudos of being correct. I was having a chat with one of my wife’s friends the other day and they mentioned something that really gets their goat about their partner. Now I wouldn’t like to be pinned down as to whether or not

“Why should it matter how a dishwasher is stacked? As long as everything gets cleaned is surely the point? Actually it matters quite a lot” this happens in our house (given that my wife reads this column I have to be careful) so I’ll leave you to draw your own conclusions. My wife’s friend was bemoaning that when her husband uses something from a cupboard, in the kitchen say, he doesn’t put it back when he’s finished with it. Instead he leaves While researching this piece... yes said item on the counter right contrary to popular belief I do a small amount of background to each under/over the actual cupboard in which it dwells, assuming, I guess, one of these... I read that the most that someone else (his wife) will common niggle between couples come along after him and put it is how the dishwasher is stacked. away. I can immediately see how Really??? Why should it matter frustrating that might be. I’m just how a dishwasher is stacked? As has and if they happened all at once would probably mean the end of most of them but luckily they only happen one at a time, even if that is ten times a day!! And, thankfully, husbands and wives also come with redeeming features!

really pleased it doesn’t happen in our house!! (Ed’s note, he’s got me there!) In the interest of fairness it must be mentioned that my wife and the aforementioned husband have no right of reply here and one imagines they might have their own spousal niggles they’d like to air. But they don’t have their own column and I do so... unlucky! It’s good that as adults we have learned to compromise otherwise every day would be a nightmare. Can you imagine getting properly up in the air about all those small things your significant other does that annoy you. There actually is a (sursprisingly insightful) blog post out there called ‘My Wife Divorced me Over Dishes’. The divorce rate in England and Wales is 33.3% as it is, my guess would be that if we let all those things get to us it would be somewhere near 90%!!! Phil Rockliffe
