ometimes words fail you. That’s how I feel when it comes to writing my welcome to you all this month! The world has taken a strange and scary turn in recent days and we must all batten down the hatches and hope we can emerge from it in a few months’ time. Whilst we wait for the worst of it to blow over please enjoy the escapism that the latest edition of The West Wilts Magazine can provide. From destination pubs to Easter activities (that we hope the family will be able to enjoy) we’ve put together another edition that celebrates the best of our little patch and hope that whenever you can, and if you are able, you will be supporting your local businesses. The days and weeks ahead look rocky for us all, but none more so than for small independent businesses. Use them and encourage others to do the same. The British high street will only be poorer without them. As you will appreciate, some events will have to be postponed, cancelled or altered. Please call or go online to see if events are still going ahead.

GREAT CHALFIELD MANOR PLANT FAIR SUNDAY 3 MAY The plant fair at Great Chalfield Manor on Sunday 3 May is a great opportunity to see one of the most beautiful medieval manor houses in England. Set in the tranquil Wiltshire countryside and with seven acres of gardens, this ancient house has survived the five centuries since its building and appears much as it did in the 1470’s, when it was commissioned for the Wiltshire landowner Thomas Tropenell. 8
Not usually open to the public, this is a rare chance to see the gardens. The plant fair attracts specialist nurseries with a huge range of plants for your garden. There are teas, coffees, cakes and delicious fish and chips, making for a fabulous day out. All proceeds are spilt between the Friends of Great Chalfield and Jamie’s Farm - a local charity benefitting disadvantaged young people. • jamiesfarm.org.uk

Bradford on Avon Bowls Club, whose home is in Culver Close, opens its doors on Sunday 19 April for the new season. This year promises to continue the big improvement in the performance of the green following a change in the management regime. Previously the playing surface was treated in the traditional way which allowed a thick layer of thatch to accumulate under the surface resulting in a heavy, slow performance. A group of members have implemented an organic method that uses only natural ingredients to remove the thatch and promote a faster playing surface. Last season saw a huge difference and it’s hoped that following another course of treatment over the winter the transformation will continue. This year’s Open Day is on Monday 25 May from 11am-4pm, when anyone is welcome to come along and have a go. As well as helping with staying fit and active, bowls has a social side and events are arranged at the club during the season. Situated beneath the dramatic escarpment of Salisbury Plain and mentioned in the Doomsday Book, Edington takes its name from the Battle of Ethandun when King Alfred defeated the Great Heathen Army, led by Guthrum, in 878AD. The famous Westbury White Horse chalk hill figure, a three-mile walk from the pub, was (it is popularly thought) carved into the chalk downs to commemorate this great victory. The village also lies on the Ridgeway trail, and there are many footpaths

With Easter on the way, why not try this delicious recipe for hot cross buns from FRAN STEVENS, aka The Food Wife. I made my first sourdough starter back in December, using it to make regular loaves and pizza dough without any need for yeast. As a seasonal treat I decided to use it as the base of my hot cross buns. I’ve opted for a no-knead method. Essentially a 24 hour process with very little human input and no need for any machinery to produce the dough. I’ve gone for a dairy-free bun, due to dietary requirements, but these can be made with butter if no such requirements are needed. They can also be made in advance and frozen; simply defrost for a few hours before re-heating or splitting and toasting. Ingredients 330g recently fed sourdough starter (fed 2-3 hours before using) 80ml/g vegetable oil (or melted butter if you’re not making these vegan/dairy-free) 300ml luke-warm water 10g salt 50g caster sugar 250g strong white bread flour 250g strong wholemeal bread flour 30g mixed spice 200g dried fruit (I used 150g sultanas and 50g of candied peel) For the crosses: 50g plain flour Water For the glaze: 25g caster sugar 25ml water
Method Begin by placing the bubbling starter in a large bowl, add the oil, water, salt, sugar, mixed spice and flours and use a wooden spoon to mix into a
DAIRY-FREE, VEGAN, NO-KNEAD SOURDOUGH HOT CROSS BUNS
combined dough. This will not take long and will be a rather wet mix. Cover with a damp tea towel and leave for an hour. Uncover the dough and start folding the sides into the middle. Add the dried fruit as you go. Keep rotating the bowl, moving the outside in until you have done about 20 folds. Re-cover and leave, revisiting three more times over the next few hours to turn and fold a few times each visit. Each time the dough should have risen slightly and become smoother.
Line a baking sheet with parchment and roughly shape each piece into a ball and place on the baking sheet. Mix the paste for the crosses by combining the flour with a little water until a smooth paste is formed. Place in a piping bag and pipe crosses across each bun (each row can be piped as a continuous line).
Cover and leave in a cool place to prove overnight.
Bake in a preheated oven (190°C fan) for 25 minutes, or until browned, risen and have a hollow sound when tapped underneath. Make the glaze whilst they are baking by heating the water and sugar to a bubbling syrup in a saucepan.
The next morning you should have a smooth, well risen dough. Tip out onto a lightly floured surface and divide into 12 pieces (I cut in half, divided each half in two and then each quarter into three).
Brush each bun with the glaze and allow to cool. These are best eaten warm. Either eat fresh from the oven, re-heat in the oven or split and toast. They can be frozen too; just defrost a few hours before needed. THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE 25

OVERLAY WORKTOPS & REPLACEMENT DOORS The greener, more environmentally friendly way to update your kitchen.
A Quartz worktop overlay is a stunning and cost effective way of transforming your kitchen
f you’re thinking of a new kitchen but are concerned about the cost, mess and impact on the environment then how about a kitchen makeover? Kitchen makeovers have become
increasingly popular as a more economical and environmentally friendly way of updating your kitchen – and much less hassle than a brand new kitchen too! By simply replacing your doors and overlaying your worktops, you can get the look of a brand new kitchen but for less money, hassle and impact on the environment. Instead of your old worktops going into landfill Dream Doors can simply overlay a new solid surface one, over the top of it. And instead of taking out your existing cupboard carcasses (and putting them into landfill) they can simply replace the doors, drawer fronts, panels and trims.
QUARTZ OVERLAY WORKTOPS
You can completely change the look of your kitchen with no fuss or mess by choosing a Quartz overlay. Quartz offers the stunning aesthetic of granite and marble and is a great choice for any contemporary kitchen.
Quartz is also extremely durable and you can have confidence that it will withstand the demands of everyday use. It’s resistant to scratches and heat, as well as mould, bacteria and mildew. Save yourself time and money by having the quartz fitted over your existing worktop. The team will measure and cut the quartz to size so that it fits seamlessly into your kitchen. Choose from a great range of finishes and colours, from a beautiful marble or flecked with different patterns for a luxurious design. To find out more pop into the Dream Doors showroom at 10 Silver Street, Bradford on Avon or call 01225 282172. • dreamdoors.co.uk
