Winton Community Academy Newsletter Issue 7
Summer Term
Principal’s Update It has been an excellent year for Winton Community Academy! When I arrived at Winton in September it had had a difficult few years and I was yet another change! However I could tell instantly that this was going to be a positive and successful year. There was a determination from staff and students and an understanding that the journey towards being the good school we all want at the heart of our community had begun. The students at Winton are fabulous and I can honestly say that these young people are the most polite, friendliest and positive students I have ever had the pleasure of working with. The OFSTED inspections in November and April and the DfE visit in March have indicated we were making good progress; 70% of lessons were judged to be good and a number of lessons were seen to be outstanding. This has been the key improvement this year, the quality of teaching and learning in the Academy has improved. ‘Outstanding’ teaching and learning has been observed across the curriculum. The Performing Arts department have had another superb year with highlights including the pantomime, Red Cross Dance performance, Carol Service, Talent Show, We Will Rock You and ‘The Last Resort’. In November we will see our next whole school performance of ‘High School Musical’ which I am certain will be fabulous. The PE department have also had an excellent year with success in rugby, netball and athletics and a stunning sports day in which Newton were the winners for a second year running. It has also been a great year for innovation. The ABC curriculum has been a great success with Allotments and Bees this year and next year Chickens. The other ABC project, the nature garden was opened last week at the most recent evolve evening. We have seen a large increase in the use of technology this year with iPads and personal devices having had a big impact on the way we teach in classroom, next year's new Year 7s will be embracing this new technology with each having their own device from September. There are too many amazing things to mention this year, with trips to Marwell, Krakow in Poland and New York, the brilliant dance and drama performances, individual success in area athletics, excellent performances in Youth Speaks, fabulous maths, science and technology days for Year 4, 5
and 6 students. Trips to the theatre to see ‘Blood Brothers’, ‘War Horse’ and ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’, celebration assemblies with stars of the week and so this list goes on. Like so many of you I love Winton and we love it because of the people in it, both the staff and the students. I have lost track of the number of times I have heard staff say how lucky we are to have such fabulous students, and we are. Being a Headteacher is a fantastic job, however, as I am sure you can imagine there can be some challenging days. Every week has two guaranteed high points, the first is the Book of Distinction in which students bring their incredible work. I have been particularly amazed by Harry Escudier's volcano and Beth Adams' writing in English and the many students who have been in the book on multiple occasions, Luis Wyatt, Lewis Patterson, Aaron Wells and so many more. The second highlight of my week is teaching. I have been blessed this year with a wonderful English class who continue to remind me why I love teaching so much. Teachers often go into education because they want to make a difference to young people, what young people don’t realise is what a difference they make to adults. Winton is an incredible school because of the people in it. The staff are creative, hard working and completely committed to the students. The students are a credit to Winton, their families and themselves and we are all immensely proud of every one of them. Thank you for all you have done this year as parents to support us on our journey, thank you to all the staff and governors for their continued commitment and energy and thank you to every individual student for being part of our fabulous school.
