From Erin Freeman, Artistic Director If you’re new to the Wintergreen Music Festival, welcome! You’ll find much to delight your senses. Take a look at our various series, our special offerings, and our opportunities for musical enrichment. Or, pick a weekend experience that suits your schedule and musical tastes. With more than 150 events, we have something for everyone! This year has been an exciting one for Wintergreen Music. We have a new look and a new name; we have developed a strategic plan to carry our work into the future; and we have seen a record number of applications to our Academy, so much so that we had to create an additional program to meet demand. We have also revamped our Festival schedule slightly, making Wednesdays about exploration and discovery (Fresh Perspectives), turning Fridays into our wild card night of pops programming (Fiery Fridays), and converting Coffee & Kids into Social Sundays – family-friendly concerts at the Dunlop Pavilion and Valley partners, combining great food with great performances. And, we’re updating our Music in Unusual Places to a community-based program, teaching our students the power of performance (Community Connections).

With all of this change, however, at our core we are the same. We inspire, educate, and welcome audiences, students, and professional musicians alike through the power of music. We feature our flagship MountainTop Masterworks series, bringing the brilliance of a live orchestra to the majesty of the mountains. We present Mix, Mingle & Music events, short but content-rich concerts with a preceding cocktail (half) hour. Our Morning Seminars and Music 101 series give patrons and students opportunities to discover new musical pathways. And, of course, our Cooking Classes are back with four fabulous chefs, all hand-selected by Wintergreen favorite, Tucker Yoder. To celebrate all of these exciting changes, this summer we’re exploring the idea of transformation. From the evolution of the music of Beethoven to the musical interpretation of art, poetry, and theater; from the voice of a bird to the voice of a wolf; from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde – if it has transformed, it is part of the Wintergreen Music Festival! And with artists such as Orion Weiss, Joseph Conyers, and John Morris Russell, you, our audience, will be transformed, too!

MountainTop Masterworks II: Orion Weiss Plays Beethoven SATURDAY, JULY 20 AT 7:30 PM SUNDAY, JULY 21 AT 3:00 PM Victor Yampolsky, Conductor Orion Weiss, Piano Jennifer Higdon: “String” from Concerto for Orchestra Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major, Op. 58 Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 5 in D Major Tuneful, expansive, and romantic, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ fifth symphony is the perfect piece for the idyllic Wintergreen setting. With Beethoven’s fiercely personal and triumphant fourth piano concerto performed by international superstar Orion Weiss, this concert is sure to be a highlight of the summer. Reserve both days on your schedule – you might just want to hear this one twice!

MountainTop Masterworks III: Grandeur & Glory SATURDAY, JULY 27 AT 7:30 PM SUNDAY, JULY 28 AT 3:00 PM Erin Freeman, Conductor Arianna Zukerman, Soprano Soloists from the Wintergreen Festival Vocal Intensive Members of the Richmond Symphony Chorus and the Oratorio Society of Virginia The 2019 Sing with Us! Chorus in the majestic Cantata No. 71 by J.S. Bach. Imagine: celebratory trumpets, festive strings, and uplifting vocals, all filling the Dunlop Pavilion with grandeur. Follow that with Louise Farrenc’s third symphony, a Bizet-meets-Beethoven masterpiece that is bold, energetic, and downright glorious (and that was ignored for too long because it wasn’t proper for a woman to compose such ambitious music). This summer we are bringing back her music and legacy, thanks in part to a grant from the Women’s Philharmonic.

MountainTop Masterworks IV: Season Finale – Pictures at an Exhibition SATURDAY, AUGUST 3 AT 7:30 PM SUNDAY, AUGUST 4 AT 3:00 PM John Morris Russell, Conductor Joseph Conyers, Double Bass Stella Sung: “The Peace Corps” from Rockwell Reflections Tan Dun: Contrabass Concerto – Wolf Totem Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition, orchestrated by Maurice Ravel In this not to be missed season finale, we bring our theme of transformation full circle with musical representations of art, life, and literature. Stella Sung’s piece features “musical Americana” inspired by Norman Rockwell’s portrait of JFK. Tan Dun’s Contrabass Concerto is a musical ode to Jiang Rong’s Wolf Totem, an epic novel about the extinction of the Mongolian culture and it’s sacred animal, the wolf. With Joseph Conyers’ expert playing, John Morris Russell’s engaging conducting, and Mussorgsky’s grand tribute to visual art, your transformative summer journey ends with this spectacular concert.

Academy Masterclasses & Seminars We are unique among Festivals in that we allow patrons to observe our students in classes and seminars. Such access creates a support system for the students who are far away from home and is a fascinating window into the life of a developing musician. We present multiple masterclasses per week, as well as in-depth seminars on topics such as conducting, composition, and professional development. You will be amazed at the significant progress a student can make in a short time.
