DESIGN INSPIRATION

OTHER WORKS

For design inspiration, referencing other kinetic typography videos was very important. The compositions that gave the most influence were very simple and did not use a whole lot of “z space. The use of graphic elements also added to the compositions, but did not seem extremely necessary for this project.

The simple color schemes and gradient backgrounds were also elements that inspired the design of this project. Too much color confuses the eye, so a two to three color combination was chosen.

COLORS

The game this project is based, Portal, on has a blue and orange color scheme. Bringing those colors into the kinetic type adds a link to the game that people can link to their experiences they have experienced while playing. Because the quote in this project is a part when the main bad guy experiences a mood change from evil to

even more evil, a background change is used. A blue gradient for the first personality, and an orange for her change of attitude.

TEXTURES & TEXT

In the game Portal there is a very grundgy old warehouse look and feel. To bring this into the kinetic typography video, a texture was added over the color gradients. Having the texture also adds a layer of depth to the composition. The text used in the project is Helvetica Neue Heavy because that is the type used in the

Aperture Science logo from the game. To add another level fo the project, key pop words are a different color from the black text.

PLANNING AHEAD

STORY BOARD∙SCRIP T

TEXTURES & TEXT

The first step of planning was to write out the script in main groups and phrases to get a feel of how the timing might work. Next, a storyboard was drawn out with possible layouts for each group of words. Transitions were considered as well as word sizes. Many of the boards were layed out well enough to keep for the final video,

but a few, mainly the boards with longer words like neurotoxin and incinerated, had to be refigured and tweaked for a nicer composition.

COMING TO LIFE

SCREE N SHOTS ∙ANIMATION

PROJECT IN ACTION

Using Adobe AfterEffects, the video slowly came to life. Each word was made into it’s own layer and synched up to the audio clip from Portal. Most of the movement was created by a null object that a camera was linked to. This way, instead of animating every layer of text, there was just one object to create keyframes for

with the exception of a few words here and there for minor details. After animating, colors for the pop words were added to add empasis on the key points.
