It may only seem a short time ago you were considering which high school to attend and already you’re making decisions that will set you off on the right career path once you leave. In order to help you select your options we have put together this useful guide. This will help you pick the right options now which will then support your transition to further education after school.
What potential routes can I take when I have completed my GCSEs? There are a number of different routes you can take once you have completed your GCSEs. Below are some examples of what routes you could take.
Level 2 (same academic level as GCSE)
Level 3
Vocational
A – levels
Coursework, practical and exam based learning.
Academic, mostly exam based subjects.
What Next? Higher Education degree course at University.
Mixed Programme Mixture of A-level and Vocational Qualifications.
T – levels
Choosing Your Options We know your school will be giving you the best advice possible when it comes to choosing which GCSEs to study, but we want to provide you with some information about what choices you have when you finish school.
Some questions to ask may be: What are my long-term goals? You may not know yet what you want to study after leaving school or what career you want in the future. That is perfectly normal and you have plenty of time to consider this over the coming years. However, if you do have a career or university course in mind it can be useful to work backwards. Look at what qualifications you will need in the future and ensure you are not limiting yourself now.
What Level 2 courses do you accept when I am applying to Winstanley? In order to study a full A-level programme, we will accept one BTEC L2 alongside 7 GCSE's as part of your best 8 results. To do a mixed A-level and vocational programme we will accept a maximum of two L2 BTEC's and 6 GCSE's from your best 8 results.
Frequently Asked Questions If I choose Double Science at school, can I still choose a single A-level Science? Yes you can! If I choose a Level 2 BTEC in a subject e.g. Sport, can I still study it at A-level? Yes you can! Will a Level 1 qualification be taken into account when applying for Winstanley? Unfortunately not, we can only accept Level 2 qualifications or above.
A mixture of classroom learning and ‘on-the-job’ experience during an industry placement.
Apprenticeships Paid employment alongside education.
Do I have to choose a subject at GCSE if I'd like to study it after school? At this stage, it is unlikely that your subject choices will impact you significantly as ‘essential’ subjects such as English, Maths and Science are compulsory at GCSE. For entry to Winstanley College the only ‘optional’ subjects you have to take at GCSE in order to study at A-level are Spanish and French. To study A-level Music we do ask for a Grade 5 or above in music theory. Any other subject can be chosen without prior experience.
Where can I find out more information? Your teachers at school will be able to give you information about what specific subjects involve and the school’s Careers Adviser will help you with looking ahead to your long-term goals. You are also very welcome to ask us any questions you may have about your future study. Our Schools’ Liaison Team visit local schools regularly so look out for them and ask them any questions you have. Alternatively you can contact the admissions team by emailing admissions@winstanley.ac.uk or calling 01695 628610. Visit our Winstanley careers page at www.winstanley.ac.uk. Remember that your parents, friends and family know you the best and can also offer support and guidance when making important decisions like this.
