$15,000 - $25,000

Nationally recognized painter and printmaker, Florence McClung was born in St. Louis and, at the young age of three, moved to Texas with her family. As a child she took drawing lessons from Frank Reaugh and a budding interest in art was formed. She graduated from Bryan High School in Dallas. In 1917 she married Rufus A. McClung and together they had a son, Elliott McClung. As a young wife and mother, her keen interest in art did not wane. She studied still life painting with Jessie Davis and soon began to work under the guidance of Frank Klepper. In McClung’s painting, Klepper’s Studio on Fairmount at Dallas, Texas, 1930-31 (Lot 160.), one is given an inside view into his studio. To the upper right is Klepper’s painting, Catfish, c. 1928, which came up for sale in the 2015 David Dike Fine Art Texas Art Auction and set a record sales price of $23,500 for his work that still stands today.

McClung continued her studies at the Art Institute of Dallas with Olin Travis and Thomas Stell. In 1929, she accepted an offer from John H. Burma, president of Trinity University, then located at Waxahachie, to teach and serve as the head of the art department. She fulfilled this role until 1942. Around 1931 or 1932, she started studying with Alexandre Hogue in Oak Lawn, and later in Taos, NM. McClung exhibited her art throughout Texas and nationally, receiving awards and recognition. Her work rose in the ranks of the Texas Regionalists, and beyond, despite working in a time that was marked by discriminatory practices towards women artists. Early in 1940, one of her paintings, Lancaster Valley, 1936, was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

157. FLORENCE MCCLUNG (Am. 1894-1992)

In 1985, while she was still living, the Dallas Museum of Art mounted an exhibition, Lone Star Regionalism: The Dallas Nine and Their Circle, 1928-1945. Significantly, she was the only woman painter and printmaker to be included in the exhibition and catalog that recognized the important accomplishments of the Texas Regionalists. McClung’s Triple Underpass, 1945 painting came up for sale in the 2018 David Dike Fine Art Auction. Selling for $252,000, it set a new auction record for her work and doubled and, in some cases, tripled the auction records of her male contemporaries. Clearly, her work is still cutting paths and opening doors. Curators and collectors have discussed mounting a retrospective of her work; an idea still held dearly by many.

Her works are represented in the permanent collections of museums throughout the United States, including the Metropolitan Museum, New York; the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; the Dallas Museum of Art; the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Canyon; the Mint Museum, Charlotte, North Carolina; the High Museum, Atlanta; the Ogden Museum, New Orleans; and the Delgado Museum, New Orleans.

Notes that Ziegler typed in the late 1950s or early 1960s about the work offer a rare insight into his artistic inspiration and process: In 1911 he witnessed a fireworks display at Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania “when the Whistler ‘nocturne idea’ still echoed in my art consciousness. The initial sketch that I completed the next morning passed through a long period of neglect only to be reconditioned a quarter of a century later in Texas,” (suggesting a. c. 1936 date.) He then added by hand the comment that recently he had adopted the title of “The Rocket” to the painting because of “unprecedented progress and interest in space flight.”

DAVID DIKE FINE

Dallas born artist Olin Travis began painting at an early age, studying under Frank Reaugh and Vivian Aunspaugh. In 1909, he left Dallas to study at the Art Institute of Chicago and later became an associate instructor. He also became an instructor and the director of the Chicago Commercial Art School and worked as a commercial artist before returning to Dallas with his wife, Kathryne Hail Travis, in 1923. Together, he and Kathryne founded the Dallas Art Institute in 1926 and taught through the Ozark Summer School which they established in Cass, Arkansas.

An important artist and teacher, Travis’s influence was significant in the Dallas Nine group of artists and beyond. During his lifetime, Travis’s paintings were featured in numerous shows throughout Texas, New York, and Colorado and 20+ solo exhibitions were mounted. Today, his work can be found in the following collections: Dallas Museum of Art, TX; Elisabet Ney Museum and Texas Fine Arts Association, Austin, TX; Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi, TX; and Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, TX to name a few.

San Antonio born artist Julian Onderdonk is notably the one of the most highly valued Texas impressionist painters of the early 20th century. His career began early, as he was the son of Robert Jenkins Onderdonk, a prominent portrait painter and teacher of the San Antonio area.

Julian, moved to New York in 1901 where he studied with William Merritt Chase, the Art Students League of New York, Robert Henri, and other influential artists. For a few years, he divided his time between Texas and New York, sometimes working under various pseudonyms, but in 1909 he moved back to San Antonio for good. It was there in the Hill Country of Texas that his genius flourished. Emily Ballew Neff describes Onderdonk’s sensitive and breathtaking works from this time period in her essay in Julian Onderdonk: A Catalogue Raisonné (Halff, 2016).

Paintings of the flat and brush-filled arid lands of Southwest Texas appear to feature a lacy, filigree screen across the canvas. Onderdonk painted landscapes that are lyrical and complex, filled with strong color harmonies, shimmering light effects, delicate brushwork, and reflective of a temperament keenly in tune with the distinctive and varied qualities of the Texas Countryside.

Onderdonk’s paintings were widely exhibited across the country throughout his lifetime. Posthumously and most recently there have been several major retrospectives at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; The Dallas Museum of Art; and the San Antonio Museum of Art. His works can be found in the following collections: El Paso Museum of Art, TX; Dallas Museum of Art, TX; Witte Memorial Museum, San Antonio, TX; Stark Museum of Art, TX; San Antonio Museum of Art, TX; Ogden Museum of Southern Art, LA; Amon Carter Museum of Art, TX; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX to name a few.

Fort Worth born artist George Grammer is recognized as an important post-World War II modernist painter. He attended Paschal High School where he studied art with Creola Searcy and received early recognition for his artistic abilities. He was awarded a scholarship to Texas Wesleyan College, where he studied with Kelly Fearing, and subsequently was introduced to Dickson Reeder and the Fort Worth Circle group of artists. Later on, he became the youngest member of that group which embraced modernism and abstraction in contrast to realism, which was prioritized by the Dallas Nine and their circle.

In 1952 Grammer moved to Mexico, studying painting at Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende. From there he studied at the Art Students League in New York, married June Amos, and settled in New York. He gained representation in galleries in New York, New Jersey, and Maine. Even though he lived on the East Coast for the rest of his life, he maintained close connections with friends and family in Fort Worth and continued to exhibit and receive recognition for his work in his beloved hometown. His most notable body of work began in 1950 and its origin is described in the book Intimate Modernism, Fort Worth Circle Artists in the 1940s (Barker and Myers, 2008).

A chance nighttime bus trip from Jacksboro to Fort Worth provided the inspiration for Grammer’s best-known works. While gazing through the bus window into the darkness, he was suddenly captivated by the patterns of light emanating from a distant oil-drilling rig. The image of the illuminated rig became the basis for a series of abstract paintings of nighttime industrial scenes.

Two retrospective exhibitions have highlighted his legacy — George Grammer: Full Circle held in 2017 at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth co-curated by BB Moncrief and Carter Bowden, and Texas Moderns: George Grammer, co-curated by Patrick Kelly and Scott Barker for The Old Jail Art Center in Albany in 2014. Grammer’s works can be found in the permanent collections of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Dallas Museum of Art, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Longview Museum of Fine Arts, Old Jail Art Center, and San Antonio Art League & Museum.

Seymour Fogel studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and the Art Students League under Leon Kroll and George Brandt Bridgeman where he mastered realism and executing the human form. Diego Rivera took him on as an assistant to complete a mural at Rockefeller Center. In the 1930s Fogel traversed the country by train rendering imagery from the Great Depression, these works have landed in collections such as the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. and the Ogden Collection in New Orleans, LA. In 1946 started his professorship in the art department at the University of Texas at Austin where he joined the ranks of forward thinking modernist painters. This first decade of modernist outpouring included 6 series: pastiche, mother and child, seraphic, limestone, flagellant, and multi-style.

This work is reproduced as plate no VI-9 in the book, Ward Lockwood 1894-1963, by Charles C. Eldredge, © The Univ. of Kansas Museum of Art. From the book, “The drawing style of the coastal sketches was more happily translated to a series of abstractions which Lockwood produced about 1950. In these abstractions there is a new delicacy and a feeling for an overall, uniform image. In this the drawings show affinities with the intricate constructions etched by Ynez Johnston, whose work was admired and collected by Lockwood. The abstraction also evokes memories of Paul Klee’s fantastic drawings, a source which had particular impact on Lockwood.”

note: Albright lived in Dalhart, Texas for several years. Interested in adobe structures, he designed many replicas for the city including his own studio.

Landscape, 1958

Mary Sloan’s vibrant and expressive style can be seen throughout a variety of mediums including but not limited to oil, mosaic, and watercolor. Having lived in both San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and Santa Fe, New Mexico before moving back to Texas, she was inspired and deeply influenced by nature. In both Desert Landscape and River Rocks Sloan’s desire to find balance between the beauty and brutality of nature is a profound influence in her work. As she stated, “there is much of nature’s constant struggle or combat yet beyond, behind, or near a struggle there is usually a stabilizing thing of beauty of strange conformity” (Sloan, Discovery).

If any dispute arises after the sale, our sales records shall be conclusive in all respects.

Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size and whether or not it has been repaired or restored.

12. THE PURCHASER EXPRESSLY ACKNOWLEDGES AND AGREES THAT IN NO EVENT SHALL WE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY COMPENSATORY, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES. IN NO EVENT WILL OUR LIABILITY OR THE LIABILITY OF DDFAA TO A PURCHASER EXCEED THE PURCHASE PRICE ACTUALLY PAID.

DELIVERY; SHIPPING; AND HANDLING.

13. All deliveries will be shipped COD unless otherwise agreed to by purchaser and DDFAA. If packing and handling of purchased lots is done by us, it is done at the entire risk of the purchaser. We are not liable for any acts or omissions of carriers or packers, including those we may recommend. Such carriers or packers may carry their own insurance and any claim for loss or damage should be addressed directly to them. No items will be shipped unless we specifically agree to do so.

14. Unless prior arrangements have been made with DDFAA, there may be a seven day waiting period if purchasing artwork with a personal or company check. To avoid delay of this sort, bidders are encouraged to prearrange check approval or establish a line of credit with DDFAA by calling (214) 720-4044 no later than 5:00 pm on Friday, October 24, 2025 There will be no exceptions. Bank card purchases will be honored at our option.

MISCELLANEOUS.

15. These Conditions of Sale and the purchaser’s and our respective rights and obligations hereunder are governed by Texas law. By bidding at an auction, whether in person or by agent, telephone or other means, the purchaser or bidder agrees to be bound by these Conditions of Sale and to consent to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state courts of, and the federal courts sitting in, the State of Texas. All of our obligations under these Conditions of Sale and the obligations of purchaser to pay, are performable in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas.

16. These Conditions of Sale shall bind the successors and assigns of all bidders and purchasers and inure to the benefit of our successors and assigns. No waiver, amendment or modification of the terms hereof (other than posted notices or oral announcements during the sale) shall bind us unless specifically stated in writing by us. If any part of these Conditions of Sale is for any reason invalid or unenforceable, the rest shall remain valid and enforceable.

17. As a service to those wishing to place bids, we may at our discretion accept bids without charge in advance of sale by telephone, or in writing on bidding forms available from us. “Buy” bids will not be acceptable; all bids must state the highest bid price the bidder is willing to pay. As noted above, a premium payable by the purchaser will be added to the bid price. In the event identical bids are submitted, the earliest will take precedence. Absentee bids shall be executed in competition with other absentee bids, any applicable reserve and bids from the audience. Successful absentee bids may not be acknowledged, but sale results and selling prices for any lot may be obtained by telephoning us during normal business hours. We assume no responsibility for failure to execute these bids for any reason whatsoever.

18. As a convenience to our clients, we furnish pre-sale estimates for all lots included in the catalogue. These are intended as an approximate guide to current market value, and should not be interpreted as a price or as an appraisal. The final bid may well be less or more than any estimate printed.

19. EXCEPT AS EXPRESSLY PROVIDED ABOVE, ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD “AS-IS” AND NEITHER THE AUCTIONEER, DAVID DIKE, THE DAVID DIKE FINE ART AUCTION, DAVID DIKE FINE ART, L.L.C. OR DIKE MANAGEMENT LLC, NOR THE CONSIGNOR NOR THE AGENT OF ANY OF THEM MAKES ANY REPRESENTATION OR WARRANTY, EXPRESS OR IMPLIES, AS TO THE TITLE, MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS OR CONDITION OF THE PROPERTY OR AS TO THE CORRECTNESS OF DESCRIPTION, GENUINENESS, ATTRIBUTION, PROVENANCE OR PERIOD OF THE PROPERTY OR AS TO WHETHER THE PURCHASER ACQUIRES ANY COPYRIGHTS OR OTHER INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS IN LOTS SOLD OR AS TO WHETHER A WORK OF ART IS SUBJECT TO THE ARTIST’S MORAL RIGHTS OR OTHER RESIDUAL RIGHTS OF THE ARTIST.

20. All rights to this catalogue are reserved. Some of the images may be the subject of copyright or other rights of the artist or owner. No part of this catalogue may be reproduced without permission.
