BENEFITS OF VEOLIA’S

ENGINEERED FUEL PROGRAM

A

cleaner, more circular path for waste

This program is more environmentally friendly compared to landfill or waste-to-energy disposal methods, with lower greenhouse gas emissions.

The Engineered Fuels Program serves as a solution to zero-waste-to-landfill initiatives.

Material is considered a non-hazardous secondary material product instead of waste.

Engineered fuel replaces fossil fuels used in the production of cement and lime products.

Engineered fuel helps kilns reduce gross CO2 emissions

The use of engineered fuel in cement production benefits the cement industry’s goal to be carbon neutral by 2050

It also provides secure destruction and brand protection to prevent materials from showing up in secondary markets.

Inorganic components are incorporated into the cement product and provide needed raw materials, eliminating ash sent to a landfill.

ENGINEERED FUELS FROM SINGLE USE TECHNOLOGIES

Waste Converted to Energy for Cement Production

240,000 lb of waste recovered annually

Proven impact for our customers

Veolia’s

Requirements Are Flexible

“Our bags are a blend of many different plastics. Some vendors said we can only take three specific plastics or none at all. Veolia had no problem processing the majority of the plastics, including Styrofoam.”

Converting 20,000 Pounds/Month of Waste to Fuel

“Veolia’s solution uses a process which segregates out this waste stream, turning nonrecyclables into fuel. At the end of every month we get a report of the number of pounds that are used

Used in the production of cement

1,000

as fuel, and this month it was just over 20,000 pounds. That’s 20,000 pounds per month that would have been in the landfill but is now getting converted into usable fuel.”

Reducing Costs: Disposing of Waste as Engineered Fuel

“We get charged by the cubic yard box. If we dispose of it the traditional way and burn it up, it costs us just over twice as much per box. If we dispose of it as an engineered fuel, because of the economic value of that fuel, we see a significant cost savings. It’s being green in many different ways.”

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS

EXAMPLES OF MATERIALS SUITABLE FOR ENGINEERED FUELS

• Post consumer material

• Off specification commercial products

• Manufacturing intermediates

• Scrap

• Biogenic materials

• Industrial/commercial byproducts

• Industrial debris

• Non-hazardous pharmaceuticals

• Consumer product recalls

To qualify for this program, each potential material is evaluated and, if approved, is accepted as a fuel ingredient and not a discarded waste. The material is prepared through a series of steps, including administrative screening, shredding, removal of chlorinated materials and contaminants, and blending to meet both regulatory requirements and kiln specifications. Once prepared, it is managed as a valuable product until its final use at the kiln. EF is a 100% closed loop circular economy solution, as the ash is integrated into the product and not sent to a landfill.

REDUCE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

GHG emitted when 1 ton of typical fuel* is:

Landfilled: 1.85 metric ton (mt) CO2eq

Used as Engineered Fuel: .59 mt CO2eq

Savings: 1.26 mt!

Plus EF helps kilns avoid emissions of 1.06 mt per ton of EF combusted.

ACCEPTED DELIVERY METHODS

Material can be received in either containerized or bulk form

• Drums

• Cubic yard boxes/bags

• Palletized materials

• Bales

• Roll-offs

• End dumps

APPROVAL PROCESS

• Complete a Waste Information Profile (WIP)

• Provide a sample of the material if needed

• Most site approvals occur within 3-4 days

• Materials containing liquids may be allowed

*Based on a typical fuel
