WINONA STATE FOOTBALL Backfield depth

WSU did not lose a step on snaps where Roebuck was rested. Ty Gavin (6 carries, 84 yards, 1 TD) and Dominik London (6 carries, 38 yards) both brought some bounce and pace to the Warrior run game. Get your kicks

One question that loomed large for Winona State in 2021 was the kicking game. Jacob Scott, a transfer from Cisco (Texas) Junior College, went 6-for-6 on PAT's and was 1-for-2 in field goal attempts. Scott connected from 36 yards and missed from 33 yards against CSP. Score, after score, after score

Winona State rattled off 30 points in the first half before CSP got on the board in the Warriors week one win. The 23 points in the second quarter beat all 2019 second frames in terms of point proudction. All-purpose production

As expected, Jake Balliu covered ground in a several different ways racking up 84 kick return yards (3 KO returns, 2 punt returns) and had two catches for 74 yards and a TD. Speaking of punting

Warrior fans were curious how the punting duties would be handled in week one. Tristan Root punted four times with a longest effort of 47 yards, while Jacob Scott had one punt, which went for 39 yards. Something to work on

One area for growth in the Warriors kicking game is kickoff consistency. Two WSU kickoffs went out-of-bounds, triggering penalties. Until we meet again

In recent years, MSU-M and Winona State have not faced off every year, due to the the NSIC schedule matrix. However, after playing each other this year in week two, the two teams will play again in week four in 2022. Winona State Football - Visit www.WINONASTATEWARRIORS.COM for more information

WINONA STATE FOOTBALL Defense wins championships

In addition to Clay Schueffner's NSIC POW performance on defense vs. CSP, Richard Azunna racked up six total tackles in the game. NSIC South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Cam Gavin had five tackles and a pass breakup.

As a unit

The Warrior defense had six tackles for loss vs. Concordia - St. Paul. Clay Schueffner, Brian Corbins, Jr. Joseph Demro, Charlie Dennis, AJ Scaife and Cole Wright all contributed to stops behind the line of scrimmage.

Hurry up, hurry back

Trey Telez and Joseph Demro both had QB hurries against CSP, and AJ Scaife had a forced fumble on the day.

Lap around the NSIC

The South Division of the NSIC football ranks was 4-3 in week one; in addition to the Warrior win, Augustana, Minnesota State - Mankato and Wayne State all claimed opener wins. In the North, Bemidji State, Minnesota Duluth and MSUMoorhead all had 'W's to start the year.

Towards the top

At 1-0 on the year, the Warriors share the top of the South with Divisional foes Augustana, Minnesota State and Wayne State.

Payday

Jake Balliu and Ethan Wittenburg both had touchdown catches in week one. Balliu's was a 65 yard effort, while Wittenburg's was a 48 yard strike.

Two for 71

The longest Warrior scoring drive in week one took only two plays; WSU traveled 71 yards for a TD, combining a six-yard rush and 65-yard pass play for seven points. Winona State Football - Visit www.WINONASTATEWARRIORS.COM for more information

WINONA STATE FOOTBALL Great night, great crowd

Winona State showed the NSIC world how excited their fan base was to have football back; WSU had a opening week crowd of 3,512. The contest lasted 2 hours and 34 minutes and was played in front of a raucous student section.

Creeping up there

With the 47-6 Warrior win last week, head coach Tom Sawyer sits at 191 career victories, all at the NCAA Division II level and all with Winona State.

The long and short of it

Three Warrior scoring drives were six plays from scrimmage or more, with a 10 play, 69yard drive to in the first quarter. In contrast, Winona State scored five times on drives of three plays or less, including a Javian Roebuck 64-yard run for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter. Share the wealth

Owen Burke completed passes to nine different receivers against CSP, and connected no more than twice with any one target. Jake Balliu, Ethan Wittenberg, Dakota Matthees, Darryl Williams and J. Michael Young all had two grabs in the game. Light it up

Barring any schedule changes, the 2021 WSU - CSP matchup was the only night game the Warriors will play in the regular season in 2021. A healthy average

Winona State averaged 8.5 yards a carry in their week one opener against CSP. The Warriors rushed for four touchdowns, three scored by Roebuck and one by Ty Gavin. Batting 1.000

Winona State backup quarterback Trevor Paulsen was 1-for-1 on the day in his only passing attempt. Paulsen took over for Burke mid-way through the 4th quarter. Winona State Football - Visit www.WINONASTATEWARRIORS.COM for more information
