Regular Season Recap
Winona State completes the 2023-24 regular season with a 10-17 overall record and a 9-13 NSIC mark. The Warriors overcame a 0-5 start to the campaign to earn a bid in the NSIC postseason, winning five of their final seven NSIC contests.
Warriors Postseason History
WSU last appeared in the NSIC tournament following the 2021-22 season, bowing out to Bemidji State, 6351 on Wednesday, Feb. 23. The Warrior-Dragon playoff contest will mark the eighth time since 201516 that Winona State has qualified for the NSIC Tournament. MSU Moorhead and Winona State faced off in the 2019 tournament, a 72-67 Dragon victory in Sioux Falls, and in the 2020 postseason, an 82-77 Warrior win in McCown

Head coach Ana Wurtz, and assistant coaches Hannah McGlone and Emily Kieck, have all competed in the NSIC tournament as student-athletes. Wurtz was a key member of the 2006-2010 Warrior teams, while McGlone played for WSU between 2014-2018. Kieck competed for Winona State between 20172022.
The Warrior coaching staff hold several spots in the Winona State record book. Wurtz is sixth all-time in points scored at Winona State (1,355), Kieck is third all-time in assists at WSU (415) and McGlone owns the top Warrior mark in career rebounds (949).
Emma Carpenter went 2-of-2 from the foul line on Saturday, Feb. 24 in a senior night win over Minnesota Crookston. Carpenter collected three rebounds and 10 points while hitting 2-of-5 from behind the arc. Carpenter also grabbed 2 two steals in the win over UMC.
Alex Dornfeld hauled in six rebounds and scored 17 points against the Golden Eagles on Saturday in an impressive senior day performance Dornfeld was 3-of-9 behind the arc and was a perfect 2-of-2 from the foul line against Minnesota Crookston
Also on Saturday, senior Ava Sergio went 4-of-7 from the floor and was 2-of-2 from the foul line. Sergio collected nine rebounds, scored 10 points, and gathered both Warrior blocks in the contest.
Vanessa Alexander collected three key offensive rebounds in the Warrior win over Minnesota Crookston on Saturday and is third on the team on the season in offensive boards with 37.
Alex Dornfeld has registered six double-doubles this year, including season-best 14-point, 12-board performances against Augustana and Wayne State.
Alex Dornfeld is the top Warrior rebounder, averaging 7.5 rebounds/game and the leading scorer for WSU, averaging 9.3 points/game.
Olivia Gamoke leads WSU in minutes per game (30 4)
Emma Carpenter leads the team in steals with 21 total, while Ava Sergio has a team-best 11 blocks
Mattie Schimenz leads the Warriors in 3-point shooting percentage, going 20-of-55 (36.4%) so far this season from 3-point territory.
Olivia Gamoke (246), Alex Dornfeld (232), and Emma Carpenter (227) have all surpassed the 200-point plateau on the season for Winona State.

WSU sends seniors out in style in 70-62 win over Golden Eagles
WINONA, Minn - The Winona State University women's basketball team celebrated senior day in style, using a battle-back effort to defeat the University of Minnesota Crookston 70-62 on Saturday, February 24 in McCown Gymnasium, home of WNB Financial Court
Winona State (10-17, 9-13 NSIC) honored five Warrior seniors; Alex Dornfeld, Emma Carpenter, Ava Sergio, Kaitlyn Schrimpf, and Vanessa Alexander following the contest. WSU was faced with a red-hot Minnesota Crookston team that raced out to a 21-11 lead in the first quarter, but head coach Ana Wurtz saw her team exhibit grit in the contest, closing the gap in the second half and eventually securing the 70-62 Warrior win.
How it Happened:
UMC raced out to a 17-7 lead over Winona State in the first quarter, as the Golden Eagles hit their first three 3-point attempts of the game.
Hailey Markworth and Mattie Schimenz both hit layups late to help close the first quarter Golden Eagle scoring surge, but UMC held a 21-11 advantage after the first ten minutes.
In the second quarter, Winona State began to find an offensive rhythm, with Ava Sergio scoring in the paint at the 8:31 mark and then adding another layup and pair of made free throws moments later. Alex Dornfeld and Schimenz added 3-pointers to the Warrior effort in the second quarter, as Winona State pulled to within four points at the halftime buzzer, 36-32

The third quarter saw Winona State and Minnesota Crookston trade buckets for the entire 10 minutes, with WSU being led by Alex Dornfeld and Emma Carpenter from behind the arc, as well as Vivica Bretton, who also hit a triple with under three minutes to go in the period WSU and UMC both tallied 18 points in the frame
In the final ten minutes, WSU combined a strong Warrior effort on defense - holding the Golden Eagles to eight points - while opening up the offense to the tune of 20 points Olivia Gamoke, Ava Sergio, and Alex Dornfeld all scored in quick succession three minutes into the stanza, giving WSU the lead for good and breaking a 58-58 tie. Emma Carpenter and Mattie Schimenz would combine to go 4-for-4 from the free throw line late, icing the 70-62 Warrior win.

WSU had a 39-32 edge in total rebounds and held an impressive 9-3 edge on the offensive glass. The Warriors were an impressive 10-of-11 (90.9%) at the free throw line while UMC was 5-of-6 at the stripe.
