The 2021-22 season is a welcome sight for the Warriors, having last played a full season in 2019-20, going 17-11 and qualifying for the NSIC postseason. In the pandemic-shorted 2020-21 season, WSU saw four games canceled due to Covid protocols. Playing just 12 contests, Winona State finished 5-7 overall, 5-6 in NSIC play. This season, veteran head coach Scott Ballard and his staff have a deep roster of 17 student-athletes, led by WSU Player to Watch Taylor Hustad, an experienced Warrior whose all-round game reflects strong outings in points, rebounds and floor burns. Hustad's hustle sets the bar for Winona State and raises the level of play within the team. Speaking of experience, a new face with a veteran game is Lauren Fech, a transfer from MSU Moorhead who adds an element of NSIC knowledge to the team. The coaching staff are excited about the defensive presence that Fech brings and could be an X-factor for the team. Winona State post player Emma Fee had some strong outings last season, highlighted by a 30-point outburst at Sioux Falls and an 11-rebound effort at Upper Iowa. WSU is poised to attack opponents with a balanced inside-outside game in which Fee will be a key part in the paint. Associate head coach Ana Wurtz was inducted to the Winona State Athletics Hall of Fame in October. Wurtz was a key component of the first NCAA Division II tournament team in 2008-09 and has been on the Winona State sideline since 2010, working her way up to her current associate head coaching role. This weekend, head coach Scott Ballard and his staff will look to replicate recent history in terms of season openers against non-NCAA Division II opponents. In 2019-20, Winona State beat both Saint Mary's University and Viterbo University to start season, downing the Cardinals 86-53 and earning a victory over the V-Hawks, 80-66.

Dakota State Notables:
Trojan head coach David Moe is heading into his fifth season with Dakota State. Jessi Giles is averaging 20.3 points per game; Savanna Walsdorf is the leading Trojan rebounder with 5.6 boards per outing. The Dakota State University Trojan women's basketball team owns a 4-3 overall record and is No. 13 in NAIA Women's Basketball Coaches' Preseason Top 25 rankings. DSU has played four games on the road, three at home to start the 2021-22 season. The Trojans went 1-1 record in the Cattle Classic last weekend, rolling past No. 25 ranked Taylor (Ind.) 102-76 on Nov. 5. DSU fell short to host-team No. 9 ranked Concordia (Neb.) 88-80 on the second day of the tournament on Nov. 6. Dakota State will also play Florida National who opened the season with a pair of setbacks to Ave Maria (Fla.) and Webber International (Fla.). The Conquistadors earned its first win against Warner (Fla.) on Nov. 6 and fell to St. Thomas (Fla.) on Nov. 9 After their weekend in La Crosse, Wis., Dakota State stays on the road for another weekend tournament, playing in the 2nd annual Dakota Clash. The tournament takes place at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse in Mayville, N.D. on Nov. 19-20.

Head coach Lionel Jones is in his third season with Viterbo University. Last season, the V-Hawks went 9-7 overall and 8-5 in conference play. Viterbo rolls out a 2021-22 roster with 20 student-athletes, with 16 hailing from Wisconsin. So far this year, Viterbo is 2-2 overall, having played three of their four games in Billings, Mont. The V-Hawks won their home opener on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 68-56 over Mount Mercy. Kacie Gross leads the V-Hawks in points per game with 9.0, while teammate Ellie Hoesly has hauled in 27 boards so far this season. In their most recent win, Kaitlyn Kennedy led Viterbo in points with 13, followed by Kacie Gross with 11 points. Ellie Hoesley was a force under the basket with ten rebounds. She also contributed four assists and four steals in the game. As a team, the V-Hawks shot 43.1 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from behind the arc. Viterbo out-rebounded Mount Mercy 37-29. The V-Hawks were strong from the free-throw line, shooting 78.6 percent (11-14 FTM).
