The Warrior faithful have become accustomed to the second half surge of points, as Winona has outscored their opponent in the second of every game in 2021. Against Wayne State, WSU will look to not need the bounce back and hope to start strongly against the Wildcats.

Now at 193-86, Tom Sawyer is 2nd nationally in total wins among active NCAA Division II coaches. Only West Chester's Bill Zwaan (200) currently has more victories.

Warriors work for win

Under Tom Sawyer, WSU has lost to UMary only once in seven tries. On Saturday, Winona State had to come from behind to make it 8-1 but WSU was able to maintain a particularly remarkable level of success against the Marauders.

WINONA STATE FOOTBALL Warrior Notables

Stepping into opportunity, Dominik London's 153 rushing yards against UMary was one of the top offensive performances around the NSIC last week. Injuries to starter Javian Roebuck and backup Ty Gavin opened the door for London, who took full advantage. Debut TD

Also pressed into service due to injuries in the backfield was Noah Carlson, who scored his first Winona State TD and had 45 yards rushing on the day.

Another strong day for Burke

Owen Burke continues to have the steady hand of leadership at the quarterback position. Against UMary, Burke was 16-of-28 for 286 yards and a touchdown. Improving protection

Against UMD in week three, Burke was sacked six times, an anomaly on the season. Burke was only sacked once in 28 passing attempts vs. the Marauders. Burke is the boss

Owen Burke has had only one interception in 116 passing attempts on the season, one of the best ratios in the NSIC.

Top 20 hands

Ethan Wittenburg is 11th in the NSIC in receiving yards (302), while Jake Balliu has the fourth longest reception in the league with a 65-yard effort. Wittenburg's 48yard catch is eighth-longest. Standing PAT perfections

Placekicker Jacob Scott continues to be perfect in NSIC play in PAT’s (17-for-17) and is 2nd in the NSIC in points scored by a kicker (35).

WINONA STATE FOOTBALL Record-setting day for Balliu

With 103 punt return yards against UMary, Jake Balliu became Winona State's alltime punt yardage leader. The senior sparkplug has 1,259 career punt return yards. Punting tree taking Root

UMD transfer Tristan Root has punted 13 times for 493 yards this season, with a longest effort of 53 yards. He has forced four fair catches and dropped four kicks in side the 20. Mitch mauls Marauders

Mitch Snitker had a big defensively for Winona State vs. UMary, grabbing an interception and making seven total tackles.

More than a passing grade

Winona State has accumulated 1050 passing yards so far this season and has racked up 587 yards on the ground as a team.

If you can be one thing, be efficient

Winona State's offensive efficiency mark of 148.7 per game is sixth best in the league so far this year.

Still on top

WSU's 91 yards accumulated on sacks is the most in the NSIC by any team defense. Still on top, too

Dominik London's 78-yard run for a touchdown against UMary is the longest rush from scrimmage so far this year in the NSIC.

WINONA STATE FOOTBALL Purple is the new red

Red zone success for Winona State is significant, with 15 scores on 18 attempts. The Warriors have 80 red zone points so far this season. Karaoke time: On the road again, just can't wait...

Playing UMary and Wayne State on the road in back-to-back weeks is the only two-week stretch in which WSU plays on the road twice in a row.

Keeping a handle on it

Winona State has excelled in ball-security losing only one fumble to date this season.

Things bubbled up in Bismarck

In the first three weeks of the season, WSU did not participate in a game that involved ejection(s). In week four vs. UMary, two players (one from each team) were ejected.

Sack races

Winona State has accumulated 91 yards on nine sacks this year, while conceding just 58 yards, also on nine sacks. Warrior discipline

Winona State averages just 51.75 yards in penalties each game, while opponents are penalized nearly 75 yards per contest. Block that kick

WSU opponents are a perfect 6-for-6 in field goal attempts against the Warriors this year.
