WBB: LAST TIME OUT WSU suffers setback at Minnesota Duluth
DULUTH, Minn. - The Winona State University women's basketball team took on the University of Minnesota Duluth in the final Warrior road game of 2023 on Saturday, Dec. 16. In the end, WSU saw UMD use a 21-point first quarter to establish a lead they would not relinquish on in Romano Gymnasium, dealing the Warriors a 65 - 37 defeat. Minnesota Duluth held Winona State to a shooting at a 26.9% clip in the game, with WSU connecting on just 5-of-20 attempts from beyond the arc. Playing in their seventh road game of the season, Winona State was held to 10 first-quarter points by Minnesota Duluth. WSU started strong, with Olivia Gamoke and Emma Carpenter scoring on back-to-back efforts around six minutes into the period. In contrast, UMD notched 21 points in the first frame, surging out to a commanding 11-point lead. Although WSU was able to significantly reduce the UMD offensive output in the second frame, holding the Bulldogs to 13 points, the Warriors struggled to get on track offensively as well, scoring just six points in the second 10 minutes of the contest. Ava Sergio, Vivica Bretton, and Lindsey Hahn led the Winona State offensive efforts to conclude the half. Winona State put forward their most balanced effort of the game in the third frame, holding UMD to a game-low 12 points, while scoring 10 points as a team. The Bulldogs ended the third quarter with a 46-26 advantage. Ava Sergio again tallied the first Warrior points of the frame, scoring a layup at the 7:58 mark. In the fourth quarter, UMD outscored WSU 19-11 to stymie any hopes of a Warrior comeback. Emma Kilpatrick and Paige Peaslee both found the score sheet with strong efforts off the Warrior bench. UMD took the contest by a 65-37 final scoreline. WSU Stat Standouts Olivia Gamoke 8 points, four rebounds Alex Dornfeld 8 rebounds Nine different Warriors scored in the contest Team Stats Comparables WSU was 4-of-9 at the foul line, while UMD was 7-of-8. Winona State was forced into 16 turnovers on the evening while claiming 13 steals from the Bulldogs. Overall, Minnesota Duluth hit for a 45.3% clip from the floor while holding WSU to a 26.9% shooting percentage. Beyond the Boxscore Winona State is 3-3 in their last six games and will face a Michigan Tech team next week that is 1-3 in their last four contests. The Bulldogs extended their winning streak over the Warriors to seven straight games with the win. Minnesota Duluth entered Saturday's contest ranked No. 22 in the country.
