The two teams were almost even in total kills - NSU 49, WSU 48 - and the Warrior defensive effort showed positively, collecting 61 total digs. However, NSU was credited with eight blocks, compared to five for the Warriors, and all six aces in the match went the way of the Wolves. Individually, Megan Flom led Winona State with 15 kills, while Madison Larson had 10 and Lydia Lange 7. Madison Rizner was tops in blocks for WSU with four, while Sidney Paulson and Flom found one each. Bre Maloney continued to excel in the assist department, handing out 42 helpers on the evening and added 11 digs for good measure. Becca Pagel led the squad in digs at 20, while Casey Volkmann had 12. A strong student section crowd welcomed the Warriors back to campus for their first contest in nearly two years and the Family Weekend festivities added to the interest. Over 400 fans made their way to McCown, and the atmosphere was a highlight of the evening. Winona State vs. MSU Moorhead

On Sunday, in front of family and friends in McCown Gymnasium, the #10 Winona State University volleyball team made short work of the Minnesota Moorhead Dragons, claiming their first NSIC victory with 3-0 (25-8, 25-14, 25-16) scoreline. The Warriors dominated all facets of the game, racking up 48 kills and five blocks en route to their sixth 3-0 win of the season so far. Overall, WSU delivered a .462 team hitting percentage, the highest mark of the 2021. WSU hit .354 vs. McKendree University at the Ferris State Invitational earlier this year; the last time Winona State eclipsed the .400 mark as a team was also against MSU-Moorhead, in a road match on Oct. 19, 2019. Individually, Bre Maloney dished out 38 assists and Becca Pagel collected 19 digs. Megan Flom had 17 kills, followed by Sidney Paulson and Madison Rizner with eight and seven, respectively. Lydia Lange had two blocks, as did Rizner and Flom. Over three hundred fans were in attendance, and WSU volleyball drew more than 700 to McCown Gymnasium, home of WNB Financial Court over the course of Family Weekend. With the win, the #10 Warriors move to 9-1 overall, 1-1 in NSIC play.

The Winona State University volleyball team kicked off their second weekend tournament of 2021 right where they left off - winning. The Warriors swept Ashland University 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-18) and Northern Michigan University 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-20), at the UIndy Invitational in Indianapolis on Friday, moving to 6-0 on season so far. With the wins, WSU advanced out of pod play as the top seed. Against Ashland, Bre Maloney dished out 41 assists on the day, the majority of which went to Megan Flom (15 kills), Madison Larson (9 kills) and Lydia Lange (7 kills). Kaleigh Beehler led the team with blocks (4), while Becca Pagel had ten digs and a pair of aces. The win in three sets saw the Warriors register a .320 hitting percentage against the Eagles. The second contest of the day brought a new opponent but the same result, with WSU out-dueling the Wildcats in all phases of the game. Cori Meyers contributed nine kills against NMU, as did Megan Flom. Flom also featured in five blocks, while Bre Maloney had 23 assists and Kami Knutson chipped in six helpers. As a team, WSU had three aces and forced NMU into a .152 team hitting mark. On day two, Winona State's 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-18) win over Missouri S & T was highlighted by Megan Flom, as the senior patrolled the net in non-stop fashion, picking up nine blocks in the match, a season-high so far. Flom also led WSU in kills (11), while Madison Larson and Sidney Paulson had seven apiece. Becca Pagel had 11 digs and Bre Maloney racked up 32 assists as the Warriors routed the Miners. Winona State racked up 13 blocks as a team, compared to just four by Missouri S & T, to win the defensive side of the net on the day. In the Warrior's fourth and final victory of the UIndy Invitational, WSU wore out the home team, 3-1 (20-25, 25-16, 2516, 25-18). Although WSU dropped its first set of the tournament to begin the match, they quickly rebounded and took control the rest of the way. Bre Maloney had an amazing match, producing 47 assists and collecting 11 digs, along with four kills. Megan Flom had 23 kills in the four sets, hitting an impressive .476. Madison Larson finished with nine kills and Madison Rizner had eight as well. Becca Pagel produced 24 digs to lead the team in that category, and Casey Volkmann contributed ten. For Winona State, the 8-0 early-season winning streak is one of the best starts to a Warrior season in the Joe Getzin era; WSU went 8-0 to open 2019 and 9-0 to start 2016. The current WSU high-water mark for consecutive wins to start a season is 12, set in 1987.

Competing in one of the toughest early-season tournaments available to NCAA Division II volleyball programs, the Winona State volleyball team was ready to dust off nearly two years of rust and prepare for the always tough Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) schedule. On opening day, WSU dispatched both Oklahoma Baptist and McKendree University in straight sets, claiming 3-0 wins to start the season. Against OBU - ranked #9 in the AVCA Division II preseason poll - the Warriors got the best of the Bison in a close contest. Winona State outlasted OBU 27-25 in set one and came out on top in sets two and three by 25-20 and 25-23 score lines. The Warrior win commemorated the first-ever meeting between the two programs. NSIC Preseason Player of the Year Megan Flom saw her 2021 season start well, racking up 12 kills against OBU, while teammates Madison Rizner (11) and Madison Larson (9) also were strong in attack for head coach Joe Getzin and his squad. Setter Bre Maloney dished out 42 assists in the match and had 10 digs for Winona State. In their second match on Friday, Winona State found the going somewhat more comfortable, earning set scores of 2513, 25-10, 25-13 over McKendree. Winona State has never lost to MU and extended their win streak to six straight over the Bearcats. In the nightcap against McKendree, Warriors Cori Meyers and Madison Larson combined to lead the team in kills with 11 each. Becca Pagel had 16 digs, while Meyers contributed 14 as well. Day two saw Winona State face yet another nationally ranked opponent in Hillsdale College, #13 in the AVCA preseason poll. WSU ran out to a 2-0 lead with 25-18 and 26-24 set scores, before dropping their first set of the year to the Chargers, 15-25. The downturn was short lived and behind the strong play of Megan Flom, Winona State closed out the match in set four 25-22. Against the Chargers, Flom had 16 kills and registered a .350 hitting percentage to lead the Warriors. Madison Larson and Sidney Paulson added eight kills apiece, and Madison Rizner had seven. Strong defense was the key to the WSU success, and four Warriors had double-digits in digs; Becca Pagel (17), Casey Volkman (17), Bre Maloney (15) and Cori Meyers (12). The Winona State success saw them head into the fourth and final match against host and also-unbeaten Ferris State. The Bulldogs had dispatched Tiffin University (3-0), Saint Leo (3-1) and the University of Missouri - St. Louis (3-0) earlier in the weekend en route to their unbeaten streak. The Warriors needed four sets to claim the 2021 Ferris State Invitational title, and the two teams provided the fans a back and forth affair. The two teams traded the first two sets, but Winona State pulled away in the third, outlasting a Ferris State rally to earn a 25-22 win. The fourth set finished 25-20 Warriors and completed the unbeaten tournament run. Individually against Ferris State, Sidney Paulson pounded the Bulldogs, racking up 23 kills, while also collecting three blocks and a pair of aces. Becca Pagel had 45 digs to lead her team. Bre Maloney handed out 41 helpers, while Megan Flom (15 kills / 4 blocks) and Madison Larson (7 kills) also featured strongly in the Winona State attack. In the end, Winona State extended their streak to four wins to start the 2021 campaign. The strong opening weekend marks the second successive season Winona State opened with a unbeaten tournament run, having gone 4-0 in 2019 at the University of Illinois - Springfield Invitational.

Led by Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Preseason Player of the Year Megan Flom, the Winona State University volleyball team looks set to turn some heads during the 2021 season. The Warriors garnered 169 points overall, including one first-place vote, finishing in a tie with Wayne State College for fifth place in the 2021 NSIC Preseason poll. According to head coaches around the league, the ultra-competitive NSIC volleyball season will likely be paced by 14-time regular season champion Concordia-St. Paul, as the Golden Bears accrued 11 of the 16 available first place nods. The Winona State 2021 campaign will provide the opportunity to showcase work accomplished in an extended off-season, and will look to build on their impressive 2019 season in which WSU and head coach Joe Getzin went 21-8 overall and 13-7 in NSIC play. Flom, a fifth-year senior from Kenyon-Wanamingo, Minn., earned 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-American honors earlier this summer, another award in a long list of accolades received by the 6'-2" outside hitter. In 2019, Flom set a program record with a .391 hitting percentage, the eighth-best mark nationally. She also led the Warriors with 358 kills. A veteran cast joins Flom in 2021, with fifth-year setter Bre Maloney likely tasked with running the Warrior offense. Maloney, a 2019 All-NSIC Second Team pick, was fifth overall in the NSIC in assists that year, racking up 10.74 helpers per match. Becca Pagel was also top-10 in the NSIC in digs, registering 465 in 106 sets played, good for a 4.39 avg. per set. Additionally, Madison Rizner joined Flom in the 2019 NSIC Top-20 list for hitting percentage, as the Richfield Center, Wis. senior turned in a .299 hitting percentage, the 16th-best mark in the league. The two-sport standout also earned NSIC mentions in track and field this past spring. On the sideline, veteran head coach Joe Getzin enters his seventh season with the Warriors and his 23rd season overall as a collegiate head coach. Joining Getzin on the sideline are Kristine Pelky, a former standout at the University of Sioux Falls and former Upper Iowa setter Malissa LeClaire.

Joe Getzin is entering his seventh season as the Winona State university volleyball head coach, and his 23rd season overall. The 2019 Winona State campaign saw Getzin lead his team to a 21-8 overall record and a 13-7 mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NISC) action. The Warriors advanced to the 2019 NSIC Tournament, eventually falling to Concordia - St. Paul, the eventual tournament champion. Following the 2019 season, Getzin saw Warrior standout Megan Flom earn American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American honors, one of just three WSU volleyball players ever named to the AVCA All-American list while compete in the NCAA ranks. Flom was also named to the 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-American team in volleyball, the first CoSIDA volleyball honoree in WSU history. In 2018, Getzin notched his 100th win at Winona State, becoming the fastest coach in program history to reach the milestone. The Warriors finished 13-15 (10-10 NSIC) with a young roster that notched three conference wins over teams ranked or receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25. It marked the fifth straight season under Getzin that WSU went at least .500 in the ultra-competitive NSIC – a feat that had not been accomplished in more than two consecutive years prior to his arrival. The Warriors posted their third-straight 20-win season in 2017, an accomplishment that had only been achieved over one over span in program history (1986-88). Winona State went 21-8 (15-5 NSIC) with an undefeated regular season road record. Despite being ranked within the AVCA Top 25 all year, the Warriors' hopes of reaching the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season was denied as Winona State fell just outside the regional bubble. Seniors McKenna Larsen and Danielle Rampart each earned AVCA All-American honorable mention nods. The 2016 campaign was historic for Winona State as the Warriors reached the NCAA Division II Regional for the first time in program history. WSU went 27-6 overall (the most wins since 1990) and 16-4 in the highly-competitive NSIC. Junior setter McKenna Larsen became the team's first-ever NCAA DII All-American, earning honorable mention recognition from the AVCA. In his second year the Warriors continued to show improvement, reaching the NSIC Championship game. The team won 20 matches in 2015, a feat which had not been accomplished since 1993, and were ranked 22nd in the final AVCA Poll. During the season the Warriors had four wins over top-ten ranked opponents on the year. Upon completing his first season, Getzin helped lead the Warriors to one of their most successful years in program history. The Warriors finished 2014 with a 19-8 record and a 14-6 record in NSIC play, finishing fifth in the conference. Getzin's .703 win percentage in his first season at WSU marks the second-best single season win percentage in program history since LaVonne Fiereck led WSU to a 28-10 (.737) record in 1990. Getzin also helped mold outside hitter Danielle Rampart into a great player in her first year in the program, helping her earn all-NSIC First Team accolades as well as earn AVCA Central Region Freshman of the Year honors. As a program, the Warriors have performed just as remarkably in the classroom under Getzin, having earned the AVCA Team Academic Award each year he has been head coach.

Megan Flom: NSIC Preseason Player of the Year

Winona State started their 2021 campaign having already turned some heads around the NSIC. League coaches voted Megan Flom, a senior from Kenyan-Wanamingo, Minn. the NSIC Preseason Player of the Year. In 2019, Flom set a program record with a .391 hitting percentage, which ranked eighth nationally. In conference play, Flom ranked third in NSIC hitting percentage (.443) and ninth in kills/set (3.81). Flom also led the Warriors in kills (358), was second in blocks (77), solo blocks (21), and block assists (56), and was third on the team in serving aces (20).

Flom earns 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-American honors

The senior from Kenyon, Minn., earned third team All-America honors with a 3.94 GPA as an Elementary Education major. Flom became the first Winona State volleyball CoSIDA Academic-All-America selection since Lauren Brown earned the award in 2009.
