She’s the horse that keeps her trainer upbeat, and soldiering on, at the most difficult stage of his life. Her name is Still A Star and on Saturday she’ll be out to show she’s still a star – in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes at Flemington. The five-year-old mare was nicknamed Minnie when she was a foal because she was so small but, as trainer Bill Ryan noted, she became the mouse that roared … a $13,000 purchase who has won nine races and $664,000. More importantly, though, Still A Star has given Ryan untold joy and motivation to keep fighting a terminal illness (lung disease). Daughter and fellow trainer Monica Ryan said this week their marvellous mare would be set for the Empire Rose Stakes at the Melbourne Cup carnival. “Still A Star is what keeps him (Bill) going and this is probably his last opportunity to do what he’s never done as a trainer – to win a Group 1 race,” said Monica. And speaking of Monica, the presentation of this photo will no doubt bring a smile to her face … according to Facebook she’s been hoping all year for a Winning Post cover shot of Minnie!
The NSW racing spotlight returns to Kembla Grange this weekend as the provincial circuit takes over from Rosehill to host The Run To The Rose, and two other Group 2 features. Joel Marshall’s best bet on a super program is Silent Impact in the Duclify Stakes.
