maintaining info in your brain over summer As summer approaches, many students at SRHS look forward to getting a good night’s sleep without the burden of homework and tests on their mind. But what happens when that dreaded time to go back to school comes, and half of the information you learned the previous year has slipped your mind? This article aims to combat the forgetfulness that summer brings - as well as keep you busy and entertained!

1. Take a college class College classes are often slightly more challenging compared to high school classes. They require you to apply knowledge from multiple subjects that you have learned in the past. They challenge you to think further and keep your brain sharp. These classes will give you insight into what classes will be like in the future as well. Additionally, you also get credit and experience for college classes.

1. Take part in summer programs related to your favorite subjects Summer programs related to your academic interests are challenging as well as engaging. They let you expand on what you already know and gain new information. As well as being a great review of your past school years, they are also great for college applications!

1) Review Review the textbooks and workbooks of your previous classes. This doesn't mean you have to thoroughly read through them and relearn the material! Sometimes, even skimming through sections and section titles can help. Review your notes and essays because they are more condensed and less time taking. Look over key concepts and explain them out loud. There are also plenty of online resources to help you! Find worksheets and online documents that will help you review the most important parts of the material.

2) Tutoring Teaching is the best way to learn. By engaging a student, you will automatically be reviewing the material. You will understand the subjects better and learn in depth. Tutoring will also teach you how to interact with others and explain your thoughts clearly.

3) Create a Project Researching and planning something you are interested in will help you review your skills. Try out a new science experiment, there are plenty of sources for inspiration on the internet! Maybe redesign your room, or reorganize your library. You can even choose projects that teach you a new skill, like how to cook.

There are plenty of ways to keep your brain sharp over summer. It is important to review information to make sure that we are prepared for the next school year!

using your passions to help your community Everyone has different passions, different activities that make them happy. Though executing your passions for yourself is enjoyable, it is more so when you are doing it for the benefit of others. Thus, this summer, with some time,, here are some ways you can use your passion to help others: 1) Find nonprofits/charities where you can use your passion.

Find a nonprofit where you can use your skills to help people. If you enjoy cooking or serving people, find a local homeless shelter to volunteer in. If you enjoy reading and books, talk to your local library and find if there are any volunteers. If you have art chops, see if there are any local nonprofits that need help with marketing or social media.

Local charities are always looking for people with passion.

2) Teach others about your passion.

One of the best parts about having a passion is being able to share it with others. You can start a class teaching kids in your community about coding if you are passionate about computer science. You can teach people in your community how to draw or paint. Classes can even be done online now through Zoom, a program in which everyone has become proficient in over the past couple of years. Perhaps by teaching

your passion, you will help someone else discover theirs.

3) Support other people pursuing your passion.

Another way to help your community using your passion is by supporting others who are pursuing it too. For example, if you are a fan of art, go to a local art show or fair and maybe buy a painting. If you are a musician, go listen to a concert put on by some members of your community. If you enjoy reading books, find a book club in your community. This way not only do you get to pursue your passion, but you also get to find people who enjoy doing the same things you do and support them too.

Test Prep Tips for Over the Summer Summer break means lots of free time, but many students may want to use all the extra time to work on test preparation for standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT. These tests can seem very scary and important, but tackling them by studying will make things much easier.

One way many people study for SAT/ACT standardized tests is by taking test prep classes. Popular test prep classes that many SRHS students take include classes by Hamilton Education, UCSD, Revolution Prep, and more. The advantage to these classes is that many provide a personalized tutoring experience based on what you specifically need to work on. They also provide many resources such as practice tests, and personal reading and math tutors. However, some of these test prep classes may not work for some students, as some can be expensive or students might not have the time to commit to a full course. Thankfully, there are many other, much more affordable, and flexible options that work. Many students recommend buying a test prep book, which provides tips and tricks for taking these tests, many practice problems, and full-length tests. Popular books include ones published by The Princeton Review, which costs less than $25 on Amazon.

There are also many free resources that can give you just as much practice as a prep course. Most schools, including SRHS, offer the PSAT, which is initially a practice SAT, usually given in the fall, which is free. This is a great way to take a test very similar to the SAT in an exam setting. Khan Academy has a very good SAT prep website which is free, and if you connect your PSAT score to the website, it creates personalized practice based on the skills that you personally need to work on. Khan Academy can also create a personal test practice itinerary that fits with your individual schedule. For the ACT, the official test website offers many free resources such as a guidebook, study guide, and many practice tests.

Whether you are willing to pay or not, there are many helpful resources that you can take advantage of to prepare for these tests over the summer. Good luck Falcons!

Why should you apply for an internship in the summer?

Summer is coming up shortly, and you are probably excited to hang out with friends, frolic in the sun, and not have to think about school until next August.

Incidentally, this is the perfect time to get an internship. But first, what even is an internship? Internships are introductory work opportunities that serve to build experience in professional career fields.

Sometimes they are paid, but usually, the compensation you get is through the experience of interacting with a professional workplace. Hopefully, when you’re done with this article you’ll begin to see summer internships in a new light.

Whether it’s taking care of animals or learning how to write computer programs, internships are a great way of immersing yourself in your future career. Although the work might sometimes be boring sweeping office floors and uploading data onto spreadsheets doesn’t sound like anyone’s idea of fun - doing so can open you to many advantages. According to CollegeVine, a blog designed to help high schoolers boost their chances of getting into college, internships “give you the opportunity to connect with the people who work there, learn about the day-today functioning of the worksite, and give you an idea of whether or not a career in

this field might be of interest to you.”

What’s more, internships can help you meet professionals in your desired career field who can help “secure college admission and job opportunities down the road,” according to Southern Utah University. But even if you can’t find an internship in your area of focus, it can still be a great way to build the characters and skills necessary to succeed in your career. Unlike college internships, “high school internships focus more on experience and learning than on obtaining full-time work”, according to U.S. News.

That means that even if an internship doesn’t fit your interest, you can still benefit from it in the long run.

Overall, summer internships offer a great opportunity to high school students, whether they are paid or not. Good luck to all the future interns!

The Importance of Community Service

Have you ever looked at a college’s website and seen that they show interest in students who dedicate their time towards benefitting the community?

Well, this usually means that they admit students who participate in community service. Now you may ask yourself, why is community service important? Well, that’s why I am here to help. Hi, my name is Aksha and today I'm going to explain why community service is not just beneficial towards the community but to yourself and the environment.

There are several different types of community service, including beach cleanups, food drives, volunteering with kids, and donating clothes to a homeless shelter. The definition of community service is voluntary work intended to help people in a particular area.

However, doing community service can also be super beneficial to you as well.

While you are helping others in your neighborhood, you are also showing your effort and commitment to the work you do for the community, which is something colleges love.

Based on the admission rates of most colleges, admission officers look for someone who displays leadership, determination, and interest in what they do. This is why it is important to choose an act of community service that you find interesting and fun. Here are some ideas of community service: Volunteering at a local library Spending time at a food drive

Participating in a clothing drive or donating clothes to Goodwill Volunteering at an animal shelter, a zoo, or a hospital Recycling programs or neighborhood cleanups Community gardening or tree planting Blood drive or any sort of health related event

These are just some examples of ways to show your true passion towards the community. A great way to get started is by joining a community service club, like CSF here at Scripps, or by getting involved with a group of friends. The most important part of community service is to make sure you have fun, and to make sure you are benefiting the community for the better. Many projects will allow the community to grow, become closer, and even become cleaner and safer.

So, community service is important for you to show dedication towards your passions, and to also help the communities around you to become stronger and more supported. Don’t forget to log community service hours and choose an event that will make you enjoy your time there. Most importantly, think about how you can help the community everyday through small acts. TIPS FOR EXPLORING YOUR PASSIONS With summer quickly approaching, students highly anticipate sleeping in, beach days, and being with friends and family. But with all this newfound free time, we might as well divert attention to exploring previously identified passions or even discovering some new ones. You get the best of both worlds in doing this- a fun AND productive summer.

It can be challenging to figure out what you love and even harder to parlay it into your life. Here is a helpful guide to pinpointing what you are passionate about and making it a viable way to better yourself, the community, or even make some money.

First and foremost, think back to your childhood!

Sounds kind of silly, right? But often, our most genuine passions emerge when we are young children. After all, little you was not burdened by the pressures of real life. So think about what you loved long before you had to worry about money, time, and the judgments of others.

Painting? Dancing? Helping people? Getting back in touch with your inner child’s instincts is essential in finding your passion.

Next, it’s vital to eliminate money from the equation. As we get older, it’s hard not to consider the financial aspects of our hobbies.

However, this restricts your ability to figure out what you REALLY want to be doing. If money were no object, what would you do? This is an important question to ask yourself in discovering what you are genuinely passionate about.

A great way of drumming up passions is considering any personal heroes or idols.

Following in the footsteps of someone you look up to is an excellent way of getting involved.

If you are really stumped, reach out. Nobody knows yourself better than you, although it can be tough to reflect on yourself. Talking to people you spend lots of time with is a great loophole.

Your friends and family may be able to think back to a time you dreamt of being an astronaut or ballerina when you completely forgot about that phase of your life. If this isn’t a feasible option, there are countless online resources such as personality tests, blogs, course catalogs, etc., that can help you recall things that interest you.

After discovering points of interest, focus on things that you enjoy and do well. Whether you bake a mean cake, are really good with children, or are crazy about working out. From here, reach out! Leverage social media and ask family and friends if they are or know people in the industry you are interested in. Our generation has a massive advantage with the internet. Simply looking up “ways to get involved with _____ this summer” will reap sooo many suggestions or even opportunities for jobs, internships, volunteering, etc. And you never know, maybe your parent’s friend is looking for a summer intern. It definitely doesn’t hurt to branch out.

Discovering what you’re passionate about is great, but it doesn’t offer much until you implement it into your life. Ultimately, you won’t really know what you love to do unless you actually give it a go. Until you just do it, it’s really just speculation. So, whether you take a small step like signing up for a class or diving head-first into a job, roll up your sleeves and do it. You’ll never know until you try.

Which is why we are so excited to bring you the second edition of the WING Magazine! This edition is a step-by-step guide on how to explore, discover, and amplify passion utilizing education.

Ever wondered how to apply for a summer internship? Study for the SAT/ACT over summer? And do it all while serving your community? We admit it, we don’t have all the answers, but we certainly have experiences and tips from falcons who’ve been through it before.
