Whenever someone hears the word “Punjabi wedding�, they obviously think of a noisy, booming and a big fat Indian wedding. Their wedding ceremony generally includes delicious food, fun and a lot & lot of dance. But apart from these extravagant things, there is more than this in a Punjabi wedding.

1. Roka and Thaka Roka is the first wedding ceremony for the couple. Roka is derived from the word rokna. That means now couples are not allowed to look for any other possibilities. Now they are a team. In the thaka ceremony, both the families of the bride and groom present gifts, sweets and gifts to the couple.

2. Chunni Ceremony In this ceremony, the family members of the groom went to the bride’s home and give her jewelry, gifts, sweets and saree or lehenga which must be red in color. The red color chunni of the outfit is placed over the head of the bride.

3. Engagement Engagement ceremony takes place on the same day of chunni ceremony. This ceremony is mostly a private function. In this ceremony, couples exchange rings and guests showers gifts or shagun to the bride & groom.

4. Mehendi Ceremony

In this ceremony, henna is applied on the bride’s hands and feet. Also, all the friends, guest and sisters of the bride apply henna on their hands and feet. This mehendi ceremony occurs at the brides and groom/s home.

5. Sangeet Ceremony Most of the time, sangeet ceremony occurs after the mehandi function.

This ceremony is full of dancing, singing, fun – games & activities.

6. Kangana Bandhna Ceremony Next day, this ceremony occurs in the morning time. The bride’s and groom’s hand is tied with a mouli in their own home. This mouli guard them against evil things.

7. Chhodha Chadana In this ceremony, all the family members sit together in a havan. The maternal uncle and aunty give a set of 21 bangles to the bride. The color of the bangles must be red and ivory. These bangles are purified in the milk along with some rose petals. After that, these bangles are hidden with white clothes so that the bride can not see the bangles. They consider it as bad luck.

8. Kalire Ceremony Just after the chhodha ceremony, kalire ceremony occurs. This ceremony signifies the healthy and happy conjugal life and fertility of the bride.

These kaleeras are then shaken on the head on unmarried girl. If the kaleera fall over her head, that means she will next to tie the knot.

9. Haldi Ceremony This ceremony takes place on the morning of the wedding day. This ceremony can happen separately or can happen together. Turmeric is mixed

with rosewater, sandalwood and mustard oil and applied on the bride’s and groom’s body.

10. Sehrabandi In this ceremony, pooja takes place in which the groom wore a turban and a sehra which covers the face.

11. Ghodi Sajana and Ghodi Chadhna Now the groom is made to sit on the godhi and arrives at the venue where the wedding commenced. The mare is decorated and fed some channa and shakkar.

12. Agwani and Milni Bride’s family greets the groom’s family with some gifts and sweets. After that, the bride's side meets the corresponding side of the groom’s side.

13. Varmala In this ceremony, couples exchanges the garlands with each other.

14. Kanyadaan In this ceremony, the father of the bride gives his daughter’s hand in the hands of her groom and asks him to treat her with love, care, attention, and respect!

15. Mangal Phere Post Kanyadaan, the couple has to circle around the sacred fire for seven times. After these end, the priest declares them married.

16. Sindoor Daan

Post the pheras, groom anoints the forehead of the bride with sindoor. This shows that they are married now and this bond will last for seven lifetimes.

17. Joota Chupai Bride's Sisters hide the groom’s shoes while they are busy in the wedding ceremonies. If the groom wants his shoes back, he has to give some cash to the bride’s sisters.

18. Vidaai This is the hardest goodbye from the bride to her family. A bittersweet moment of her family. The bride has to throw a handful of rice on her family members. After that, she sits in the car and leaves for her new home.
