Dear Friends!

It was a great pleasure to host the first Winelovers Wine Awards event. Although the team had previ ously organised five Winelovers 100 competitions, the international perspective also presented us with inspiration and challenges. I would like to thank my colleagues for their outstanding efforts, the jury members for their openness and professionalism, the hotel and sponsors for their support and, of course, all the winemakers who entered the competition and showed us their fabulous wines.

It was a remarkable experience, and we can’t wait for next year’s event. We will try to retain all its strengths and make any adjustments that could improve it in any way.

Winelovers Wine AwardsHistory and future

After six years of the wine selection process and four editions of „Winelovers 100 – 100 best Hungarian wines”, the contest and the 140-page publication of the results have become a reference point for the Hungarian market for wineries, buyers and consumers alike.

The time has come to open up to the world and expand the contest not only regarding wines entered but also the members of the jury and communication of the results. The objective of the competition is to connect the region with the world where winemakers, traders, experts and even consumers can meet.

The Winelovers Wine Awards aims to become the most influential wine competition in Central and East ern Europe (CEE) and be among the world’s leading contests. The location of the contest, Hungary, has always functioned as a gateway between East and West, and thanks to our winemaking traditions and values, we can proudly take a leading role and represent countries wishing to export to and import from the region.

The owner and CEO of the portfolio, István Tábor, is an economist, lawyer and a highly educated wine expert among others with the WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines qualification.

Wines entered in the Winelovers Wine Awards international wine contest can win the following awards:

95 points or above 90–94.99 points 87–89.99 points 84–86.99 points 82–83.99 points

Special prizes

Best of Country: if there are at least 10 samples from one country, the wine with the highest number of points and at least a gold medal will be awarded a special prize.

Best of Grape Variety: if at least 10 samples of a given variety are received, the wine with the highest score within the variety and at least a gold medal will receive a special prize.

Best of Indigenous Grape Variety: the wine made from either white or black grapes with the highest score among the autochthonous grape varieties entered in the competition.

Judging process

The samples are poured by the serving staff by wine category.

The samples are assessed in flights by the judges. A flight may contain up to 12 wines.

If the wine category has more than 12 samples, the organising committee will divide the wine category into several flights, preferably with equal numbers of samples.

The judging panels may only evaluate samples between 8 am and 1 pm on the judging days.

At the beginning of judging, the panels will taste a so-called calibration wine, as a trial evaluation. The panel chairs and the president of the wine competition will discuss the score to be given to the wine, so that the judges can begin the judging from the same assessment level.

The judging panels will only know the category and vintage of the wines they are poured. 6

Samples will be judged with maximum discretion, in silence and without influenc ing each other. The scores will be awarded according to the following 100-point scoring system:

After the evaluation of each flight, the panel members will hand in their signed evaluation sheets and the scores will be checked by the panel chair. If the differ ence between the scores for any wine is greater than 5 points, a re-tasting and re-evaluation of the sample may be requested.

If the panel chair finds the scoring satisfactory, he will order that the existing samples to be poured away and the next flight poured. The panel members will take a short break until the next flight is poured.

Halfway through judging, the president of the Wine Competition shall order a short break in tasting. 10

Recognized as a champagne specialist, Master of Wine Essi Avellan is the author of several wine books, including the Christie’s World Encyclopedia of Champagne and Sparkling Wine (co-authored with Tom Stevenson). Essi is a jury member at the Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships and Chair of the Champagne and Sparkling Wine panel at the International Wine and Spirits Competition. Eszencia is incomparable with any other wine, especially when we are talking about a 50 years old eszencia! Deep brown colour. Full of dried figs, raisin and plum, plum jam, fruit cake, coffe bean, lots of herbal notes. Deep and endless. Dense, thick wine with incredibly high acidity that makes it ageless. Nice matured style. Liquid miracle.

Very young, developing aszú character with full of fresh, yellow fruits like sweet apricot and nectarine. A modern aszú-style. High residual sugar makes it creamy, a bit syrupy with an endless sweetness. It is still too young now.

Deep gold wine. Floral, soapy, fresh and young aszú. Candied apricot, hay, dried wild flowers, stone fruits appear shortly on the nose. Beautiful balance in the rich texture, moderated acidity with some bitterness. More than age worthy wine.

Deep colour. Porcini mushroom, lots of forest honey, tea leaves, fig with a hint of bergamot, vanilla. High sugar content, but high acidity too. Concentration, citrus falvours, exciting complexity, layered wine with a supreme balance.

Pure Furmint at its best. Peach, apple, pear, orange peel, parfume and soapy aromas. Lots of sugar, long, really sweet szamorodni, but with clear fruitiness, vanilla, lovely dried fruits in the aftertaste. Still a really young wine.

Gold colour. Herbal, spicy aroma with dried orange, forest honey, toffee, parfume. Great freshness blended with classic Tokaj-flavours with apricot jam with some mushroom, dried fruits, bitter orange and chocolate. Az aszú wine with an amazing length.

Deep gold colour. Intensive smell with honey, apricot, tropical dried fruits, most of all figs. Well balanced flavours with an elegant structure, really nice length and uniquely fresh acidity from the mild vintage.

Very aromatic aszú thanks to the grape variety. Intensive, soapy aroma with mushroom, baked apricot, flowers, honey. Then tropical notes come with orange, creamy touch then an endless aftertaste. Nice balance, complexity, refreshing acidity in the finish.

Gold colour. Complex and deep aroma with apricot jam, dried apple, tea leaf, honey, figs and marmelade. Typical honey flavours of Hárslevelű on the palate. Creamy texture, high level of sugar, caramel, apricot jam and endless ripe fruits.

Probably the very first aszú wine of this estate from Tállya. Mushroom, white chocolate, and peach on the nose with a nice aged character. Soft peach on the palate too, with mushroom, fresh fruits, nice body, juicy texture and perfect balance.

Surprising intensity, fresh fruits tells its young age with mostly apricot. High concentration with an unexpected acidity and length from Zeusz. Quince, pear makes it irresistible among Tokaj wines too.

Extremely fresh and young style full of quince, pear, golden apple, musk and truffle on the nose. Light, fresh flavours with high level of sugar, but fine, wellbalanced details at the same time. It has something both from the modern and classic side of Tokaj.

Light amber colour. Quince, dried fruits, apple, dried flowers on the developing smell. Nice balance and well integrated oak on the palate with again quince, dried orange, fresh grape and elegant spiciness.

Furmint and Yellow Muscat. Lovely mixture of oak and fruits, apple blossoms, white flowers, spices. It is really sweet, but balanced by high acidity. Youthful apricot, tropical fruits, apple. Complex, layered, long aftertaste. Typical modern style Tokaj sweet wine.

Surprisingly aged and complex notes with old wood, cognac, nectarine and pineapple. Then it is super young and intensive on the palate with clear apricot and peach, endless finish. Unforgettable experience from Mád.

Orange colour. Intensive aromas. Nose suggests some kind of skin contact with black tea, orange blossom, grape. Dry or offdry palate, medium body and acidity, with tea leaf and marmelade in the finish.

Something special from Somló. Intensive smell with really nice and fresh fruitiness in it. Great texture with honeysuckle, incredible minerality, crispy citruses with a prominent alcohol content at the same time.

Clean, medium lemon-yellow colour. Citrus, honey, apple, tropical and herbal notes on the nose. Dry and rich wine with crispy acidity, moderate alcohol and some bitterness too. Concentrated and long savoury finish shows secondary notes as well.

Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon rosé. Deep, dark orange colour. Strawberry jam, cassis and oaky character. Rosehip, strawberry and barrelled on he palate too with higher alcohol in a funky, creamy rosé style.

Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah from a well appreciated producer in Szekszárd. Medium plus intensity of overripened cherry and blackberry, menthol, liquoirice and truffle. Coffee and chocholate appear in the aftertaste. Silky touch, but it has a high alcohol content with massive tannins thanks to extraction.

Ripe fruits, mostly blueberry, black cherry, nutmeg, vanilla and violet with a premium quality of oak. Completely dry on the palate, with medium plus acidity, high tannin and prominent alcohol content. Sour cherry, mint, pepper and vanilla provide together an outstanding quality.

Intensive botrytis and mushroom on the nose, then earthy, spicy aromas, but peach shortly appears too if you let it breathe. Lovely acidity, a fresh, vivid aszú wine with creamy apricot flavour ending in a refreshing finish.

Pale gold colour. Bready and nutty notes with positive oak, mandarin, acacia, honey. Dry wine with high acidity and vivid character. Fine oak, spices, elevated medium body. Nice mouthfeel, concentration and long finish. An elegant Furmint from Tarcal.

Furmint and Hárslevelű from a well known winery of Mád. Clean apricot, young, developing aromas with some botrytis and a touch of oak. Nice, balanced, rich taste with honey, marmelade and the unmistakable apricot of Tokaj wines.

Aged style, a bit old-school aszú wine with medium amber colour. Toasted marshmallow, dark honey, botrytis and walnut. On the palate it is full of dried apricot, orange, sweet honey and again nuts. Still some fresh acidity and plum jam make it youthful in the long aftertaste.

Medium gold aszú. Floral, honey, parfume, ginger, fresh stone fruit notes on the nose. Very unique character defined by safron, apricot and pear. Medium acidity and less influence from botrytis define its style.

Deep gold colour. Clean, floral nose with rose, honey, pear and peach. Quite neautral style thanks to the variety. Pleasant, fresh acidity, concentrated in pulpy fruity flavours. An elevated alcohol makes the finish off-dry.

A lovely Cabernet Sauvignon rosé. Medium intensity on the nose. Crispy, fresh wine with a nice, greenish Sauvignon vibe. Pleasant balance, not too long at all, but a really tasty rosé wine from the south western corner of Hungary.

Deep straw colour. Intensive in every detail. It has a concentrated, deep aroma with a nice ageing, pine needles, dried tropical fruits, dried flowers and some honey. Depth on the palate, almost jammy sweetness, long and deep sweet wine with still a nice freshness.

Nice medium gold colour. Linden flower, herbs, vanilla, quince fresh pineapple. On the palate we can feel marshmallow, again some vanilla, spices and much more on the sweet side with some honey flavour and citrus jam.

Clean, bright yellow colour. Moderate aromas with citrus, stone fruits, hay, nuts, mango. Elegant wine with some typical petrol, stone, pear and mango on the palate too. Nice acidity, citrus and clean, mineral aftertaste.

Aromas of sweet spices, smoke, jammy red fruits, rosehip and cherry. Soft texture, moderate freshness, ripe tannin. Full of elegance, complexity, fruitiness like cassis, plum, sweet spieces and leather. Then salty finish makes it really special.

A bit aged by now. Fully developed with coconut, dill, dark plum, black cherry on the nose. Strong oak and high tannins, but nice balance in the end. Coffee, blackberry, chocolate and leather make its long aftertaste special.

It opens slowly with light, floral notes. Fresh, vivid acidity and juicy, complex mouthfeel. Good balance between fruit and harsh acidity, but it is still a really young one.

Pale lemon-green colour. Reductive on the nose with herbs, citrus, lemon peel and mineral notes. Almost high acidity, but well-balanced, fresh and crispy wine with the obvious touch of the terroir.
