Napa’s legendary V. Sattui Winery is embracing a new chapter –and the experience for visitors is as inviting as ever.
The winery’s fabulously renovated marketplace, now called Mercato del Gusto, is fully open and ready to welcome guests. This vibrant new space invites visitors to explore an expanded selection of foods, wine pairings, and local specialties - all served with the warmth and hospitality that make V. Sattui a Napa Valley tradition. Enjoy tastings, picnics on the beautifully landscaped grounds, seasonal events, and family-friendly experiences that make every visit memorable.
The renovated space introduces exciting upgrades: sapele mahogany hardwood bars, wide oak plank floors, all-seated wine bar tastings with expanded food pairings, a 26-foot vertical refrigerated cheese wall, Italian deli and cheese cases, a central grab-and-go island, and a dramatic 20-foot-diameter circular wine bar with a hanging wrought-iron bottle chandelier. Additional improvements include a new roof clerestory to bring in natural light, refreshed outdoor patios, and a welcoming stone façade –soon to be complete with handmade entrance doors currently making their way from Central America (worth the wait, we promise!).
Picnics and outdoor gatherings remain central to the guest experience at V. Sattui, ensuring that the winery is welcoming to visitors of all backgrounds. The winery continues to prioritize accessibility, offering walk-ins, new wines by the glass, locally inspired pricing, and family-friendly amenities — demonstrating that Napa Valley hospitality can remain inclusive even during significant upgrades.
Coinciding with the winery’s 50th anniversary, the Mercato reopening celebrates five decades of winemaking excellence and community connection. Guests can now enjoy everything from curated cheese sampling to chocolate truffle and wine pairings, and seasonal tastings inside the fully completed Mercato del Gusto – a space that continues its legacy as both a beloved gathering place and a culinary destination for generations to come.
A major highlight for visitors is the newly launched Wines by the Glass in the Mercato Tasting Room. Curated alongside a Michelin-star Pairing Plate menu by Stefano Masanti, the offering combines approachable wine tastings with thoughtful culinary pairings. Stefano and his wife Raffaella, who run a Michelin-star restaurant in Italy, bring their expertise to Napa Valley for seven months of the year, creating culinary magic for V. Sattui’s group events and weddings.
Cheese and charcuterie selections, curated by cheesemonger James Ayers, feature nearly 300 cheeses and premium salumi, including specialties from the winery’s own salumeria. Seasonal deli offerings, fresh sandwiches, panini, pastas, salads, and house-made desserts complement the wines, creating a memorable sensory experience for every visitor.
V. Sattui Winery’s renovation proves that even as spaces evolve, hospitality and accessibility remain central. Guests can now enjoy the sights, tastes, and traditions of Napa Valley in a reimagined marketplace, building new memories on a foundation of five decades of craftsmanship, community, and celebration.

BY TANYA SEIBOLD
For well over a century Sebastopol/West Sonoma County has been known as “apple country”. Many of the original apple orchards were planted in the 1800s during the Russian fur traders’ journey down the coast. Our beloved heirloom apple variety, Gravenstein, is a treasured gift of that period and just so happens to be one of the preferred apples of cidermakers for creating small-batch craft ciders. The region’s cider traditions have (thankfully) been revived by passionate producers dedicated to crafting artisanal ciders in a full range from dry and tannic to fruity and effervescent.
Founded by Chris Condos and Suzanne Hagins in 2008 making organic wine, Horse & Plow was established with a commitment to sustainability and authenticity. In 2016, they started crafting small-batch ciders reflecting Sonoma County’s unique terroir, using organic ingredients and traditional techniques. Their ciders are fermented naturally with wild yeasts, allowing the fruit's intrinsic qualities to shine.
The Ciders: From crisp and dry to aromatic and slightly sweet, the ciders cater to a broad range of tastes with seasonal offerings and experimental blends. They bottle condition them for natural carbonation (like Champagnes are made) and there is no sugar left at the end of that process.
Founded in 2018 by Ned and Michelle Lawton, Ethic Ciders has quickly become a standout in Sonoma County’s cider community. Their commitment to regenerative agriculture and sustainability shapes every aspect of the orchard and every bottle they craft. The name Ethic embodies their dedication to responsible farming, environmental stewardship, and thoughtful business practices—values that shine through in each sip.
The Ciders: From crisp, dry classics to limited releases infused with local botanicals and fruit, Ethic’s lineup showcases both tradition and creativity. Most of their organic apples are grown in the home orchard or sourced from nearby dry-farmed orchards in Sebastopol.
Dry and rustic, with a nod to Old World cider traditions. The flavor profile is crisp, complex, and layered. Bright apple notes balanced by earthy undertones and a touch of tannic structure. Made from a blend of local, organic heirloom varieties. The wild-fermented native yeasts give it a slightly funky edge.
Tasting: $25 includes four delicious, dry ciders, all made from apples grown in Sebastopol. Outdoor setting with two acres of gardens, orchards, and shady oaks. Well-behaved, leashed dogs allowed. 1272 Gravenstein Hwy N, Sebastopol
A vibrant blend of local apples, blackberries, and raspberries, balancing bright apple acidity with the lush sweetness of summer berries.
Visitors can enjoy rotating flights of seasonal ciders on draft, join special harvest events, and explore orchard tours that highlight Ethic’s farming philosophy. Guests are welcome to bring along a small picnic to savor with their ciders in the orchard.

Dutton Estate Winery may be best known today for its exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but its story is deeply rooted in West Sonoma County’s apple-growing legacy. Founders Tracy and Joe Dutton both come from families with long agricultural histories in the region. Tracy’s lineage traces back to the 1920s, when her greatgrandparents began farming apples and raspberries at Kozlowski Farms in Forestville. On Joe’s side, the Dutton family began farming in Sonoma County in the late 1890s, and today, Dutton Ranch now encompasses 300 acres of

apples and more than 1,200 acres of wine grapes. In a nod to this rich heritage, Dutton Estate has crafted a vibrant, off-dry Hard Cider that celebrates the region’s apple legacy. Made from a blend of heirloom Gravenstein and Golden Delicious apples, the cider offers a crisp balance of tartness and sweetness. It’s available at the winery in convenient 24-packs of 16-ounce cans, bringing the Duttons’ agricultural past full circle and offering visitors a refreshing taste of Sonoma County’s fruitforward history.
A pioneer in Sonoma County cider, Tilted Shed is the O.G. cidery with all the quirky personality you’d expect from die-hard cider maker, Scott Heath, and his wife, Ellen Cavalli, the creative marketing guru behind the brand. Together, this duo have a lot of fun with the cider styles and labels and don’t take themselves too seriously. And they love cats; you’ll see them dotted throughout the cider collection and merchandise. But when it comes to their terroir-driven cider making, it's a serious business- a heartfelt mission, fueled by a deep passion to preserve Sonoma County’s rich apple-growing heritage, one carefully crafted cider at a time. If making cider wasn’t enough, the couple are currently restoring their 5.5-acre home orchard with over 200 rare apple trees through new plantings and propagations from cuttings.
The Ciders: Their line up appeals to both traditionalists and adventurer-seekers. Celebrated for their small-batch ciders, complex conferments, low-ABV shrub spritzes, and nonalcoholic ciders. Look for their Pommeau, Pet-Nats, and Blackberry, Quince, & Plum co-ferments.
Continued, page 28
A tribute to forgotten apple varieties, this cider features bright acidity, earthy undertones, and a dry finish.
Tastings: Tilted Shed’s tasting space reflects a welcoming and unpretentious vibe. $10/person, per flight. Indoor and outdoor seating, and wellbehaved little ones (kids or dogs) are invited. No food service but you can bring your own snacks). No reservations necessary. Stop in for limited-edition ciders which are only available at the cidery.

From wine to now full-time cider maker at his warehouse in Petaluma, owner Trevor Zebulon found his passion for craft cider after purchasing a property with over 50 apple and pear trees. The name is inspired by the iconic coastal landmark at Goat Rock and his growing collection of small-batch, seasonal ciders.
Goat Rock also offers seasonal cider making classes on select Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays in October and November from 9:30am-3:30pm. The $65/person fee includes picnic lunch, hard cider tasting, and some freshly pressed organic apple juice to take home and ferment. goatrockcider.com/cidermaking-classes.
The Ciders: Using spontaneous fermentation and wild yeasts, Goat Rock’s ciders develop complex flavors showcasing the heritage of the heirloom and ciderspecific apples. From dry, crisp, and balanced mainstay blends and special oak barrel-aged bottlings, to seasonal, limited-releases like Rosé Cider (apples fermented with passionfruit) and Perry (pear cider), there’s a cider for every palate.
Whether you are new to ciders or an experienced imbiber, tasting and learning about craft ciders just got a whole lot more fun at Pomme. Proprietors Jessica OlsonEaly and Rick Tranchina opened Sonoma County’s only cider tap room and bottle shop just steps off the historic Sonoma Plaza in 2022 with an impressive 18 taps and over 150 different bottled/canned ciders from the west coast and across the globe.
Rick and Jessica pride themselves on featuring many small, local producers to support these micro cideries. Each bottle is methodically taste-tested by them to ensure it meets their criteria of being a memorable cider–one that’s interesting on the palate, made well with high quality juice, and is true to its “style”. From crisp and bone-dry, to funky Basque and farmhouse ciders, to elegant, finely carbonated fresh styles more akin to a fine white wine, there’s a wide range in cidermaking…and Pomme has them all.
But that’s not all! Pomme Cider Shop also has a great selection of non-alcoholic cider and wine, as well as other cool mocktail-inspired drinks, (but not cocktails) plus a small and mighty selection of sake, vermouth, and pommeau.
Tasting: Tasting is casual and held right at the source in his production warehouse. Whatever is open, you can taste and buy. Use the online form to book: goatrockcider.com/contact 1364 N McDowell Blvd, Petaluma
Ealy and Rick love a good time. Think happy hour, tasting room takeovers, Sunday pop-ups, Cider + Dinner Series, and dope beats every day.
Awarded Excellence in Cider Hospitality by the American Cider Association in 2025

The conductor’s cry of “All agourd!” signaled that this ride would be a lot of fun, and after two short toots on the horn, the train was off on its journey through the Mendocino redwoods to the highly anticipated destination: The Pumpkin Patch. Passengers nibbled on seasonal snacks and sipped warm cider (alcoholic options for adults) while the train climbed the steep east face of the Coastal Mountain Range. The little Pumpkin Express chugged along through Douglas Fir and Coastal Redwood forests, eventually passing through Tunnel #2 before descending into the redwood-thick Noyo River Canyon.
The historic Skunk Train has been on the rails through the Mendocino County redwoods since 1885, and it is busy yearround with other seasonal trips like the Mr. Skunk and the GIANT Christmas Tree Train and the Mushroom and Whisky Train. But there’s no better way to get in the mood for fall than to climb aboard the Pumpkin Express to pick a bright-orange pumpkin from a special patch located deep in the forest. The 1915 Skunk Train Depot, adorned with seasonal decorations, lavishes guests with Halloween spirit from October 1 to October 31.
It was recently named #5 on USA TODAY’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Scenic Train Ride. One reason may be that there’s something for everyone on the Sunk Train’s Pumpkin Express. Nature lovers will be in heaven in the thick of the protected natural forests, and children will love the adventure. Anyone who enjoys celebrating holiday traditions can soak up the spirit of the pumpkin patch, nature’s fall colors and apple cider.
The round-trip experience is 16 miles, two hours long and leaves from the Willits depot off Hwy 101. Every ticket holder gets a pumpkin of their choice plus special activities for kids.
Other optional add-ons to make the trip even more memorable include a ride in the conductor’s cab for those over 18 and VIP tickets, which include advanced boarding, priority concessions, a picnic lunch, and a commemorative gift. Feel free to ride the Pumpkin Express in your Halloween costume. It’s not just allowed; it’s encouraged!
Don’t wait! – Trips and tickets (and pumpkins!) are limited. So, grab your camera and jump on the Pumpkin Express for a fall adventure you will enjoy. Adult beverages available.
Experience is two hours and a pumpkin. Friday through Sunday and Wednesdays in October. Multiple times during the day.

On January 22nd, the serenity of the famed Sonoma Plaza was shattered by a late-night explosion of an underground transfer switch located directly in front of one of the Plaza’s most treasured tasting rooms. Corner 103, a stylish and inviting wine venue sustained major damage. It’s taken six months to rebuild and restore the site.
Once again visitors and locals alike can enjoy the outstanding wines that Corner 103 has been serving for nearly ten years. Corner 103 takes pride in providing an “approachable” tasting experience for those just discovering the bounty of Sonoma County vineyards, as well as a curated tasting for wine connoisseurs.
The space has been refreshed, with subtle updates that honor the original charm while adding a renewed sense of energy. A tasting experience at Corner 103 is never a rushed affair. Visitors are encouraged to allow at least an hour for the seated tasting. While you take in a near panoramic view of the picturesque Sonoma Plaza, your gracious and knowledgeable hosts, Brent Johnson and Lloyd Davis will guide you through six of their award-winning wines.
It’s no surprise that Corner 103 has been named Best Wine Tasting Room in America for two years in a row by USA Today and Trip Advisor. The warm, inviting atmosphere and the hospitality of the dedicated
staff provides one of the most memorable tasting experiences in the area.
To fully savor the complexity and elegance of Corner 103’s luscious wines, opt for one of the two available pairing experiences. A wine and cheese pairing allows you to first try one of the gourmet cheese offerings before tasting the accompanying wine, then a second time after a sip of the wine. Guests discover how wine both enhances and subtly alters the taste of food. A second option is an opulent array of carefully selected small plates that include cured meats, locally produced cheeses and other taste sensations.
Best of all, Corner 103 commitment to providing visitors with an approachable tasting experience means that their tasting and pairing options are some of the most reasonably priced in the industry, with a tasting of five wines priced at a mere $30 per person.
The addition of the pairings adds only $15 for the cheese option or $30 for a selection of six small plates offerings with six wines.
For Corner 103, reopening isn’t just about resuming operations — it’s a celebration of community, perseverance, and the joy of sharing great wine. Whether longtime patrons or first-time visitors, all are invited to raise a glass to new beginnings and the enduring spirit of Corner 103.

Lake County is a fairly young county, even by California standards. Carved out of Mendocino and Napa counties in 1861, Lake County was formed around just that, its lake. With Nevada sharing Tahoe, the Salton Sea created from floods and the lake drained by farmers, Clear Lake is the largest body of water fully within California.
Formed millions of years ago when a landslide dammed westward flowing Cold Creek and the volcanic valley filled with water, eventually finding an outflow with Cache Creek flowing into the Sacramento River. Between the largest active volcano, Mount Konocti, and the deep freshwater lake, it is a natural that Lake County is a fertile agricultural area and, while grapes had an early popularity and wines made in Lake County considered some of the best in North America, Prohibition destroyed the industry. Most vineyards were torn up and planted to other crops, like pears, which remain a symbol of the county even today and pear sparkling wine is produced honoring both agricultural successes.
In the meantime, early interest in the Lake County area was in its hot springs. A favorite among the wealthy as well as the weak, hot springs were considered curative for just about any ill as well as socially desirable. At the turn of the twentieth century, elaborate and rustic resorts dotted the hills around the lake and the County’s future seemed to hold an elegant and productive future.
The 1906, San Francisco earthquake disrupted the hot springs havens when the moving land seems to have weakened and slowed the formerly healthy springs, forcing many of the resorts out of business and the wine and resort focus now shifted to pears and lake living.
Traces of Lake County’s early glamour remain in Langtry Farms Vineyard & Winery’s name that bears an early stage and screen
star’s name, Lilly Langtry, and resorts are opening again, although they may have new areas of focus, wellness and appreciating nature are still key. Six Sigma WInery and their partnership with Huttopia Wine Country glamping is a great example and Mandala Springs Wellness Retreat Center has refined cabins as well as campsites for families and couples alike. The stars are truly out of this world making Lake County a natural stargazing destination; one of the hottest current trends in tourism.
Wineries here are well positioned to embrace the future with lower land costs and a commitment to sustainability that tracks with the global needs of a changing climate. The largest winegrower and vintner, Shannon Family of Wines, led by Clay Shannon, is also trendsetter in the field of regenerative agriculture and has long used sheep to trim and fertilize his vast vineyards. Shannon now looks to different varieties and winemaking styles while still preserving traces of early Lake County history like the oldest recorded Carmenere vine nicknamed the Mother Vine.
From nine AVAs and more than twenty bonded wineries, look at Lake County and responsible growers dedicated to the land to expand both the footprint of Lake County viticulture and its position on the world wine stage.
If wine country brings to mind the bounty of California farms and the largess of the Pacific Ocean, you will not be disappointed as you dine at restaurants in Napa and Sonoma counties. It is here you will find the very best in local produce, top qulity meats, fresh seafood and of course, a seemingly endless variety of ways to imbibe – from local wine to craft beer to artisan cocktails. Whether living locally or visiting from out of town, those dining in Wine Country have an insatiable appetite for good food and drink, and expect nothing less than the greatness from this impressive list of restaurants.
