Founded in 1982, Etude Winery has been dedicated to crafting world-class Pinot Noir that reflects the delicate nuances of its terroir. Etude believes that great wine is grown, not made — a philosophy that drives its meticulous vineyard practices. Their Grace Benoist Ranch estate is home to a remarkable diversity of grape clones, each selected to produce wines with complexity and depth. Guests at Etude have the opportunity to taste Pinot Noir from multiple growing regions, from Carneros to Oregon, and the profound impact the terroir has on this elegant varietal.
The winery’s commitment to quality extends beyond its vineyards. The winemaking team, led by renowned winemaker Jon Priest, employs traditional techniques combined with modern innovation to craft wines that are expressive, balanced, and age-worthy. Smalllot fermentation, gentle handling, and careful barrel aging all contribute to wines that truly reflect the characteristics of their origin.
Beyond its exceptional wines, Etude Winery is a leader in sustainability. With a commitment to preserving the biodiversity of Carneros, two-thirds of Grace Benoist Ranch remains untouched, allowing wetlands and woodlands to thrive. Regenerative farming techniques — such as composting, cover cropping, and low- and no-till farming — foster a healthy ecosystem, reducing the need for chemical interventions and promoting soil vitality.
Etude also takes an innovative approach to energy and water conservation. Since 2024, the winery has been powered by 100% renewable electricity, with an on-site solar array supplying nearly all of its energy needs.
Efficient water use is a priority, with precision irrigation in the vineyards and the use of locally recycled water at the winery. Their dedication to environmental stewardship earned them the prestigious 2023 California Green Medal Leader Award, a testament to their ongoing efforts in sustainability.
A visit to Etude is more than just a tasting — it’s an immersion into the artistry of winemaking. Guests can tour the picturesque vineyards, learn about the winery’s sustainability initiatives, and savor expertly crafted Pinot Noir in an inviting, scenic setting. The knowledgeable staff is eager to share their passion, whether discussing clonal diversity, sustainable farming, or guiding guests through a tasting flight that captures the essence of Etude’s commitment to excellence.
Etude offers a range of tasting experiences, from intimate seated tastings to in-depth explorations of Pinot Noir’s diverse expressions. Guests can compare different vineyard sites and vintages, gaining a deeper appreciation for the impact of terroir and winemaking techniques. Special winery events and exclusive club member tastings provide even more opportunities to engage with the Etude legacy.
For those who appreciate fine wine and responsible stewardship of the land, Etude Winery offers an unforgettable experience. Book a tasting today and discover why Etude is one of Napa Valley’s premier Pinot Noir producers.

For cycling enthusiasts and for wine enthusiasts, it’s an idyllic vision, hopping onto a tuned bike and pedaling down a pristinely paved, car-free corridor while admiring the beautiful outdoors. Meandering lazily through pictureperfect scenic vineyard countryside with a few fun stops along the route, makes for one of the more memorable and unexpected experiences in Napa Valley. Whether cycling for scenery or cycling for sips, Napa Valley Bike Tours has curated a menu of easy, fun, and vibrant treks throughout Napa Valley.
Established in 1987, after owner, Brad Dropping, fell in love with Napa Valley during a visit, Napa Valley Bike Tours has, through the decades, expanded, evolved, and diversified its offerings, creating resonant and customized experiences for its patrons. For those who prefer to explore and trek unassisted, simple bike and equipment rentals from NVBT are a perfect solution, with an excellent selection of traditional bikes and a large inventory of e-bikes at any of three NVBT locations, including the newest outpost located directly on the grounds of the iconic Charles Krug Winery in St. Helena.
This newly opened location was born out of mutual passion for providing guests with turnkey opportunities to

explore Napa Valley. Taking advantage of the convenience that came with a newly opened segment of the Napa Valley Vine Trail, which passes directly alongside the main entrance to Krug, Riana Mondavi, third-generation family member and owner of the historic winery, partnered with Dropping to give guests even easier access to get out and pedal the bike path.
The team at NVBT has long-offered customized public or private tours with stops at selected wineries that can include wine tasting and picnics. Hence, the new NVBT location at Charles Krug was a natural collaboration. From this point, cyclists may easily access the newest segment of the Napa Valley Vine Trail, which extends eight miles north to Calistoga, passing more than 25 wineries along the way including Castello Di Amorosa and Sterling Vineyards as well as Bale-Grist Mill Historic State Park and Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, where a tiny little gift shop sells ice cream treats, making for a perfect cycling break on a warm day.
Adding to the comfort and convenience of seeing Napa Valley via bike, NVBT offers a bike relocation service to facilitate point-to-point rides between its three locations. For example, cyclists may start a

ride in Downtown Napa and finish the ride nine miles north in Yountville, with no need to cycle back. And, with any of the guided bike tour and tasting packages, van-support makes it easy to purchase wines without hassling with wine transport.
What makes touring Napa Valley on bike stand apart from other typical sightseeing tours? Several things, in fact, including a genuine sense of community. The privilege of a true biking-through-vineyards experience is a direct reflection of the commitment and cooperation of 15 private landowners who granted easements, allowing for the Napa Valley Vine Trail to pave its winding route through private vineyard parcels.
NVBT tour guides, locals themselves, are not only skilled cyclists but are also passionate ambassadors of Napa Valley, offering insider tips and sharing the history of the place. Rides are not solely about getting from one spot to the next but rather are about sharing stories of history, landscape, and culture. And, the sense of presence in the moment is truly a part of the experience. Unlike touring via a vehicle, cyclists are almost “forced” to engage, figuratively and literally, putting down phones, holding onto handlebars, and being present using all five senses.
Whether seasoned cyclist or budding novice, NVBT offers experiences customized to fit pace and place, from public to private and from self-guided, self-paced to fully guided, curated experiences, making all cycling adventures fun. Touring through Napa Valley on bicycle is one of those rare experiences, offering a perfect blend of sport, culture, food, and wine and, most importantly, fun.

* ICONIC: A person or thing widely admired, having influence in a specific sphere, serving as a symbol of something important.
BY DON SONDERLING
The story of Alexander Valley Vineyards (also known as AVV) is iconic. It is a story of vision, a pioneering spirit, dedication, experimentation, and passion. It is the story of Harry and Maggie Wetzel, who purchased property in Alexander Valley in 1962. Their young children grew up among the vines, especially their son Hank, who knew early on that he had a calling to the earth and its bounty. Hank’s parents purchased the land in 1962, but AVV’s present story began in 1975, when the winery was built, and is now celebrating its 50th anniversary of producing award-winning wines, being innovators, leaders, and always continuing to look toward the future.
There is a commitment to sustainability… “Sustainable agriculture to me is taking care of the land and keeping it in its pristine state.”
– Hank Wetzel
Sustainable practices and reducing the carbon footprint are a focus.
The second and third generations are actively involved with winery operations, while the fourth generation is growing up “among the vines.”
Looking back to when Harry and Maggie purchased what was then agricultural property, it was a precursor to Hank’s eventual wine-growing vision. Harry recognized this area from his worldwide travels as one that could produce worldclass wine grapes, and he lost no time, planting vineyards in 1963 – there were fewer than a handful of grape growers then. Still, Harry had a vision, and by 1966, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Chenin Blanc, in addition to other varieties, were being planted.
Hank, from childhood, was instantly enthralled by the vineyards. No matter what the task was, he was involved, literally from the ground up, working, learning by constant on-the-job training. No one told or asked him to be so involved, it was just

part of who he was becoming. There was never a thought of “what do I want to be when I grow up,” for Hank, he knew. He inherited his parents’ work ethic and couldn’t be kept out of the vineyard. Over the years, Hank has held almost every position at the winery.
Hank went on to college, graduating from the University of California at Davis with a BS in Fermentation Science in 1974 while working summers at various wineries (including Freemark Abbey and Hanzell).
For his senior project at UCD, Hank undertook a challenging endeavor, developing plans for a small winery that would become AVV. Following graduation, this was Hank’s focus. Hank built and supervised every aspect of what would become Alexander Valley Vineyards Winery, completing this in time for AVV’s first crush in 1975.
The winery was built, and wines were sold, one bottle at a time, personally by Hank and his wife, Linda, who have established relationships in every state and many countries where AVV wines were sold then, and are sold now, which 50 years ago was “tomorrow.”
AVV occupies a special place in the history of Sonoma County wine growing, as does Hank Wetzel, recently honored by the Sonoma County Vintners as their 2025 “Sonoma County Icon.”
Hank Wetzel spearheaded forming the Alexander Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1984. He also served as past President of the Wine Institute, Sonoma County Winegrowers, and Russian River Wine Road.
So much has changed, yet remained the same since Hank’s parents first purchased a plot of land in Alexander Valley. A visit to this historic property blends history, vision, and award-winning wines into an extraordinary experience.
Due to the unique terroir and microclimates, AVV produces quality Bordeaux, Rhône, and Burgundian grapes, plus other select varieties. However, they are best known for their Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
Set aside time for a tour to experience the passion that makes AVV and the Wetzel Family the embodiment of what commitment, family, and vision look like. They truly represent the best of wine country, the best of Sonoma, and the Alexander Valley AVA.
Happy 50th Anniversary, and congratulations to Hank Wetzel on his recent honor. He is a true icon and role model for future generations.

Kendall-Jackson launched a brand-new wine in their portfolio: 2024 Vintner’s Reserve Chenin Blanc. This fresh addition to K-J’s Vintner’s Reserve Collection comes just in time for spring and summer. Sourced from three California growing regions – Clarksburg County, Monterey County, and Sonoma County – this wine is refreshingly juicy, with notes of green apple, pear, and honeysuckle on the nose, and florals, grapefruit, melon and pineapple on the palate.

Louis M Martini Winery, a founder of Napa Valley Wine Library, will host the library’s 61st Annual Grand Tasting in its stunning Martini Park on Sunday, May 18. This beloved annual tasting, the first winetasting open to the public in Napa Valley, continues a long tradition of showcasing the heart and spirit of the wines of Napa Valley while celebrating the region’s living wine history.
In the 1960s and 70s Napa Valley Wine Library gave wine education classes taught by food and wine pioneers Ric Forman, Joe Heitz, MFK Fisher, and Louis P (the son of Louis M) Martini. The Annual Grand Tasting was put together in support of those classes and to establish a still-growing collection of wine–related books, labels, interviews, essays, and images for everyone’s use at Saint Helena Public Library in its Wine
Library Wing and California Room.
On Sunday, May 18, 50 distinguished Napa Valley wineries will pour current releases and exclusive library wines, offering guests a rare chance to taste with the vintners and winemakers themselves. La Saison Napa is catering the event with its spectacular seasonal fare to complement the 100+ wines to be poured. A Silent Auction of 25 lots of magnums, tours and unique tasting experiences further supports the Napa Valley Wine Library Collection and wine education programs throughout the year.
By attending this remarkable event, guests join a community of wine enthusiasts and professionals dedicated to preserving and celebrating the legacy of Napa Valley winemaking. napawinelibrary.com

This summer, the magic of Broadway will once again illuminate Sonoma’s night sky as Broadway Under the Stars returns to the Field of Dreams just blocks away from the Sonoma Plaza.
Presented by Transcendence Theatre Company (TTC), the season’s productions have become one of Wine Country’s most anticipated cultural experiences. With a stunning outdoor venue just minutes from the Sonoma Plaza, gourmet picnicking, and excellent lineup of performances, the 2025 season promises to be a theatrical spectacle.
This year’s series kicks off on June 12 with Broadway’s Best Night Ever, a dazzling, all-new production celebrating the greatest hits of musical theater. Following this high-energy opener, audiences will be treated to Beautiful – The Carole King Musical in August, starring Broadway’s own Sarah Bockel in the lead role. Closing out the season in September is Ladies of Broadway, an empowering tribute to the legendary women of musical theater.
“Our 2025 season highlights the resilience and creativity of live theater,” said Tony Gonzalez, Artistic Director. “With a diverse lineup of performances, we celebrate Broadway’s legacy while embracing the spirit of Sonoma. We look forward to welcoming audiences for a season of memorable storytelling and outstanding performances.”
On performance days, the magic begins before the curtain rises at the pre-show picnic. Starting at 5 p.m., all ticket holders are invited to an exclusive pre-show picnic on the picturesque Field of Dreams lawn. This unique Sonoma-style picnic festival experience offers guests the chance to enjoy local food, wine, special cocktails, and live music, while meeting cast members and connecting with fellow theater enthusiasts. Special themed nights, including Pride Night, Latine Heritage Night, and ASL-Interpreted performances, ensure fun, inclusivity and accessibility for all attendees.
“At Transcendence Theatre Company, the pre-show picnic is an essential part of the Broadway Under the Stars experience,” says Amy Miller, TTC Creative Vision Director. “It’s where the magic begins — guests arrive early to enjoy Sonoma’s finest wines, specialty cocktails, delicious local food, and live music on our beautiful Field of Dreams lawn, all while taking in breathtaking sunset views. It’s a chance for friends and families to connect, relax, and get into the Broadway spirit before the show.”
The 14th season of Broadway
Under the Stars will feature three productions at the Field of Dreams theater venue, one block from Historic Sonoma Plaza:
Broadway’s Best Night Ever (June 12-15 & June 19-22)
This will be the debut of a new, original show created by Transcendence Theatre Company. Broadway’s Best Night Ever is an inspirational extravaganza featuring song and dance from the greatest hits of musical theater, showcasing music from over 40 Broadway shows with the finest talent from Broadway.
(August 7-10 & August 14-17)
The Tony® and Grammy® Awardwinning musical about Carole King’s early life and career comes to Sonoma this summer. The production will star Sarah Bockel, who played Carole King on Broadway and across North America.
“Bringing ‘Beautiful – The Carole King Musical’ to Sonoma is a rare opportunity to experience a Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical right here in Wine Country. Carole King’s music has touched generations, and with Broadway’s Sarah Bockel starring, this will be a memorable performance,” says Amy Miller, TTC Creative Vision Director.
(September 4-7 & September 11-14)
This original TTC production celebrates the influential women of musical theater. First created for TTC in Spring 2018, the show returns in a refreshed version, highlighting the women’s triumphs, challenges, and lasting impact on Broadway. This is the first show in TTC’s history to make its return to the TTC stage.
Tickets are on sale now, with early bird pricing available until May 6. To learn more and reserve your spot under the stars, visit transcendencetheatre.org.
Additionally, a portion of every ticket sold supports the Field of Dreams and local youth arts programs, reinforcing TTC’s commitment to giving back to the community. Over the past 14 seasons, the company has raised over $800,000 for nonprofit organizations and brought the magic of live theater to more than 350,000 guests.

Many wineries have bocce courts for their visitors’ enjoyment. Becase the game is played between two players or two teams of one, two, or four, it lends itself well to hanging out with friends at the winery as part of your total winery adventure. Be sure to check ahead. Some courts require reservations and/or fees. If you have your own balls, Veterans’ Park in Yountville or Crane Park in St. Helena have bocce courts available when leagues are not in play.

BY BARBARA BARIELLE
Now that it’s spring and rapidly heading toward summer, Lake County could be your next escape from the everyday.
Known for its gorgeous Clear Lake and adorable small villages, once you get there, it is best to spend some time, maybe a couple days.
Wineries abound without the Napa crowds … and prices. Check out Six Sigma Ranch and Winery and their Stage Coach Stop tasting room – a cozy cabin that was once a true stagecoach stop. Not only is the Six Sigma Ranch traversed by hiking and mountain biking trails, but they have both picnic areas and a spot for “ranch stays” if you bring your RV or trailer.
But, knocking it out of the park is the cutting edge Huttopia glamping park at Six Sigma. Based on a European concept and built around a pool and cafe for a full resort experience, Huttopia is so popular, it is expanding this year to accommodate even more vacationers who drink wine.
Another popular wine stop is The Mercantile by Shannon Ranch in Kelseyville. Longtime growers and winemakers in Lake County, the Shannons introduced The Mercantile concept as a place to sample their wines, listen to live music, purchase food and goodies while also enjoying an array of food offerings from popular food trucks. This place is happening!
Other popular wine stops include Langtry Farms , started by a silent film star named Lily Langtry, Fults Family Vineyards where a 4x4 takes you high up into the vineyards to sample gorgeous wines with a view to match. Wild Diamond Wines in Hidden Valley Lake touts crafting “premium wines with a touch of wild” in the natural and organic winemaking.
Down the road from Wild Diamond, stop for a pizza or burger at the Greenview Bar and Grill where pizza dough is made fresh daily and the kitchen strives to use only the freshest local ingredients. The food here is outstanding as is the ambiance.
Have a group that needs a retreat or possibly a family reunion where everyone could use a bit of wellness and quiet? Mandala Springs and Wellness Retreat is a place to reset. From forest bathing to yoga, healthy, fresh meals and a place to jump in some hot springs … then do it all again, maybe with a glass of local wine, before heading back to reality. Mandala organizes retreat and events throughout the year but will gladly help you organize your own custom wellness experience.
When in Kelseyville, you have to eat at Public House! Their motto is “Welcome to our house—everyone is local, and locals are family.” The food here will blow you away. It’s good, fun, tasty and friendly. On The Waterfront Restaurant Lakeport is a modern eatery with a globally inspired, progressive menu of original dishes meant to be shared. The fresh and ever-changing seasonal menu is designed to tantalize your senses with a fusion of flavors, complemented by wine, to deliver an unforgettable experience. At the in Upper Lake, the atmosphere exudes a warm, inviting charm that makes it a local favorite. The rustic wooden interiors, adorned with vintage photographs and eclectic memorabilia, create a nostalgic ambiance that perfectly complements the hearty comfort food on the menu. Another local favorite is Red's at the Skyroom in Lakeport. Relax and watch the small planes fly in and out while enjoying traditional comfort food like fish and chips, specialty burgers, fried chicken sandwich or Uncle Gary’s Pot Roast Sandwich. But the twist? Oysters and sushi! Greenview Restaurant is another delicious option, located on the Hidden Valley Lake Golf Course.

The historic Sonoma Plaza – once a Mexican military outpost, fleeting frontier republic, and Spanish Mission village – is now a gorgeous historic landmark and “slow” culture capitol. Sonoma Plaza radiates romance around every corner, cafe and cobblestone. Whether you’re here for a day trip or extended stay, Sonoma Plaza offers the picture-perfect start (and end) to your adventures. It’s a pedestrian paradise, so ditch the car keys and discover real wine country on foot or bicycle. The Plaza’s old adobe storefronts, meandering alleyways, sunlit courtyards and historic landmarks hum with an eclectic mix of restaurants, hotels, tasting rooms, cafes, artisan boutiques, galleries –even a vintage movie house. As for the nature lover, wildflower hikes and stunning hilltop vistas abound within just a short distance. Anchoring it all is the tranquil Plaza itself, whose vast green stretches of lawn and immense tree canopy create a lush setting for picnics, cultural activities and weekly farmers markets.
Sonoma Plaza boasts a rich tapestry of historic landmarks that beckon visitors to immerse themselves in the region’s storied past. The Plaza’s crown jewel is undoubtedly the Sonoma Barracks, erected in the early 19th century under Mexican rule. These barracks witnessed pivotal moments in California’s history, including the Bear Flag Revolt of 1846, commemorated by the Bear Flag Statue, which stands across the street in the park. This stirring monument pays homage to the bold pioneers who sought California's independence. Nearby stands the Mission San Francisco Solano, the last of California’s 21 missions, founded in 1823. Its graceful adobe architecture and tranquil gardens offer a glimpse into California's Spanish colonial era. Strolling further, one encounters the Toscano Hotel, a testament to Sonoma’s early days as a bustling trade hub. Sonoma Plaza stands as a living testament to California’s diverse heritage and enduring spirit.
Just behind the Plaza is Depot Park, located on the bike path with Sonoma Valley History Museum, bocce, petanque and volleyball courts, picnic tables and playground. Friday mornings you’ll find the Farmers Market in the parking lot. Tuesday evenings, May through September, the Farmers Market also takes place in the Plaza with live music and food trucks.
