Steve Ledson comes from a long line of Sonoma County farmers and winemakers dating back to the 1860s. His hands-on dedication yields expressive, place-driven wines that reflect the character of Sonoma. Designed and built by Steve, the iconic Castle winery is considered one of the world’s most impressive. Enjoy private and seated tastings. Reserve a table by the fireplace or in the West Oak Grove, and explore the Gourmet Marketplace’s selection of artisanal cheeses, meats, sandwiches, salads, and treats.

Extreme elevation, distinctive soils, and meticulous sustainable farming create intensely expressive wines available exclusively through an annual allocation. Guests can also book guest houses with stunning vineyard and Bay Area views.

Located on the Historic Sonoma Plaza, this six-room boutique hotel was named one of the 100 Hottest New Hotals globally and one of the 9 Best Hotels in Sonoma County for Wine Tasting and Wellness Getaway by Condé Nast Traveler. Spring marks a new chapter for the Skunk Train’s Willits departures, just two hours from Napa and now the inland base for the railway’s newest experiences. With increased investment and expanded infrastructure, most new offerings are launching from Willits this season, reinforcing its role as the primary inland gateway to the redwoods. The focus is on movement and immersion, expanding how guests explore the landscape through active rail adventures and premium onboard service.
RAILBIKES ARRIVE IN WILLITS: INTRODUCING THE RAIL COASTER
Railbikes are making their first-ever appearance in Willits this May, offering a more active way to experience this stretch of track. Known as the Rail Coaster, this experience brings a heightened sense of motion and discovery to the rails. The route covers approximately seven and a half miles over multiple hours and operates Wednesdays through Sundays.
The Railbikes are pedal powered, with an electric assist that helps provide extra support while pedaling, allowing riders to set their own pace. Riders travel through elevated terrain, cross steep grades, and pass through a historic early twentieth century tunnel before reaching a scenic stretch of the line ideal for a rest and views of the redwoods. Lunch is included with every ticket and enjoyed as part of the experience.
From September 11 through September 27, 2026, the Flynn Creek Circus makes its debut, bringing a live outdoor-circus performance featuring world-class acrobats and aerialists to a redwood forest setting.

Known for site-specific shows that blend movement, storytelling, and daring physical performance, the Flynn Creek Circus creates intimate productions designed to exist only in the place they are performed. Guests will ride the train to a secluded redwood forest performance site, where the forest itself becomes part of the show. It is a one-of-a-kind experience, combining rail travel and live circus in a setting rarely seen in the modern day. Concessions, beverages, and exclusive merchandise will be available on site.

Joining the Skunk Train fleet later in the spring is The Noyo, a newly introduced railcar experience delivering Presidential Class service, the Skunk Train’s premium luxury onboard offering. The Redwood, a separate premium experience based in Fort Bragg, features a 1920s style, while The Noyo presents a mid-century modern lounge experience.
Guests receive two curated cocktails, elevated food service, and a commemorative glass keepsake, all included with the ticket. The car previously served as a U.S. Army Department of Transportation car and has been restored for passenger service. While designed as a premium experience, The Noyo is also available for private rentals, group celebrations, and full buyouts.
With a full lineup of new experiences debuting from Willits, there is something for every kind of traveler this season. Whether one offering sparks curiosity or several catch your eye, guests are invited to explore what is ahead and plan a Northern California getaway at skunktrain.com.

BY JENNIFER DADESHO
California wine country is certainly notable for producing some of the finest wines in the world and is home to acres of rolling vineyards, sublime views, and over-the-top tastes but, wine tasting doesn’t have to feel intimidating (or expensive, or overly serious). In fact, it can actually be quite chill and relaxed – think less stuffy; less “swirl-andsniff;” and more grab your friends, chase good vibes, and discover your new favorite sip.
Find casual and interactive experiences throughout wine country with zero snooty energy. Napa, Sonoma, and Lake counties are packed with approachable wines and trend-setting producers perfect for first-time tasters and casual sippers alike. No snobs, no stress, no fake vocabulary required. Think of it as vibes plus flavor plus curiosity and let’s get to the business of demyZtifying wine tasting.
> Start light. Grab sparkling wine or a Vermentino first to kick-off your day lightly. Chilled whites and bubbles are refreshing.
> Get funky. Head for a natural or minimal-intervention pour midday. Think Pét-Nat or interesting reds like Carignan.
> Finish bold. Try the quintessential benchmarks like Napa Valley Cabernets or Sonoma Chardonnays – just to gauge your own preference barometer.
> Picture a relaxed setting, a lineup of small pours, someone explaining what’s in your glass, and zero pressure to be an expert.
> The flow at most places usually consists of three to six small pours. You won’t become intoxicated unless you try!
> Someone will walk you through each wine and give you a brief low-down on what’s in your glass. Yes, you can interrupt and yes, questions are welcome!
> Sip, vibe, snack, and maybe buy a bottle you love.
Tastings are about discovering what you like, not about passing a test.
There is no “right” way, but here’s the cheat code.
> See: Check the color of your wine. Is it pale? Golden? Pink? Deep purple? Cool, noted.
> Smell: Stick your nose in. Seriously. Does the wine smell like fruit? Flowers? A farmer’s market? That’s valid.
> Sip: Have a small sip and let the wine hang out in your mouth for a sec—yay or nay? Yuck or yum?
> React: Ask yourself one thing only … Do I like this?
TIP That’s it. No need to say things like “structured tannins,” “wet slate,” or “terroir.” Instead, “I’d drink this chilling poolside,” is the perfectly elite tasting vernacular.
If big, heavy reds scare you, don’t sweat it. Not everyone starts there and not everyone lands there. Here are some directions to go:
> Chilled whites, like Sauvignon Blanc and Vermentino are crisp, refreshing, easy.
> Rosé gives summer energy and is food-friendly and can range from sweet to not.
> Bubbly wine, namely Pét-Nat, is a lightly effervescent sparkling wine (the bubbles happen during fermentation in the bottle) and ranges in light orange to rust colored. It’s fun and a little wild. If you like beer, steer here.
> Orange wine, the result of white wine staying in contact with grape skins, gives an amber-colored wine with funky, earthy flavors. It has nothing to do with citrus fruit!
> Reds on the light side – such as Gamay, Pinot Noir, and Grenache – are super enjoyable when chilled. Remember, it’s your wine. So, have it your way.
If you like beer, try Pét-Nat or chillable reds. If cocktails are more your jam, try aromatic whites, orange wines, or sparkling wines. If seltzers are your go-to, try rosé or crisp whites.
Pét-Nat (short for pétillant naturel) is a naturally sparkling wine made using one of the oldest winemaking methods, called the “ancestral method.” The wine is bottled before fermentation is finished, so the remaining sugars continue fermenting inside the bottle. That trapped fermentation creates the bubbles — no second fermentation, no added sugar, no added yeast.
A factor to keep in mind when discovering wines is that no two people will feel the same way about a wine style. In other words, just because someone tells you a particular wine is excellent, for example, and that it is reminiscent of blueberry jam and vanilla oak doesn’t necessarily mean that you will unequivocally detect the same tastes, let alone like that flavor profile! Wines are all unique, as are we.
Now, if you’ve ever been too intimidated to stop by a winery for a tasting, stop. Seriously. Remember: wine is what you make it. You like what you like – not what you’re “supposed” to like. Whether that means a chilled red; a fizzy, funky little number; or something that tastes more like a cocktail than a Cabernet, Northern California’s wine country has a pour (and a place) that fits your vibe. Show up curious, sip confidently, and let the experience be fun – because we all know that’s the actual point.

Have wine YOUR way at Whitehall Lane Winery.
From traditional bar tastings to estate tours and seated venues, build your experience your way and even add a snack or two.
Sip in the views of the Mayacamas Mountains from our Club Room while savoring the most exquisite Cabernets in our collection, from library releases to single-vineyard wines.

A quick and fun sip of three current-release wines, guided by one of our excellent educators, in our tasting room or on our front patio.

Enjoy a selection of fantastic Napa Valley wines that can only be found here. Relax in our Garden Pavilion among the vines and enjoy the sunshine (sunshine not guaranteed).

Make your visit extra special by adding on a cheese or charcuterie plate, or schedule a picnic lunch from Oakville Grocery to enjoy during your tasting.
Which adventure will you choose?

California’s premier cheese festival, the California Artisan Cheese Festival, returns for the 20th year with a three-day celebration, March 20-22, that showcases the people, stories, and flavors that make California cheese so special.
Produced by cheesemakers, experts and educators from the world of artisan cheese, the Festival offers a program of activities designed to connect people with the cheesemaking community and inspire deeper appreciation and enjoyment of cheese.
The Festival, which began in March 2007, has grown into three days of cheese tasting, education, and celebration that brings the public together with California's leading cheesemakers, experts and producers. Last year, over 2000 food lovers from 28 states (including California) and four countries attended at least one event.
This year the festival kicks off Friday, March 20th with fan-favorite farm and producer tours that offer a rare opportunity to go deep into local food culture and see firsthand where and how cheese gets its start. Meet the farmers, animals, cheesemakers and local producers and taste the fruits of their labor.
Cheese lovers can expand their knowledge and palates at Saturday’s seminars and workshops taught by some of the cheese world’s most knowledgeable experts. New this year will be a cheese and caviar pairing seminar and a raclette demo.
Also on Saturday is The Cheese Crawl at The Barlow in Sebastopol, an evening of grazing and discovery. Participants receive a map directing them to various businesses where artisan cheesemakers will serve samples of their finest cheeses accompanied by a featured food or beverage pairing. This experience is exclusively for guests 21 and over and sells out early.
Sunday morning sees the return of Bubbles & Bites, a thoughtfully curated tasting experience featuring California artisan cheeses paired with sparkling wine and delicious small bites, perfect for warming up one’s palate before the Marketplace opens. From there, enjoy VIP early entry to the Marketplace where attendees get to shop, taste and connect with the cheesemakers before the crowds arrive. Discover new favorites, stock up on specialty goods, and enjoy a more relaxed and spacious Marketplace experience.
The Festival culminates in the signature Sunday Marketplace in Grace Pavilion at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. It brings together more than 100 artisan cheese and specialty food producers as well as winemakers, craft brewers, distillers, cider makers, and chefs in one place. Enjoy live music, a beer and wine garden all while sampling cheese and locally made accompaniments. Each guest will receive a wineglass and insulated tote with ice pack to fill with all their Marketplace finds. It’s a delicious finish to the festival weekend.
Produced by the California Artisan Cheese Guild, the California Artisan Cheese Festival aims to increase cheese appreciation and educate consumers about artisan cheese by celebrating California’s cheesemakers and farmers.

CHEDDAR (Farmhouse-style, young)
For cheddars aged under 6 months which are fresh, creamy, lightly tangy, and not yet sharp
• Chenin Blanc – Crisp acidity with apple and pear notes
• Unoaked Chardonnay – Clean and balanced, mirrors the cheese’s creaminess

• Beaujolais – Light, fruity, and low in tannin
• Dry English-style Cider – Apple acidity enhances the cheese’s freshness
• Golden Ale – Light malt sweetness without heaviness
• Pilsner – Clean, crisp, and refreshing
SOFT-RIPENED/BLOOMY RIND/BRIE-STYLE
The creaminess and gently earthy notes of soft-and-bloomyrinded cheeses makes them ideal for bright, refreshing, or lightly structured pairings that balance the texture without overpowering the flavor.
• Sparkling Wine (Brut or Crémant) – Bubbles and acidity cut through the creaminess beautifully
• Vintage/French Champagne – A benchmark pairing; elegant and cleansing
• Chardonnay (unoaked or lightly oaked) – Complements buttery notes without heaviness
• Sauvignon Blanc – Crisp acidity lifts the richness
• Chenin Blanc – Bright, apple-driven acidity with subtle honey notes
• Dry Riesling – Refreshing contrast to the cheese’s lush texture
• Beaujolais – Low tannin and bright fruit won’t overwhelm the cheese
• Pinot Noir – Especially with mushroom-forward flavored Brie
• Belgian-style Witbier – Light, citrusy, and refreshing
• Saison – Dry and slightly peppery, great with bloomy rinds
• Dry Hard Cider – A classic, elegant match

For creamy, tangy, and balanced California Blues which are less sharp and salty than traditional European Bleu cheese:
• Late-Harvest Sauvignon Blanc – Bright acidity with a touch of sweetness
• California Zinfandel – Ripe fruit balances tang and salt
• Syrah / Petite Sirah – Dark fruit and savory notes complement richness
• Cabernet Sauvignon – Structure stands up to bold blue flavors
• Sweet Riesling or Gewürztraminer – Sweet-salty contrast with aromatics

• Port-style Dessert Wines – A classic and indulgent match
• Imperial Stout – Roasty, chocolatey depth pairs beautifully
• Barleywine – Malty sweetness balances tang
• Belgian Dubbel – Caramel and spice play well with blue
Inspired by the mountain cheeses of The Alps, California Alpine-style cheeses are typically firm to semi-firm cow’s-milk which have been aged to develop depth, nuttiness, and notes of caramel and hay when melted.
• Unoaked or lightly oaked Chardonnay – subtle creaminess mirrors its smooth texture.
• Chenin Blanc – Lively acidity, apple-pear notes lift nutty, savory flavors; keeps the palate fresh
• Dry Riesling – Crisp acidity and minerality balance the cheese’s gentle sweetness
• Fruity Pinot Noir – Low tannins, bright red-fruit notes complement without overwhelming.
• Lager – Clean, crisp carbonation refreshes the palate; highlights savory character.
• Pilsner – Light bitterness and bright finish cut through richness
• Amber ale – Malty sweetness echoes caramelized, nutty notes in the cheese.
• Fruit-forward but dry cider – Bright acidity, apple flavors provide balance to creamy, alpine styles.

Petit Soleil has long been a favorite in Napa for its relaxed vibe, generous portions, and all-day breakfast-and-lunch menu that feels both comforting and fresh. Now, the popular café is entering a new era with its move from its longtime Clay Street home to a more visible location at 1000 Imola Avenue, marking an exciting evolution for the locally loved spot.

The new location, previously home to Huckleberry’s Breakfast and Lunch and situated next to a hotel at the south end of town, offers a noticeable upgrade in accessibility and exposure. Where the original downtown space felt tucked away, the Imola Avenue site places Petit Soleil along a busy corridor frequented by locals, commuters, and visitors alike. For owner Trena Madrigal, a Napa native with deep roots in the hospitality community, the move represents both growth and opportunity. This transition is an exciting way to close one chapter while opening another.
Despite the change in address, the heart of Petit Soleil remains the same. Guests can still look forward to the café’s signature lineup of breakfast and lunch favorites

— fluffy pancakes, classic omelets, eggs Benedict, hearty sandwiches, burgers, fresh salads, and a full coffee and espresso program. The new space may also allow for more seating and a smoother flow, making it even easier to drop in for a casual weekday breakfast or a leisurely weekend brunch.
Strategically located near hotels and major roadways, the Imola Avenue location positions Petit Soleil to welcome new faces while continuing to serve its loyal regulars. The move underscores the café’s enduring role as a neighborhood gathering place — one built on good food, warm service, and a sense of community, now in a refreshed and more prominent setting.

Women’s History Month is a moment to spotlight the women whose influence runs deep across California wine country — not just through the wines they make, but in the way visitors experience these places. From vineyard-focused tastings and library pours to intimate estate visits and relaxed social spaces, these seven wineries offer thoughtful, memorable ways to experience how women are shaping California wine. For more information on these wineries and regions, visit www.discovercaliforniawines.com.
SUZANNE GROTH (Owner/President)
Groth Vineyards & Winery — Oakville
At the family winery established in 1982, second-generation owner and president Suzanne Groth prioritizes quality while stewarding the land for future generations through organic farming practices. Guests experience the estate through curated tastings and opportunities to explore selections from the family’s library. Weekend ATV tours take visitors deeper into the estate vineyards, offering a ground-up perspective on how site, farming and time shape the wines in the glass.

GRETCHEN RODDICK (Executive Vice President)
Hope Family Wines — Paso Robles
Gretchen Roddick is known for helping guide the winery from a small family operation into a nationally recognized brand. Visits unfold across two distinct settings. Downtown, Hope on Park invites guests to sip at the sidewalk bar, people-watch from lounge seating or try blind “black glass” tastings, where wines are served in opaque glasses. At the estate, the Austin Hope Tasting Cellar offers seated tastings on the family vineyard, including librarystyle tastings of Austin Hope Cabernet across multiple vintages.
CATHY CORISON (Winemaker/Founding Partner) and GRACE CORISON MARTIN (Assistant Winemaker)
Corison Winery – St. Helena
At Corison, tastings showcase Cabernet Sauvignon from benchland between Rutherford and St. Helena. In their library tasting, guests get a rare glimpse of wines made years apart from the same site, as well as a selection from one of their organic estate vineyards, Kronos or Sunbasket. The experience reflects the work of mother-and-daughter team Cathy Corison and Grace Corison Martin, introducing both the winery’s history and its present direction, including their focus on sustainability.

MARISSA LANGE (President)
LangeTwins Family Winery & Vineyards – Lodi
Under President Marissa Lange’s stewardship, the winery received the 2024 Green Medal Leader Award for sustainability. That commitment to regenerative farming is visible across the property, from native plantings to owl boxes that support biodiversity and naturally protect the vineyards. Visitors can build their own tasting flight in the working winery, sampling wines that range from Zinfandel to Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc.

MOLLY DREW (Co-Proprietor)
Drew Family Cellars — Mendocino Ridge

MARTHA STOUMEN (Founder/Winemaker)
Martha Stoumen Wines – Healdsburg
Martha Stoumen invites guests to spend time learning about grapes that fall outside the mainstream, such as Nero d’Avola, Negroamaro and Valdiguié. As founder and winemaker, Stoumen is known for her curiosity-driven approach, often pouring wines side by side to spark conversation around farming choices and how these varieties express themselves in California. Her downtown Healdsburg tasting room encourages open-table explorations rather than formal tastings.
Perched high above the fog in the Mendocino Ridge AVA, one of California’s most remote coastal appellations, Drew Family Cellars offers an intimate, appointment-only visit in a dramatic coastal setting. Molly Drew, alongside husband Jason Drew, is widely recognized for her commitment to Mendocino Ridge. Drew is the most westward vineyard in California. At the estate, guests taste Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and other small-lot wines while learning how elevation, wind and cold coastal air influence the wines in the glass.

ASHLEY EGELHOFF (Winemaker)
Honig Vineyard & Winery — Napa Valley
Ashley is known locally for guiding Honig’s Sauvignon Blanc as a consistent Rutherford benchmark, alongside the estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon. Visitors can book Honig’s Eco Tour & Tasting, which pairs a six-person cart tour through the Rutherford vineyards with a look at the winery’s long-standing sustainability practices, followed by a seated tasting. The Reserve Room experience offers a deeper dive into small-production wines, while outdoor terrace tastings keep the focus on vineyard views.

While the rest of the world is gloomily saying farewell to the last echoes of the holiday season, Napa Valley is already moving on to a time where the Valley is lush with new life. January through March means Mustard Season here in wine country, and visitors from all over arrive to marvel at the region’s transformation into a brilliant display of color and artistry. It is as though the world has quietly, magically reset itself: winter becomes a distant memory, and everywhere you look, the valley teems with sunshine-yellow life.
Long before it became one of Wine Country’s most beloved seasonal sights, Jesuit priests planted mustard between vineyard rows out of simple necessity. Early growers sowed it as a cover crop, valuing its ability to enrich the soil, prevent erosion, and attract beneficial insects during the dormant winter months. Over time, what began as practical farming wisdom evolved into a defining visual signature of the region. Each winter and early spring, the bright yellow blooms return, threading their way between bare vines and signaling both renewal and continuity — a living reminder that Wine Country’s beauty is deeply rooted in thoughtful stewardship of the land.
All throughout the valley, festivities celebrating this spectacular season will cater to every sense, and incredible food, wine and art are here to pair perfectly with the vibrant backdrop. Indulge in expressive wines at lively celebrations, enjoy unforgettable culinary experiences brought to you by some of the best chefs in the world, and, thanks to Napa Valley Mustard Celebration founder Jessel Miller, some wonderful works of local art. Miller, an artist herself and owner of the longest-running art gallery in Napa (Jessel Gallery), has long been dedicated to uplifting and preserving Napa Valley’s local art scene, so you can expect quite a few inspiring pieces to take center stage.

Each year, the celebration includes a featured artist, responsible for designing the official Napa Valley Mustard Celebration poster. This year’s featured artist is Paul Youngman, a Wisconsin-born Napa local who has been painting vivid oil renditions of wine country’s stunning landscapes since 1976. He has a knack for capturing the true essence of the valley in rich, extraordinary bursts of color, and his work for this year’s mustard season is no exception. Prints of the poster featuring Youngman’s painting, Winter into Spring, are available for purchase both online and at a number of Mustard Celebration events.
Browse works by local artists at a curated exhibit that captures the breathtaking beauty of Napa Valley’s Wild Winter Mustard Season through the lens of talented photographers – through March 26 – with The Photo Finale Closing Reception & People’s Choice Award presentation
MARCH 7th-8th, Jessel Miller welcomes you to Jessel Gallery’s NVMV Celebration, which will feature art by a wide variety of talented Napa Valley artists. This year’s featured artist, Paul Youngman, will be there as well, so you’ll have the opportunity to chat with him about his work and even take a signed print home. Miller will also be hosting a similar artist demonstration event on the weekend of March 7th-8th, so you’ll have multiple chances to experience the artistry.
Of course, in MARCH, the smell of mustard blossoms isn’t the only thing in the air — love is, too. Celebrate Valentine’s Day and Mustard Season at the Collings & Légère Art Gallery, where mustard-inspired beauty makes everything feel rosy. Enjoy complimentary hot chocolate with your sweetheart and discover the exquisite paintings of local impressionist artists Marta Collings and Thérèse Légère.
St. Helena is getting in on the mustard season excitement, too, with a special Mustard Celebration Day at the St. Helena
Welcome Center on Friday, MARCH 27th. Savor seasonally inspired food and wine as you browse local photographer Rob Watermeyer’s works and soak in the lively atmosphere of this charming town coming to life.
March brings mustard season to a close, and will be ending on a high note with the American Canyon Mustard Celebration Event hosted by American Canyon Chamber of Commerce on March 21 at RD Winery, featuring a variety of vendors as well as special musical performances by local youth programs.
Then, as the final mustard season hurrah, DoNapa Downtown Association is throwing a two-day Mustard Celebration Finale: A Festival of Wine, Food & Art on March 27th and 28th at the Culinary Institute of America at Copia in downtown Napa, where you will have the chance to try food, sip wines, and browse goodies from over 75 different artisans. Get your tickets now — this event is a must-attend, and space fills up fast!
As one of Napa Valley’s most anticipated seasons, this is the perfect time to book a wine country getaway, so what are you waiting for? Watch the valley burst to life as we welcome these brilliant blooms with open arms.

Explore these AVAs for outstanding wines, views, people
BY RONDA GIANGRECO
The Sonoma County wine country offers what many visitors seek … an experience that combines amazing wine, culinary excellence, breathtaking scenery, and an opportunity to leave the din of city life behind. Everywhere there’s a sense of the peaceful co-existence between the land and the people. Warm, welcoming and unhurried tasting experiences offer visitors a respite from the crowds. World-class dining, minus the pretension, can be enjoyed at a slower pace, often in outdoor settings that yield a feast for all the senses. Simply put, wine and food taste even more delicious when enjoyed while taking in a panorama of rolling hills, verdant vineyards and towering redwoods.
The Sonoma County wine region actually consists of 19 American Vinticulture Areas, or AVAs. Each AVA provides a unique set of components to the wine growing region that include soil content, weather and elevation. The result is wines that beautifully reflect what Mother Nature has graciously provided. At the north end are three distinct AVAs: Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley and Russian River. This month, the Pour + Explore event, taking place on March 13, will focus on wines produced specifically in these three AVAs.
Alexander Valley, in northeastern Sonoma County, is famous for producing rich, velvety Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Merlot, Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. Vintners discovered the area’s potential in 1984, and the Alexander Valley has now become the largest and most heavily planted wine region in Sonoma County, with over 15,000 acres of vineyards along the Russian

River. Encompassing the charming towns of Healdsburg and Geyserville, the valley faces the southwest-slopes of the storied Mayacamas Mountains. With hot afternoons, followed by nights with cool breezes and morning fog, the Alexander Valley offers a unique climate that produces deep, complex flavors and acidity. These factors are essential to creating the ideal conditions for growing premium wine grapes. Visitors can enjoy the bounty of the Alexander Valley at nearly forty wineries and tasting rooms. In 2025, Conde Nast Traveler rated the region as one of the top destinations in the country.
Dry Creek Valley gets its name from the picturesque Dry Creek, a tributary of the Russian River. The valley extends from the Warms Springs Creek, just south of Healdsburg, and stretches sixteen miles by two miles wide, encompassing
several thousand acres of vineyards, over sixty wineries, most of which are privately owned. The Dry Creek Valley is best known for bold, beautiful Zinfandels, produced in one of the most rural and authentic settings in the wine country of California. Dining options, while a bit limited, reflect the simple, nofrills approach to life that characterizes the heart of this charming corner of the world.
The Russian River Valley AVA is a 96,000-acre wine region traversed by the scenic Russian River, a favorite recreational area for locals and visitors, alike. Encompassing the historic towns of Forestville, Sebastopol and Healdsburg, the Russian River Valley AVA is noted for its cool climate, majestic Redwoods, and proximity to the coast. Ocean breezes arrive from just a few miles away and waft over the vineyards, the result being outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The Sonoma County is the perfect wine region for people seeking an authentic, unhurried, and incredibly memorable wine country experience, there’s no comparison.

Pour + Explore is an exciting tasting experience produced by Sonoma County Vintners in collaboration with Sommelier Christopher Sawyer! Discover wonderful wines that epitomize the essence of each winemaker’s individual style and the region’s distinctive vineyards. These festive evenings include a walk-around tasting of a curated selection of wines from each vintner, along with light appetizers.

Wine Road Northern Sonoma County is thrilled to announce a special "throwback" ticket price of $50 for its 48th Annual Barrel Tasting Weekend, taking place March 7-8. In honor of Wine Road’s upcoming 50th Anniversary, this exceptional value offers attendees access to two full days of wine tasting across more than 50 participating wineries in the Alexander, Dry Creek, and Russian River Valleys.
As the longest-running wine event in California, Barrel Tasting Weekend has become a cherished tradition for wine lovers near and far. This signature event invites guests to step into the cellar and sample wines straight from the barrel, offering a unique glimpse into the future of the region’s vintages. The $50 weekend pass provides significant savings compared to standard tasting fees, making it an accessible way for enthusiasts to explore multiple wineries, meet the winemakers, and even purchase “futures” — wines sold at a discount before they are bottled.
“Barrel Tasting is a true celebration of the wines and wineries of Northern Sonoma County,” said Beth Costa, Executive Director of Wine Road. “The fact that this event has been around for 48 years and continues to appeal to generation after generation speaks to its staying power. We love hearing about our most dedicated Barrel Tasters that come every year, buy new futures, pick up their futures from the previous year, and then do it all again the next year.”
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Ticket holders will check in at their selected starting winery to receive their glass, wristband, and event program before setting off to explore the participating locations at their leisure. In addition to barrel samples, many wineries will offer current release tastings and access to rare library wines. While the event focuses on the wine, guests are encouraged to pack a picnic to enjoy the scenic grounds of the participating estates.
Tickets are on sale now and valid for both Saturday and Sunday, with no single-day option available. Guests must be 21 or older to participate in the tasting, though designated driver tickets are available. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the Wine Road website. wineroad.com

This April, Alexander Valley Winegrowers invite wine lovers — both new and experienced — to slow down, sip freely, and reconnect with the heart of wine country during TASTE Alexander Valley: Back to Our Roots, a month-long celebration of wine, hospitality, and genuine connection.
Running throughout the entire month of April, TASTE Alexander Valley offers a rare opportunity to experience the region without the usual barriers of tasting fees. Participating wineries will provide complimentary tastings, welcoming guests to explore at their own pace while engaging directly with the growers, winemakers, and owners who define Alexander Valley.
Participating wineries include ACTA Wine, Silver Oak Cellars, Alexander Valley Vineyards, Trione Vineyards & Winery, Bedarra Vineyards, Lampson Family Wines, La Cienega Vineyard, Ramazzotti Wines, Mercury Wine, Robert Young Estate Winery, Stuhlmuller Vineyards, J Rickards Winery, and more.
Notably, some participating wineries are not typically open to the public, making TASTE Alexander Valley a rare opportunity to enjoy intimate tasting experiences and behind-the-scenes perspectives that are seldom available outside of this month-long event.
As part of its commitment to welcoming new wine drinkers, TASTE Alexander Valley is also introducing a Wine 101 crash course designed specifically for college-age and Gen Z guests of legal drinking age. Hosted at Silver Oak Cellars on Saturday, April 11th, this complimentary experience pairs a local sommelier with a vine-to-bottle immersion that is approachable, inclusive, and intentionally not snobby. Participants will learn the basics of wine — how it’s made, how to taste it, and most importantly, how to understand what they like — without pressure or pretense.
In addition to complimentary tastings throughout the valley, TASTE Alexander Valley features curated experiences designed to deepen visitors’ connection to the region. Highlights include vintner pop-ups at local restaurants and hotels, an interactive tasting map, and a special WinemakerHosted Dinner at The Matheson on Saturday, April 18 — bringing together Alexander Valley wines and exceptional cuisine for an intimate evening in downtown Healdsburg.

For the first time, the weekend will be hosted at Appellation Healdsburg, Chef Palmer’s new flagship resort and dining destination in the heart of Sonoma County.
The 2026 edition embraces a meaningful father-and-son theme, honoring the evolution of culinary craftsmanship through mentorship, legacy, and innovation. Revered culinary icons will cook alongside the next generation of chefs shaping the future of American dining.

Lagasse; Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Cédric Vongerichten; and Dr. L Tim Ryan and Jackson Ryan. Together, they form a one-of-a-kind gathering rooted in tradition and forward-thinking creativity.
“For nearly two decades, Pigs & Pinot has brought people together through incredible food, wine, and a shared sense of purpose,” says Chef Palmer. “Bringing the event to Appellation Healdsburg feels like a full-circle moment—honoring our roots while celebrating the next generation of hospitality leaders.”
Complementing the culinary talent is an inspiring roster of trailblazing winemakers, highlighted by the event’s first-ever all-female Gala lineup. Featured winemakers include Eva Dehlinger (Dehlinger Winery), Perri Haughwout (Perri Jaye Vineyards), Ashley Herzberg (Innumero Wines), Anne Moller-Racke (Blue Farm Wines), and Heidi von der Mehden (Merry Edwards). The weekend is further elevated by emcee Mario Cantone, whose wit anchors the festivities, and Bob Cabral, Pigs & Pinot Wine Director and one of California’s most iconic Pinot Noir authorities.
Philanthropy Remains at the Heart of Pigs & Pinot
Since its inception, the event has raised more than $2 million to support scholarships and community programs benefiting the next generation of hospitality professionals. TASTE OF YOUNTVILLE
Chandon, Yountville
Delicious wines crafted by Yountville Tasting Rooms and Wineries along with Farm to Table bites from the Chandon Culinary Team. This intimate event is limited to 300 guests. yountville.com
Just north of Napa and Sonoma, Lake County wine offers a refreshing blend of dramatic landscapes and exceptional craftsmanship. Defined by its namesake, Clear Lake, California’s largest natural freshwater lake, this North Coast region sits at high elevation, surrounded by rugged volcanic ridges.
Terroir and the Taste of Place
With nine AVAs, including Red Hills, High Valley, Big Valley, Kelsey Bench and Guenoc Valley, each area reveals a distinct expression of the land.
Vineyards climb to remarkable elevations, where crisp mountain air and mineral-rich soils shape bold, structured wines. The volcanic soils and alluvial terraces provide excellent drainage, resulting in smaller berries and concentrated fruit. Meanwhile, Clear Lake moderates the temperature, keeping the vines cool under California’s generous sun.
The result? Wines with personality. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the vineyards, accounting for 47% of plantings, producing wines with dark fruit, firm tannins and impressive balance. Sauvignon Blanc follows closely at 21%, offering zesty freshness and aromatic lift. Other key varieties include Petite Sirah, Chardonnay, Zinfandel and Merlot.
This area produces grapes coveted by winemakers across Napa and Sonoma for their structure and intensity. But local producers are now making a name for themselves, proving that Lake County wine can stand confidently on its own.
The county’s clean air, combined with long daylight hours and cooler evenings, allows grapes to ripen slowly, developing deep color and complexity while maintaining balance. It’s no surprise that Lake County is earning acclaim for Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon

Blanc that are both powerful and refined.
Savoring sustainability
Like other winegrowing regions in California, wineries in Lake County take proactive steps to reduce emissions and greenhouse gases by using low-emission engines, practicing low-tillage farming and planting cover crops that naturally filter carbon dioxide (CO2), a common greenhouse gas from the air.
To understand Lake County Wine at its best, you have to taste it where it’s made. Here are some wineries to add to your itinerary:
Six Sigma Ranch & Winery
Combining old-world charm and modern precision, Six Sigma farms 4,300 acres sustainably in the Red Hills AVA. Their small-lot Tempranillo, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon embody meticulous attention to detail and balance.
Brassfield Estate Winery
Perched in the High Valley AVA, this breathtaking estate grows over 500 acres of vines on volcanic soils.
Certified sustainable, Brassfield produces elegant Zinfandels, Bordeaux-style blends and Rhône varieties.
Fults Family Vineyards
A family-run operation along Clayton Creek, producing handcrafted wines that celebrate local fruit and downhome hospitality. Their approachable Cabernet and Merlot are perfect for a relaxed afternoon by the water.
Langtry Farms Vineyard and Winery
Langtry sits within the Guenoc Valley AVA, the first single-winery AVA in the nation. Known for its velvety Petite Sirah and long history of innovation, this estate remains a cornerstone of local wine heritage.
Wild Diamond Vineyards
Set on volcanic slopes with sweeping views, Wild Diamond is dedicated to crafting full-bodied, ageworthy wines. Their commitment to sustainable farming and minimal intervention lets the natural beauty of Lake County wine shine through in every bottle.

While sometimes overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, this laid-back destination provides an authentic wine country experience without the crowds. A day in Glen Ellen is best spent exploring its scenic landscapes, discovering its vibrant local businesses, and, of course, sampling world-class wines.

At the heart of wine country, Sonoma Plaza offers a perfectly walkable, effortlessly charming way to experience the best of Sonoma—one sip, bite, and boutique at a time. Anchored by a leafy central square shaded with centuries-old trees, the Plaza feels both lively and relaxed, making it an ideal starting point for a day of tasting, shopping, and dining.

Between tastings, the Plaza’s shops add another layer of delight. Locally owned boutiques line the surrounding streets, offering everything from artisan goods and handcrafted jewelry to home décor, gourmet foods, and wine-country-inspired fashion. You’ll find pieces that feel
distinctly Sonoma — thoughtful, creative, and rooted in a sense of place. Even browsing feels unhurried, with plenty of benches and cafés nearby for a pause when the mood strikes.
Dining around Sonoma Plaza is just as varied and inviting. From casual cafés perfect for a midday bite to refined restaurants showcasing seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, there’s something to suit every appetite and occasion. Many menus reflect the region’s agricultural abundance, pairing beautifully with local wines. Whether you’re settling in for a long lunch, grabbing small plates between tastings, or enjoying a relaxed dinner as the sun sets, the experience feels both elevated and welcoming.
What truly sets Sonoma Plaza apart is the way it brings everything together so seamlessly. Wine, food, shopping, and history coexist in a compact, picturesque setting that encourages wandering and lingering. A visit here isn’t rushed or rigid — it’s about savoring the moment, soaking in the atmosphere, and enjoying Sonoma at a pace that feels
