This program provides rental assistance and linkage with community supports for i ndi v i dual s e xiting c or r ec tiona l institutions and mental health institutions that do not have a place to live. This reentry program has three goals: I.

Re-Entry Initiative Who is eligible to participate?

Why do we need a Re-Entry Program?

Studies show that the risk of going back to jail increases by 17-23% if formerly incarcerated individuals are homeless.

Nationally, more than 650,000 people are released form state prisons and an estimated nine million are released from jails each year.

In the United States, the number of people being released from prison has increased 350% over the last 20 years. During this same time, the number of people who are homeless has swelled dramatically, to the current level of up to 850,000 on any given day.

More than 10% of those going in and out of prisons and jails are homeless before their incarceration and 49% of homeless adults have reportedly spent five or more days in a jail over their lifetime.

Locally in 2011, Spokane County Jail released 18,193 people and the Department of Corrections released 548 prisoners into Spokane County.

The success of this program reduces recidivism, increases public safety and saves tax payer dollars.

Serving a Drug Offender Sentencing Alternative (DOSA) sentence in a Spokane County inpatient treatment facility

Keys to Program Success The Re-Entry Initiative Program has two key components that provide the foundation for success; Responsible Renters Program Participants are required to complete this three part class that covers Renters Rights and Responsibilities, Money Management and Landlord Communication Monthly Compliance Moral Reconation Therapy is one form of monthly compliance which involves repatterning thought processes that lead to criminal behavior. Other forms of monthly compliance could include cooperation with outpatient treatment requirements or Mental Health Court requirements.
