SPOKANE COUNTY’S 30% DROPOUT RATE

Our country is faced with two major issues: The dropout rate is higher than ever. Thirty percent of Spokane County students do not finish high school.

• A high school dropout costs society over $2 million over the course of their lifetime.

• By the age of 25, a high school dropout is more likely to be in jail than employed.

COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS

Communities In Schools of Spokane County is the answer. In September of 2008 we started supporting Chase, Cheney and Glover Middle Schools.

Communities In Schools is a nationwide organization whose goal is to connect needed community resources to students in the school system.

Communities In Schools is unique in that we: • Place individual site coordinators in the schools to connect at-risk youth to the business community.

• We hold ourselves accountable with rigid reporting requirements that demand success so that your business will see results.

Communities In Schools will place a site coordinator in a school and provide programming for an entire year.

Encourage employee volunteerism. Make it easy to volunteer one hour a week during the school day.

ADOPT A SITE COORDINATOR - $26,000

This will allow Communities In Schools to place the site coordinator in a school 20 hours a week for one year.

Establish a job shadow program for high school students. Inspire them to a new level.

Make a presentation to a school. Share the story of your business and what it takes to do the job.

SPONSOR A MONTH - $4,000

Sponsor a month’s worth of in-school staffing and programming.

Participate in a career fair or offer a tour of your workplace to a group of 7th graders.

SPONSOR A PROGRAM - $1,500

This will allow Communities In Schools to pay one of our Youth Providers to bring programming in at least once a week for 6 to 8 weeks.

Annual Report for School Year 2010-2011 Our mission is “to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to succeed in school and prepare for life.”

We connect community resources to meet the needs of the right kids, at the right time, right at school. This frees teachers to do what they do best: teach. Read on to discover how we impact the lives of kids and their families at Glover, Chase, Shaw, and Sheridan Elementary in Spokane and Cheney Middle and Sunset Elementary in Cheney.

Middle school Site Coordinators offer intensive interventions for hun-

dreds of students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Individualized interventions include matches with mentors, backpacks of foods for the weekend, mobile dental screenings and sealants, a safe place to be after school, and a caring adult connecting kids to resources.

Volunteers made a difference mentoring over 150 students at Glover, Chase, Cheney Middle Schools and Sheridan Elementary. Students learned more about themselves, set goals regarding school success, college, careers, and life. Sheridan students met with their mentors one hour each week to experience the positive power of a caring community member. High school juniors in the CORE program at Lewis and Clark benefited from one-to-one mentoring with our VISTA Volunteer, which focused on credit retrieval, college planning, and steady attendance.

College Bound: Spokane and Cheney 7th and 8th graders are College

Bound! The College Bound scholarship will make a world of difference to first-generation college students in 4 or 5 years when their in-state tuition is covered by this amazing scholarship for families who qualify by income. College Bound clubs and events reinforce the wonder of college to pursue a technical career or a 4-year degree.

Students engaged in our after school programs and services improved their attendance, behavior, and grades. All of the middle school programs offer homework help with certified teachers, tutors, and mentors. Our results prove that showing up and working hard equals success!

Sunset Elementary in Airway Heights (Cheney School District) was selected as the ideal site to launch our first School Based Health Center in Spokane County. CISSC is grateful for a Gates Foundation grant that supported a 2-year planning process with community leaders. The grand opening in January 2012 will make it easy for students and their families in Airway Heights to access full medical care through this CHAS administered clinic right on the school’s campus.

Over 150 students warmed up to academics and enrichment in our summer programs at Glover, Chase, and Cheney Middle schools. Students transitioning from elementary to middle school get a boost when they start in July by meeting staff, other students, and getting to know the building. Parents and students have remarked how much easier 7th grade has been thanks to summer school!

Art Sparks! funded three full days of fabulous art instruction to elementary and Glover students in the West Central neighborhood this summer. Nationally acclaimed artists, Ron and Marsha Feller, taught students how to make creative paper masks, write songs related to their masks, and design block prints. Children from summer camps at Girl Scouts, Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, Peaceful Valley, and West Central Community Center sparked their imaginations in this exciting arts program. Glover students also picked up some new angles on the world through their unique Intro to Photography class sponsored by Art Sparks!

Stronger families are just what you would expect from graduates of the research-based Strengthening Families Program offered to 20 families at Glover Middle and Sheridan Elementary. After 8 weeks of focused work, students 10-14 gained more appreciation for their parents, identified their personal and professional dreams, and learned how to make good choices in friends. Meanwhile, the parents learned the skills to facilitate a family meeting, set and deliver on appropriate rewards and consequences, and share their specific expectations for their student’s healthy behaviors.

Communities In Schools of Spokane County is leading the charge to keep kids in school. By providing coordinators at targeted schools we are getting the right kids the right services at the right time. The site coordinator’s job is to collaborate with community agencies to bring services to kids. Communities In Schools provides the vital link between the school and the community. During the 2009-2010 school year we had coordinators at 4 schools, and we NOW have site coordinators placed in 6 schools: Glover, Chase, Cheney and Shaw Middle Schools, Sheridan Elementary and Lewis and Clark High School.

Different kids have different needs. Our individualized approach gets kids the help they need – when they need it. Help can be as simple as providing eyeglasses to a child in need or as intensive as afterschool tutoring; it all depends on the child.

At the core of our evidence-based model is the site coordinator who works directly in schools to connect students with volunteers and services that reduce obstacles to learning. By channeling support directly to kids at school we promote student success, ease the burden on schools, and free teachers to teach.

Communities In Schools is necessary for three reasons We are the connection between the community and the school.

The 520 students who received in-school dental care during the past 18 months benefited from this because of Communities In Schools. The traveling dental hygienist, working under the Communities In Schools’ umbrella contract agreement, was able to provide just-in-time preventative dental care – a perfect example of effective and impactful service brokering and delivery.

We free the teachers to teach.

By offering the right services to the right students at the right time we are freeing up the teachers to do what they do best: teach! Teachers and schools can’t do it alone: we add resources to meet the unique needs of students and families so teachers can focus on educating children.

We can show the results of our services.

We get measurable results when we work with individual students and meet their needs through our school and community resources. The risk factors associated with dropping out of school are reduced through caring and focused service delivery. Our services make a difference.

schools can’t do it alone

The high school drop out rate in Spokane County is higher than the state average, sitting around 30%. To lower the dropout rate and help kids in need, Communities In Schools of Spokane County was established in 2007 to implement a national model with an outcome-based solution. CIS of Spokane County currently has site coordinators in 3 schools: Glover, Chase, and Cheney Middle Schools. The site coordinators are actively serving the comprehensive needs of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.

PROGRAMS OFFERED Basic needs On November 14th, 2008, in conjunction with 2nd Harvest Food Bank, we started a Friday backpack program for 10 students at each school. The children are referred by counselors and teachers. CIS gives them a backpack full of food, provided by 2nd Harvest, to take home for the weekend.

We work closely with schools, social services, businesses and dedicated volunteers to get young people the things they need to learn and grow - mentors and tutors, after-school help, family services to stabilize the home.

Our school site coordinators respond quickly, on a case-by-case basis to get kids what they need — when they need it. Help can be as simple as providing eyeglasses to a child in need or as intensive as afterschool tutoring; it all depends on the child.

In November 2008 we launched career weeks at three schools. Career presentations are featured culminating with a tour of a job site for participants.

We offered a research-based, best practice program, “Strengthening Families” at Glover Middle School. Our team of certified facilitators is ready to launch programs in each district.

Proven, evidence-based strategy: Of the many organizations working to improve student outcomes, Communities In Schools, through coordination of services, is proven to be more effective. Our targeted work results in higher graduation rates, and higher percentages of students reaching proficiency in math and reading.

We partner with Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Red Cross, Junior Achievement, WSU Food Sense, Gonzaga Students and other community organizations to offer students various activities after school.

Academic Support In conjunction with ESD101 we received a 21st Century Learning Center grant that allows schools to hire tutors to bolster those struggling with academics. We supplement homework help centers with volunteers, primarily from colleges and universities.
