The Plastic Migrant

At the end of June, a wonderful community project came into fruition as 'The Plastic Migrant' was performed in the Great WyrleyAcademyTheatre. Coordinated by Goldsmith Primary Academy, this was a community project with ProfessorAR Gatrad OBE in order to highlight the use of single plastic as well as climate change issues around the world. It was advertised within local social media and amateur dramatic societies and involved staff and pupils from Goldsmith as well as technical support from Great Wyrley students. The remainder of the cast and crew came from a couple of local drama groups; a church group from Walsall; a local poet; a local dance group; and Walsall College.

Performed over three nights, the play was enjoyed by the audiences while the message was clear that we must all work together to help reduce, reuse, refuse and recycle. For a majority of the cast, this was their first opportunity to 'tread the boards' giving them the opportunity to develop their acting talents as well as thoroughly enjoying their performing. This was collaboration at its best: both within the WATfamily and integration of the local community. Aligning with our sustainable goals and moral purpose, this project has brought into the spotlight the important issue of climate change whilst also bringing together different parts of the community and giving an opportunity for children to develop their confidence, communication and resilience.

AGreenerApproach to Waste Management

As our waste contracts end between now andApril 2024, we will be moving all schools across to B&M Waste. This will not only have a positive impact on sustainability around trying to get zero waste to landfill, but will also result in a reduction in the cost of waste services across the family.

B&M Waste are a national, carbon-neutral total waste management company with a Zero-to-Landfill ethos. They are dedicated to increasing their customers’recycling efficiency and committed to providing industry-leading sustainable solutions alongside understanding and managing the environmental and social impacts of waste management.

They achieved Carbon Neutral status in 2011 and have continued with an aim to further reduce carbon emissions to offset the net remainder. In 2021 they achieved Carbon Neutral Plus status - going beyond Carbon Neutral to Carbon Negative.

B&M have recently opened a new state-of-the-art materials and recycling facility in Birmingham, the new site will take in the commercial waste collected, which will be separated on-site, with any recyclable materials such as cardboard, glass, wood and metals prepared for recycling, with the remaining non recyclable general waste and separated food waste transported to energy recovery facilities.
