Ten Essential Items That Every Hiker Should Carry Navigation

Always carry a detailed map of the area that you are hiking in and a compass.

Hydration

It is essential to drink a lot of water while hiking. Without water, your body doesn't perform as well and you could grow more susceptible to heat stroke, hypothermia and altitude sickness.

Nutrition

Always bring extra food when hiking in case an unexpected situation delays your return. If hiking with kids, you may need extra snacks for the journey.

Clothing

Weather can change quickly in the mountains. Always tuck rain gear into your backpack and bring along layers of clothes. Clothing is best in a wool or poly blend that wick moisture away from your skin. Check out Play It Again Sports for affordable second hand gear.

Firestarter

Waterproof matches in a water-tight container and have a dry or waterproof striker or lighter. In our area, wet kindling is common so having a candle, solid chemical fuels or balls of compressed wood chips will help.

First Aid

A basic first aid kit is a good start, you should also be prepared for more serious injuries. You can purchase hiker first aid kits at outdoor stores or put together your own. Consider taking a first aid course from the Red Cross or the Mountaineers.

Tools

Knives or a multitool and duct tape. Duct tape can fix just about anything!

Light

A light source is essential if it starts to get dark. Test your lights before each trip and carry spare batteries.

Sun Protection

Sunglasses and sunscreen are a great addition to your pack. Wearing a hat is also a great way to shield against the elements.

Shelter

An emergency tarp or space blanket can help protect you through a sudden storm or shelter you through an unexpected night outdoors.

Return To Normalcy Pierce County brokers reported a healthy jump in inventory, double-digit drops in both pending and closed sales, and the smallest year-over-year (YOY) increase in prices since June 2020. What the changes mean in general terms, are more houses on the market, longer market times, stabilizing home prices, fewer showings and open house visitors, fewer offers at one time, and more price adjustments, It’s nice to see a more balanced market for buyers, with the increase in new listings, more price reductions, and still favorable mortgage rates as factors that are creating opportunities for buyers. The return of financing and inspection contingencies are now the norm, Expecting “much will be made of the numbers that showed a significant increase in active listings” during June, Windermere chief economist Matthew Gardner said it’s important to keep things in perspective. “The pandemic heavily influenced the housing market with inventory levels essentially drying up in 2020/2021,” Gardner stated. In analyzing June’s data, he noted single family home listings in the tricounty area of King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties rose more than 144% compared to a year ago. “This still represents the fourth lowest number of listings in any June for this region since 1999.” Gardner believes the market is trending back to some sense of normalcy. “The increase in listings has started to slow the rabid pace of price gains that we have experienced. This is a good thing, not a cause for concern,” he emphasized.
