Byron's Brewery Blog

By Byron Pullen

Located in downtown Tacoma at S 21st St and Commerce St, this is your one stop shop for a slice and a pint. What started as a brewery on Vashon Island (still there) has grown to a second location, NY-style pizza by the slice and taproom in Tacoma. With a sourdough starter pizza dough and oven baked finish, this is some of the best pizza in the area. Combine that with their rotating list of 18-19 beers on tap and you’ll be hardpressed to find something you don’t like.

Camp Colvos Brewery and Pizza – 2104 Commerce St, Tacoma

Where to Experience the Best Craft Brews & Pizza

My pairing recommendation: Gig Harbor Brewing doesn’t have food, but you can swing by Steph’s Pizza on S 56th on your way and grab a Madison Ave pizza. The fire roasted peppers, spinach, bacon, feta cheese, and white garlic sauce will be a perfect complement to the crisp and light Giggly Blonde golden ale. However, if you're at the Harbor Taproom, pick up a pizza from Millville Pizza Co.

Gig Harbor Brewing and Taproom – 3120 South Tacoma Way, Tacoma With the brewery and taproom in Tacoma (S Tacoma Way) and a taproom in Gig Harbor (waterfront on Harborview Dr), you have no excuse not to visit this award winning brewery no matter what side of the bridge you’re on. With a wide variety of styles and flavors, plus rotating seasonal and limited edition versions, GHBC always has something for everyone. Make sure to try the Ghost Ship Imperial Stout and see what all that award fuss is about!

My pairing recommendation: Slice of pepperoni pizza and a pint of Pineapple Doesn’t Belong on Pizza. This aptly named beer is a New England Style Hazy DIPA, but isn’t overly hoppy or floral. It’s wonderfully smooth and tropical and pairs well with everything, but I like to keep the pizza simple and let the beer come through. There’s the age-old adage, “It’s as American as baseball and apple pie”, and while that may be true for some parts of the country, I think it’s a bit different here in the 253. Pizza and beer! I know of few things that scream PNW more than craft beer. And who doesn’t love a nice slice of ‘za with their pint!? So I’ve gone ahead and done the dirty work (read: life of pizza and pub crawling) to provide my top choices here in the South Sound for unforgettable pairings.

Dystopian State Brewing Co. 611 South Baker St., Tacoma

The winner of 2019’s Small Brewery of the Year has an open event space, tons of board games, and a sizeable tap list of both beers and ciders. Their Heliophant Helles style lager has the perfect blend of Noble hops and bready malt complexity.

Not only does Dystopian make great beer, but they also do a lot to help grow the community and foster support for inclusion, diversity, and local non-profit organizations.

Odd Otter Brewing Company – 716 Pacific Ave, Tacoma

A super fun and fresh take on modern brewing, SIG Brewing Co. offers a wide variety of brews with a twist. They also round out the Southern end of the aforementioned light rail corridor I made up earlier. Options like The Fair is Cancelled, a blue cotton candy sour; There’s Always Money in the Snow Cone Stand, a fruit punch smoothie ale; and Crystal Heavy, a strawberry lemonade hard seltzer, your taste buds can really venture out of the box and try something new! My pairing recommendation: SIG has an in house brick pizza oven, so just grab a spot and order the I Love It When You Call Me Margherita pizza and a pint of the Speech Bubbles West Coast IPA. You won’t regret it.

Honorable Mentions

Then pair that with the Frostfall pale Belgian ale once you get to Dystopian for a wonderful match.

Incline Cider House Huge variety of various cider flavors. McCallum & Sons Whisky Co. The premiere whisky and spirits bottle shop. Tacoma Wine Merchants Wine bar, tasting room, bottle shop, and wine club membership opportunities.

My pairing recommendation: On your way to Dystopian State, stop one block over and grab a St. Helens pizza to-go from Puget Sound Pizza. The spicy version of a combo will surprise you in the best way.

SIG Brewing Co. – 2534 TACOMA AVE S, TACOMA

I understand that beer isn’t for everyone so here are some alternative options should you find yourself with a different itch to scratch

Beginning in 2013, this Downtown Tacoma veteran-owned brewery helped anchor the North end of the light rail beer corridor (I just made that up) and was an early proponent of different, innovative beers. Their Ottermelon Hefeweizen is the most famous example that is a pure glass of summer sunshine. Do yourself a favor and try something new –there’s always something odd to try! My pairing recommendation: Just next door to Odd Otter is Wooden City and their wood fired pizzas. I shouldn’t need to say more than that, but I will. Their bacon pesto pizza has both mozzarella and gorgonzola plus an aged balsamic glaze. All of that paired with the Jolly Otter ESB, an English-style Extra Special Bitter (ESB) that’s both malty and hoppy, makes for one happy palate.

Re-creating a new real estate market

Back to the drawing board

In any market shift everyone experiences something different, some anxiety, fear, along with multiple levels of concern This applies to buyers, sellers, and brokers alike and feels personal to each one. From the buyer perspective, how much house will we be able to afford is a main concern; That coupled with will there be a house to buy From the sellers perspective it's the reverse, how much can I sell my house for and are there any qualified buyers to buy? This is not the market of recent times. These are new old concerns. For Brokers, setting expectations is key for both buyers and sellers in this new market.
