THE INSIDERS GUIDE TO THE WINCHENDON SCHOOL

VOCABULARY TO KNOW:

ColLab: Short for “Collaborative Laboratory.” Used to describe the two week period in January and May in which students can immerse themselves in an area of interest through an internship, independent project, travel etc.

Conference: A portion of the academic day in which students can seek further individualized help from their teachers.

AOD: Stands for “Administrator on Duty.” The faculty that is in charge of campus each night.

Global Dynamics: Our interdisciplinary course that examines important world themes and areas of the globe through the lens of English, History, Literature and Social Sciences.

Wapiti: A type of elk that serves as our beloved school mascot. The wapiti is an African word but is also an animal that is present in the New England area. This word was chosen to represent the globalization of cultures present in our WInchendon community.

Symposium: The final presentation at the end of a ColLab period in which students can share what they did and learned with the school.

“The Winch”: Nickname for The Winchendon School that students and faculty often chant at sports games or use in daily conversation.

WIS: Stands for “Winchendon Information System.” The website students and parents use to check homework, weekly grades, daily comments and general school updates.

Toy Town: Nickname for the town of Winchendon that represents the many toy and wooden ware factories that were present at the turn of the 20th century.

Community Weekend: The few times a year that students are asked to remain on campus for the weekend and not go home.

Posich: Named after an old head of school. The name of our student center in the middle of campus where students can play ping pong, listen to music, watch movies or just hangout.
