Meet Amy Hobbs, Author of 'Mother's Daffodils' Mary Cotter

For those who wondered about the author of the piece of creative writing titled 'Mother's Daffodils' in last week's Star, her name is Amy Hobbs, a Winchelsea local. The piece began life as a poem, then Amy's English teacher asked the students to develop their poems into stories, and so 'Mother's Daffodils' came into existence.

Amy moved to Winchelsea in 2010 when she was 7 years old with her parents Melissa and Tim Aisbett and siblings, and they have been a part of the community ever since. She is the second eldest of five, with one older brother (Ethan), one younger brother (Timmy) and two younger

sisters (Angelique and Helena). They also share their home with six dogs, a cat and a rabbit, plus an army of guinea pigs, birds, chickens and ducks!

Amy is currently doing Year 12 at Belmont High School where she is studying English, Physical Education, Health and Human Development and Legal Studies.

She is also a student of the Australian Institution of Personal Training(AIPT) where she is studying to become a Personal Trainer. When she finishes her secondary school education in a few months, Amy plans to complete her studies with the AIPT, become a qualified Personal Trainer for a while, then ultimately join the Police Force as a police officer.

Amy is passionate about wanting to help others, sport, music and yummy fooooood!

Annabelles first big cut to fight Cancer in memory of her grandma Jedda Lourey Annabelle is 9 years old and it doing what she can to help any way she can.

Some of you may not be aware but Annabelle has been growing her hair for a reason.

Annabelle lost her best friend and Grandma Jedda in 2017 after a big battle with cancer, she passed away at just 57 years old.

Grandma was there the moment Annabelle was born, her first grandchild and from that moment they were very

best friends, a special bond between Grandma and Granddaughter.

Whether it be going on adventures, getting grubby in the garden or walks with Izzy the dog, they just loved being together.

While Grandma Jedda was fighting her cancer she received care and treatment at The Andrew Love Cancer Clinic in Geelong, which is where Annabelle would like any funds raised from "Annabelles First Big Cut To Fight Cancer" to be donated along with her money tin she has been saving also.

Annabelle learnt that cancer affects different people in different ways which is when she decided to continue growing her hair to cut and donate for wigs, so while raising money to help with vital research and resources she will also be donating her hair as well.

Coronavirus update for Victoria As of Sunday, Aug 16th, 309 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.

In Victoria at the current time: • 3478 cases may indicate community transmission • 7671 cases are currently active in Victoria • 662 cases of coronavirus are in hospital, including 40 in intensive care • 8570 people have recovered from the virus

• More than 1,959,300 tests have been processed – an increase of 21,566 since yesterday Of the total cases: • 15,403 cases are from metropolitan Melbourne, while 1006 are from regional Victoria • Total cases include 8070 men and 8642 women • Total number of healthcare workers: 2343 active cases: 1164 • There are 2075 active cases relating to aged care facilities The total number of people receiving disability accommodation/respite services in Victoria is approximately 6,500.

Dean’s Marsh artist brings light relief with virtual Krazy Koala Kids Show A special interactive Zoom show for children 1-5 years will be broadcast live at 11am on Saturday August 15, as part of Surf Coast Shire Council’s engaging PORTAL program of creative workshops and initiatives during COVID-19.

The event will be led by Deans Marsh performing artist and puppeteer Nicholas Dacomb and will get the kids up and dancing with Teddy Bear nursery rhymes, as well as joining in for Teddy Bear hide and seek with Australia’s number one teddy bear escapologist ‘Tedini’.

“Humour and entertainment are very important right now, especially for kids who might not understand why there’s so much fear around,” said Nicholas.

“It’s an opportunity for all the rules to be off and for kids to laugh and play, which is what they do best.”

Nicholas grew up on a sheep farm in Western Victoria, but set off on an adventure travelling around Australia in a van to escape joining the family business. He joined up with a street theatre troupe in Cairns and started busking, before his first ‘real’ show in remote communities in Arnhem Land.

He’s since entertained everyone from orphans in South Africa to festivalgoers in Glastonbury, UK. “I worked on the farm from a young age and didn’t really enjoy it that much – sheep weren’t as funny an audience as the young kids are,” said Nicholas.

“The farm taught me that I needed to do something I enjoyed as a career –

He says he would like to say it was easy to pivot online following the loss of his work and cancellations of festivals due to pandemic restrictions, but the truth is that it’s been hard for him: “Doing something you love and identifying with it so much takes time to get used to it when it’s no longer possible. So, to have the chance to entertain remotely is very special for me.”

The performance has been made possible thanks to the Deans Marsh Community Cottage, helping to spread knowledge about a fabulous local performer. The show will also act as a community fundraiser for the 21st Century Anglesea Memorial Hall sound and lighting upgrade, showing community support between the shire’s creative communities.

Modewarre female cricket team If you’re female, love the open air, and have been going a bit stir crazy at not being able to play hardly any sport this past few months, then some respite may not actually be too far away.

The Modewarre Cricket Club is looking to enter its first ever Women’s team in the Barwon Women’s Cricket Competition for the upcoming 2020/’21 season. And they’re throwing open an invitation to any females (aged 15+) in the Winchelsea area to join in the fun with them.

Modda is known for having some of the best on and off-field facilities in the entire Geelong and Surfcoast regions, and also boasts a turf wicket. BWCC games are played in a friendly, social atmosphere on Sunday afternoons and are all Twenty/20 matches.

Avian influenza – low pathogenic type detected Agriculture Victoria has confirmed a second strain of avian influenza virus in Victoria, with turkeys at a property within the existing Restricted Area at Lethbridge, and another near Bairnsdale, testing positive to low pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza virus.

Low pathogenic avian influenza has a much lower effect on poultry than high pathogenic avian influenza, but both affect chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, guinea fowl, quail, pheasants and ostriches. Many species of wild birds, including waterfowl and seabirds, can also carry the virus without any symptoms.

Victoria’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Graeme Cooke explained that “avian influenza virus strains are classified into two categories according to the severity of the disease in poultry”.

“Highly pathogenic strains, like the H7N7 that was recently detected in Golden Plains Shire, cause severe clinical signs and high death rates among poultry.

However, we have now also detected a low pathogenic H5N2 strain. This typically causes much reduced clinical signs in comparison.

“This low pathogenic H5N2 was detected in a turkey flock within the recently established Lethbridge Restricted Area where poultry premises are being tested. Biosecurity officers then linked this premises with another poultry premises near Bairnsdale, where testing also found low pathogenic H5N2.”

The Victorian Department of Health and Human Services confirmed that neither viruses are a risk to the public, as these strains rarely affect humans unless there is direct and close contact with sick birds.

Workers and biosecurity officers at the affected properties are taking all necessary precautions, including wearing protective personal equipment (PPE).

There are no food safety issues identified – properly cooked poultry meat and eggs are safe to eat.

A Restricted Area near Lethbridge, and the Golden Plains Shire Control Area, remains in place also.

Dr Cooke said the detections of H5N2 were made as a result of Agriculture Victoria’s surveillance activities within the Golden Plains Shire Control Area, established following the presence of high pathogenic H7N7 avian influenza virus at two free-range egg farms near Lethbridge in the last fortnight.

“These controls prohibit the movement of birds, related equipment and products within and out of the designated Control Area unless a permit for movement has been granted by Agriculture Victoria until further notice.”

Further information on avian influenza and protective measures, including movement controls can be found on the Agriculture Victoria website. Suspicion of infection must be reported to Agriculture Victoria on the Emergency Animal Disease hotline 1800 675 888 or to your local Agriculture Victoria Animal Health and Welfare staff member.

If you have had contact with birds on an affected property and you are experiencing cold or flu symptoms, call your doctor or the Department of Health and Human Services on 1300 651 160 for medical advice.

Australia has previously experienced incursions of avian influenza viruses which were successfully eradicated.

Dr Cooke said that the outbreaks were a reminder to all bird owners, however many birds they have, to always practice good biosecurity, whether at home, sales, bird shows or race events; and especially taking small but important measures to discourage wild birds mixing with domestic birds, such as ensuring no access to the domestic birds’ food.

We have a Glenelg river canoe paddle planned for the next school holidays.

Originally we were doing this in March, but postponed it due to the lock-down.

Our hopes are that we can go in late September, but, if not, we’ll just push it back again. We WILL go. The planning and practice paddles have been done; we’re ready to go as soon as we can.

It’s something to look forward to.

After weeks and weeks, during lock-down.1, of Zooming weekly meetings, which were fun and at least enabled some chatter from kids not able to otherwise get together, we were finally allowed to get back out into the real world, and so, we did just that!

Due to the economic effect of the pandemic, Scout fees have been waived until March 2021. We hope that this will support those families doing it tough.

A few weeks later, we brought out our push bikes and tackled the 32km Bellarine Rail Trail, starting at the Geelong Showgrounds at 10am and riding through to Queenscliff. Firstly, we came together for a day hike – from the Pt Addis bush carpark along the Surf Coast Trail into Torquay. I don’t think we’d ever heard so much talking on a hike before. It was cool but clear, the outdoor scenery magnificent, especially after so many weeks of isolation. There were quite a few people, and everyone had a welcoming word as they passed. Two Scouts said ‘hello’ to absolutely everyone coming towards them!

Is Winchelsea the volcanic capital of Victoria?

Part 3

The Star has been running some articles by me on the volcanoes surrounding Winch.

To complete the series Part 3 is about the volcanoes close to Winch. Most of the names are not well known, e.g. Wood’s Hill. The hill in the paddock that used to be owned by the Wood family many years ago. There would be many eruption points that I have missed but, as I said previously, I am no expert.

Lambing Hill Lambing Hill is the quite large hill that starts at McConachy St as you are heading down the Highway. It continues to about the overpass. Prior to the Highway being duplicated there was a large quarry up the hill from the overpass. It is believed this quarry provided the stone for the Winch bridge.

Spoil from the Highway duplication was used to fill this quarry. Scattered around the paddock near the quarry site is stone debris left from when the stone was prepared for use. If you drive down McConachy St you can see a dip under the fence line where the stone was taken out by horse and dray.

Cemetery Hill Near the summit of Cemetery Hill there are some large basalt boulders. Lava

doesn’t flow up hill so I think that some where on the Cemetery Hill summit there is an eruption point.

Wood’s Hill Wood’s Hill is an example of a small eruption point that is quite common in the Volcanic Plains. Stewart Mathison drew my attention to it. How did it get its name? Well someone named Wood owned that paddock. It is about opposite Wainwrights Lane as you head out along Atkins Rd. If you look across towards the summit you will see stone sheets and rock piles that could only have got there from an eruption.

it was going to fall down. Like most Winchelsea stone the stone for bridge was seamed. A seam is the flow of lava over a previous layer that has cooled.

In the photo of a stone on the bridge you can see a seam. Part of the stone has a layer of lava that had ground water mixed with it and shot up to the air and has bubbles in it. The rest of the stone, no bubbles so no ground water. You can also see the holes the stonemasons made into the seam with star drills.

Star drills were drills designed to bore into very hard stone. You hit them with a hammer to operate them. A timber plug was placed in the hole and filled with water. The timber would swell and force the seam apart. Real high tech!

Volcanic products There have been some wonderful uses for our Winchelsea volcanic stone. Just look at our beautiful mansions such as Barwon Park and Murdeduke. St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne was built using Winchelsea stone.

Our bridge is up there with it. The bridge was built in the 1860’s. Would you believe that the Roads Board (Shire Council) wouldn’t pay out on the bridge for about 10 years because they thought

The stables were dismantled and rebuilt.

Most of the lintels over the doors were broken and had to be replaced. The art of seaming is mostly gone. The lintels were replaced with chiseled stone.

Homelessness Libby Coker, MP

New data released this week from Homelessness Australia has revealed hundreds of people are homeless in Corangamite and there is a shortfall of 2,200 social housing dwellings.

The data reveals that homelessness is not just a problem in the cities, it’s an issue right here in the Geelong and Surf Coast Region with over 200 people homeless in Corangamite alone.

As part of the “Everybody’s Home” for Homelessness Week (3 – 8 August), the interactive heat maps reveal that our community is not immune to homelessness. Libby Coker, the Federal Member for Corangamite says the Morrison Government needs to do more to address this crisis.

In the last few months, more than 7,000 people sleeping rough or at risk of sleeping rough have been provided with a bed in one of the many empty motel and hotel rooms.

“This proves if the Government really wants to, it can reduce the number of Australians sleeping rough” Ms Coker said.

Regulations for mine rehabilitation Earth Resources Regulation welcomes the tabling of the Rehabilitating Mines Audit report from the Victorian Auditor-General’s Office.

Mine and quarry operators are obliged to rehabilitate sites and fulfil their obligations to manage risks to public safety and the environment. Financial bonds are held to fund rehabilitation of sites should a licensee default on their obligations.

Earth Resources Regulation accepts the recommendations and will build on actions it has already taken to protect the community and environment from the risks associated with site rehabilitation, including financial liability.

In February 2020, the Regulatory Practice Strategy for the Rehabilitation of Earth Resources Sites was released to set expectations for site rehabilitation, addressing many of the issues highlighted by VAGO in their audit.

“Effective site rehabilitation underpins confidence in both the resources industry and the regulator – the commitments made upon approval of a project must be fulfilled when it is finished.” said Earth Resources Regulation Executive Director Anthony Hurst.

Federal recognition of Princes Highway's significance The Australian Government has added the Princes Highway from Colac to the South Australian border to the National Land Transport Network.

The move recognises the critical importance of the section of highway as a key freight link for the Victorian and National economies.

The upgrade of Princes Highway West is a long-term G21 project.

The inclusion of the road on the national network took effect from 1 July 2020, as part of updates to the network across Australia.

This section of the Princes Highway is a significant national freight link and

Replacement of 26,000 sleepers on Warrnambool line Train passengers in the state’s south-west can continue to look forward to a safe, reliable and comfortable journey following the replacement of more than 26,000 sleepers along the Warrnambool line.

The Victorian Government has invested $8.1 million to replace timber sleepers

with concrete in the section of track between Colac and Waurn Ponds.

The project started in June and has been completed in eight weeks, with crews working through the night in 10-day blocks to help minimise the disruption to passenger services.

More than 20 workers have been involved in the program, replacing around 7,000 sleepers in a 10-day block.

The sleepers were manufactured near Geelong at the Austrak factory in Avalon, supporting regional Victorian jobs at this important time.

Free biosecurity course for Aussie beekeepers The Biosecurity for Beekeepers online course is now free for all Australian beekeepers, increasing the accessibility of training which will help protect the honey bee industry from pests and diseases.

Trevor Weatherhead, Chair of the Australian Honey Bee Industry Council (AHBIC), said the course was previously only free for commercial beekeepers who had 50 or more hives with others having to pay a small fee.

“AHBIC funding allows the course to be accessed at no cost to commercial beekeepers and now Australian state and territory governments have contributed to make the course free to all beekeepers,” said Trevor.

· Identifying exotic and established pests and diseases of honey bees · Taking action after finding a serious pest or disease in your hives · Minimising the impact of pests and diseases on your hives.

“This is a great step towards improving bee biosecurity standards across Australia which will help ensure the industry’s sustainability into the future.”

The course, which takes about 90 minutes to complete, covers: · Checking your hives for pests and diseases

On successful completion of the course you receive a certificate which demonstrates compliance with the Australian Honey Bee Biosecurity Code of Practice.

The Biosecurity for Beekeepers course is delivered by PHA through funding from state and territory governments and AHBIC. The development of the course was funded by AgriFutures Australia.

EnviroSharing in our own backyards Countless hopes have been derailed in 2020, not least among them plans for single-use plastic reduction.

There are more people ordering takeout online, and sales of plastic bags, cups and wraps, along with protective gloves and masks, have soared in step with efforts to stem the spread of coronavirus.

Is there any hope left? EnviroSharing creator, Akasha Rose, says yes. She sees the requirement for us to stay home and hit pause on old ways of doing things as an opportunity to reconnect with and rebuild our local communities.

“It’s actually an invitation in disguise for us to look at what aspects of our economy supported us as living breathing people, and which kept us in a mindless rat-race to nowhere.”

“Human desire to be creative and abundant doesn’t go away just because of Covid19. We simply have to redirect our hopes and aspirations for prosperity into new channels.”

Akasha has a solution called EnviroSharing, a share-economy platform for cooperating in our own backyard. People can list sustainable, recycled, and homemade items for swapping, selling, or giving away, or ask their community for what they are looking for. People are encouraged to

maintain social distancing precautions, and also provide contactless delivery if possible, whilst still supporting their local communities.

“It’s an alternative locally focused marketplace Facebook,” Akasha says, “because in a resilient future, not everyone wants just one platform knowing everything they shop and buy and all the risks that go along with that.”

Signing up means people can search in their location, and they’ll get emails every week to tell them what’s new in their area.

Swapping, trading, and bartering might be as old as human culture itself, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t co-exist as systems for resilience in a technology age. Akasha sees the concept behind EnviroSharing as helping to take the pressure off online shopping and delivery, which can be very wasteful when it comes to packaging, fuel, and buying things that we might only use once or not at all.

“If I have something I know someone else might like to use, I can offer it on EnviroSharing and someone can borrow it and bring it back. I don’t just have to throw things out or have them gathering dust in a cupboard.”

“We can’t travel much anymore so it’s the people who live local that we need to help. People who can’t open their store

anymore, or have lost their job. They still want to be part of a working economy.

EnviroSharing has the intention of helping us recycle and reuse, and supporting each other with what we already have, so we can rely on money less if we want to and actually make use of what we’ve got.”

Akasha also believes that what she calls “sharing with purpose” will be critical to maintaining a healthy sense of community identity and maintaining mental health. “We just aren’t designed to be alone,” she says, “so the challenge now is how to connect and grow together safely.”

This isn’t Akasha’s first sustainable project. She’s spearheaded parent’s permaculture gardening groups, and also crafting groups for homeschooled families.

“Maybe I can’t travel beyond my postcode, but that doesn’t take away the need of having to keep the kids learning and engaged, or my own need to feel a sense of meaning and like I’m a contributing member in my community.
