Cheeky Kanga Tour to Halls Gap

Setting out from Winchelsea in thick fog, with Debbie at the wheel, picking up our Colac passengers, we begin our adventure.

Out through Beeac with instant sunshine.

We pass through Cressy, Lismore, morning tea at Skipton. Beaufort with its traffic lights and roadworks. Along the

Western highway to Ararat for lunch.

Next, with guide on board we tour Ararat, viewing Mt. Langi Ghiran (home of the black cockatoo) or Mt. Mistake, then J Ward with its dreadful stories. Marvelling at the treatment of some, the youngest being 13 years old. Aradale Mental Hospital closed in 1998. The railway boasting the biggest turntable in Victoria.

We go up One Tree Hill lookout, looking over the Grampians and wind farms.

On we go through Moyston & Pomonal.

Plenty of road kill, Kangaroos and an Emu. Arriving at our home for the next three days, Grampians Motel, Halls Gap. A lovely 2 course meal, with resident Kangaroo watching in the window.

Day-2 Waking up to a cool morning, we go to the dining room for a cooked breakfast with the friendly Kangaroo welcoming us.

Travelling through the bushy wonderland we come to Stawell. Back on the Great

Western Highway, we turn off towards Glenorchy. Next Rupanyup (branch hanging over water) 500 pop. Stopping at Woods Farming and Heritage Museum, admiring the large collection of tins, tractors and everything collectable. We lost the men for a bit. Well worth a visit.

Beginning our journey along the Silo Art Trail. Rupanyup silo (local Netball &

on to Brambuk National Park and Culture Centre. Dinner back at the motel.

The first few spots of rain on the windscreen as we wind our way around the base of the Grampians with 3 Black Wallabies hopping along the road.

Arriving at Dunkeld with Mt. Abrupt looking over us, we take a pit stop.

Next we visit Sylvania Park Mohair and Goat Farm with some bottle feeding the Kids. Listening to the comprehensive workings of the property. Passing the Big Koala at Dadswell Bridge, we head back to the motel to be greeted by the wildlife.

Day-3 All aboard for the mountain of rock, Elephants Hide, Reeds Lookout with beautiful views of the Grampians, Boroka Lookout where 4 young fellows had fun taking our group photos. Back down the mountain for morning tea at Halls Gap. On to the Stawell Gift Museum for an interesting talk, plenty of photos of the winners and some going around the racing track. Pickers Market a chance stop that ended us all on Facebook. Then

Day-4 After a nice cooked breakfast, packing the coach, saying good-bye to our host Brad, we turn right up past Lake Bellfield.

We start our homeward journey with a Stag Deer running across in front of us.

Next Glenthompson with a huge quarry.

Wickliffe, over the Hopkins River and on to Lake Bolac., a very large lake with plenty of birds around the edge.

Woorndoo, Mortlake for lunch at the Clover leaf CafĂŠ.

Passing Mt. Elephant, we come to Noorat, under the McKinnons bridge, on to the Princes Highway. Through Camperdown. Saying good bye to our Colac friends, then back to Winchelsea.

We thank Debbie for a great trip and Tony for checking up on us.

A pleasant trip in perfect weather, with charming company, what more could we ask?

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor, Big thankyou to Chris Windle at Garden Gate Nursery in Inverleigh for all the articles she has written for the Winch Star.

Gardeners like me have read them enthusiastically over the years. Mind you, I for one haven’t always put the advice into practice but I become enthused as I read success stories.

As we read a couple of weeks ago, Chris and her husband are closing their nursery on June 2 but until then there are many plants still available.

Chris has been a great supporter of the Winchelsea Market.

Her plants are propagated in the area so if we are average gardeners there is a bigger chance her plants will grow for us.

Her advice on market day or at the nursery is invaluable.

Thanks so much Chris.

Please keep writing as you make time to enjoy the pleasures of being a granny.

Probus trip to Telstra museum in Hawthorn

April’s Probus trip took us to the Telstra Museum in Hawthorn.

We were guided round the history of the telephone, right from Morse code to telegraph, antiquated handsets, public phones through the ages, exchanges.

The earliest mobiles which weighed a ton to carry around, and all the myriad of cabling that enables this essential service to operate.

It was a walk down memory lane for a couple of members who were ex techs and switchboard operators. Not to mention being showered with freebies of mugs and pens. A great tour.

This was followed by lunch in South Melbourne. (Full marks to our bus driver negotiating city traffic at lunch time.)

After lunch it was on to the Police Museum in the old casino building.

Another fascinating place. Exhibits including Dan Kelly and Steve Hart's iron armour used at Stringybark Creek, Squizzy Taylor's pistol.

The wreck of one of the cars blown up during the Russell St bombing, and a display of women in the police force through the ages, including the incredibly impractical uniforms of the 50’s and 60’s to the much better suited design of the present day.

Once again another wonderful day, thanks to Noreen and Les who put in an incredible amount of time preparing these days out for us.

A great day was also enjoyed by those who went to the Warrnambool Races last Monday. I haven’t heard of anyone winning their fortune on the Gee Gee’s though!!!!!

Senior Citizens News Hello everybody, On Tuesday last I attended a function representing the Winchelsea Seniors to thank Leila Forster for all the work she has done in the community over many years. There were representatives from the Rep. Society, Cubs, Tennis Club, Church Groups of St. Thomas's, Information Centre and many more who expressed their gratitude for Leila's stirling contributions to the many services and clubs in Winchelsea.

There were many little humorous anecdotes revealed much to Leila's enjoyment. This was followed by a magnificent spread of afternoon tea for

everyone to enjoy. Thanks to Jenny Bowker for opening her home to celebrate this occasion.

President Haydn On Wednesday, two of our members attended a luncheon at the Anglesea/ Airey's Inlet Senior Citizens Club to celebrate their 50th Birthday. Approx 100 attended and all were delightfully entertained by the evergreen Mr. Ben Constanza. He certainly got feet tapping and even some people up dancing.

Thanks to Alex and her team for the wonderful spread.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK POT ROAST BEEF MARINADE 2 cups water 1 cup Brown Vinegar 1/2 cup dry Red Wine 1 large Onion thinly sliced 1teaspoon Mustard seeds 1 Tablespoon Brown Sugar 3 Cloves 3 Bay leaves 6 Peppercorns 6 Juniper berries cracked ROAST PREPARATION 2 Kg Topside or other roast

(03) 5267 2019 Jean Shinners 2 Tablespoons Lard or Vegetable Oil Salt to taste 1 Onion finely chopped 1 Carrot finely chopped 1 stick Celery finely chopped 1 Leek finely chopped 1 Tablespoon flour blended METHOD Place the marinade ingredients in a large bowl or deep dish. Place the meat into the dish and marinate for 12 hours or more, turning occasionally.

Remove the meat from the marinade and pat it dry. Strain and reserve the marinade.

Heat the lard or oil in a large heavy based saucepan and brown the meat on all sides. Remove to a plate. Add chopped vegetables to the pan and saute for a few minutes. Return the meat to the pan and pour in 2 cups of the strained marinade, season with salt.

Cover and bring to the boil, then turn down the heat and simmer gently for 2 1/2 hours. Turn once during cooking and add more of the marinade if necessary.

Remove the meat to a warm platter, cover and rest for a few minutes.

Skim the fat from the surface of the sauce. Add the blended flour and stir over heat until the sauce thickens.

Carve the meat, arrange on a platter and pour the sauce over the slices. Serve the remainder in a sauce boat. Serve with boiled new potatoes and steamed vegetables. Serves 6 - 8 VARIATIONS 1/2 cup of Sour Cream may be stirred into the sauce.

For extra taste, thicken the sauce with ginger nut biscuits instead of the flour.

Soak biscuits in a little of the juices.

When softened, add to the saucepan and stir over the heat until thickened.

More importantly our charge to “...go and make Disciples...” is bearing fruit in surprising ways. Some new faces at Mass in Winchelsea, Meredith, Anakie, Inverleigh and Bannockburn. Baptism calls every week. About 60 children in the Sacramental program, some adults wanting to join us, AND we have six people going to the Proclaim 2018 conference (12-14)) because our Bishop encouraged us with words and $$ support. As part of the Victorian Budget 2018/2019, the Government will invest $21.8 million across the neighbourhood house network so more families can access the activities and services they need and want, closer to home.

Torquay’s Spring Creek Community House, Anglesea & District Community House, Lorne’s Fig Tree Community House and Deans Marsh Community Cottage are eligible for an increase, which will take their total funded hours from 20 to 25 hours per week.

The funding boost will also allow mobile neighbourhood house networkers to spend more time with individual houses to improve access to key services and activities across the system.

Domestic Animal Management Plan adopted Surf Coast Shire Council adopted its Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP) 2017-21 at its April meeting.

The plan will guide how people, dogs and cats in the Surf Coast Shire can live together in safety and harmony.

Community members were invited to contribute to the development of the plan earlier in the year. More than 420 responses were made to a survey on animal management, 32 people attended a workshop and 61 comments were received during the public exhibition of the draft plan.

Important issues identified included dog behaviour, threats to wildlife and stock, dog litter and responsible pet ownership.

A key issue identified by the community during the plan’s development was enforcement. The community engagement process indicated a willingness among community members to form closer community linkages with local laws officers.

An additional officer and beach vehicle have been identified in the DAMP to enable more patrols, education, delivery of proactive strategies, and investigate animal management non-compliances.

Pet registration fees are proposed to increase from 1 July 2018 for new

The submission includes a number of recommendations including: •

registrations and will apply from April 2019 for registration renewals. This increase will enable greater local law enforcement and increased visibility and patrols in areas not normally accessible.

Support for the establishment of a new body to oversee implementation of a Strategic Framework Plan for the Great Ocean Road;

•

Non-concession fees for de-sexed animals and working dogs are planned to increase by $23.30 in the 2018-19 financial year.

Support for secure funding sources and/or commitment to fund the delivery of the Great Ocean Road Strategic Framework Plan over a 20 to 25 year period;

•

Affirms the need to consider Council’s participation in proposals for revenue generation, as long as the revenue is directly retained by the new body (eg GOR Authority) and not diverted to State Government consolidated revenue; and,

•

Advises that it is essential councils don’t have to fund infrastructure that services a visitor base (such as coaches) for which local communities receive little benefit.

This is one of the current constraints preventing the establishment of much needed visitor infrastructure.

This increase brings Council’s fees in line with those of neighbouring council City of Greater Geelong’s to service Surf Coast Shire’s growing permanent and visitor populations.

“With our growing community, it’s crucial that we promote responsible pet ownership and respond to our obligations under the Domestic Animal Act. The DAMP will help us achieve this,” Cr Bell said. _______________________________

Surf Coast Shire joins Great Ocean Road conversation Surf Coast Shire Council will add to the conversation around the governance of the Great Ocean Road, submitting feedback to the Great Ocean Road Taskforce’s Issues Paper.

Surf Coast Shire Mayor Cr David Bell said “We know that the Great Ocean Road is currently managed by a number of different bodies. This means there can be duplication of responsibilities and some gaps.”

Council’s submission was sent to the Great Ocean Road Taskforce in April.

the reforms should be delivered. A new agreement will come into effect 2019.

Backing Craft Brewers and Distillers Craft brewers and distillers will no longer pay additional tax, allowing them to compete on fairer terms with large beverage companies.

The alcohol excise refund scheme cap will increase from $30,000 a year to $100,000, from 1 July 2019 for all brewers and distillers.

Background: Currently, draught beer sold in kegs exceeding 48 litres is taxed at lower rates than beer in smaller kegs.

Extending the concessional draught beer excise rates to kegs of 8 litres or more will level the playing field for craft brewers.

There are around 380 craft brewers in Australia, employing 2,400 people.

These are small businesses and benefit both from the increase to the excise refund cap and extended access to the concessional draught beer excise rate.

There are also over 100 distillers, supporting around 1,600 jobs. ________________________________

2018 Regional Telecommunications Review begins The 2018 Regional Telecommunciations Review will examine communication issues in regional, rural and remote areas.

Senator McKenzie said the review will commence shortly and called for all rural Australians to participate.“This is a fantastic opportunity for those in the bush to have their say on telecommunication services and the issues that affect them.”

The Committee will shortly call for submissions and will undertake public consultations in regional and rural areas later in the year. The Committee is expected to report to government by the end of September 2018.

@Victoria - time YTBC This week saw anParkemotional win for us, - Night Game Netball times YTBC by the GDFLboard finally putting 4 points on the after a tight game from start to finish. We are hopeful that this will be a turning point to move forward with implementing our game plan. Defensively we were very strong, which was set-up by Kierlie Shephard’s direction through circle defence and Sandi Carroll’s relentless pressure in wing defence. North Geelong really struggled to penetrate through our full court defence but without Eliza Cole in Goal shooter we struggled to settle in the goal ring to convert these opportunities. The patience by Casey Carroll and Meg Royal as feeders limited the turnovers in what was a tough battle for our goalers.

Best Players: Sandi Carroll, Kierlie Shephard and Casey Carroll Goals: Sarah Todd 5, Leah Mathison 9, Kendall Carracher 17

B Grade

Winchelsea 38 def North Geelong 36 Once again B Grade provided a very entertaining game for the crowd, they trailed North Geelong marginally all game and came over the top in the last quarter after a game of grinding defence finally paid off. Amanda Carroll was pivotal in the centre court both in strong defence and patient attack. Belinda Czerniawski was again strong in the goal circle nabbing 31 goals but team work was the reason for this win. The full court defence enabled young Beth ConnorSouthall to take some freakish intercepts just at the right time and a composure into attack turned this in to a score.

C Grade

North Geelong 37 def Winchelsea 25 We started off this week strong going head to head with North Geelong for the first quarter, down by one based on centre passes. Unfortunately we couldn’t keep this together for the second and North Geelong got a 5 goal break that we couldn’t peg back. Alex Stobaus was a standout in defence providing plenty of turnovers. Megan Green and Kia Orchard started to find their drive this week and deliver to the goal circle better than we have seen in the season so far.

Keep at it girls, the wins will come.

D Grade

North Geelong 45 def Winchelsea 8 Our D Grade team really struggled to score against the strong defence of North Geelong. Tilly Campana is showing some great defence in both the circle and the wings. Kim Allen was again impressive in goal keeper with great footwork and physical pressure.

Ieisha Brown backed up a strong game in 17 & Under showing the same strong drive through centre and wing attack in D Grade however we need to increase the score on the board if we want to be more competitive against sides like North Geelong.

17 & Under

North Geelong 33 def Winchelsea 17 Our girls really didn’t look like it this week and were a bit flat all game.

Georgia Bell’s consistent blocking in defence held by the tide of North Geelong’s attack. Emily Steed provides the teams safe hands always finding a team mate with her passes. Ieisha

Brown continues to find the circle with her drives into attack giving the best opportunity for our goaling combination to present. Unfortunately we were no match for North Geelong’s polished and strong team so it will be back to training to work at reducing the margin next time we meet.

15 & Under

North Geelong 33 def Winchelsea 15 The young 15 & under team showed was a much improved game by all the players. Drops in concentration in the second and last quarters really blew out the score line but it was a great start by the girls with a 5 to 8 first quarter. Their strongest quarter by far was the third which they won 8 to 5 through much better attack some amazing intercepts from Hannah Miller in wind defense.

Haylee Steed’s consistent defense made North Geelong work for every score and Courtney Spoors showed some great drive in the attacking end this week.

13 & Under

North Geelong 20 def Winchelsea 6 Our injury prone Under 13 team were left with the bare minimum players this week, three of which were still carrying overhanging injuries. This made it very difficult to compete with North strong and accurate team. The defensive combination of Hayley Atkinson and Rhiannon Nelson were strong in defense creating many intercepts and bringing the ball out into attack. Reani Mawson entered the game in the third quarter and created a lot of space in attack. Keep at it girls when you are back at full strength things will begin to turn around.
