Such has been the response to the coming of Italian-Australian international Soprano, Michelle Francis to Morning Melodies this Thursday, that there is but barely a hand full of places left at the Tea Rooms for the event.

Anyone intending to come should make sure of booking as space is limited. It is amazing that such established high profile singers are seeking to comer and perform in our town.

Michelle has chosen to sing several of the more popular soprano operatic arias – including Carmen by Bizet, Voi lo Sapete from Cavalleria Rosticana, and one from Puccini. Some gentle songs from Purcell, and Pergolesi and offerings from My Fair Lady and Les Miserable will make for a beautiful program to showcase her rich and beautiful voice. Possibly due to her Italian heritage, Michelle has a full and vivacious personality, and has captivated audiences all over Europe, and will be a crowd favourite in Winchelsea.

Once again, Philomena will provide a delicious morning tea at the Winchelsea Tea Rooms from 10.00am, with Michelle’s musical program commencing at 11.00. Local pianist, John Bumford will accompany her on the Grand Piano

Young Colac Farmer Steps Up Every time Sarah Chant steps on to her farm near Colac, she brings a piece of her father Steven with her.

Steven passed away a year ago leaving Sarah, now 26, with big boots to fill. However, he did his best to make sure she was ready to take the reins.

Sarah started the process of running the farm a year before her father died and a diary he kept continues to show the way.

“Dad had cancer for a long time so I’d been gradually stepping up,” Sarah said. “We knew it was terminal so he started keeping a diary for me and jotted down little notes of things I’d need to run the farm."

"It wasn’t easy but it was easier knowing that it was going to happen.

It wasn’t like I woke up one morning and was in charge of a 250-cow dairy farm.”

Losing her father at age 55 might have made Sarah stronger in many ways, but it still hurt.

“It was infuriating,” she said. “He was fit and strong, barely drank and quit smoking when I was a little girl because he realised how bad it was for his health. He had a healthy, active lifestyle and still got cancer.”

Sarah grew up on the farm at Warrion, 20 minutes north of Colac and had just returned from Canada when she learned of her father’s illness.

“I probably would have travelled for a couple more years but I was always going to come home on the farm,” she said. “I’d wanted to do it since I was a little girl.

“I have older brothers but they didn’t want the farm so it went to the youngest daughter. We broke tradition there.”

Sarah’s Mum Roslyn does the books and Sarah runs the farm business supported by long-time employee Joel Kirkman.

“When I was first in charge I was a bit nervous,” Sarah said. “Joel knows the run of the place so when I started making the calls I’d ask if it was the right thing and he’s say `whatever you think Sarah’. I’m getting more comfortable with it now.”

From a dairy perspective, Steven’s death couldn’t have been at a worse time.

“We got news of the milk price drop the day Dad died,” Sarah said. “I know it was terrible for farmers but it didn’t upset me that much; we had bigger things to deal with.”

The Murray Goulburn supplier has weathered the storm. “We’ve coped quite well,” Sarah said. “There was a bit of cost cutting and we’re not spending where we don’t have to, but having such a fantastic season has saved a lot of local farmers who buy in feed.

We cut more hay and silage than ever before with the good spring. If we had the milk price drop and a tough season it would have been a lot worse.”

The farm at Warrion, 20 minutes north of Colac, was purchased by Steven’s parents when he was 18.

It’s on the northern edge of Western Victoria’s dairying region but irrigation and “amazing soil” make it good dairy country.

“Growing up on a dairy farm you’re born into loving it,” she said. “It’s a job you can never perfect. You’re always learning new things.

“I love working with the cattle and rearing calves; I’m a sucker for going back to the calf shed after hours if anyone is sick. I love being outside on the farm. Having lost Dad, it’s a bit of a connection to him.”

Sarah was recently a finalist in the Best Employee category of the Great South West Dairy Awards.

Are You Ready?

Mick O’Mara, President. Winchelsea Star Sarah Henderson’s press release in last week’s Star couldn’t have come at a more opportune time.

If you didn’t read it the article was about the need for all of us to be familiar with the intricacies of going into “Care”.

Most of us, myself included, hope that it will never happen and have made no preparations.

Sure, we have written our wills and

appointed Power of Attorneys but nothing else.

Consequently many seniors start arranging their affairs as they are on a stretcher going passed the Hesse House reception on the way to being residents.

To put it bluntly, this is not ideal!

Sarah says that you can contact “My Aged Care” by phone or website. Yes

you can but unfortunately the person on the phone can only tell you the rules and not give you advice.

Similarly with the website. In my case, with average computer skills, the website simply went around in circles.

What are the “rules”? I have heard in many cases going into Care at a nursing homes requires you to sell your house.

That may, or may not, be a problem but the rules are something we should be aware of.

We also need to know where we can go to get expert advice so your arrangements are in place before you approach the reception counter.

It is not only potential recipients of possible future Care that need to consider the future.

As was pointed out at a Growing Winchelsea meeting last week it is frequently the 50 year olds that have to make the arrangements on behalf of their parents.

How can we get the advice we need to have our arrangements in place before we need them?

To help the Winchelsea Lions’ Club, Growing Winchelsea and Winch Star have decided to combine to present a function for our community re making arrangements to prepare for going into Care.

Most likely it will be a Q&A type forum where we will have a panel of people such as a financial consultant with expertise in aged care responding to questions from the audience.

Heather Wellington has agreed to be chair person of such a forum.

As well as providing information on the night it is hoped that our seniors will have a name and a face of someone who can help them with their decision making in the days/weeks/months to come.

Growing Together: Tania to Lead New Kinder which are also open for first-round 2018 applications.

Tania Harrington counts herself fortunate that she can support children to flourish in their early education.

Next year KMCC and Torquay will feature dedicated rooms for pre-kindergarten children aged between three and five years old.

Mrs Harrington will be lead teacher at the first kindergarten program at the new Kurrambee Myaring Community Centre (KMCC) in Torquay when the centre opens in the first term of 2018.

“I’m eager to start my new role at KMCC,” she said. “I think it will be the type of facility that creates a sense of continuity and comfort for families. It will be an environment where children can grow and one that is welcoming, supportive and informative for families.”

Joined by Tara Perkins, Mrs Harrington will lead the Emu and Koala classes.

“One of the best parts of my role is building positive histories with families,”

Mrs Harrington said.“Having second, third and fourth siblings return to the service from the same family creates a familiarity, an ease of communication and a shared bond.

Surf Coast Shire Council is taking kinder applications for next year, with KMCC in Merrijig Drive included in the Councilmanaged cluster for the first time. Council also manages kinders in Anglesea, Jan Juc, Winchelsea, Lorne and Torquay –

Kurrambee Myaring is an Aboriginal name meaning ‘Merry-laugh, here in this place’.

The community centre will offer allied health, occasional care, youth services and spaces for the public to hire.

Natalie White - Chiropractic Assistant at One Body Chiropractic The war on plastic is a topical point of conversation in this day and age. Across the world environmental groups are rising up and demanding that governments tax or completely ban single use plastic bags.

When you look at the statistics of what plastic is doing to our earth, it’s hard not to jump on board in support of this worthy debate.

In Australia alone, we use 3.92 billion plastic bags every year! That’s a staggering number considering single use plastic bags are non recyclable and take between 20 and 1000 years to degrade.

Plastic waste is literally choking our waterways and marine species.

Thousands of marine mammals and seabirds die every year around the world as a result of plastic litter. They either ingests the plastic thinking it’s food, or it becomes tangled around their bodies or mouths and they die from constriction and/or starvation. When the animal dies, it decays and the plastic re-enters the deadly cycle.

Australians are the second biggest producers of waste per person in the world! That’s not a fact to be proud of.

There is so much we can do as individuals to curb our plastic addiction and it starts at home.

Recycling is a good way of diverting

waste from the waste stream. It’s sorted and used to produce new products. The use of recycled materials also uses much less energy, water and resources than virgin materials. The thing with waste materials is that when they rot in the ground they produce carbon dioxide and methane. Carbon dioxide is a major greenhouse gas, which contributes to global warming, and the health of this beautiful planet we live in and consequently, our health too.

Imagine now what happens when we are careless and continuously fill and stress our bodies with toxins e.g., packaged foods, sugars, alcohol and cigarettes, a sedentary life, sitting for extended periods, stressful relationships, stressful jobs, no exercise or sunshine… the list goes on.

Our bodies will react in a very similar way as when waste is buried beneath the ground, it may be out of sight but it continues to wreak havoc! A ‘cesspit of rotting waste’ in our bodies may cause numerous adverse health conditions and a body that is functioning far from its optimal best.

The best solution to the mammoth problem with plastic waste is to limit or cease our use of it as much as possible.

The less we use, the less need there is to dispose of them in an environmentally friendly way. And the same applies with

our bodies. We need to look after them; after all we only have one body to live in!

Nutritionally dense foods along with exercise, a properly functioning nervous system, and other healthy lifestyle choices are the best way to increase our chances of living a long, happy healthy life.

National Disability Awards 2017 Nominations are encouraged for individuals, workplaces and businesses in Corangamite who have improved the lives of Australians with disability to submit a nomination for the National Disability Awards before 6 August 2017.

Local businesses hire 66 young Australians More than 5,000 young Australians now have jobs under the ‘Hire’ element of the Australian Government’s Youth Jobs PaTH (Prepare-Trial-Hire) program.

Federal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said Youth Jobs PaTH is providing a win for the local economy, with many local businesses already having taken advantage of the financial incentives available to hire more young people. “ 66 local young people who have been dependent on welfare in Corangamite and Corio have now gained employment through the Turnbull Government’s innovative PaTH program,” Ms Henderson said.

“This is a big win for those young people and a win for local businesses helping them grow.”

“I encourage more business owners in Corangamite and Corio to consider taking advantage of the Youth Bonus wage subsidy of up to $10,000 to assist taking on extra staff to help grow their business.”

Minister for Employment, Michaelia Cash, said “We understand the best form of welfare is a job,” Minister Cash said.

Businesses employing young people (15 to 24 years of age) on income support and registered with an employment services provider may be eligible for a Youth Bonus wage subsidy of up to $10,000.

Government grants open for community tree planting projects “Up to $6 million is now available for grants between $20,000 and $100,000 for tree planting projects that will put back threatened bushland and support threatened species” the Minister for the Environment and Energy, Josh Frydenberg, said.

Federal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson believes it’s a great opportunity for the many people in Corangamite who are committed to looking after our local environment and improving our green spaces.

“Green spaces connect communities to the environment and improve the liveability of our towns and cities. I encourage interested parties to apply for projects that will provide valuable benefits to the environment and for our local community,” Ms Henderson said.

Under previous 20 Million Trees funding rounds, Landcare groups and community projects across Australia have planted three million trees. With 13.4 million trees already contracted for planting, today’s announcement will ensure that the 20 million trees election commitment target is met.

The 20 Million Trees Grant Guidelines: Round Three are also now available and applications close on 15 August 2017.

The 20 Million Trees initiative is an important part of the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme.

COMMUNITY SAFETY FORUM

Gordon Cason Gordon Cason, a long-time resident of Chelsea Lodge, passed away on Sunday June 11th. Gordon, who came to Australia in the early 1950’s had no family, and he was buried at Colac cemetery following a ceremony lead by Liz Bennett last Friday June 23rd.

Gordon had a passion for singing, loved things horticultural, and had a gracious and cheerful way of greeting people.

A memorial service will be held at the Winchelsea Uniting Church this coming Friday June 30th at 2.30pm, the church Gordon attended regularly while he was able, thinking of those who were not able to get to Colac. There will be plenty of singing as part of the service, stories of him along with photos on display to give thanks for a wonderful man. Light refreshment in the church hall will follow the service.

Netball Notes After a fantastic week last week we knew our senior teams would need an enormous effort to pull off a win against the strong Thomson teams. Unfortunately we did not succeed but we certainly all gave it a good go. Lucky for the club our juniors did a little better with strong wins by both our 17 & 15 & Under teams.

This week we were outclassed by an experienced Thomson side who played a well-structured defense system which we found difficult to penetrate. When we trusted our own structures and took the hard drives through the mid court we had success but too often our young side doubted their ability. Ebony Berg converted consistently under the ring in the high scoring game, whilst Connie Royal got hands to the ball often against Thomson’s strong shooter but wasn’t able to come away with the clean turnovers. Angie Mawson was again strong and steady through the mid-court against a tough Thomson press.

Confidence was a contributing factor to such a large deficit and moving forward we will need our experienced players to take a greater leadership role on court.

Whilst this was one of our bigger losses there were plenty of positives to come out of the game against 3rd placed Thomson.

We were much more patient in attack this week creating space and making better choices. However there just weren’t as many opportunities for turnovers and rebounds as we are used too due to Thomson’s tall accurate shooter and strong driving wing attack. Beth Connors was strong at both ends of the court, while Lisa Van Halen and Bronwyn Walker provided steady heads in attack. We

never gave up and only allowed Thomson to creep the margin out each quarter.

We came out very strong this week with an 11 goal lead at quarter time. With no changes at the break one can only blame a complete lapse in concentration for Thomson to win the second quarter by a goal. With a bit of a rev up we were back at our best in the second half to take a very strong win. Ieisha Brown and Emily Steed played an excellent feeding role to Ebony Berg in the circle while Makayla Nelson let little past her in defence.

15 & Under Winchelsea 26 def Thomson 11

Third placed Thomson were just too good for our C Grade side this week. Bronte Middleton and Abbey Todd made the most of every opportunity to create turnovers in defense. They were hampered by Thomson’s strong accurate shooters who only missed 4 goals for the first three quarters. When they started to miss we capitalised in the last quarter and only lost this by 1 goal. Holly Worland provided amazing drive into the circle but unfortunately accuracy was a bit of a struggle. The girls had great passages of play but couldn’t really match the consistency of the Thomson side.

After their first win last week the girls backed it up with another this week.

Tenelle Collins was strong in defense and along with her teammates kept Thomson to a very low score of 11 goals. Mia Robertson was again our main goal shooter for the game providing an excellent target for our centre court players and her goaling partners. An early lead allowed the girls to rotate well through their nine player squad with little impact on the score line. Great work girls it seems that the team is finally coming together and let’s hope this is the beginning of some great wins to come.

With key defender Brianna Carpenter away this week we knew we would have a tough challenge against top placed Thomson. Kim Allen slipped back into the circle and did a superb job against Thomson’s accurate shooters. Jessica Loone came into the game in the second half and opened up the court with strong drives while Sarah Leyden created many turnovers in her last game before leaving the country. Overall the girls matched it with Thomson at many stages of the game showing they are a real chance should they make the top 5 but just couldn’t do it for a consistent 4 quarters.

Facing a very talented Thomson side this week there was little our team could do to stem the flow of goals. Our defensive end saw most of the play during the game with Rhianna Nelson and Grace Leeson working very hard all game to make the most of any opportunity that came their way. With accurate shooters there were few rebounds to be had but when they were there the girls pulled them in. Laura Robertson had limited opportunities to score but when she did she converted well. We need to work hard at training and take some learning from a game like this.

Blues News W.F.N.C. FOOTBALL REPORT: ROUND 11 BANNOCKBURN VS WINCHELSEA 24TH JUNE EASTERN RESERVE Last Saturday saw The Blues host league ladder leaders Bannockburn in cold and clear conditions. In both the Reserves & the Senior teams the boys would have their work cut out for them, but strong training throughout the week prepared them well for the big matches.

RESERVES:

Winchelsea 4.4.28 was defeated by Bannockburn 7.7.49.

The game proved to be a good hard fought battle, and although the Ressies lost on the scoreboard, they can be proud of the way that every player put in and worried their opponents throughout the game in one of the top sides. The team was congratulated by the opposition Coach – keep up the good work!

GOALS: Nicholas Thomas, Darcy Looker, Beau Duthie, Brodie Wilson all one goal.

BEST: Joel Karpin, Beau Duthie, Kurt Berg, Brodie Wilson, Zac Dunkley, Harry Kelly.

SENIORS: Winchelsea 8.7.55 was defeated by Bannockburn 19.12.126.

The Blues started the match very well, but were out matched by the bigger bodies and the tough unit that makes Bannockburn the League Ladder Leader yet to lose a match at this stage of the season.

To the Blues credit their 2nd half of the match was fought out well until the final siren. Coach Brendan “the Foss “Forseman praised his players after the game for their effort in the 2nd half.

Against the top sides earlier in the season the endeavour from the side dropped away after good starts. The quarter by quarter scores speak for themselves of the commitment in the players to see the game out until that final siren. The Blues continue to be ON THE RISE! A disappointing note for the Club was the numbers to hear the Coaches address after the game, in the rooms. Brenda Forssman is in charge of a great team in the making, and his post match address is always worth listening to – win, lose or draw. His positive outlook for his team especially his young players is inspirational, The entire W.F.N.C. Community would do well to show all the support they can in these early years.

Next week the Blues travel to North Geelong and are sure to do well given this improved team effort, BACK THE BLUES ON THE RISE !
