Winchelsea Bowls Club already off and away for 2021

A really fantastic highlight was Rhys Jeffs winning the Victorian Champion of Champions this week at Warrnambool. Congratulations from us all and this was from the Champion of Champion matches of 2019/20 which have been being played over the past 10 days to try to catch up. Rhys will go on to play in the Australian Champion of Champions in March, all going well with Covid 19 which has caused all these from last season to be rescheduled.

Midweek Pennant rolled off on the 5th of January and saw Division 1 travel to Apollo Bay and Division 3 travel to Colac City. Division 1 def A. Bay winning 2/3 rinks, 76 shots to 45 shots, a good win and start at the Bay. Division 3 won 1 rink and were def by City 52 shots to 86 shots.

Our small club is starting to get back into business only still a lot of restrictions on spacing food stuffs, contact tracing and sanitising but we are dealing with these as we go along.

Round 2 of Midweek 12th of January saw both teams at home. Division 1 def Camperdown winning 2/3 rinks, 66 shots to 59 shots. Division 3 won 2/3 rinks against Colac Lake but unfortunately went down in the overall, 65 shots to 76 shots.

Saturday the 16th of January saw the roll out of Saturday Pennant with Winchelsea 1 travelling to Cressy and Winchelsea 2 at home to Colac City.

Winch 1 def Cressy winning all rinks, 127 shots to 82 shots and Winch 2 drew with City winning 1/4 rinks, 95 shots all.

In the meantime the Ladies and Men’s Championship Singles have been

Window for Community Environment Grants closing soon Community groups, local governments and Traditional Owners have only a week left to apply for funding from the Wild Otways Initiative Community Environment Grants Program.

Funding of $5,000 up to $50,000 per year is available to eligible volunteer groups, local governments authorities and Traditional Owners.

Corangamite Catchment Management Authority Chair Alice Knight says, “This broad and inclusive ‘Community Environment Grants Program’ provides an opportunity to support the community to continue to deliver excellent local projects that protect and enhance the natural environments”.

“We encourage community groups, local government authorities and Traditional Owners to reach out to the CCMA and access the support available to complete their application for funding”.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to review the funding guidelines before submitting a grant application with applications closing at 5:00pm on Friday January 22, 2021.

Coronavirus update for Victoria Victoria has recorded seven new cases of coronavirus since yesterday.

Four are returned international travellers in hotel quarantine, one is an air crew member in hotel quarantine, and two are non-playing participants of the Australian Open also in hotel quarantine.

The new cases are a male in his 50s, a male in his 40s, and a male in his 30s, a female in her 50s, a female in her 20s and one male and one female child.

For the eleventh consecutive day, Victoria has recorded no new locally acquired cases of coronavirus.

The number of active cases in Victoria is now 30, made up of five locally acquired cases, which is a decrease of two since yesterday, and 25 cases in returned overseas travelers in hotel quarantine, an increase of 6 since yesterday.

From tomorrow, Monday 18 January, office workers, excluding the Victorian Public Service, can increase to up to 50 per cent of on-site worker capacity. The Victorian Public Service can initiate a return to on-site work starting at up to 25 per cent capacity.

A further increase in these capacity limits is anticipated to occur in late February but will be subject to ongoing public health advice.

Given the current low levels of COVID-19 community transmission in

Victoria, the Victorian Chief Health Officer has recommended that mask wearing is no longer necessary in certain settings.

From Sunday 17 January, masks will only be mandatory: •

on public transport

•

when riding in a ride share or taxi

•

inside shopping centres, including the retail stores inside shopping centres, such as clothing stores

•

inside indoor markets

•

in large retail stores (over 2000 sqm), such as supermarkets, department stores, electronics stores, furniture stores, or hardware stores

•

on domestic flights to and from Victoria

•

at airports

•

in hospitals

You must always carry a face mask with you when you leave home unless you have a lawful reason not to. It is strongly recommended you wear one whenever you cannot keep 1.5 metres distance from others.

Due to the reduced exposure risk and low community transmission, the Local Government Areas of Greater Brisbane - Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Redland, Logan, and Ipswich - have now been

declared orange zones by Victoria’s Chief Health Officer.

Anyone applying for an Orange Zone Permit will need to agree to the conditions including the requirement to self-quarantine, get tested within 72 hours of arrival and remain in self-quarantine until they receive a negative result.

They must also attest that they are not a diagnosed person or a close contact of another diagnosed person, are not experiencing coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms and confirm that they have not been in a currently listed red zone in the past 14 days.

Exemption applications will no longer be required if a person has been in Greater Brisbane in the last 14 days. If eligible, the person can apply for an Orange Zone Permit at www. coronavirus.vic.gov.au/travelpermits.

All areas in Australia are designated as red, orange or green zones based on the latest COVID-19 advice from Victoria’s Chief Health Officer.

The latest information and advice, including a description of the three zones, can be found at: www. coronavirus.vic.gov.au/travelpermits The Greater Sydney region (including the Blue Mountains and Wollongong) is currently a red zone and will continue to be monitored daily and updated accordingly.

Music memories from Brian Blackett Part 2 The Massed Finales were a huge success. In the first at Barwon Park, the Newtown Pipe Band marched up the gravel driveway to the assembled Massed Concert Bands. The sound was distant at first but gradually intensified.

The Pipe Band then formed itself on the beautiful Barwon Park verandah - a perfect sound shell.

Ron Crees (Pipe Major) positioned himself on the balcony above the verandah and began a solo version of "Amazing Grace" At the conclusion of that solo the rest of the pipes and drums on the Verandah for the second verse then for the rest of the arrangement the assembled Massed Concert Bands joined in.

We played some other Massed Pieces and then the Pipe Band reformed and played as they marched off into the distance. I can't remember how many pieces were played in that first Massed Finale but it gradually grew as more pieces were included each year.

One year, we decided to move to the Winchelsea Football Grounds. Massive

logistical planning and maneuvering took place and I also decided to ask neighboring schools to provide choristers to sing in a Massed Pipe/ Concert Band Finale.

Several schools indicated their interest to participate so a repertoire of suitable songs had to be investigated.

I set about searching for suitable pieces and, amongst quite a few, chose some folk songs arranged as 4 part rounds.

Come performance, with the Massed School Choirs on the tray of two semi trailers, the choirs started singing too soon so I had to stop the whole performance and I announced over the PA system that this was just like a live TV performance without a rehearsal and we would need to start again.

I addressed the assembled choirs and asked them to watch me and I would cue them when to start singing. No problems from then on. The whole performance including other pieces went over really well.

One year at Barwon Park we had over 1000 performers (nearly equally the population of Winchelsea) in 30 + bands at the Bandfest. The sound of the Massed finale that year was completely overwhelming. The warmth of the sound

He has been a veteran for 45 years from the 2nd A.I.F Service. He is a Life member of the Australian Legion of Ex-servicemen and women and is the Vice President of the Winchelsea R.S.L. Kevin had an important role in building the three Cairns in Memorial Park which have been very popular with locals and visitors alike.

To this day I still get goosebumps and the hairs on the back of my neck bristle with remembrance of the massive sound that was produced. I have been told that people returned each year to cry at "Amazing Grace" at the beginning of the Massed performance.

To get the Bandfest to operate each year a committee of 3 began to meet each month in February. Sub committees to organise advertising, catering, seating, stall holders, parking, gate etc etc were set up and then became involved in monthly meetings from August till the Bandfest in late October. A huge community involvement was needed and achieved for many years to allow the Bandfest to bring thousands to Winchelsea to enjoy listening to performance of the music and for the performers to enjoy sharing their performance with the audience.

I was extremely lucky and proud to be part of that whole massive team which brought such happiness to so many people.

Sunday January the 24th we will be back at St Thomas for a service of Holy Communion at 10am with Geoff taking the service.

Sunday January the 31st is a fifth Sunday and will be a combined service of Praise and Proclamation with the Uniting Church joining us and John Bumford playing the organ while Geoff takes the service. Please bring some morning tea to share after the service.

Mainly Music back in 2021 At the time of writing, our intention is to resume Mainly Music in the hall on Monday the 1st of February at 10am, this is assuming we have had no new outbreaks of Covid in Victoria in January and the law still allows this to take place.

If you have preschool age children and want to enrol them in this fantastic program for 2021 please ring Phil Shirley on 0407 838 256. Please contact him even if you have already been a part of the program since we will have strict covid related limits on our numbers that we will need to abide by.

The upper limit in the hall area for team, families and children combined is 54; while this should be achievable we need to observe this carefully.

We will have all Covid guidelines in place including our QR code for signing in safely and cleaning the premises. We need to make up separate bags for each family for the equipment used in the songs and at this stage are asking families to bring a cloth shopping bag with them with all of the family names on it.

Advocacy organisation, Open Doors supports many of the 340 million people who follow Jesus Christ at their own peril through advocacy, emergency support, Bible and Leadership training and prayer support.

Open Doors representative Elly Hunter from Bendigo will speak at the Winchelsea Uniting Church this coming Sunday about the real life situation of many who face jail, torture, the burning down of churches, in a number of countries in Africa, the middle East and Asia. Elly has a history of supporting those in other countries who have less than ourselves, when she set up an organisation to support women in Uganda to create small business opportunities after a visit there with friends.

Open Doors each year publishes a list of the 50 most dangerous countries in which to be a Christian, with North Korea topping the list, and surprisingly India in the top 10.

Anyone interested in attending the Uniting Church this Sunday to hear her story, and learn more about Open Doors is welcome to come along at 9.30am.

'On Barwon's Banks' On Barwon Banks was a magazine first published in 1931. It was a welfare group magazine established by the Victorian Education department. Therefore the articles are “of their day” and certainly have different opinions and are written differently to today’s language.

wonderful sight to see this huge machine digging tons of coal at a time and filling up the trucks. From the navvy the coal is trucked to conveyors and screens where it is graded and all dust removed. The graded coal is mechanically handled to the railway trucks.

In the exposed surface of the coal may be seen the method of nature which forms the coal. – sticks, bark, roots and seeds all now turned to coal but retaining their original forms. The bush which formed the coal grew perhaps more than a million years ago. There is supposed to be about 10 million tons of coal. It is interesting to watch the coal removed, and as time goes on further discoveries may be made which will reveal the condition of ages past.

BAMBRA COAL MINE

Situated seven miles from Winchelsea in the Western District of Victoria is a large brown coal mine which is now producing five hundred tons of coal weekly.

About the year 1910, a farmer named Mr Strickland sinking a shaft during a very dry season in search of water for his stock was amazed to dig into coal within ten feet of the surface. He had lived on the land all his life, plowed it and grazed his stock on it quite unconscious of the great wealth beneath him. He took a bag of coal to Geelong to be tested and it proved to be brown coal of an excellent quality. It was then soon turned into a mine and large quantities of coal were sent out to be tried in our factories and other industries.

The greatest problem was transporting the coal to the nearest railway line. This

is about three and a half miles across mountainous country and the nearest available railway station is seven and a half miles distant by road. So a powerful aerial ropeway was erected to transport the coal over hilly country to the railway line at Wensleydale.

A large steam shovel was set to dig the sand and clay off the coal which is about 25 feet down and the thickness of the coal is 75 to 100 feet thick. It is a

There is no argument that working dogs are a valuable and helpful asset to farmers and it stands to reason, if your dog travels on the back of your ute, you need to take extra care to avoid exposing them to heat stress on hot days.

While it is legal to allow appropriately restrained dogs to travel on the back of utes. Dogs being left in the sun for long periods can quickly dehydrate or even die from heat stress.

Adequate shelter, for example a fixed canopy, needs to be provided to protect tethered dogs from extreme temperatures.

A lot of utes and tray backs these days are made of metal and heat up quickly and could easily burn dogs’ paws.

New regulations introduced in Victoria in December 2019 require that when the temperature is 28 degrees or above that an area of insulating material be placed on the metal tray to protect the dog from the metal surface.

Ensure dogs kept in cages have adequate ventilation, particularly when the vehicle is not moving, and ensure they are given regular access to cool water.

The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act requires dogs travelling in the back of utes, trailers or open tray trucks to be tethered or caged in a manner that prevents them from falling from the vehicle. The only exemption is when dogs are actively working livestock.

The tether should only be long enough to permit the dog to stand, lie down and move about but not so long that it could potentially let the dog fall off the vehicle and be dragged or strangled.

Tethering dogs should always be regarded as a temporary, short term method of restraint.

In addition, it is an offence to leave an animal unattended inside a motor vehicle when the outside temperature is 28 degrees or above, so be sure to make appropriate arrangements when you are travelling with animals.

Make sure you know how to stay safe As holiday season fast approaches and we get ready for a COVIDSafe summer, Forest Fire Management Victoria is reminding people to stay safe when camping.

The first thing to do is remember to stay COVIDSafe. Please visit www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au for information on up-to-date information on how to stay COVIDSafe.

Check the weather at your destination before you leave home and consider rescheduling your visit if it coincides with stormy weather or times of high fire danger.

•

Prepare for visitor limits and book before you leave home. When you arrive at your campsite, be aware of your surroundings and camp at least 20 metres from any stream, lake or reservoir.

Trees can drop limbs, or entire trees can fall, without warning so do not set up your tent or park your car under trees. Be careful when picnicking near or under trees also.

Observe all warning signs and stay well away from trees that appear to be dead or have dead branches.

•

Make sure you keep 1.5 metres away from other campers and campfires, the length of a sedan car is a good way to mark the distance.

•

All native plants and animals are protected. Do not cut down or damage standing trees or vegetation and please don’t feed wildlife.

•

•

Always let someone know before you go. You can visit the Victoria Police website for a trip intention form in case of an emergency.

•

Know the campfire safety rules before you head out and stick to them. In national and state parks, campfires and barbecues may only be lit in the designated fireplaces provided and you must bring your own firewood.

Campers in state forests must build a trench at least 30 centimetres deep around campfires and can collect fallen wood less than a metre in length for their use.

All campfires must never be left unattended and need to be extinguished with water, not soil, as fires can still smoulder under soil.

If a fire is cool to touch, it is safe to leave.

It is illegal to light a campfire on a day of Total Fire Ban, when fires are likely to spread rapidly and be difficult for firefighters to control.

Keep our state forests and national parks as beautiful as you find them by not littering. There are usually no bins, so ensure you take your rubbish home – whatever you bring into the forest, you must take out.

Under the Forest Act 1958, on-the-spot fines of $496 can be issued to people breaching campfire safety rules. The maximum penalty for lighting a fire during a Total Fire Ban is $39,652, two years in jail or both.

From nursing to farming what a career change!

When enrolled nurse Angela Dunstone moved from Canberra to her partner’s hometown Albury, not in her wildest dreams did she imagine changing her career to the dairy industry.

After four years of shift work at an Albury aged care facility, Angela felt disillusioned with her work-life balance.

“I wasn’t really enjoying myself; there was not much time to spend with my family or my partner,” she said. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I saw a job on Gumtree for a farmhand, with ‘no experience necessary’.”

Until landing the dairy farm job, Angela had never met a cow, so she definitely had ‘no experience’ and no idea what to expect.

“I had no farming background; it was a big learning curve to be milking, feeding, irrigating, fencing and spraying weeds,” she said.

Despite needing to leave Albury at 3.30am to start at 4.30am, Angela enjoyed the fresh air and variety of farm tasks. However, she felt “thrown into the deep end” when the farm manager left after six-months and the business was managed remotely.

“It was just at a time when I wanted to learn and know more,” Angela said.

Having completed a Certificate IV Agriculture at Wodonga TAFE, Angela

learned as much as she could from the farm’s agronomist and veterinarian over the next two and a half years.

I wanted to learn more.

While keen to stay in the industry, she eventually decided “it wasn’t worth the 45-minute drive on a dark, windy road” to work.

She asked her agronomist and vet contacts for advice on a dairy farm closer to Albury, and applied for work at Hermitage Dairy at Kergunyah South.

At first Angela was assistant pasture manager but that changed to assistant herd manager when Stuart recognised her interest in animal health.

During her interview with fifth-generation farmer Stuart Crosthwaite, Angela emphasised her desire to learn: from the outset, it was obvious she had come to the right place.

“Each of us knows what jobs we have to do; if anyone has a question about the cows or animal health, they come to me.

It gives me a sense of ownership in my area, and if I need advice I can ask Stuart,” Angela said.

“It was very structured,” Angela said.

“I had basic knowledge but was self-taught, and Stuart guided me in the right direction.”

“It makes me feel like I am valued and valuable to the business; I’m not just a number or just an employee, but I matter.”

Fast forward two years and Stuart, who is also founding chair of dairy cooperative Mountain Milk and is currently completing the ARLP program as a Gardiner Foundation scholarship recipient, continues to inspire and support Angela.

Living in a farmhouse on the property with her partner, “who now drives 30 minutes to work in Wodonga”, Angela is eying a long future in the dairy industry.

“Stuart is a great teacher with great knowledge that he is willing to share; he pushes me to learn and take on more responsibility,” Angela said.

“Good leadership and support networks are vital to attracting and retaining newcomers to the industry,” she said.

“Without the support of a good team, staying in the industry and being successful would be so much harder.”

Major West Gate Freeway closure for six weeks Motorists are urged to plan ahead and allow for an extra hour of travel as West Gate Tunnel works ramp up.

The West Gate Freeway will close in both directions between M80 Ring Road and Grieve Parade until 5am Monday, 11 January as crews demolish the overpass before rebuilding it to allow for two extra lanes each way.

Inbound and outbound West Gate Freeway traffic should detour via Geelong and Millers roads while motorists travelling from the M80 Ring Road to the West Gate Freeway should detour via Boundary, Little Boundary, Millers and Geelong roads with delays of up to 60 minutes expected.

Crews will then spend six weeks from Sunday, 10 January reconstructing

bridges and making room for extra lanes on the West Gate Freeway at the M80 Ring Road interchange.

During the works, the ramps connecting the Princes Freeway and Geelong Road, as well as the M80 ramp to the West Gate Freeway inbound will remain closed. Motorists are advised to plan ahead and allow for an extra 30 minutes travel time.

Have your say in shaping Victoria's biosecurity Biosecurity plays a big role in protecting Victoria’s economy, environment and way of life, and Victorians are invited to share their views on biosecurity through an online survey.

The Understanding Victoria’s Biosecurity System Survey, from Agriculture Victoria, seeks to understand attitudes and knowledge of Victoria’s biosecurity system to improve how we prepare for and meet future biosecurity challenges.

Biosecurity Services Executive Director Katherine Clift said farmers, businesses, industry groups and community members were invited to contribute.

“The agriculture sector contributes over $14 billion to the Victorian economy, supporting essential food supply both here in Australia and overseas, and providing thousands of jobs,” Dr Clift said.

In 2020, six farms tested positive for three different strains of avian influenza in Victoria. This was the largest avian influenza outbreak recorded in Australia and the most significant biosecurity event in Victoria for the last 20 years, highlighting the importance of a strong biosecurity system.

“Timely response is critical to rapid eradication of the disease, minimising the impacts on the poultry industry and maintaining trust and confidence of consumers and trading partners.”

Over the past 20 years, Australia has responded to biosecurity incursions, including Varroa mite, citrus canker and equine influenza as well as prepared for threats such as foot and mouth disease and African swine fever, all of which can have a significant economic impact.

“Managing biosecurity risks is increasingly challenging, as international and interstate migration, climate change, tourism and increased movement of goods all contribute to the risk of new incursions.”

Dr Clift said government, industry and the community needed to work together to prepare for, and respond to, current and future biosecurity risks.

“Everyone has a part to play in protecting Victoria from the impacts of pests and diseases,” she said.

“You can contribute to biosecurity by seeking advice when you see something unusual and reporting it, implementing good biosecurity measures in your business or on your property, working with your community to manage pests such as gorse, Queensland fruit fly or

rabbits and practicing good hygiene while travelling.

“These simple steps can help protect yourself and those around you, and keep our beautiful bush and bountiful farmland free from pests and diseases.

“Taking part in the survey lets you have your say on issues ranging from potential biosecurity threats and impacts, to where you like to get your information from and what could be improved.”

The results from the survey will be published online and will inform the development of future biosecurity initiatives.

“Your participation in the survey will help identify how we strengthen Victoria’s biosecurity system.”

This survey comes as part of the Victorian Government’s unprecedented $143 million investment into Strengthening Victoria’s Biosecurity System as part of the 2019-20 budget.

The online survey takes about 15 minutes to complete, and is open for submission from Wednesday 13 January until Thursday 11 February.

Helping farmers to expand and diversify The Government is investing $72.7 million to help farming, forestry and fishing exporters in Victoria to expand and diversify their export markets in 2021 as part of its Agri-Business Expansion Initiative.

The package includes: •

$42.9 million to scale up support to over 2,000 agri-food exporters each year through Austrade’s services.

Austrade will also work with industry bodies to deliver targeted advice and trade missions (where possible) to help exporters grow in existing and new markets.

Can you open your heart to a new cat or rabbit?

RSPCA Victoria has hundreds of animals urgently needing new homes. The New Year New Home promotion running from Friday 8 - Monday 11 January 2021 is reducing adoption fees for adult cats and rabbits to $21 to help find them loving homes.

As many Victorians commence the new year with the ongoing option to work from home, for those considering adding a pet to their family, now is the perfect time to adopt.

RSPCA Victoria’s Dr Liz Walker, says the adoption campaign is the perfect chance to give a little love to the animals who aren’t always in the spotlight.

“Cats and rabbits are often misunderstood creatures. We hope New Year New Home encourages the adoption of these terrific animals so more people can experience the joy, companionship and affection they offer,” says Dr Walker.

NEW YEAR NEW HOME FAST FACTS

“We’ve found these types of adoption campaigns to be very successful in the past. This is a perfect time of year to welcome a new animal into your home.

Many Victorians will spend the first part of January on holidays, giving them lots of time to help their new family member settle in.”

Adoption fee for an adult cat (five months and older) is usually $120 but it will be reduced to $21 during this adoption promotion.

The adoption fee for a rabbit is usually $68 but it will be reduced to $21 during the adoption promotion.

The adoption process will not change during New Year New Home, apart from the reduced cost. The process is tried and tested, based on criteria such as space, work schedules and whether there are children or existing animals in the home.

Adoption remains via online application.

Visit rspcavic.org/adoption to view and apply for animals available for adoption.

Adoption fees for senior cats (over 10 years) and senior rabbits (over 5 years) will be waived as per the normal RSPCA adoptions process.

Studies have shown that there is no difference in the care provided for an animal whether adopted through a fee-waiver program or for a fee.

All cats and rabbits adopted from RSPCA Victoria are desexed, microchipped and vaccinated to ensure they are ready to start a happy new life and a happy new year.

The Australian Labor Party – Victorian Branch has been re-registered as a political party under Victorian electoral law.

As required by section 58A of the Electoral Act 2002, the party applied for re-registration on Thursday 8 October 2020.
