Gardening at Winchelsea Primary School At Winchelsea Primary School we have a subject called Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden.

We plant food and the food we plant gets cooked in the kitchen. We have sheds that we have been upgraded by adding hooks, now we hang our equipment on the walls. We also compost food and use it in our garden to help our plants grow nicely. We also have a lot of volunteers to help out.

Without these volunteers our programme would not be impossible.

kitchen first thing we split up into our groups and cook the recipes and make great meals. We then eat the food. Then when we finish eating the food we clean up the mess. We also give some of the food to the teachers if they're good.

Public Notice Cape Otway Road works

Gherang Road to Considines Road Council is currently completing safety upgrade works (road rehabilitation, shoulder sealing/guardrail and delineation) on Cape Otway Road from Gherang Road to Considines Road.

The $2.1 million project covers approximately 5.4km.

Council has put works on hold due to poor site conditions for construction. A wet autumn followed by a cold June has impacted the water table level and affected the integrity of the pavement and shoulder material for rehabilitation and sealing.

While works may look complete, there are a number of important items unfinished. This means the works zone will remain under traffic control during this period.

Traffic management of this area will be constantly reviewed and adjusted until the contractor returns to finalise works in September/October.

Council thanks all road users for their patience as we upgrade and improve Cape Otway Road.

Flags There has been much discussion in these pages recently about the rainbow flag, but I would like to raise some issues relating to the popularity among some folks in and around Winchelsea of flying an Australian flag on their property.

Whilst such displays make many people somewhat uncomfortable for reasons I will go into later, I would first like to raise the fact that many such flag-flying folk seem to be oblivious to the protocols involved in displaying the Australian flag.

For example, people don't seem to realise that the Australian flag is only supposed to be flying at night if it is illuminated, and should otherwise be lowered at dusk and raised at dawn.

And importantly to the environment as well as said protocols, flags should not be allowed even to fade, much less deteriorate to the point of shredding (thereby leaving pieces of polyester litter to add to the planet's massive problem with plastics), yet as most of the flags people fly appear to be Chinese made flags sold as “novelty flags” and not intended for outdoor use, they start to shred within weeks of being hung.

Furthermore, when an Australian flag has faded or otherwise visibly deteriorated and thus should be taken down, said protocols decree that it should be “destroyed privately and in a dignified way such as cutting it into small unrecognisable pieces then putting it in the normal rubbish collection” - is this protocol being followed by all of those who fly such?

Now to why national flag flying makes myself and many others uncomfortable, other than their contribution to the plastic litter problem. As Vicky Allan of Scotland's 'The Herald' put it in August last year, “the problem with flags is that, whatever else you may project onto them, they're associated with a particular type of patriotism, an 'us and them' view of the world. Flags belong to a kind of theatrical staging of power play and aggression.” Many people find it hard to disregard the connotations of

national arrogance and superiority surrounding flags, characteristics illustrated here in Australia by the use of the flag by some during the Cronulla riots in 2005.

Whilst the Australian flag might not have the strong association of the British flag with colonialism, including the occupation of this land and the massacres, dispossession and subjugation of its original inhabitants under the farce of 'Terra Nullius', it nonetheless does have the Union Jack in its top corner, and came into existence at a time when the original owners of this land were still considered to be part of the flora and fauna, could not vote nor own land, and when many of whom were being treated little better than slaves.

As well and to finish, when the planet that we all depend upon for existence is facing such perils from environmental pollution of all types (caused largely by the unfettered greed of megacorporations and the politicians that inexplicably yet evidently serve them), isn't it time that we began to think beyond the narrow viewpoints of “patriotism” and nationalism to “earthism”?

Several weeks ago I noticed that one of “petrol” bowsers at the Winchelsea BP Service Station had been equipped with OUT OF ORDER signs so no problems I'll continual getting my petrol from Geelong it’s cheaper anyway so that's alright

Each week we are reminded that the Star depends on local residents to send in news, information and articles.

Then last Saturday week I went down to fill the work Ute up (Fuel Card) so no cost to me only to see someone had had a bad case of brain fade and pulled the diesel bowser out of the ground so no diesel still no big deal as there are plenty of other outlets around about But then I got to thinking that there are a lot of people that rely on that single bowser for their fuel i.e. local farmers and the smaller road transport operators and even mums and dads now with diesel powered family cars becoming more popular so where do they go for their fuel Inverleigh being the closest with Waurn Ponds and Colac further away I know that I'm going to be called a bit of a bastard when I say this but I'm calling on all the local people that don't need to use this local business to boycott it because this business is treating us with absolute distain by not getting these facilities repaired Yes I know that I can go elsewhere and I promise you that I will be doing so both now and in the future Yes I know this action may see a cutting back in hours to some people and for this I am truly sorry but that must be already happening As the situation continues I'm shore BP doesn't give a rats because their losses will be covered by someone's insurance but will they cover your time and costs No I think not I then thought about contacting BP but we all saw what they did down in Lorne so I now believe that it's time that some sort of civil action takes place to force the owners hand Yours Brian Bohan

In last week’s issue (25/7) there was an interesting and well written story ‘Being Scammed’ on p24, a topical article from Wendy Gravolin on p29 and information on the Barwon River on p20.

On pages 4,5 & 7 there were press releases about Canadian forest fires, the Ocean Road Memorial Arch consultation committee and 2 from the VFF (Victorian Farmers Federation) all of which had little relevance to Winchelsea or the Star readers.

The front page was certainly an important local story, but I fear that anyone casually scanning the first few pages of the issue could well surmise that there was little more of local relevance in the issue. Surely if locals have made the effort to supply articles to the Star, their effort could be recognised by more prominent placement of the articles towards the front of the paper. This would help to encourage more people to respond to the editors’ weekly call for contributions.

Birthday Time for Winchelsea Star Next week’s edition of the Winchelsea Star will be the Star’s 40th Birthday issue.

Forty years since the Star first appeared!

To mark the occasion next week’s edition will contain a souvenir replica of the first Star. It can be removed and treasured.

Our normal edition will have our usual reports and community items plus contributions from people who were involved in bringing the Star about or, in some cases, their descendants. Three of the first committee are still in the world of the living. Five advertisers from the first edition are still advertising with one advertiser still the people from 1977.

Many of the contributors from our first edition are able to contribute to next week’s Star. Just think, next Tuesday you may discover who the Barwon Bunyip is.

For our Birthday edition the Star committee has decided waiver our usual charge. To cater for the increased demand we will print an extra 200.

However, to ensure each household obtains a copy, please take one per home unless you have a legitimate reason for more.

An Opportunity to Write the Surf Coast Arts Trail 2017 Writers of all ages and abilities are encouraged to participate in the inaugural Words from the Surf Coast Arts Trail project.

Running alongside the popular Arts Trail on 12-13 August, this new initiative will provide writers with a unique opportunity to actively engage with local artists and use their work as a source of inspiration for creative writing.

“Over the past six years, the Arts Trail has allowed more and more people to visit studios, galleries and other venues across Surf Coast to see artists at work, talk to them and explore their collections," said Writers Victoria’s Surf Coast Regional Ambassador Gail Chrisfield.

“This year sees the introduction of a literary element with Writers Victoria encouraging anyone who loves to write to get out and about over the Arts Trail weekend, seek out a piece of art they find inspiring, take a photo and produce a piece of writing about it.”

Participating writers are then welcome to present their words and photos at a free Words from the Surf Coast Arts Trail event at the Surf Coast Arts Space in Anglesea on Thursday 31 August 2017 from 6.30pm.

Prizes will be awarded for the best ‘open mic’ entries, with the event also featuring curated wordworks by local authors Mark Smith, Miranda Luby, John Bartlett and Janet Brown.

Hot Cooked Rice

1 boiled Chicken, cut into pieces

Chopped Parsley

9 cups Water 3 Onions sliced 1 clove Garlic crushed 1 Tablespoon chopped Parsley 1 Bay leaf 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning dash Cayenne Pepper 12 Leeks sliced white part only

1. Put the chicken in a large saucepan with water, 2 teaspoons salt, 2 of the 3 onions, celery and carrots. Bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, covered for 30 minutes.

2. Chop the remaining onion and saute with the garlic and apple in the oil for 5 minutes in a small saucepan.

6 medium potatoes, peeled and diced Pepper 1. Put one tablespoon of salt and all ingredients except chicken, potatoes and leeks in a large saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until tender.

2. Remove the skin and bones from the chicken and cut into bite sized pieces.

Add the chicken meat, potatoes and leeks to the saucepan. Cover and cook for 30 minutes or until the potatoes are cooked.

3. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Serves 8 - 10

3. Blend in the flour and the curry powder and add to the garlic and apple mix. Add 1 cup of broth from the chicken and simmer for 10 minutes longer.

4. Slowly pour into the large saucepan with the chicken. Mix thoroughly and simmer for 30 minutes. Add cayenne, salt and pepper to taste.

5. Put a serving of rice into each soup bowl, pour soup over it and garnish with parsley. Serves 6 - 8.

Trust issues over Labor tax plan

A new plan to overhaul the federal tax system, flagged this week by Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, could risk hitting primary producers who use family trusts to manage their incomes during leaner years.

The Victorian Farmers Federation slammed the proposal as a political ploy designed to attack corporations with little thought for smaller operators who could be caught in the crosshairs.

The Tax Institute reports that 85 per cent of the 823,000 trusts currently registered belong to small operators, including an estimated 27,000 farm businesses.

“Farmers rely on trusts because we operate in an industry with highly volatile returns and need to manage the tax burden in good and poor years,”

VFF President David Jochinke said.

“They are our safety net.”

Mr Jochinke said many farmers also used trusts as a valuable tool to secure the next generation of farmers.

“I have a trust, which I use to help with succession planning. Trusts allow assets to be used across generations, and this is why they need to be preserved,” he said.

With the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) tipping total farm production to reach $59.9 billion in 2017-18, Mr Jochinke said any move to add more regulations to the tax system would undermine the viability of the farm sector.

“Farmers require a tax and regulatory mechanism that facilitates their growth and future prosperity,” he said. “Any

proposal to increase taxation to the family trust system is not the answer.”

The Opposition has not officially unveiled its taxation policy, but the farm sector was not consulted before Mr Shorten and Labor Treasury Spokesperson Chris Bowen publicly floated the idea of wide-ranging reforms that could involve changes to the family trust system.

Mr Jochinke said any public discussions around tax reforms that could hurt small business were cause for concern.

“We cannot afford another tax debacle like the mining tax and we can’t have the endless ratcheting up of revenue raising measures,” he said.

“Let’s be clear: every extra tax dollar raised from agriculture takes direct revenue out of rural communities. No ifs, not buts.”

'Rural Women Uncovered' event Don’t RURAL women will come together to help raise funds for Ovarian Cancer research at the fifth annual Rural Women Uncovered event on Thursday September 14 at Creswick.

The event, spearheaded by the Victorian Farmers Federation, aims to encourage delegates to celebrate their connections to regional Victoria, and will focus on creating healthy business practices through the use of stories, home-grown women inspiring their communities and the influence of voice.

Special guests, including TedX speaker Sandy McDonald, NSW Rural Women finalist Hayley Purbrick and AgTech entrepreneur Ros Harvey, will take centre stage.

“The simple fact is rural women have to be many things – farmers, financial wizards, trade negotiators, marketers and sometimes health care workers,”

Ms McDonald said.

Men's Shed Matters The next of the monthly meetings of the Winchelsea Men's Shed will be on this Wednesday, August 2nd at 10.00am.

Thanks to Rob Cameron from the Bendigo Bank for chairing our AGM last month. Congratulations to the continuing and new members of the committee for the coming year. Elected were: Co-ordinator – Ray Atkinson, Secretary – Graham McPadden, Treasurer – Rob Clark, Publicity Officer – John Bumford, Community Garden Supervisor – Clive Milne, Workshop Manager – Stuart Forbes, and committee members – Bill Walters and Ray King. Thanks to outgoing members, particularly Treasurer Colin Mayman for his enthusiasm and passion for each project he undertook.

A great trip last month investigated the incredible Point Cook Museum with planes of all vintages, shapes and sizes.

There is ongoing discussion with the

issue of wall plaques to commemorate deceased members of the Shed. It is pleasing that Winchelsea was chosen as a preferred applicant to make 40 toy boxes and 40 toy trucks of different designs and sizes for the Torquay Kindergarten. We are getting quite a reputation for the work done in the Shed.

The Shed has been called upon to create a Memorial Structure at Wurdale Hall in memory of the late Russell Holloway, a member of the Shed.

Some of the energetic men helped dismantle an aging wooden fort at the Occasional Child Care Centre at Winch House prior to the installation of a new safer structure. Discussion will take place on our next bus trip. Ideas gentlemen? The Colac Aldi BBQ’s continue each month, although a bit quieter in the winter months. The constant need for fire wood has seen a supplement to our income with the supply of bags of timber off cuts.

Illegal rubbish dumping on Surf Coast leaves $10,000 bill Construction waste, old cars and mattresses have been among the hard rubbish dumped in forests and parks along the Surf Coast over the last 12 months.

“We’ve removed five cars which were dumped across the Anglesea Heath and the Great Otway National Park.”

The problem of illegal dumping saw Parks Victoria and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) spend close to $10,000 on removal costs last financial year.

“In addition to being a fire hazard, tyres contain toxic chemicals which can leach into the environment.”

Parks Victoria Surf Coast Area Chief Ranger Peter Hay said: “Our parks and forests are maintained for the enjoyment of the community, and it’s disappointing that an inconsiderate few are treating these areas as a dumping ground.”

“In the last 12 months, valuable staff time has been used disposing of a significant amount of rubbish, from construction waste and car parts to mattresses and microwaves.”

“Tyres are often discarded in our forests and parks which is a cause for concern.”

“Another threat to the environment is the green waste that is often discarded around Anglesea, Aireys Inlet and Lorne.”

“While taking our staff time to collect, transport and dispose of the green waste appropriately, there’s also the potential for this waste to introduce weed species to the natural environment.”

DELWP Senior Forest Management and Roading Officer Craig Clifford said: “The money that is being spent on removing rubbish, could be far better used for maintaining and improving facilities in our parks and forests.”

“Leaving rubbish in our forests and parks shows no regard for other visitors, our staff, native animals and the environment.”

“Our staff monitor known hotspots and work with Victoria Police on any information that can be provided by the public.”

“If you see any suspicious behaviour or witness an illegal dumping, please report it to the EPA on 1300 372 842, or to our Customer Service Centre on 136 186.”

Anyone caught littering or dumping in National Park or Forest Park can face a $317 on-the-spot fine, which increases if they fail to respond to Parks Victoria or DELWP notifications after the fact.

Offenders can also be prosecuted in court under Section 45E of the Environment Protection Act 1970, which carries a maximum penalty of $6,342.

Probus goes Cuckoo Last week Winchelsea Probus Club made the treck up to the Dandenongs to visit the Cuckoo Restaurant to celebrate Christmas in July.

The Cuckoo is a quirky Swiss style restaurant decorated with cuckoo clocks, beer steins, brassware and stags heads and of course at the moment Christmas decorations. Roaring log fires welcomed us in from the typical Christmassy weather normal for winter in the Dandenongs, I am sure it almost snowed.

Food wise the place is wonderful, an all you can eat buffet with entrees, seafood, roasts, salads and delicious

desserts. When we sat down,big silver tureens of delicious cauliflower soup and crusty bread were brought to the tables. There was no excuse to go home hungry.

The atmosphere is homely and the seating a little snug! Plenty of groups from all over, some other Probus Clubs etc.

A Tyrolean dressed gentleman entertained us with accordion playing and singing during the meal. Another singer joined him but didn’t seem to want to hang around for long, there were Christmas song sheets on the tables but that didn’t happen. All the waitresses were dressed like Heidi, Santa even made a brief appearance handing out bags of lollies randomly.

All in all a fun day, even to the group of young Asian people outside who seemed to be fascinated by the open/ closed sign, which was like the doors on a cuckoo clock where the cuckoo pops out of. Taking heaps of selfies of course.

The trip home as usual was quiet apart from the snoring. Some of us, who take the bus to the hub contemplating another meal that night. Oh,it’s a hard life!!!!

Our thanks once again to Noreen and Les for organising another great day out.

Living La Vida Salsa

In Aireys Inlet

Cuba is coming to the Surf Coast next weekend, with the inaugural ‘Salsa Sunday’ event at the Aireys Pub on Sunday, 6 August, as part of Love Winter in Aireys.

Anyone keen to try Salsa can join in, with a dance lesson at 1.30pm run by professional instructors from Geelong’s La Vida Salsa dance club, followed by an afternoon of Latin music and grooves with quirky Latin big band ‘Los Locos’.

Sangria, mojitos and paella are also on the menu to ensure the full flavours of the Caribbean can be experienced.

Club La Vida Salsa arranges professional instructors from Melbourne to teach dancing at their club every Monday night in Geelong.

“The dance style we teach is called Cuban Salsa, or ‘Street Latin’, which is very different to the formal, rigid salsa dancing you see in Dancesport competition,” explained Sonja Sanderson from La Vida Salsa.

“Street Latin is literally, the street dance, originating from urban Cuban neighbourhoods, where locals regularly dance in the streets,” she said.

“Driven by the rhythms and roots of Afro-Cuban music and dance culture, Cuban salsa is an informal dance style, which is very grounded and fluid. Our playlist is made up of traditional Cuban salsa/folk songs and contemporary Latin artists, who typically often mesh other Afro-Latino music influences.

“We’ll be bringing many of these moves to Aireys Inlet, where everyone can have a go and experience the joy of salsa dancing.

“Our motivation is purely to share the ‘salsa love’ and provide an opportunity for people to come together and have fun.”

Love Winter in Aireys continues through August with a range of other exciting events and activities.

An action-packed weekend is scheduled for 12-13 August, with the annual ‘Wintersong’ night of music at the Aireys Pub, a ‘Ladies Long Lunch’ fundraiser at Onda Food House, a film screening of the award-winning ‘Freedom Stories’

about refugees who have come to Australia by boat, and to top it all off, impressive art installations by Aireys Inlet primary school children displayed around town to support the Surf Coast Arts Trail.

The following weekend, on Sunday 20 August, the Aireys Inlet Tennis Club hosts a community round-robin tennis tournament for adults, while those seeking a more relaxing activity can join in the women’s winter retreat at Aireys8 Coastal Retreat on Saturday 26 August.

There are also daily tours operating at the Split Point Lighthouse and live music every Saturday night at the Aireys Pub. Love Winter in Aireys is a three-month festival presented annually by the Aireys Inlet Tourism and Traders Association, with support from the Surf Coast Shire, attracting thousands to various events staged in town over the winter months.

Corangamite residents can now sign up as organ donors in record time In the lead up to DonateLife Week (30 July – 6 August),I encourage Corangamite residents to sign up as organ donors through the new online registration process.

A minute or two of your time could save lives and make a lifetime of difference for up to 10 people needing organ or tissue donation.

Now, almost instantly, you can register to become a donor on a mobile phone, tablet or computer.

I understand just how much difference organ donors can make to the lives of Australians in need of a transplant. That is why I recently became an organ donor myself.

Across the nation last year, 503 deceased and 267 living donors contributed to a record 1,713 people receiving donated organs.

Research shows that more than two-thirds of Australians are willing to become organ and tissue donors but only one-third have taken the step of joining the Australian Organ Donor Register.

With around 1,400 Australians currently waiting for a transplant, I’m asking everyone in Corangamite to join the register as soon as possible.

Jump online, type in the words ‘donatelife’ and ‘register’, and sign up using the simple, five-line form.

I would also ask that while you’re doing it, you share your decision with your loved ones.

Along with the new online registration form at www.donatelife.gov.au, Australians can still join the Australian Organ Donor Register online via the myGov, Medicare Express Plus and Department of Human Services websites, and by submitting printed forms.

Dreaming of a plastic free planet ‘Enviro Week at One Body Chiropractic’ Written by Natalie White Chiropractic Assistant at One Body Chiropractic in Winchelsea.

It’s officially the end of Plastic Free July and I have to admit, I feel a little sad. I know it sounds silly but so many wonderful, positive things have come out of this initiative and I only hope that it continues well into the year and beyond.

What did you learn during Plastic Free July? What goodies did you excitedly discover that you COULD actually recycle, giving them a chance of being made into a new product, instead of throwing them into the bin: ensuring they are buried deep beneath the ground, polluting our beautiful country!?

Ok I’ll start with me. While I already have my own reusable coffee cup, have a compost bin set up at home and recycle every conceivable thing possible, I have gone above and beyond which is exciting for me! I now buy everything possible in bulk at Valerie’s Pantry, which is near me in Belmont. I take my own jars in, they tare them and off I go. I now recycle my soft plastics, which I’ve found a lot of people aren’t aware of this service.

Coles in Waurn ponds have a REDcycle bin where you can take your plastic shopping bags and any other plastics that are ‘scrunchable.’ I have also started buying a lot more consciously, if there is an alternative food I can purchase that is plastic free, I’ll go for that option, or I’ll have a go at making my own version. Challenge accepted!

Improved mobile coverage for Yeodene I am thrilled that mobile phone coverage in the Otways has taken another step forward following the switching on of a new mobile phone tower in Yeodene.

Yeodene residents and motorists travelling between Colac and Forrest have suffered from poor mobile communications for far too long. That’s why I fought so hard for a commitment to fund a mobile base station upgrade in the area.

The improvements have been made possible by the Turnbull Government’s $220m Mobile Black Spot Programme.

After campaigning so hard on fixing mobile phone blackspots over a number of years, I am extremely proud of what the Turnbull Government is delivering.

We recently announced four new mobile base stations for Lorne South, Separation Creek, Kennett River and Horden Vale. Our government is also helping to fund mobile base stations in Aireys Inlet, Anglesea, Barwon Downs, Bellbrae, Birregurra, Cape Otway and Steiglitz. Barongarook and Carlisle River are now active, Gellibrand and Kawarren will come online shortly and construction will soon begin in Apollo Bay. However, I am extremely disappointed by delays with the construction of a mobile base station at Dereel and have raised my concerns with Telstra.

I have been a very strong local voice for the needs of towns in areas of high bushfire risk. Mobile communication is vital not just for small businesses, residents and tourists but for firefighters and other emergency service personnel.

The Turnbull Government understands the importance of mobile coverage in regional and remote areas of Australia which is why we have allocated $220m for this program.

But worry no, because I know that I am trying and that like the scribe in the fourth parable of the Gospel today I can learn and take up new efforts to journey towards knowing the treasure and recovering the pearl. We are on a journey with a loving Jesus Christ who draws us into the lovingness of God. God Bless.

Tip-off leads to wildlife seizure in Geelong

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) is reminding the community that taking injured or orphaned wildlife from the wild without authorisation is illegal.

It comes after Wildlife Officers seized native birds and possums from a private property in the Geelong area this month.

DELWP Acting Senior Wildlife Officer, Doug Stevens said: “We received information that wildlife had been illegally rescued, and was being kept at a home, acting as a wildlife shelter.”

“A search warrant was then executed at the property.”

“Native animals, taken illegally from the wild, were found in enclosures.”

“The wildlife was seized and taken to a DELWP approved wildlife shelter, where the animals were assessed, treated for injuries, and in some cases, released back into the wild.”

“Those found to have done so, face substantial fines and possibly jail.”

“The maximum penalties associated with taking and or being in possession of unlawfully taken protected wildlife range is a fine of up to $7,928 or six months imprisonment, or both.”

“The regulations and licences are to ensure wild populations of native species are protected.”

“If you rescue wildlife, you need to deliver the wildlife to a licensed wildlife shelter or a registered vet.”

“Looking after orphaned or injured wildlife requires special skills and experience.”

“If people are aware of wildlife that has been taken or is suspected of being taken from wild populations, please report this to DELWP’s Customer Service Centre on 136 186.”

Information can be provided anonymously, however, Wildlife Officers may need details to follow up on the initial report. All information is treated confidentially.

Winchelsea Movie Club Annual General Meeting & election of committee members Annual General Meeting & election of committee members for next 12 months In August we will hold the first Annual General Meeting of the Winchelsea Movie Club (run by a sub-committee of Growing Winchelsea) in conjunction with Growing Winchelsea's AGM. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at 7:00pm at the Hub, Eastern Reserve, Hopkins Street Winchelsea. As movie club members you are all invited and welcome to attend the AGM. At the meeting the Movie Club will present a short report and elect Movie Club committee members for the next 12 months.

We are seeking people from our member base to nominate themselves to join the committee for the coming year. Do you have an interest in helping to choose and organise movies, promote the club, assist on movie nights and work with The Globe and other local organisations? If so, we would love to have you on the movie club committee.

Drones over whales can land operators in trouble Drone operators are being warned to keep their distance from whales along Victoria’s south-west coast, or risk facing substantial fines.

Aircraft, which include drones, are not permitted to fly within 500 vertical metres or within a 500 metre radius of whales under the Wildlife Marine Mammals Regulations 2009.

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) Resource Protection Program Manager Mark Breguet said: “As interest grows around the migration of whales along our coastline, we’re finding the number of drone operators taking photos and footage of whales is increasing.”

“We’re currently investigating a report of a drone at Torquay last week, breaching the minimum distance which protects these vulnerable mammals.”

“The buzzing from drone motors has the potential to cause distress to whales.

This is particularly of concern while they are spending time along our coastline giving birth and caring for their young.”

“There’s also the potential for amateur operators to unintentionally strike whales.”

“While it may be tempting to fly a drone close to these amazing mammals for a photo, our message is simple – just don’t.”

“Breaching the minimum distance can attract a penalty of up to $3,171.”

“Offences can be reported to Barwon South West Wildlife Officers via the DELWP Customer Service Centre on 136 186.”

Operation Chester is running until the end of October, protecting the region’s critically endangered Southern Right Whales (Victorian Threatened Species Advisory List) and other whale species.

Patrols are primarily focusing on areas around Warrnambool, Portland and Cape Bridgewater, and moving further down the Surf Coast when whales are present there.

Frost This year we have experienced some unusually cold weather, with some plants that we consider frost hardy turning brown or turning to mush.

The Australian Plant Society defines a light frost as down to about -2º to - 3º, a moderate frost as down to - 4º to -5º and a heavy frost as below -6º. For us, forecast temperatures of 4º or less on a clear night will nearly always result in frost in some spots in our garden.

During a frost, plant cells freeze and shrink, with the water in them freezing and rupturing the cell walls in a rapid freeze, or moving out into the surrounding spaces, where it forms ice crystals. If the ice thaws after a short time, the water moves back into the cells and there will be little or no damage. If there is a longer period before the frozen water moves back, the cells dry out and desiccate, and the plants are damaged with ‘frost burn’. Damage also occurs if thawing is too rapid, putting the cell walls under pressure, which can happen when frozen tissue is exposed to strong sunshine. Lightly sprinkling water on frosted plants before the sun hits them can warm and thaw them at a slower rate.

The three forms of frost are: hoar frost – the moisture in the air has formed ice crystals which look feathery and white on plants; rime – water already on the plants from dew or fog freezes creating an icy look; and black frost – no apparent white frost but the plants turn black from freezing conditions. Black frost warnings on roads in the Castlemaine area alert drivers to slippery conditions when the road surface appears to be fine.

Temperatures in the garden are colder at ground level and warmer closer to buildings, paving and bodies of water such as tanks and ponds. Frost tends to gather at the bottom of a slope and in valleys. Overhanging trees, neighbouring shrubs and buildings can provide physical protection from frost.

Observing and noting the ‘frost tendency’ of different parts of your garden can help you plant less frost hardy plants in appropriate spots.

Plants that generally need frost protection are indoor plants, tropical plants, spring blooming plants such as azaleas, rhododendrons and fruit trees in blossom, citrus, tender bulbs such as dahlias, geraniums, succulents and some ground covers. Common sense, reading plant labels, researching and checking out the gardens in your district will help you to choose climate appropriate plants.

Some ways to protect plants from frost include taking plants indoors and moving pots under shelter. Protect plants in the garden by covering with a thick layer of mulch, dropping a container over small plants, and draping blankets, sheets and shade cloth over the top of larger plants. It is best if the frost cover reaches down to the soil, so it can trap heat. Take the covers off in the morning.

Bare, moist, compact soil absorbs heat and releases it at night much better than mulched areas. Organic mulch can act as a protection if it is raked back before a forecast frost, allowing the soil to absorb heat, and replaced just before the frost, to hold in the heat. Mulches of stones will naturally give out heat at night. Liquid potassium fertiliser and sprayed-on diluted ‘worm wee’ or seaweed products can help to promote thicker, more resilient cell growth, helping to make some plants more resilient.

It helps to water plants, particularly potted plants, before the frost, because water in the soil will help to keep it warmer. The warmth the soil gives off will provide some temperature modification for the lower leaves and, while the top may be damaged, the plant can survive.

Extra water in the plant cells also helps, since it keeps the plant warmer and

helps prevent desiccation.

The good news is that many plants can bounce back. They will be able to regrow from the roots, or send out new leaves. Delay pruning off damaged leaves until after the last frost because they will provide some protection and you do not want to stimulate tender new growth. On larger plants, prune once new growth shows you which parts have been irreparably damaged. Some plants that look like they have died can recover if pruned nearly to the ground, but make sure you don’t prune below the graft on grafted plants.

Call for submissions to regional education review Federal Member for Corangamite, Sarah Henderson, has called on members of the Corangamite community to have their say in a landmark review into regional, rural and remote education initiated by the Turnbull-Joyce Government.

“This marks an important milestone of the independent review with the release of a discussion paper and launch of an online platform for public submissions,” Ms Henderson said.

The discussion paper, prepared by the reviewer Emeritus Professor John

Halsey, identifies the key issues and challenges faced by rural students and poses areas of focus to stimulate ideas about possible solutions.

“I urge members of the Corangamite education community, families and employers to consider the discussion paper and take the opportunity to share their ideas and experiences about how best we can support local students to succeed in school and beyond,” Ms Henderson said.

“We’re listening closely to regional communities in our efforts to improve the education and preparation of young people from the country to develop into

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce said the Halsey Review was part of the Coalition’s efforts to ensure regional, rural and remote students not only achieve success at school, but go on to further study, training and employment.

“Students living outside our major cities face unique challenges compared to their city cousins which can cause significant disparities between their education outcomes,” Minister Joyce said.

“And the difference starts early. We know regional, rural and remote students are more likely to have developmental vulnerabilities when they start school, such as lower language and cognitive skills. Their NAPLAN results are generally lower and they go on to be under-represented in higher education.

Minister Birmingham said the public submissions would highlight issues to be further explored by the review through face-to-face consultations from July to October.

New regulations support safe chemical use Victorian farm chemical users are set to benefit from reduced government red tape regarding requirements for agricultural and veterinary chemical use.

The Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals (Control of Use) Regulations 2017 come into effect on 23 July, 2017.

Agriculture Victoria Acting Principal Policy Officer Michael Laity said the regulations had been updated to ensure they remained the most effective means of regulating agricultural and veterinary chemical use in Victoria.

Victorian farm chemical users should note that the regulations include the following changes: • simpler and more flexible record keeping requirements for farm chemical users; • amended product labelling and advice notes requirements for veterinary practitioners and stockfeed manufacturers; • clearer notification responsibilities for aircraft or mister spraying near sensitive services; • additional aerial spraying equipment options for pilots; • recognition of permits issued by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) to use ‘restricted use’ chemicals not in accordance with the product label (offlabel), which will reduce duplication in government processes; and • introduction of a new offence regarding the possession of certain high risk unregistered chemicals.

Under the new possession offence, people may no longer keep chemical products containing arsenic (note this excludes currently registered copper chromium arsenate products); fenthion; fenthionethyl; parathion; parathion-ethyl; parathionmethyl; or strychnine.

Netball News We headed to the “Hill” (Bell Post Hill) this week in very blustery conditions expecting some close matches and hoping for some success. We came home with 4 victories, with thrilling finishes for 13 & Under, C Grade and A Grade, whilst D Grade took a comfortable win.

A Grade

Winchelsea 37 def Bell Post Hill 36 With young goaler Ebony Berg sustaining a knee injury during the week we had do some shuffling of sides and call back ex-junior Tahlia Berg. Tahlia slotted beautifully into wing attack and found our goalers Eliza Cole and coach Kendall Carracher with ease. Kendall opened up the court in goal attack providing great drive and then finishing her shots with reasonable accuracy in the blustery conditions. Marnie Bruce and Sara Groves proved to be an impenetrable force through the defensive end of the court with their dictating defence. The game itself was of great standard with the lead changing on many occasions and coming right down to the final whistle.

B Grade

Bell Post Hill 36 def Winchelsea 19 We really struggled to get it together in B Grade this week, looking flat and not being able to find space. Our second quarter was our best where managed to go goal for goal with Bell Post Hill but we couldn’t take this momentum into the second half and Bell Post ran away with the game. Beth Connors was our best making an immediate impact when moving into the goal circle whilst Kelly Wainewright made the most of every opportunity to drive the ball into attack. Alex Stobaus worked hard defensively against the strong and experienced Bell Post Hill goaling combination.

C Grade

Winchelsea 37 def Bell Post Hill 35 Facing final contenders Bell Post Hill our C Grade side went into this game complete underdogs but immediately stamped their position on the game. We held a two goal lead at half time but dropped back a goal in the third only to gain in back in the last quarter to take the game by a mere two goals. Belinda Czerniawski was back to her pre-injury form dominating the goal circle with some brilliant feeds coming from coach Sally Cole, Amanda Carroll and Holly Worland. Bronte Middleton controlled the defensive end of the court providing many turnovers and then bringing the ball down to the attackers.

D Grade

Winchelsea 39 def Bell Post Hill 19 We came out of the blocks with a vengeance this week in D Grade with a 10 goal to 2 first quarter. Lyndal O’Grady was inspirational in goals, providing fantasic leads into the circle and then finishing off with ease given the blustery conditions.

Jess Loone provided some great drive through the centre court and fed the goaling combination well. We managed to extend the lead throughout the 2nd and 3rd quarters which allowed us to play around with the team a little in the last quarter. Bell Post did claw back a bit of ground but we already had the game comfortably won.

17 & Under

Bell Post Hill 40 def Winchelsea 14 Our 17 & Under team took another huge blow this week with a mid-week knee injury to key goaler Ebony Berg along with illness taking Issy Loone from the game as well.

Given they were facing undefeated Bell Post Hill it was not the best week to have occurred. The young side, consisting of all but three players still eligible for 15 & Under, put up a really creditable effort given all the combinations were new. Beth Connors was superb up both ends of the court, sinking some magnificent goals in very windy conditions. Emily Steed did

extremely well converted herself from being a feeding gaoler to an impact gaoler, while her sister Hayley also stepped up to provide great defensive pressure in wing defence.

15 & Under

Bell Post Hill 23 def Winchelsea 6 With a number of players suffering from illness this week the girls just weren’t at their best from the beginning. Facing the worst of the days weather they struggled to convert when they did manage to penetrate the circle. Georgia Bell was great both through the centre court and also in defence, providing a number of turnovers.

Teneille Collins & Hayley Steed saw plenty of the ball down our defensive end and made the most of any mistakes by Bell Post Hill. They got their fair share of the large amounts of rebound opportunities and drove the ball well into the centre court.

13 & Under

Winchelsea 22 def Bell Post Hill 19 We started off strong this week taking a 6 goal lead at the half time break. Our attacking combination of Laura & Demi Robertson, Eve Mawson and Sasha Ives was working like clockwork, with great draws and pass selection. Unfortunately for us Bell Post Hill started to fight back in the 2nd half and nearly came over the top, however the girls shows great steady heads and were able to withstand the fight back to score a narrow win. Grace Leeson was pivotal in defence especially in the dying minutes where she provided some team lifting turnovers and rebounds.

Blues News

With a massive gale blowing straight down the ground, Bell Post Hill had the advantage in the 1st quarter and kept the Blues scoreless. In the second with the wind advantage Winchelsea kept the opposition to just the 1 point, but were unable to score enough to keep themselves in the match. The 2nd half was much the same as the first, with the Blues try as they might couldn’t buy a goal and finished the game with a total of just the 4 points. B.P.H. handled the conditions much better on their home ground.

200 GAME ACHIEVMENT AND CELEBRATION - BYRON MATHISON: This week the W.F.N.C. have a more winnable game hosting East Geelong at Eastern Reserve, and everyone at the Club will be looking forward to seeing Byron Mathison run out onto the ground to celebrate his 200th game. The boys will be all out to win this one for “Boz”. Father of 2 and a great Clubman, Byron has toiled long and hard under a variety of Coaches for the Mighty Blues, - he can be seen helping out in the Canteen, can also be seen enjoying his favourite Mixed Grill when on offer at the Blues Bistro on a Thursday night after training. Boz has given great service to his Club and it would be great to see as many as possible at the ground to cheer for his 200th game.

SPONSORS DAY: Also on the 5th of August is the Club’s annual Sponsors day . All Sponsors are welcome to come to the ground from 12 midday onwards. Everyone thinks of players, coaches and trainers when they think about the Club, but the Club cannot operate without their Sponsors.

The W.F.N.C. wishes to thank the Businesses and the generous individuals who have sponsored the Club over the years. Hopefully as many as possible will get to the ground on Saturday to take part in their day.

SENIORS: The windy conditions prevailed as the Senior side took to the field, and while the Blues fought the game out all day, they were no match for the bigger, quicker side playing on their home ground. The Blues had trouble keeping their feet while B.P.H. managed to keep theirs in the greasy surface conditions.
