2015 Trick or Treat Kidz Fest Sunday 25 October, 2015 10am to 4pm Barwon Park Mansion Winchelsea-Inverleigh Road Winchelsea, VIC 3241

Trick or Treat Kidz Fest, held at Historical Barwon Park Mansion, Winchelsea, began as a backyard children’s party has grown to become a Large Community Event held at Historical Barwon Park Mansion, Winchelsea (20 minutes from Geelong – 1 hour from Melbourne). This festival is run by the Winchelsea Primary School, with all profits returned to the school.

Each year the party has grown, so with the help of a handful of amazing mothers it was decided to create a Halloween Party for everyone to enjoy with lots of fun and freaky activities, such as Spooky Mini Golf, Pumpkin Bowling, Pumpkin & Eye Ball Toss, Toilet Paper Mummies, a Freaky Fashion Parade and Spooky Disco.

This is an opportunity for all children to enjoy dressing up and playing a range of interactive “Spooky” games and activities with families and friends. We have a stages jam packed with “Spooktacular” children’s entertainers we have art and craft galore, quizzes and games, our “Fangtastic” Freaky Fashion Parade and lots lots more.... including our own proven fun and exciting spooky activities into the day to encourage family inclusion by all participating and enjoying the activities together.

A local boy, Darcy Parish is expected to go top 5 in this year’s AFL draft.

This is what Callum Twomey said about him in the Phantom form guide update “All of Parish’s game-changing qualities were on show in the Geelong Falcons’ qualifying final against North Ballarat, when he collected 27 disposals, had seven tackles, five clearances and eight inside50s. Parish is tough, composed and is a quick-thinker: he hunts the ball, darts away and doesn’t take long to make a decision. Parish tested at the combine but didn’t stand out in any of the events. That shouldn’t be a surprise or a worry. He’s a natural footballer and one who steps up a level when the ball is there to get and offers plenty of dash.”

National Broadband coming to Winch.

According to the NBN website, the majority of Winchelsea will receive the new service by March 2016.

Approximately 700 premises will receive it via fibre to the node, and a further 260 premises will receive it via fixed wireless in the first half of 2017.

Historical Society News

A set of glass negatives, donated to the society by Geoff Black, have been printed and are now on display at the Societies rooms.

The photos were taken by Jack McClelland (stepfather of Geoff Black) - who worked in the Otways in the early 1900s. Jack was recognised as a wellknown bridge builder in the district.

Everyone is welcome to visit us on Wednesday afternoons (open from 1.00 to 4.30 pm ), to see our collection of photos, displays and local family histories.

The rooms are at the rear of the Tea Rooms in Hesse Street (just where the library bus parks on Fridays).

Council spokesman to discuss Winchelsea Common issues A petition with 400 signatures asking for the go Kart track to be re-opened was presented at the meeting of Growing Winchelsea Inc., last week.

Presently, the area is closed to public access due to the presence of lead in the soil. This is due to the activities of the Gun Club, which operated on the land for many years.

Our questions regarding plans for future uses of the Common will be forwarded to Council. Surf Coast Shire representative Rowan Mackenzie will address our next meeting to discuss the issue and give answers to the written questions.

Also discussed at the meeting were:

RV Friendly Town proposal There has been a positive feedback from local residents to the RV Friendly Town proposal at the ‘Listening Post’ sessions.

Simon Loone from Surf Coast Shire has discussed ramifications with the local caravan park management.

Also, some potential alternative sites were suggested by residents.

The Barwon Hotel is willing to offer sites at $10 per night with money back if the travellers dine at the hotel. The Council has no objection to this plan.

To receive RV Friendly Town status, the minimum requirement is 10 spaces.

Hesse Street traffic problems The following problems were mentionedInsufficient parking (Council should purchase vacant block opposite the Post Office) Turning trucks damaging road, property and gutters and kerbing on west side needs upgrading Footpaths needed (at least to Police Station) as road is now too dangerous to walk along Camber on road is excessive, causing problems for trucks attempting U turns No through road signs needed as many cars enter street thinking it’s the Lorne road

Proposed pedestrian bridge at end of Hesse Street should only be a ford (as near the swimming pool) as it would need to be excessively high to avoid the one in 100-year floods Access needs to be provided under the east side of the road bridges to allow for a walking loop.

Town Entrance Sculptures (Winchelsea Gateway Project)

In November, Council will call for Expressions of Interest from artists and art based collaborative teams to nominate for this project. A selection panel will short list three artists (or teams) who will be offered an opportunity to develop and propose a concept. Council has asked for Growing Winchelsea to nominate a representative to the selection panel, and Sandra Jones was nominated

Catch a Carp Day To be held on Saturday October 31 from 10 am to 2 pm. The fishing competition will be run by the Men’s Shed with food supplied by the Lions Club. Proceeds will go to Landcare.

Shopping centre car park We will write to Vic Roads, Cut and Fill, Sarah Henderson and David O’Brien (National Party) regarding the importance of completing the roadworks by early December, to assist our traders and shoppers with accessing the area during the busy Christmas period..

Dangerous refuge (Deans Marsh Road)

The pedestrian refuge, near the golf club and at the entrance to the new housing estate, has been hit by cars regularly since its construction. It is hard to see at night, afternoons due to sun glare, and in foggy conditions.

It was decided to seek information from the local police regarding reports of accidents. We will then write to Vic Roads and Surf Coast Shire, regarding the poor design of the road around the site, and pointing out the added problem of the

unsealed section of road, and the danger it could cause.

Julian Burnside Refugee talk This will be held at the Hub on November 8 from 2 to 4 pm. Help is requested for set-up prior to the event.

Winchelsea Prospectus Council has forwarded a copy of the proposed prospectus. When completed, it will be distributed to real estate agents etc., and will be made available to prospective residents and businesses. It sets out the benefits that Winchelsea has to offer, and the organisations that operate in the town.

Tourism Michael Hastings reported that the Surf Coast Tourism Advisory Panel, that has 4 workshops over the next 12 months, begins its meetings from next Wednesday.

Its aims are to support businesses, economic development, increase tourist visitors to the area, and highlight businesses with a link to Winchelsea.

Ideas need to be developed for submission to the workshops.

Our next meeting will be announced in the Star.

For the past seven years, I have been having my classes inside. My class and I have been cramped up in a tiny classroom, and we would like to change that. We would benefit by having our classes outside because there is lots of space, we wouldn’t need to be squished into a small classroom. It would be fun! We would be receiving fresh air and we could pick who we sit next to.

Having classes outside in terms 1 and 4 means there would be good weather while we’re outside. Therefore we will have lots of energy, be a lot happier, have a positive attitude towards learning and improve our vitamin D intake.

Having our classes outside would be beneficial because there would be lots of space, the students could spread their work out and use as much space as they wanted whereas being inside you have to use a small amount of space as well as sharing a small table with someone else.

I want classes to be held outside for term 1 and 4 because it will give us a lot more space, it will always be good weather and we’ll have positive attitudes towards learning.

Winchelsea Uniting Church Art & Photography Show

Tim Lucus, will be judging the photography section this year at the Winchelsea Uniting Church art & Photography Show,Tim took out the photography section of the show last year with a beautiful photo. He is a very well know Otway Photographer and lives in Barongarook, he is involved with the Gellbrand River Art Gallery. Tim will also be displaying some of his work at the show.

As a photographer I look at the environment around me different to many other people, sometimes its the smallest detail that grabs my attention but then there are times that the scene as a whole has that ‘wow’ factor. Often when capturing an image I will already have in mind how I want it presented – colour, black/white maybe even sepia.

Additionally I will be thinking about my choice of media – maybe I want a super glossy finish, perhaps a textured matt surface – its the image that makes this decision.

What I am looking for as a judge in this years Winchelsea Art and Photography Show? The primary element I am looking for is photography as a piece of artwork, something that the viewer can see the photographer has taken time in the composition, capture and processing to produce the final result. The image needs to make me want to go to the location, maybe its because of the details, hidden away in the shadows, maybe its right there in the forefront. Another significant factor for me when looking at an image is to get a sense of wonder – maybe its the composition that makes the eyes wander across the scene into the distance, perhaps its an element in the scene that’s eye catching and keeps me coming back to it.

I’m looking forward to seeing the entries and meeting with the artists on the opening night!

Geelong Star community rally set for Torquay

Sarah Henderson MP Federal Member for Corangamite Today I call on concerned community members to rally in Torquay against the Geelong Star on Sunday October 25.

I am organising this rally with recreational fishing activist and local builder Jason O’Neill with the full backing of the Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation and VR Fish. Jason organised a rally against the Geelong Star in May and has been a very strong community voice on this issue.

As a warrior for the environment, I am determined to stand up and fight for the people of Corangamite on this important issue. After nine dolphin deaths and the resumption of overnight fishing, enough is enough.

To call this vessel the Geelong Star is a real slur on our city – this vessel is no star of Geelong.

In the electorate of Corangamite – an electorate which includes 188km of coastline - there is very significant opposition to this trawler. The scientific evidence to support the fishing of the small pelagic fishery in the manner being proposed is simply not conclusive.

Regrettably, Seafish Australia has declined a request by the Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation not to fish in certain high value recreational fishing waters. This is also of particular concern to VR Fish which represents Victoria’s 721,000 recreational fishers.

On both environmental and recreational fishing grounds I believe a ban is justified.

Our rally will bring together concerned fishers, families, boaties, people concerned about the environment, our oceans and our fisheries.

The event will commence at 11.00am on Sunday October 25 2015 at the Torquay Angling Club, Fishermans Beach The Esplanade, Torquay.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor Local CFA crews praised

I would like to offer my praise to local CFA crews for their prompt response to the Wensleydale fire last week.

Local CFA units were quick to respond to the fire under difficult circumstances and their efforts should be recognised.

If it wasn’t for the prescribed burns in recent years undertaken in surrounding state forests that were under ember attack, the Wensleydale fire could have been much worse and have even engulfed property all the way to the coast.

I am certain the prescribed burns limited the fire’s ferocity and the burn area.

While it is tragic that a house was lost, jointly-funded Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief, announced today, has been activated and will provide assistance to those affected by the fire.

This fire and others across the state last week demonstrate the importance for landholders to undertake fire mitigation works now to reduce the risk as we move into the high bushfire danger period.

Cafe Style Support

The Surf Coast Shire is putting on a Cafe Style Support day for seniors at the Eastern Reserve rooms on Wednesday the 28th of October between 10am and 12pm. There will be 4 short films with health themes which will go for approx 35 minutes. A light lunch will be provided and a gold coin donation would be appreciated.

1 small Lemon sliced thinly 1 Bayleaf 2 Parsley stalks 1/2 teasp Salt 1/4 teasp Black Pepper The garnish A little melted Butter Thin Lemon Slices Broccoli, cooked, chilled and tossed in a light French Dressing Place the trout in a large 5cm deep roasting pan or ovenproof dish. Add vinegar, lemon slices, seasonings and sufficient water to cover. Cover with aluminium foil, and bake at 180c for 20 minutes, or until the flesh lifts easily from the bones. Remove and carefully skin the main section, leaving the head and tail intact. Brush the fish flesh with butter.

Cover loosely and cool. Arrange on a fish platter and arrange the broccoli around the platter edges. Accompany this dish with Lemon Cream Sauce. Serves 4 Lemon Cream Sauce 1 cup Pure Cream 2 Tablespoons finely chopped spring onions 1 teaspoon finely grated Lemon Rind 2 teaspoons Lemon Juice Salt and Pepper to taste Whisk all the ingredients together with a fork till the sauce thickens and holds its shape.

Disproportionate funding an issue in Winchelsea

John Broadrick Every year we hear the same complaints following the Shire budget release- that Torquay gets everything.

Because of the way the figures are presented normally, comparison is difficult. But this year due to the help of Shire CEO Keith Baillie, ‘Snapshot’ sheets showing the expenditure in each of the Wards have been produced. This allows us to do some comparisons.

Figures can be manipulated to show anything, so there are three tables showing different levels of spending.

Percentages are rounded up or down to the nearest percent.

The fourth table shows the spending on Capital Projects and New Initiatives, AND Renewal Projects, (per Ward), including External Funding. The Renewal Projects includes items such as improvements to our swimming pool surrounds, Hesse Street bridge design, Freshwater Creek flood mitigation works etc.

What we don’t know is the Council spending on Services to each Ward. These include such things as subsidising our gym and swimming pool, costs of Home Help etc.

In summation, yes, we seem to have been short-changed, but more importantly, how do we change it?

The Winchelsea Star has been named the winner for the Best Editorial, was a finalist in the Best Sports Reporting, and received a Special Mention in the Best Photograph in this year’s Community Newspaper Association of Victoria annual awards.

We were pitted against community newspapers from all over Victoria. Some are simple two pagers, and some are very professional newspapers that would rival our daily papers. Some have a print run of 100, and some print many thousands.

Honours for the Star

In selecting us as a finalist, the judges said “Winchelsea Star’s bold and striking front cover ‘600’ featuring long-time local footballer Trevor Wilson, his two sons and grandsons was a knockout. It was also great to see the Star acknowledge the 50 year achievement of the club’s time-keeper Joe Buhrmann in the supporting article. A great example of community coverage.”

It’s a credit to our contributors who submitted the item. The photo was taken by club supporter Sue Lubke and the story written by club secretary Janet Fletcher.

Our win for the Best Editorial was for the story ‘Disproportionate funding an issue

for Winchelsea’ back in May this year.

The judges commented that “This editorial tackled an issue that also was the subject of 4 other entries – local government.

What made the Winchelsea editorial stand out was its detailed approach that went further than reflect the disquiet of smaller communities with local government.

They made the effort to actually be able to present some statistical comparisons to enable readers to be better factually informed.”

We received the Special Mention in the Best Photograph section for a photograph of the Platypus in the Barwon River, in the December 2 edition. The photo was taken

by Veronica MacDonald.

Our success this year follows on from our achievement last year when we were a finalist in the Best Photograph section.

The Star is in its 38th year of publishing the news of our town. It first hit the streets on Thursday August 5th 1977. What a great ongoing legacy to those who started it, and those who have given many hours of voluntary service to its continuing success and popularity ever since.

Winchelsea Good Bye Mary Orchard Refugee Support Group Some 40 years ago we, the O’Mara family, moved into Winchelsea and developed a great friendship with our neighbours, Sam and Mary Orchard.

Sam and Mary became our daughters’ “grandparents”. Could you pick the kids up after school Sammy? No problems.

We have to go out late. Can we drop the kids off with you Mary? No problems.

Our kids loved being with them and I am sure many other Winch kids had the same relationship.

Then all of a sudden Sam was no longer with us. Mary lived by herself for a couple of years but, with increasing age, she decided it was better to return to her family in Warrnambool where, a few days ago, she passed away at the age of 94.

Farewell Mary and Sam. The world is a better place for you being in it.

The next meeting of the Group is this Tuesday October 20rth at 7.30pm in the Uniting Church hall.

The meeting will mainly focus on the visit to Winchelsea of the high profile Human Rights Advocate Julian Burnside, AO QC at the Hub on Sunday November 8th at 2.00pm. As usual, opportunity will be made for those wishing to provide items for the hamper to be distributed to refugee teenagers and families living in Belmont.

The meeting is open to all who have a passion to seek for justice to those who are new arrivals in this very lucky country.

The R and R column

This will be a continuing series of the recollections and reflections of some of our local residents.

This month, it’s Paul and Lyn Maguire, who spoke to Jenny Mathison.

28 years and still going.

The Maguires have seen it all – Kilograms of saveloys sold every day, only whole chickens, and housewives bought a side of lamb a week instead of shopping daily.

Names of cuts may change but the quality of meat is known well around the Winchelsea district. It takes years to work up a reputation and Lyn and Paul Maguire have worked together for 28 years to build their butchers shop business in Winchelsea.

They have seen many changes in that time, and as Paul commented, they now see children getting off the school bus having previously seen their parents alight outside the shop.

Paul wanted to be a baker but took off to Melbourne as a young lad of 16 to be an apprentice electrician. But working on navy boats in the docklands was not for Paul so he ran home to Birregurra after a few months. His dad said “Ok, you can get to work”. He was soon apprenticed to the local butcher, his father Cindy Maguire and stayed from 1981-87 when the Winch shop became available and Paul and Lyn arrived in our town.

Lyn met Paul at the Birregurra Football at the young age of 15 and gained her experience with the young Paul and his dad in the shop.

Following the misfortune of a fire at Ridgeways Supermarket in Lorne, the army put up a tin shed and meat was supplied from the Birregurra butchers till the new supermarket was built. Lyn worked at Lorne for 4 years and helped set up their meat department and in so doing, set herself up for a lifetime of helping the people in Winch.

After two years in Winch they married and some four and six years later Maggie and Billy arrived. Most women have many weeks off after having a baby but not Lyn. She thought two weeks off after each caesarian was long enough, so back to the shop with babies in tow each time. Maggie and Billy have no regrets about growing

up in the shop with their parents. They have fond memories of the people they met through their childhood, many more than most “stay at home” children. Brian (Shrimpy) Schroeter, taken long before his time, was a great friend and took the children many days for walks, shopping, play dates. He was sadly missed by the Maquire family. Maggie, now as an adult and registered nurse, recently spent some of her time at Hesse Rural Health and many of the residents were delighted to remember the young Maggie from the butchers.

Maguires has always been known for their devotion to the Collingwood Football Club. Every year when the Magpies are in the finals, the black and white appeared, with Sparra painting a Magpie on the window along with the specials. Inside one may find a black and white painted wall or streamers you had to fight your way through. Some years these were removed very quickly by the owners but all in good fun. And why Collingwood, you may well ask? It goes back 5 generations when the original Maguire relative landed in Collingwood. But Lyn says “It’s like having a love affair with 40 guys”.

Meat is still meat but prices, cuts and uses have changed. In 1987, the first week Maguires opened, specials included traditional rolled fore-quarters of lamb for $2.99 per kg and T-bones for 4.99 per kg. Today these same cuts are $16.99 per kg for fore quarter and $22.99 per kg for T-bone. Saveloys were in great demand and purchased by Paul and Lyn in 20 kg bags. Now there are few sold.

Schnitzels were not heard of, and chicken was purchased whole. Customer today sometimes bring their recipe books to the shop, and Lyn or Paul may decide whether the meat required just simply has a different name. They say nothing has stumped them.

Working together for more than 28 years, there have been no more than 4 rows.

Lyn would be happy to tell you of the scrubbing brush, chicken nuggets, meat block and coffee incidents, if asked.

When asked how long they will be the butchers for Winchelsea, Paul’s reply was “Forever. Where else can you work with your wife, kids, (business) partner in one place and enjoy it”. Lyn’s reply was “I’m a good wife – I’m here forever too.”

Church News St John’s

Members of our Parish, especially those in Bannockburn were saddened this week when the lovely and historic Bannockburn church was destroyed by fire. For the time being Mass will be held at Inverleigh at 9am each Sunday. Thank you to everyone for their prayers, love and support at this sad time.

Many memories of faith and life happenings were left with us.

The Rosary Campaign continues in the Meredith corner of the parish, commencing the 25th of October the campaign will be held here in Winchelsea before finishing at Winchelsea on Saturday the 31st of October.

The Rosary campaign is linked with the National Campaign.

Farewell to Father Herman: Father Herman will be returning to the Philippines on November 11th, to continue his ministry there. To thank him for his care of us over the past 6 years you are invited to come together as a parish on Sunday the 8th.

Afterwards for a barbeque lunch under the gum trees, meat will be supplied.

Parishioners will provide salads and sweets.

Please bring your own drinks.

While Father Herman and Dianne are on a pilgrimage in Israel and Jordan, with 20 other pilgrims from our Parish as well as other parts of Geelong from Monday the 19th until the 28th of October. Father George Slowinski will celebrate Mass at Winchelsea and Father Anthony from Colac will celebrate Mass at Inverleigh and Meredith.

Please pray for a safe and successful trip for everyone. The Office & Op Shop will be open as usual on Wednesdays and Friday, please phone the office on 52861230 for any advice etc.

Our Lady’s Star of the Sea, Ocean Grove is holding a Men Alive Weekend on November 28th & 29th. An invitation is extended to all men from our Parish to attend; Men Alive is a Catholic Ministry to men. The objective is to revitalise men in their faith, encourage active participation in their church and importantly to support their parish priest. Commencing on Saturday 28th, at 8am - 9pm and Sunday 29th, 8a.m. - 1pm, at the Star of the Sea School Ocean Grove. Cost $60. Please take a flyer from your church today.

From G&S Society Lead to Winchelsea Morning Melodies

What a break – just as Emily Crawford completes a season in Melbourne and country Victoria as Lady Angela in the G&S Society’s production of “Patience” than she is on the road to Winchelsea to be our guest soloist at next week’s Morning Melodies on October 29th.

A young and emerging mezzo-soprano, Emily Crawford is in the final year of her Bachelor of Music at The Melbourne Conservatorium of Music under the tutelage of respected Melbourne teacher of voice, Peter Mander, after completing her advance diploma of Music Performance in 2012. She was a recipient of an Opera Scholars Australia (OSA) scholarship, in the 2013/14 program, performing at their Springtime concert, Opera in the Alps with Anthony Warlow, Opera in the Market with Teddy Tahu Rhodes, and Carmen in the Gaol. In 2014 Emily travelled to Queensland and took part in a workshop and performance with Opera Queensland. Recently she performed in Victoria Opera’s production of The Grumpiest Boy in the World as Grump Two, and in Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Victoria’s production of Patience as Lady Angela, this prioduction concluding this week. Other performances include, Dido and Aeneas, The Play of Herod, Trial by Jury, The Sorcerer, HMS Pinafore, Jesus Christ Superstar, My Fair Lady, The Play of Daniel and Les Misérables.

Next week, Emily will showcase the range of music which she loves to sing, with offerings from opera, and music theatre and popular songs we all love.

As ever, patrons can arrive next Thursday at 10.00am for a delicious morning tea provided by Philomena, and prepare for Emily’s wonderful presentation at 11.00.

Winchelsea Bowls Club

By Kitty ’n Jack Tuesday Pennant commenced last week in terrific conditions for bowling. Both teams played away with Division 1 travelling to Camperdown Golf and Division 2 to Simpson. Division 1 Winchelsea def Camperdown Golf, winning 1/3 rinks 67 shots to 64 shots.

Division 2 Winchelsea were def by Simpson, winning 0/3 rinks 53 shots to 70 shots.

Saturday Pennant would have to have been a great morale booster for the Club with all divisions having a sound win and all rinks up. Division 1 Winchelsea travelled to Simpson, winning all rinks 110 shots to 75 shots. Division 2 Winchelsea was at home to Cressy winning all rinks 102 shots to 61 shots.

Division 4 hosted Lorne winning all rinks 86 shots to 51 shots. Great effort all players, keep it going!

A Successful Night Out For The Blokes The ‘Blokes Night Out – Take a Mate’ event held at the Eastern Reserve Hub last Friday 9th October during Mental Health Week generated an outstanding attendance of 70 men from around the district. It was hailed as an outstanding success and provided important stimulus for men to think about their own health.

The event was hosted by Hesse Rural Health and supported by sponsors Growing Winchelsea, Surf Coast Shire, Corangamite Financial Services (Winchelsea Community Bendigo Bank) and Winchelsea Lions Club.

MC Rob Cameron then took the floor, sharing some of his personal thoughts about sport and community participation being important drivers for positive mental health.

The feature of the evening was a play entitled ‘My Dog Has Stripes’, introduced and led by well-known Australian actor Alan Hopgood. It was a return visit to Winchelsea for Alan who was also here in 2013 delivering an important men’s health message.

The setting for his current play was focused on a group of case workers who meet regularly to discuss the people with mental health conditions they are each helping. One of the workers themselves then discovers he is also suffering from depression. The play managed to cover a wide sample of mental health problems that engaged all age groups.

Following the play Alan Hopgood shared briefly his own personal health challenges over the years and then contributed to a panel with local GP Dr. Rob McDonald and Mr. Jules Marotta, from the Colac campus of Barwon Health’s Community Mental Health Team. A dynamic and engaging question and answer session followed.

Lions Club Member, Mr. Murray Aisbett concluded by thanking Hesse Rural Health for hosting the event, as well as other supporting sponsors. Dr. Rob McDonald and Jules Marotta were also acknowledged along with Alan and Gaye Hopgood and cast. Thanks also went to the Winchelsea Cricket club for running the bar, Libby Leak and Winchelsea football club for catering and Michelle Stocks and Stuart Fountain for setting up the venue.

It was a successful and thought provoking event with many staying on for sometime afterward to further discuss the issues raised.

That’s a good sign for improved men’s health in the Winchelsea area.
