This year’s Festival of Colours, also called Holi, was another success for the Hare Krishna at Bambra.

It’s an event where you throw coloured powder over others, with live music, dance and drama. Jumping castles and games for the children, and delicious vegetarian food on offer.

I need a new computer. Where on earth do I start? I went to Harvey Norman to be confronted by an ocean of alternatives and technical jargon. I had no idea what I wanted, what specifications I needed or how much I should pay.

An article in The Star (March 31) quoted a VicRoads spokesman saying that the water leak on the Princes Highway near Witcombe Street and the cladding on the new toilet block would both be completed about two weeks after Easter.

Thank God for Tony Phelps! He has set himself up at Winch House on Friday mornings from 10am and let me tell you, he is worth his weight in gold! After a few minutes, I walked away full of confidence in knowing what I wanted and how to get it. And his advice was free!! While I was there, he also helped people with the internet, emails and a smart phone. He seems comfortable with all I.T. He can explain in English and he doesn’t treat you like a dill. Full marks to Tony Phelps.

It’s now four weeks since Easter.

I think the real interesting eight words in the article are “ Eight different Chief Executive Officers over that time.”

The road is still diverted around the leak, and while some work has been undertaken, the road is still unsealed and traffic still diverted into one lane.

The toilet block remains untouched!

Is this VicRoads flagrant disregard for the people of Winchelsea, or lack of supervision of its contractors, or both?

Also, does VicRoads know something that we don’t? Why do we have elaborate direction signs and turning lanes into Mathisons Road (the ‘road to no-where’)?

Is it going to be opened up as a road?

Can VicRoads also explain why the contracts for both bridges needed for the road duplication, weren’t let earlier, so that the finish could have been better coordinated with the road opening?

The next of the monthly meetings of the Winchelsea Men’s Shed is to be held this coming Wednesday, May 6th at 10.00am.

Reports will be heard of developments in the workshop, successes at recent BBQ’s, continuing progress in the garden area and new projects to prepare for. It is good to see a few new faces at the Shed, and we look forward to those who are seeking a new outlook on life to come and join in the friendship offered to those who come, and the activities we can all help with in various ways. It was a thrill to see so many young faces at the combined effort of the Shire, Men’s Shed and Community garden at the after school program a fortnight ago, with children experiencing the joys of the garden (with samples to take home), and the BBQ, shared by parents, teachers our outgoing Shire Councillor, Cr. Rod Nockles, and the men.

What is the problem at the Surf Coast Council, that CEO’s come and go at such a fast rate?

The Men’s Shed especially look forward to meeting up again with Jim Carrol on his return to Australia after his momentous trip to the pilgrimage to Gallipoli at the centenary commemoration of Anzac Day, and the autographs he has acquired on the Australian flag he took with him.

Pest controllers remove more than 65 European Wasp nests

Surf Coast Shire Council’s pest controller has located and treated more than 65 European Wasp nests in Winchelsea over the last five weeks.

The nests were found on the public land parts of the Barwon River banks between the Winchelsea Golf Course and the Napthine Nature Reserve.

The control program came about following reports of higher than usual wasp activity within Winchelsea over the summer months.

It is thought that the recent mild seasons had led to the 2014-15 summer being one of the worst European wasp seasons in 20 years.

It is hoped the Council control program, combined with the efforts of private landowners, will result in much lower numbers of the European Wasp in the coming spring – particularly if Winchelsea experiences a cold winter as this helps to kill off hibernating wasp queens.

While Council can treat wasp nests on public land, it is up to individual property owners to manage wasp nests on private property. The use of a professional pest controller is advised.

Wasps like sweet foods, sweet drinks and meat so home owners can help to make their properties less attractive to European Wasps by: • Cleaning up any fallen fruit on a regular basis.

• Avoid leaving uneaten dog/cat food outside – including dog bones.

• Not putting out food scraps for birds and other wildlife.

• Covering up compost.

• Ensuring rubbish bin lids are fully closed.

• Taking extra precautions when having barbecues including keeping food covered.

• Drinking with straw to avoid drinking directly out of cans/bottles when outdoors.

• Working co-operatively with neighbours to locate and destroy wasp nests.

If a nest of European Wasps is disturbed, wasps will defend the nest. Nests are usually located within 500 metres of a food source and are usually found in sheltered locations such as tree hollows and buildings or may be a hole in the ground or a retaining wall. A nest built

by European Wasps resembles grey papier-mache.

Some Victorian park and forest roads and tracks closing temporarily Some roads and tracks in Victoria’s forests and parks will be temporarily closed for winter and spring from today (1 May 2015), with more to follow next month, as part of an annual program.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and Parks Victoria run the seasonal road closure program to ensure driver safety as well as protect forest and park roads from damage during the cooler months.

DELWP State Roads and Bridges Planning Manager Tony Dowler said: “Some forest roads and tracks will be closing from today, while more are closed from after the Queen’s Birthday weekend (Thursday 11 June) until just before Melbourne Cup Weekend (Thursday 29 October) when the track surfaces are most likely to be damaged by vehicles.”

“The early closures are necessary in some parts of the state because the roads and

tracks in our parks and forests have the potential to become wet,” Mr Dowler said.

“The closures are important because our forest roads and tracks become much more difficult for drivers to use safely over this period.

“Some forest tracks would suffer significant damage if they were left open all year round so we assess them each year and then after consultation with stakeholders including Four Wheel Drive Victoria close any that require it.”

Parks Victoria General Manager Regional Services Chris Rose said: “By protecting park roads and tracks we can reduce erosion and cut the amount of silt which is washed into rivers, creeks and reservoirs.”

“Four wheel driving is a fantastic way to get away from it all and reap the mental and physical benefits of connecting with Victoria’s parks and forests. To ensure

visitors have a safe and enjoyable time, while still protecting the environment, we want to ensure everyone accesses the best available information before they leave.

“Most of the roads and tracks are reopened in early November, in time for the Melbourne Cup Weekend, ” Mr Rose said.

“As always we want anyone driving in our parks and forests to stay on the designated routes, take their rubbish home and take particular care with campfires, so that everyone can enjoy Victoria’s magnificent parks.”

A tale of two towns Last August the Surf Coast town criers were invited to England to represent Australia at a commemmoration marking 100 years since the start of WW1.

“Ilfracombe Says Thank You” was held in Devon and was rated in the Top Ten of all events held in the UK.

On the way from London to Ilfracombe we stopped off in Winchelsea. Of course it is a much bigger town than ours and has a much longer history; but I didn’t find a Globe Theatre there.

Old Winchelsea stood on a shinglebank that is now submerged in Rye Bay. It was being inundated by the sea as violent storms shifted the shinglebank from under the town. So the townspeople had to move.

The ‘new’ Winchelsea was founded in 1292 by Edward 1. It became the chief port of Sussex and leader of th Cinque Ports.

Like Victoria’s Winchelsea, this town has welcomed royalty. The Duke of

Edinburgh visited Barwon Park in 1861 and Good Queen Bess visited its namesake in 1570.

John Wesley preached his last outdoor sermon there - he most likely condemned the scourge of smuggling that flourished in the area.

The English Winchelsea’s notoriety was much more coloutful than escaping rabbits!

Much of the prosperity of both the old and new towns was due to importing wine from Gascony. In 1306/7 750,000 gallons of wine flowed in; and this accounts for the large number of well-built cellars under the town.

Piracy thrived; against both foreign and English ships. Attacks by France and Spain began in 1326 with a raid that destroyed a quarter of the town. But Winchelsea survived and recovered after this and other raids in 1360 and 1380 and managed to launch violent counterattacks

on France. Smuggling thrived in to the 19th century.

This was no quiet little country hamlet!

But in the present day, as in our local township, hospitality and a love of gardening are evident.

We stayed in a lovely old B&B built in the 1400s. Our upstairs room was called ‘Smuggler’s Haunt’ and had a sloping ceiling (and floor!) The house once sat on the quay but the bay silted up and now the sea is no longer visible. The building served as the town’s workhouse for most of its life; and well into the 20th century.

It has a delightful garden and charming hosts .... so a night in the workhouse wasn’t as bad as I’d expected!

Winchelsea Community House is hosting a visit to the ’Women of Empire 1914– 1918’ exhibition at the National Wool Museum in Geelong on Tuesday 12th of May 2015. We will be providing a FREE bus service to the exhibition, leaving Winchelsea Community House at 10 am and returning approximately 2pm.

Winchelsea Community House will be trialling a drop in service on Friday mornings from 10am till 12 noon during term 2 for people requiring assistance with basic Computer issues, mobile phone issues, IPAD issues etc. The mentor will be Tony Phelps who is volunteering his time to be available to assist with minor issues or to be able to refer to where help can be obtained from. Lest We Forget

This will be a continuing series commemorating the anniversary of the death of our local servicemen and women.

Cyril Patrick Tabor Keenan

Killed in action on the 8th May 1915 Gallipoli

Killed in action on the 10th May 1915 Gallipoli

Arthur Elkington was born in Winchelsea on 12/5/1895.

Son of Victor and Lavinia Elkington nee Gladman. Arthur’s Grandfather John Elkington arrived in Port Phillip in 1852 from London. By 1860 he was Treasurer and Secretary of Winchelsea Shire. When John retired his son Victor took over his position at the Shire from 1874 to 1887 after which the family moved to Richmond Victoria. Arthur was in the senior cadets and citizens forces. He worked as a warehouse manager in Richmond.

Cyril Keenan was born in Winchelsea on 2/5/1891. Son of Edward Thomas and Elizabeth Jane Keenan nee Morgan. On his birth certificate his father gave his occupation as Publican and from records seems to have died in 1911.

Arthur enlisted in Melbourne on 17/8/1914 putting his age up from 19 to 20. He sailed from Melbourne on 19/10/1914 with the 6th Battalion. After training in Egypt he arrived in Gallipoli on 8/5/1915. He was killed on the same day along with over one thousand of his fellow Australians and New Zealanders. He was four days from his 20th birthday.

Arthur is commemorated on the Helles Memorial , Gallipoli.

Cyril enlisted on 15/12/1914 in Geelong. He did his training in Broadmeadows and was assigned to the 6th Battalion, 3rd reinforcements. He embarked from Melbourne on the 19/2/1915 and arrived at Gallipoli on 7/5/1915 just in time to be included in the second battle for Krithia Village, a small Greek village on the tip of the Cape Helles Peninsular held by the Turks. They were given thirty five minutes to prepare for the battle to help the British.

Cyril was wounded and later died on 10/5/1915. He is buried near Morto Bay about 400 yards from Gallipoli.

Golden Wattle Our work to develop a memorial to VC winners and local veterans continues a-pace. The RSL Executive has developed a vision for this space in the town. You will appreciate we need to bring these ideas to our members and other key town groups before making our plans available for public input.

Funding available at present is tied to commemoration of the VC winners of the Great War. This gives us a wonderful starting point for us to include pre and post World War I winners as well as local veterans at a later date. With additional fundraising hopefully further adjustments to the space will continue into the future.

Remembering the fallen can be done at any time in any place. This one day of the year commemoration on April 25th is made special to us by the ceremony and those who gather with us. Thank you all.

A comment was made to me that the Torquay Dawn Service is “a proper service”. Let me assure you we do not provide “an improper service”. Dawn Services are very moving. We do our best to provide a service that firstly suits our local veterans who made that promise to always remember and then to suit the locals. We will continue to evolve our service to include public involvement. Our ritual is laid down by the RSL Australia for ALL ANZAC DAY SERVICES. There is no competition.

We appreciate that you have made an act of remembrance and thanks anywhere, anytime publically or privately.

The Modewarre rededication of the Avenue of Honour showed the will of the people to remember. This was a big but important task for those involved.

I will report on the Anzac Day awards next week.

As usual the Winchelsea community dug deep to support our token sales. This money goes only to veterans and their dependants. Thank you to those who manned the sales in the street as well as the Macguires, IGA and Debbie, Medical Centre and Hesse Rural Health and Marcia. Final total to come.

The Anzac Day refreshments are always paid for by the WRSL from the general fund from subscriptions and donations by members. The footy ladies Libby Leak, Caroline and team provided a super spread. Thanks to those who chipped in and waited upon.

May is a busy month with a trip to Beeac and Eurack Avenue of Honour as well as to Werribee to the Liberator Museum. The Executive and some veterans were present at Hesse Rural Health for “arvo smoko” to put a public face to the WRSL. We also welcome back Jim Carroll from his travels to Gallipoli. The fortnight away passed so quickly. Not so for those earlier diggers who visited Gallipoli.

Our work recording veteran’s stories and education continues. We have many ideas but it must be understood, apart from commemoration our next focus MUST be on the welfare of our veterans and providing opportunities to enrich their lives. They are our living treasures. We rely upon you to assist us in this honour.

I have been trying to type this notice for a few weeks now and, even now, it doesn’t do everyone justice! I have been overwhelmed with the support and kindness of this small community of Winchelsea after losing my partner of 13 years Ron Dalrymple. The phone calls, the flowers, the cards, the food and the general support from you all has been truly inspiring for my family and I during this trying time. A special thank you must go out to the Wingeel CFA, The Staff at Winchelsea Community House, Farstad Shipping Pty Ltd, the group of Mums from Winch that cooked all that food and stocked our freezer (you know who you are!!!!), Winch IGA, The Staff at the Bendigo Bank Winchelsea Branch and Winchelsea Primary School – THANKYOU SO VERY MUCH! This community is truly amazing and please know that – god forbid – if this ever happens to you, I will be there to show you the same support you have shown me. Thankyou Winch!!!

Barwon Park Dairying In living memory the Batsons had 1 or 2 house cows. However, judging from the relics left behind it appears the Batson family, probably in the 1920s-30s, ran a much bigger dairying operation than a couple of house cows. The construction of the milking shed is very similar to that of the Batson shearing shed and poultry shed so probably it was built at the same time.

As the photo of a New Zealand milking shows, Barwon Park milking shed was a typical world wide design that didn’t change much until the introduction of “walk-through” bails in the 1940’s.

The milking shed is quite large with 3 bails operational. To entice the cows in, feed was placed in the manger. Once the cow put her head into the manger to get the feed it was fastened into the bail by pulling the piece of timber over and securing it with a bolt. The original bolts are still there. Her hind leg nearest the milker was pulled back

been stored in a tank or buckets until it could be separated. There is no sign of a milk tank but it is believed there were a number of milking pails in the dairy when the National Trust took possession of the property.

The dairy, (located at the rear of the courtyard, LHS.) is a beautiful history of old time dairy farming. The design of the room enables the milk to be kept cool in absence of refrigeration. The Lister separator (it still “dings!”) was considered the “Rolls Royce” of dairy separators and would easily handle 30 cows. Milk would be poured into the separator bowl and a cream can would be placed under the upper spout for the cream with a bucket positioned under the lower spout to catch the skim milk. Jersey milk is about 4-5% butter fat so each milking, if the estimate of 30 cows is correct, would produce about 10 litres of cream. The cream cans

Wednesday evening Bible discussion group 7pm exploring 1 Corinthians. to prevent kicking and the tail was secured to prevent the milker being swished when flies annoyed the cow. There is no sign of any milking machines so it is probable all milking was done by hand.

A good milker would spend a little under 10 minutes per cow so, with 3 bails, it is probable that there were about 30 cows to be milked in the 90 minutes that most dairy farms allocated to milking morning and night. It is highly likely that the cows would have been jerseys as they produced milk very high in butter fat. Jerseys produce about 6 to 7 litres of milk per milking so there would be about 200 litres of milk per session. This milk would have

are branded with Syd Batson’s name so they could be returned after their visit to the Birregurra butter factory. Also in the dairy is a butter churn that was probably used during the “house cow era” when the Batsons no longer sent their cream to the butter factory. Some of the skim milk was fed to the calves but it is probable pigs were some where on the property for the excess milk.

Senior Citizens News Hello everyone, Hope you are all geared up in anticipation of our annual holiday. Some of us are heading north for the winter (lucky souls) some are heading west, south and even Tasmania to celebrate a birthday.

Does feeling ‘ok’ mean that I am ‘ok’?!

As busy adults we often find it hard to priorities our health- but an absence of symptoms does not mean there is an absence of stress on our bodies. Life can get chaotic and hectic so much in fact that we are unable to hear the subtle messages (symptoms) our bodies are giving us, we cast them aside as “normal pains”, or “normal headaches” or “I’m just getting old” or, “I’m just a bit stiff.”

Sound familiar? This is our body telling us it needs change. Often times when we finally do take note of these signals and cover them up with medications, we are setting ourselves up for a bigger health problem down the track. Ask yourself this question; if a person in pain takes a pill and the pain goes away, does this mean he or she is healthy again? When our body experiences symptoms we need to consider the cause.

Ever been to the dentist and felt ok only to find you had a hole in your tooth that

needed filling, or ever heard of someone who ‘felt fine’ only to find out they have diabetes, or worse yet, cancer?!

Appearances can be deceiving. Health cannot be measured by how we feel but rather how well our body is coping with the stressors in our lifestyles and environments, that we are placing on it.

Netball Notes

W.F.N.C. Netball Report Round 3. A.N.Z.A.C. Day 2015.

We travelled to North Geelong this week expecting to face some very strong junior sides and perhaps quite a bit of physicality in the senior grades. North Geelong certainly delivered this to us but we managed to stay strong and bring home three wins, A, B and 15 & Under.

All other sides gave everything but just couldn’t get over the line.

A Grade Winchelsea 43 def North Geelong 16 A physical windy game with strong defence from both teams caused at low scoring start and we took a little while to get our game flow. Janelle Birch and Maddy Huggins combined well in the defensive circle causing many turnovers and opportunities which was supported with the inclusion of Lillian Kent in the 3rd quarter. Tahlia Berg provided strong drive and strength in the attacking end and delivered the ball well to our goalers.

We started off a little slow only being one goal up at quarter time but a smashing second quarter had us up 22 to 7, a lead which North Geelong just couldn’t peg back. With our defenders starving North Geelong of goals our goalers were given many opportunities which enabled us to comfortably out score North in the second half. Karlee DeBono proved to be a real strength throughout the centre court during the entire game. In the end we had a convincing win but will need to improve our shooting accuracy if we want to match it with Werribee next week.

B Grade Winchelsea 33 def North Geelong 30 After a very disappointing loss last week B Grade faced top spot North Geelong and knew this wouldn’t be an easy win either, although a good draw perhaps showed North Geelong to be a little better than they are. B Grade again were terribly slow to get started dropping the first quarter 10-4 and giving North real confidence. We just couldn’t get the goals

on the board and lots of whistle enabled North to score too easily. We were goal for goal in the second and third quarter but seemed to be producing more scoring opportunities but couldn’t peg back North’s great start. North Geelong started to cut up a bit rough in the third as we started to get more competitive and we held our composure and went into the last quarter 5 goals down and knowing it was a big ask. Showing some great character we really got it together in the last quarter and snatched the win by 3 goals. Angie Mawson drove hard all day and teamed up well with Sarah Todd in Goal Attack, whilst Tori Hose bounced back from a tough start to really shine in the last.

C Grade North Geelong 35 def Winchelsea 20 We started with a change to our combinations as our attacking end is struggling to convert. Holly McFarlane started in Centre with Amanda Carroll in Wing Attack, this combination worked well with Amanda being a short sharp player and Holly being a tall agile player. Danielle Kuchenmeister started in Goal Attack offering strong leads and movement around the front of the goal circle, while Amanda Partridge found it difficult to move around the tall GK. Once she was able to play front and keep her position, the girls managed to be able to feed into her. Our defenders did a great job but we just couldn’t cut off enough drives before the ball entered the goal circle to the tall holding shooter. Next week we will take on a strong Werribee with our full bench so we can rotate fresh legs through the game.

D Grade North Geelong 35 def Winchelsea 25 Our 3rd loss for the season which is not what we wanted today. The game didn’t start off as strong as we had hoped, Ann

Morgan was not keeping up with her player and found it hard to dodge as she had a toe injury. Josie McDonald came on the court to attempt to shut down the Goal Attack and did a great job. Kim Tennant in Goal Keeper pressured her player well. Tilly Campana had a fantastic game playing very tight on her opponent taking her out of the play a lot. Claire Round and Kim Allen had a great game controlling the court with Kellie Steere helping out with her strong leads. Our shooters, Lyndal O’Grady and Lesley Mathison worked well together, they had plenty of opportunities but couldn’t convert all into goals. Overall the game was physical and our fitness again let us down in the last quarter. We broke to a max run of 3 goals in the 3rd quarter then allowed the Goal shooter to shoot a run of 3 and another 4 goals in the final quarter.

17 & Under North Geelong 34 def Winchelsea 5 North Geelong were just too good for our newly formed team this week and unfortunately they snatched the win from under us. Connie Royal did extremely well on their talented goal attack and did her best to shut her down however getting it through North’s strong mid court was a challenge for our entire team. Our 3 goalers Lilly Connors-Southall, Caitlin Burgess and Romy Fawcett rotated well throughout the game and improvement is already evident in our young goalers.

We have a lot to work on but with the dedicated group of girls in the team we are looking forward to increasing our skills and becoming a more challenging opposition to other clubs. Werribee this week will be another tough game but our positive team is looking forward to the challenge!

Barwon Park - Stables Volunteers Be part of the history of horse breeding at Barwon Park Do you like history, things ‘horsey’ and the smell of leather? Barwon Park is looking for volunteers to care for and maintain its stables.

The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) is an independent, non-profit organisation supported by a large community base.

We are Victoria’s premier heritage and conservation organisation.

Thomas Austin was on the committee which decided that the 1st August would be the birth date for all racing horses.

Elizabeth Austin travelled regularly to Winchelsea in a Brougham carriage which is housed in the stables’ Coach House. It is in remarkable condition for its age.

The stables at Barwon Park were built for Thomas and Elizabeth Austin at the same time as their magnificent Mansion in 1871. The substantial bluestone stables consist of Coach House, stalls, foaling stalls, groom’s room, hay loft and tack room.

Volunteers will be involved in: • keeping the stables clean and tidy, • maintaining the tool display, • caring for the original 1860’s carriage and other buggies, • maintaining a selection of saddles including side saddles and children’s saddles, • welcoming visitors to the stables and talking about its history.

Hannah Millar was a stand out in wing defence and worked hard all day causing multiple turnovers for the team. Amy Hobbs did a great job feeding the ball into

Mia Robertson but were we just weren’t able to capitalise on it every time. Georgia Glynn and Maddison Kattwinkel were kept very busy in the defence circle and worked hard all day. Congratulations to Hayley Steed who stepped up into centre and played a wonderful game and was awarded our “player of the week” this week along with Hannah Millar. Great jobs girls in keeping a positive attitude in a tough game.

The Colts enjoyed a week off this round due to a bye. This was the last round of the grading matches, so the Team will receive notification of where it’s been placed in the competition shortly.

In warm & windy conditions the Blues put a good competitive effort into the 1st half of the match, but the 3rd quarter was when Nth Geelong were allowed to do whatever they liked, with the result showing on the scoreboard. Angus breeders inspect cutting edge genetics Australia’s leading Angus breeders analysed the data and eyeballed the calf drop of the latest genetics out of the US and Australia this week in order to steer the future direction of the breed.

About 130 breeders from 60 of Australia’s top line Angus studs converged on Murdeduke Angus, Winchelsea, on Monday to inspect progeny by the powerhouse sires out of the ABS Global battery.

Murdeduke genetics manager Simon Falkiner said the stud was honoured to showcase elite genetics for the world’s premier semen supplier.

On show were large runs of pregnancytested-in-calf heifers and 2014-drop mixed sex weaners demonstrating the attributes of super sires such as KM Broken Bow 002, Te Mania Emperor E343, Rennylea Edmund E11 and Milwillah Gatsby.

Stud breeders were able to digest pedigree and performance data, and establish a pecking order for the industry’s hottest sires.

Field day visitors voted the stand out sire groups as Te Mania Emperor and Broken Bow. The top rated heifer was a Broken Bow out of an Ada daughter, followed by an Emperor heifer out of a Tiger daughter.

Simon Falkiner said progeny of Ardrossan Equator A241, Rennylea Edmund E11 and Docklands were also well supported by the Australian stud breeders.

He said Murdeduke was well placed to offer large drafts of the preferred sire groups over the next two years.

Ben Lohmann said Australian breeders were one of the biggest users of US Angus genetics outside of North America.

“This is an awesome opportunity to compare and contrast bulls used in the US with what is happening in Australia,’’ he said.

“There has been a keen interest in what we are bringing in and (Australia stud breeders) are studying the bulls to see what can fit in programs over here.’’

Since 1977

Mr Lohmann said the most progressive Australian genetics were in turn being evaluated to see how they might fit US markets.

He said Australians were looking for outcross genetics with growth, performance and carcass.

“Fundamentally the two things growing quickly in the US are calving ease and docility,’’ he said.

Mr Lohmann said historically high cattle prices had translated into commercial producers paying US$7000-$10,000 for bulls.

Victorian commercial producer Brad Gilmour runs a 1000 cow Angus herd at Terang and was interested in the proven and new sires for use in his artificial insemination program this season.

“In my sire selection, I look for a balanced spread of birth to growth EBVs and good structure,’’ he said.
