REFLECTIONS CURAÇAO

INLEIDING

Op een dag in maart, 2016, stond ik voor de zoveelste keer weer eens stil voor het schilderij “Interieur Snoa” dat Wim Snelders zo’n 30 jaar geleden voor ons heeft gemaakt.

Ik dacht die dag aan wat Terpen Tijn, de flamboyante en excentrieke schilder uit de strips van Ollie B. Bommel, ooit beweerde: “Het vibreert, de trilling zit nog in de ... eh ... dinges”. Het was waar, het schilderij van Wim vibreerde nog steeds en de trilling, ...nou ja, die zat nog in de dinges, dus.

Of het toeval was of telepathie weet ik niet maar later die dag kreeg ik een telefoontje: “Met Wim Snelders. Ik ben op Curaçao, samen met mijn vriendin. Laten we een afspraak maken”.

Zo vernieuwde het contact met Wim dat enigszins wat verwaterd was na zijn vertrek van Curaçao in 1987.

Na ongeveer dertig jaar afwezigheid op Curaçao nam hij terstond weer de draad op, niet alleen met het opzoeken van oude vrienden maar struinde ook stad weer af, miste West End, miste de Vijf Zinnen, werd ongetwijfeld droef van Cinelandia, keek goed rond, maakte schetsjes en had, ‘voilà’, binnen een jaar voldoende materiaal voor een expositie. Resultaat is deze kersverse tentoonstelling in Bloemhof waar hij zijn laatste werk laat zien.

Als voorproefje, want hoe kun je anders een inleiding schrijven, kreeg ik online de concept catalogus. Een catalogus kan heel mooi zijn en prachtige foto’s bevatten, maar op het computerscherm vibreren, nee, laat staan de trilling in de ... eh dinges. Daarom ben ik zeer benieuwd hoe het

werk er in het echt uitziet en of het vibreert.

Het ene deel van de schilderijen bestaat uit gemengd werk, voornamelijk de wijk Pietermaai, het andere deel uit schilderijen, impressies van de stad en het eiland.

Dat Pietermaai een belangrijk onderdeel van de expositie is, is niet zo verwonderlijk.

Pietermaai moet voor Wim een openbaring geweest zijn. In de jaren tachtig was de wijk totaal in verval, nu is het het meest bruisende stukje binnenstad. Dit in tegenstelling met Punda waar zo nu en dan wat cruisetoeristen in de koeienletters op het Wilhelminaplein staan om gefotografeerd te worden en waar het ’s avonds nog leger is dan het Gomezplein overdag.

Toch wordt er dit jaar, omdat Willemstad twintig jaar op de Wereld Erfgoedlijst staat, een Open Monumentendag in Punda georganiseerd.

Punda dan zal dan een dagje vibreren en trillen, maar dan, de dag daarna... het oude liedje ... klerewinkels en fastfoodverkooppunten.

Hoe mooi zou Punda zijn met op het Gomezplein een schijnwerkerszaak, een goudsmid, een galerij, een jazzcafé en last but not least het atelier van Wim Snelders, pal naast dat van Terpen Tijn.

Toekomstmuziek?

Laat Bloemhof in maart 2017 maar eerst vibreren.

INTRODUCTION

One day in March 2016 I stopped, for the umpteenth time, to look at the painting “Interior Snoa”, which Wim Snelders had made for us some 30 years ago.

That day I thought of what Terpen Tijn, the flamboyant and eccentric artist from the Ollie B. Bommel comic strip, had once alleged: “It vibrates, the vibrancy is still in the …. eh … thingy bob”. It was true, Wim Snelders’s painting still vibrates and the vibrancy, …… well yes, that was still noticeable in the thingy bob”.

Whether it was pure coincidence or telepathy I don’t know but later that day I got a call: “It’s Wim Snelders. I am on Curaçao, together with my girlfriend. Let’s meet up”.

This is how the somewhat decelerated contact with Wim, after he had left Curaçao in 1987, was rekindled.

After an almost 30-year absence from Curaçao, he instantly picked up where he had left off, not only by looking up old friends but also roaming around the town, where he missed the West End as well as the Vijf Zinnen, and undoubtedly was saddened by Cinelandia. He had a good look around, made sketches and had, ‘just like that’, within a year enough material for an exhibition. The result: a new exhibition at Bloemhof where his latest work can be seen.

As a taster, otherwise how can you write an introduction, I got a digital draft of his catalogue.

A catalogue can be very nice and contain beautiful photographs, but vibrating on a computer screen – no, let alone vibrating in the – eh thingy bob.

That’s why I am very curious to see what the work is like in real life and whether it vibrates.

One part of the works are mixed media pieces - mainly of the Pietermaai neighbourhood, the other part are paintings of impressions of the town and the island.

Not surprisingly Pietermaai forms an important part of the exhibition. Pietermaai must have been a revelation for Wim. In the ‘80s the neighbourhood was totally derelict but now it is the most buzzing part of the centre. Contrary to Punda where now and then cruise ship tourists are photographed in front of the ginormous letters on the Wilhelminaplein and where at night it is emptier than the Gomezplein during the day.

Nevertheless, and because Willemstad has been on the world heritage list for 20 years, an Open Monument Day in Punda has been organised this year.

No doubt Punda will then vibrate and tremble for a day, but then, the day after …. the same old song ----- crappy shops and fast food restaurants.

How nice Punda would be if the Gomezplein had a joinery shop, a goldsmith, a gallery, a jazz café and last but not least Wim Snelders’ studio right next to Terpen Tijn’s.

Pie in the sky?

But first, let Bloemhof vibrate in March 2017.

PERSOONLIJKE NOOT

Voor mij is Willemstad met al zijn drukte en kleurrijke verschillen nog steeds een plezier om te tekenen en te schilderen. Zo geniet ik weer van de dynamiek rond de Annabaai, de schoonheid van een gebouw, het licht in een steeg, het rijke kleurenpalet en de samenspraak van details en vorm. Maar ook de stilte, een vergezicht, een hobbelweg, een enkele boom of stoere berg zomaar ergens in het buitengebied raken me nog steeds.

In de tentoonstelling in Landhuis Bloemhof laat ik de werken zien die het afgelopen jaar zijn ontstaan toen ik Curaçao na lange tijd weer bezocht. Mijn werk is een lofzang op de stad en op het omringend landschap, dat voor mij onlosmakelijk met die stad verbonden is.

In de jaren 80 van de vorige eeuw exposeerde ik in Het Curaçaosch Museum, Gallery 86 en Avila Beach. Ik bezong de schoonheid van de binnenstad en het landschap in mijn schilderijen van onder meer de stegen in Otrobanda en het landschap bij San Pedro en Santa Martha. Dat is nu niet anders, maar door mijn ervaring als architect en stedenbouwer kijk ik, na zo veel jaar, anders tegen diezelfde stad en het landschap aan. Ik zie stad en land niet meer als gescheiden delen, maar als één geheel waarin naast het samenspel van

gebouwen, straten, stegen, pleinen en bomen ook de bergen, buurten en wegen een plaats (moeten) hebben.

Niet alleen is mijn blik op de stad veranderd, ook de stad zelf is de afgelopen 25 jaar getransformeerd. Gelukkig zijn veel monumenten hersteld en zijn er enkele grote projecten gerealiseerd zoals het Kura Hulanda, Brionplein en het Riffort met Renaissance Hotel. Aan deze projecten zit voor mij ook een keerzijde. Zo zie je dat andere delen van de stad in verval raken door het vertrek van winkels (zoals in Punda duidelijk is) en dat Kura Hulanda een afgesloten deel is geworden van het eens volkse Otrobanda. Ook denk ik dat de gebouwen nog te veel worden beschouwd als een uitstalkast voor toeristen en de stad te weinig functioneert als het forum van alle bewoners voor het leven en werk van alledag.

Historisch gezien, en nog steeds voelbaar, zijn er vele functionele verbindingen tussen de stad en het buitengebied. Een weg, landhuis, baai of berg maakte deel uit van de kaart van het land. Juist in die samenhang van stad en land schuilt voor mij het onderscheidende karakter van Curaçao. In ons hoofd vormen we zo’n ‘mental map’ als we aan Willemstad of Curaçao denken.

PERSONAL NOTE

It is still a pleasure for me to draw and paint Willemstad, a town with all its bustle and colourful diversities. Once again, I enjoy the dynamics around Annabaai, the beauty of a building, the light shining through an alleyway, the rich colour palette and the dialogue of details and shapes. But also, what still touches me: the silence, a vista, a bumpy road, a single tree or a robust mountain ad hoc somewhere in the rural zone.

At Landhuis Bloemhof’s exhibition I show works, which were generated during the past year when, after a long absence, I visited Curaçao again. My work is a eulogy to the town and its surrounding landscape, which, in my view, is indissolubly connected to the town.

In the 80s of the last century I exhibited at The Curaçaosch Museum, Gallery 86 and Avila Beach. In my paintings, I praised the beauty of the inner city and the landscape of among other things the alleyways in Otrobanda and San Pedro’s and Santa Martha’s landscape. It is no different now but, because of my experience as an architect and urban developer, I, after so many years, look differently at the same town and landscape. I no longer see the town and landscape as

separated but as one unit, where the combined activities of buildings, streets, alleyways, squares, trees as well as the mountains, neighbourhoods and roads, (must) have a place.

Not only has my view of the town changed, but the town itself has, in the last 25 years, been transformed. Luckily many monuments have been restored and several large projects, such as Kura Hulanda, Brionplein and the Riffort with the Renaissance Hotel, have been realised. However, I feel that there is also a drawback to these projects. It is obvious that other parts of the town are deteriorating due the fact that shops (such as in Punda) and that Kura Hulanda have been cut and shut off from the popular neighbourhood of Otrobanda. I also think that buildings are being regarded as a showcase for tourists and that the town doesn’t function enough as an everyday life and work platform for all the island’s inhabitants.

Historically seen, and still tangible, are the many functional connections between the town and the surrounding landscape. A road, a country house, bay or mountain are part of the country’s map. Exactly in this cohesion of town and country hides Curaçao’s distinctive character. When we think of Willemstad or Curaçao we form such a ‘mental map’.

Van Pietermaai maakte ik een serie collages van geverfd en geknipt papier en inkt. Deze serie laat gebouwen of gebouwdelen zien. Gebouwen die als het ware tegen elkaar leunen en, hoe verschillend ook, hun liefde aan elkaar verklaren.

In een ander deel van deze serie ligt de nadruk op onderdelen van diezelfde gebouwen zoals balkons, kolommen, buitentrappen, sierlijsten en balustrades. Deze meer analytische werken zijn een ode aan de architectuur en de detaillering.

Zo vertellen de details ieder een eigen verhaal en, in de gereedschapskist van de architect, zijn ze de instrumenten voor steeds weer een kleurrijk concert. In deze serie werken heb ik verwijzingen verwerkt uit het architectuurverleden van Curaçao. Ze zijn afkomstig uit een kleurrijke folder die ik in de jaren 80 van de vorige eeuw samen met Anko van der Woude heb opgesteld voor het maken van architectuurwandelingen in Punda en Otrobanda.

Deze werken op papier roepen onwillekeurig associaties op met een tijd waarin hier nog volop werd gewoond en gewerkt. Zo kan je je voorstellen dat zich bijvoorbeeld op Pietermaai balkonscènes hebben voorgedaan, dat je contact had met voorbijgangers of met een buur op de stoep voor het huis, of dat je misschien gewoon nieuwsgierig was naar wat zich afspeelde in het donker achter het houten filigreinwerk of de geopende deuren.

Maar ook vandaag nog heb je de neiging Bon Dia! (Goedemorgen!) uit te roepen als je de luiken van je hotelkamer opent of Bon Tardi! (Goedemiddag) als je s’ middags door de steeg naar zee loopt.

Pietermaai: I made a series of collages of painted, cut paper as well as ink. This series shows buildings or parts of a building. Buildings which appear to be leaning against each other and, however different, declare each other their love. In another part of this series the emphasis is on parts of the same buildings such as balconies, pillars, external staircases, decorative mouldings and balustrades. These more analytical works are an ode to architecture and detailing. Each detail tells its own story and, in the architect’s toolbox, they are the instruments for a repeatedly colourful concert. In this series, I have incorporated references from Curaçao’s architectural past.

They originate from a colourful brochure which Anko van der Woude and I made for a series of architectural walks in Punda and Otrobanda in the 80ties of the last century.

These works on paper evoke unintentional associations with a time in which one lived and worked with abundance. As you can imagine that for example at Pietermaai balcony scenes occurred; you were in contact with passers-by or with a neighbour on the pavement in front of the house, or were you just curious as to what was happening in the dark behind the wooden filigree work or the open doors. Even today you are tempted to call out Bon Dia! (good morning) when you open the shutters of your hotel room or Bon Tardi! (good afternoon) when, in the afternoon, you walk through the alleyway to the beach.

In mijn schilderijen heb ik niet naar details gekeken, maar naar een deel van de stad, een straat of steeg. Ik geef geen exacte weergave van de werkelijkheid maar schets een beeld dat ergens in ons collectief geheugen opgeslagen zou kunnen liggen. Het zijn herinneringen met een eigen harmonie, vrij vertaald in kleur en compositie; strak of juist losjes, al naar gelang de plek in de stad.

In Otrobanda wordt het beeld voor mij bepaald door de losse opbouw van de huizen en door veel groen. In één vloeiende en uitdijende beweging gaan hier oker en oranjeroodkleurige vlekken in elkaar over, resulterend in één samenhangend droombeeld.

In Pietermaai viel mij op dat het groen veel dunner is gezaaid en dat hoge èn lage bebouwingen elkaar afwisselen. Het beeld lijkt hierdoor veel compacter en abstracter dan in Otrobanda.

Muurvlakken in effen of bonte kleuren waar het licht op danst en die ingekaderd worden door de hoge randen van aanpalende gebouwen leveren abstracte composities op. In de hoofdstraten gaan details en balkons een eigen leven leiden en roepen ze bij mij associaties op met een melancholische jazzy sfeer.

Op Altena kan ik de bebouwing niet los zien van de begraafplaats. Zij horen bij elkaar, ingeleid door de Panaderia en de Funeraria, die hier ooit in één pand waren gevestigd op het Julianaplein. Het is alsof er op deze plek altijd hoop is en het leven na de dood werkelijkheid kan worden. Het do, re, mi, fa sol van de woningen op Altena klinkt voor mij als het begin van een prachtige levenswals.

Banda Abao en Banda Ariba horen voor mij bij de stad. Zoals bijvoorbeeld de golvende weg, met zijn eigen geschiedenis, naar Landhuis Kenepa, maar ook de huizenzee bij Seru Grandi en de strak omhooglopende weg bij Brakke Put die de huizen op een natuurlijke manier aaneenrijgt. Deze wonderschone omgeving roept een bijzonder gevoel op.

In my paintings, I didn’t look at the details but more to a part of the town, a street or an alleyway. It is not an exact depiction of the reality but a sketch or an image that is stored somewhere in our collective memory. They are memories each with its own harmony, freely translated in colour and composition; abstract or just loosely, depending the location in the town.

In Otrobanda I defined the image because of the loose construction of the houses and the greenery. In one flowing expanding movement ochre and orange-red coloured stains flow smoothly into one another, resulting in one coherent chimera.

At Pietermaai it caught my eye that there is only sporadic greenery and that high and low buildings alternate. Because of this, the image seems much compacter and abstract than in Otrobanda.

Walls in plain, bright colours upon which light dances and framed by the tall corners of adjacent buildings, result in abstract compositions.

In the main streets details and balconies lead their own life and this arouses associations in me of a melancholic jazzy atmosphere.

At Altena I can’t separate the buildings from the cemetery. They belong together, instituted by the Panaderia and the Funeraria, which were once situated in one property on the Julianaplein. It seems as if there is always hope in this spot and that life after death can become a reality. It’s the do, re, mi fa sol of the dwellings on Altena which sound to me as a beginning of a beautiful waltz of life.

Banda Abao and Banda Ariba are, in my opinion, part of the town. Such as for example the undulating road, with its own history, to Landhuis Kenepa, the developing sea of houses near Seru Grandi and the ascending road at Brakke Put which naturally links the houses. These wonderful surroundings have a special impact.

KORTE HISTORIE

PERSONAL HISTORY

Ik studeerde bouwkunde aan de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven en volgde cursussen aan o.a de Vrije Academie in Den Haag, de Wackers Academie in Amsterdam, de Internationale Zomer Academie in Salzburg en de St. Ives School of Painting in het Verenigd Koninkrijk. In 1984 en de jaren erna exposeerde ik o.a. in het Curaçaosch Museum, Galerie 86 en Avila Beach. In Nederland exposeerde ik o.a. in Kunsthuis 9 Leuvenheim, Ziekenhuisgroep Twente, Galerie de Witte kamer in Delden, Walls, De Nieuwe Poort en Podium Mozaïek in Amsterdam en in Het Kunstfort in Vijfhuizen. In 2015 was ik uitgenodigd om te exposren in CIRCLE Contemporary in Wadebridge, Cornwall, Verenigd Koninkrijk.

Midden jaren 80 van de vorige eeuw werkte ik als architect en stedenbouwer voor de Dienst Ruimtelijke Ontwikkeling en Volkshuisvesting (DROV) van het Eilandgebied Curaçao. Onder de bezielende leiding van Luki Butot ontwikkelde ik een Aktieplan voor het herstel van de Binnenstad en het Rif. Het doel was om mensen weer naar de binnenstad te krijgen en de stad aantrekkelijk te maken voor het toerisme. Goede woningen en een goede infrastructuur in een fraaie omgeving.

Vele projecten werden geïnitieerd zoals monumentenherstel, woningbouw en landscaping.

Toerisme en bewoning moesten de economische motor van de binnenstad weer aanzwengelen. Vrij spoedig kwamen de eerste projecten met name in Otrobanda tot uitvoering.

Eind jaren 80 werkte ik in Indonesië aan integrale stadsontwikkeling voor kleine en middelgrote steden tot 1 miljoen inwoners op Java en Bali. In de jaren 90 tot recent werkte ik aan vele stedelijk management- en ontwikkelingsprojecten in en buiten Nederland voor ontwikkelaars, particulieren en overheden.

I was educated as an architect and planner at the Eindhoven Technical University, The Netherlands and followed various art courses at e.g. the Psychopolis Art Academy in The Hague, the International Summer School in Salzburg and the St Ives School of Painting in St Ives, UK. From 1984 I exhibited at a.o. the Curacao Museum, Galerie 86 and Avila Beach. In The Netherlands I exhibited at a.o. the Kunsthuis9 in Leuvenheim, Ziekenhuisgroep Twente, Galerie de Witte Kamer in Delden, Walls Art Space, De Nieuwe Poort and Podium Mozaïek in Amsterdam as well as at Het Kunstfort, Vijfhuizen. In 2015 I was invited to exhibit at CIRCLE Contemporary Gallery in Wadebridge, Cornwall, UK. In the mid-80s of the last century I worked as an architect and planner at DROV for the Island region of Curaçao. Under Luki Butot’s inspiring guidance I developed a plan of action for the renovation of the town centre and the Rif. The aim was to get people back to the city centre and make the it attractive for tourism. Proper houses and a good infrastructure in splendid surroundings. Many projects, such as restauration of monuments, housing and landscaping were started. Tourism and habitation were to re-boost the economic engine of the town centre.

The first projects, especially in Otrobanda, were implemented.

At the end of the 80s I worked in Indonesia on the integral city development for small to medium sized towns with up to 1 million inhabitants on the islands of Java and Bali.

From the 90s onwards I worked on many urban management and development projects for developers, private individuals and government in both The Netherlands and abroad.
