A VERY WARM WELCOME BACK TO A LIVE WIMBLEDON INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL It gives me great pleasure to announce that we’re back with a full programme, live in Wimbledon from Saturday 13 until Sunday 28 November 2021. Our annual celebration aims to create a spirit of community through the shared experience of live music-making by some of the most celebrated performers of our time. There is something for everyone to enjoy, with performances by internationally acclaimed artists including the charismatic bass-baritone Sir Willard White with this latest musical journey ‘From Rags to Riches’. Dame Imogen Cooper shares her love of Schubert and Ravel’s piano music, and the Russian virtuoso Nikolai Demidenko joins the Philharmonia Orchestra in Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ piano concerto. The Tertis Recital this year features one of the ‘kings’ of the instrument, Maxim Rysanov, and the Tallis Scholars, Heath Quartet and Florilegium are others coming to delight you. The Julian Bliss Septet pays tribute to the pioneer of American swing, Benny Goodman, and the Festival ends with an evening of tango created by Strictly Come Dancing’s Leandro Palou, celebrating the centenary of Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla. “To see is a creative operation, requiring an effort” wrote Henri Matisse. To listen is also a creative operation, and the effort can bring immense rewards. You don’t have to ‘know’ anything about brush strokes or colour harmonies for a painting to delight your senses. You don’t need to know anything about classical music for it to stir your emotions. I’m very much looking forward to sharing some wonderful, live music with you in November. Anthony Wilkinson Festival Director
A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN
The very best way to support the Wimbledon International Music Festival is to come and enjoy as many concerts as you can, live. Ticket sales are our main source of earned income, but this only covers about half of our costs. The Festival is grateful for the wonderful support of our loyal group of Benefactors and Friends, The Taylor Family Foundation, and our long-standing event partners Marcus Beale Architects, Robert Holmes, WSM Private Clients, Stephen and Vicky Streater, and above all to our major benefactors The Tertis Foundation. Music used to be the realm of the privileged – musicians were engaged and composers paid by the aristocrats and the courts. Since Beethoven, Paganini, and Liszt, a wider audience developed, until today music of all genres has become a profession: musicians, performing rights, administration, designers, publicists, venues, heating, lighting, sound systems all have to be paid for. There is nothing that artists like better than to perform to full houses, and we benefit from the ticket sales that go with them. When booking, please treat yourselves to tickets for an additional event, and be our best ambassadors by telling your friends. Andrew Lenon Chairman
COVID-19 COMPLIANCE POLICY While we hope to bring a full live festival in November 2021, the Wimbledon International Music Festival will abide by all Covid-19 government instruction in force at the time. If social distancing is in force, some of the larger concerts will unfortunately have to be postponed; chamber concerts will be performed without interval, twice on the same day. Social distancing, even with two performances, will reduce ticket income to well below financially sustainable levels, so a view will have to be taken on which concerts can go ahead. If Covid becomes impossibly restricting we will revert to a reduced ‘virtual’ festival as last year. Full refunds will be made for any tickets purchased in advance.
Due to uncertainty at the time of going to press regarding any restrictions which may be in place during the Festival, we kindly ask you to keep an eye on our website for any venue or programme changes.
