A WARM WELCOME TO WIMF 2022 Anthony Wilkinson Festival Director It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to our 14th year with a programme that I hope you will find matches your ambitions to bring world-class musicians to your doorstep, and spread the joy of live music making in the company of festival friends. We open in style with one of the most exciting of choral works, Berlioz’s dramatic ‘L’Enfance du Christ’ with the Academy Choir, London Mozart Players and a great line up of soloists. The Brodsky Quartet are looking forward to celebrating their astonishing 50 years together with us. The Amatis Piano Trio are returning now as a successfully established international ensemble. Our Tertis Viola event features the Four Zemtsovs, the extremely talented family from Amsterdam. Chineke! are proving to be international stars and showing the strength of diversity in music. Canadian duo Louis Lortie and Hélène Mercier return with a programme of early 20th century masterpieces, Lortie stays on for an evening of Chopin, and there’s a magical bag of other exciting events: Regents Opera with ‘Carmen’; Tenebrae with Victoria’s Requiem Mass; and Jazz with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra. Last, but not least, and supported by the Arts Council, is a revival of the WIMF danced production of Stravinsky’s ‘The Soldier’s Tale’ in the contemporary setting of a computer game, with the iphone as the font of all wealth and knowledge, described by the critic of the Evening Standard as ”… a theatrical tour de force that deserves to be widely seen.” Despite a late decision to go ahead in what was a Covid-restricted environment, the 2021 festival achieved nearly 90% attendance of a normal year. Hopefully, WIMF 2022 will see such a bounce back that we will break all records of ticket sales and attendance. A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN Andrew Lenon Chairman Anthony Wilkinson has once again succeeded in putting together an outstanding series of concerts with typically imaginative programmes to be performed by musicians of the highest calibre. The concerts include the familiar and well-loved but they also tempt us outside our musical comfort zone with intriguing, less familiar programmes! With the pandemic now receding, the trustees hope that you will indulge yourselves by coming to as many concerts as you can. In this way you will be ensuring the continued success of the festival which depends on ticket sales as its main source of earned income. There is of course nothing artists appreciate more than performing to a full house, so please treat yourself to an extra concert or two and be our best ambassadors by spreading the word far and wide. Bringing the BEST to Wimbledon we need your help Julian Marland Trustee Hello - my name is Julian Marland. I have been helping arts sector charities raise money for nearly 30 years. I recently joined as a Trustee of the Wimbledon International Music Festival to help this amazing festival continue to bring a collection of the world’s finest musicians to your doorsteps every November. Bringing great musicians from around the world requires planning a long time ahead, and the ‘Best’ naturally cost more money, more than our intimate venues in Wimbledon can bring in in ticket sales alone. The generosity of our supporters has helped to bridge this gap. Although we successfully continue to attract Arts Council funding for specific projects, the government’s ‘levelling up’ agenda sees arts funding generally moving out of London, so we cannot expect to rely on support from public sector sources. For this reason, I am asking you to join me in becoming a Benefactor or Friend of the festival. While all the associated costs of putting on the festival increase every year, we have chosen to hold the levels of our Friends and Benefactors’ contributions over the past few years: Benefactors: Gold at £2,000 and above; Silver from £1,000; Bronze from £500 Friends: Gold from £250; Silver from £100; and Friend from £40. THE BRODSKYS CELEBRATE 50 YEARS THREE ASTONISHING STRING QUARTETS Haydn: String Quartet Op. 54/2 Shostakovich: String Quartet No. 8 Schubert: String Quartet in D minor, D.810, ‘Death and the Maiden’ Haydn’s Op. 54 No 2 has been called the ‘most extraordinary string quartet of the 18th century’. Schubert’s ‘Death and the Maiden’ is a wondrous masterpiece, many people’s favourite string quartet of all. Shostakovich’s iconic autobiographical eighth represents his ‘Testament’, using the four-note motif DSCH, Dmitri Shostakovich “The Brodskys showcased every nuance of their extraordinary skills. This splendid young Spanish pianist’s discoveries range from Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre (1665-1729); Marianna Martines (1744-1812) admired by Mozart; to Mana Zucca (1885-1981) via Fanny Mendelssohn, Lili Boulanger to Vitezslava Kapralova, pupil and only muse to Bohuslav Martinů.

The Zemtsov Viola Quartet consists of four members of a remarkable family all playing the viola. They bring an unusual, but ravishing programme specially conceived for four violas. All four quartet members studied with the great viola virtuoso Michael Kugel. Each of them has developed a distinguished international career.

Two of Elgar’s masterpieces bookend this concert of exceptional works full of nostalgia for time and place, for his beloved Malvern. Mahler’s Adagietto is a ravishing love song to his wife Alma. This distinguished choir that has performed frequently at St John’s Smith Square, Cadogan Hall and the Proms, has invited WIMF to host its final concert, featuring one of the most popular of all choral works, the Brahms Requiem, in the 1871 London Version with piano 4-hands. Brahms was just 20 years old when Robert Schumann pronounced: “He has come; a young man over whose cradle Graces and Heroes have stood watch. His name is Johannes Brahms.” 15 years later, with his German Requiem performed in front of an international audience, Schumann’s prophecy finally came true.
