Welcome to Wimbledon BookFest 2019 We hope you enjoy this year’s lineup. We have programmed across a broad range of subjects from politics and the news, to children’s and sport events and we are particularly delighted to welcome both the new Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage, and the new Children’s Laureate, Cressida Cowell, who will both be doing events for schools.

We are always keen to reflect the zeitgeist and 2019 has seen a stepping up of both public and policy interest in the climate.

There’s a sense of urgency. As such, we are partnering with the climate journal, It’s Freezing in LA!, to host a number of events around the environment.

This year has been an exciting year with the addition of a Spring Festival to our activity where we attracted new customers to our wonderful venue settings of King’s College School and Southside House. But it’s also had its sadness. In late 2018 we said goodbye to Tony Kane, founding father of the festival. Tony was a great community man and someone who believed in the value of life-long learning for all, young and old. To honour Tony we will be launching our 2019 Bursary Scheme for film students this Autumn. This will be the start of a number of projects that channel Tony’s spirit in the work we do at BookFest. He remains with us on our journey.

Ahead of the upcoming exhibition ‘Eco-Visionaries’ at the Royal Academy, discover how architecture and design can address environmental disaster and ecological change.

Join Samaneh Moafi of Turner Prize-nominated Forensic Architecture and RA Curator Gonzalo Herrero Delicado, as they discuss how the climate crisis requires a dramatic rethinking of how we design and build. They will discuss how green architecture relates to environmental change and human agency.

Wimbledon BookFest is thrilled to partner with It’s Freezing in LA!, an independent climate change journal, on three events at this year’s festival. This event is curated by Contra and It’s Freezing in LA! as part of their ongoing collaboration exploring intersections between conflict and the environment.

Craftfulness Workshop

Mend Yourself by Making Things Robert Graves Gallery | 1.15-2.15pm | £25

Indulge in being creative and carefree as you make new out of old.

Research has shown that the regular practise of a craft activity has a positive impact on our mental health. Join author Rose Davidson for a workshop to still the mind and soothe the soul. Rose will illuminate how craft practice re-introduces balance into our lives and our habits by cultivating creativity, carving space for ourselves, promoting focus, creating a safe space for failure, and ultimately, how to make peace with imperfection.

This will be a mending and darning session using ideas from Japanese boro stitching. Please bring along some items to repair or fabric scraps. All other materials will be provided.

Join us for a fun-filled event which will leave you plenty the wiser as we celebrate the publication of the 600th Very Short Introduction from Oxford University Press.

The Very Short Introductions are a fabulous way to discover a new subject: high-level but digestible overviews written by experts in their field. The audience will be split into small groups who will move around the Gallery, enjoying ten minutes with each author for a snappy introduction to their topic, plus time for questions. When the bell rings, you must move on! It’s speed dating – for ideas.

Saturday 5 October Lily Bailey

OCD and a Girl Lost in Thought Robert Graves Gallery | 5.15-6.15pm | £7.50

Candid and blackly humorous, Lily Bailey’s true account of her struggle with mental health is compelling.

As a child and teenager, Lily suffered from severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. She kept her illness private, until the widespread misunderstanding of the disorder spurred her on to write her memoir Because We Are Bad. Written to help others deal better with this diagnosis, Lily has since found a path to managing her obsessions and compulsions while making impressive inroads as a journalist, model and writer.

Education Programme Wimbledon BookFest is not-for-profit and runs a range of educational activity as part of its Word Up! programme for local schools and young people. We also fund tickets and books for children to promote literacy. Over 80 schools take part in our activity each year with an estimated 8,000 children accessing projects.

WIMBLEDON & PUTNEY COMMONS CONSERVATORS The Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators (WPCC) are delighted to welcome the Wimbledon Bookfest once again to Wimbledon Common in 2019 and wish the organisers every success.

Wimbledon and Putney Commons, established by a separate Act of Parliament in 1871, provide 1,140 acres of public open space comprising Wimbledon Common, Putney Heath and Putney Lower Common. Governance is provided by eight Conservators, whose duty it is ‘to preserve, protect and enhance the Commons for the purposes of exercise and recreation’.

In recognition of the passion and commitment within the local community for the Commons, the Conservators are delighted to announce the launch of the ‘Friends of Wimbledon and Putney Commons’.

The official launch event will be held on the evening of Friday 20 September 2019.
