Community Games Event – Cycle Devizes The Green came alive with marquees, entertainers, stalls and cyclists on Saturday 15th June, the start of National Bike Week. The event was opened by Devizes Mayor Pete Smith, ably assisted by our Master of Ceremonies, Tony Sedgwick, Chairman of Devizes Community Area Partnership. The Devizes Town Band launched the day with a rousing fanfare. At noon the Mayor presented the winners of the cycling poetry competition selected from 70 entries with prizes and a signed cycling photo from Sir Chris Hoy! And then the heavens opened.Nonetheless, we had about 40 cyclists of all ages on the rides, 33 of which explored the Town Trail whilst the rest took up the challenge to cycle the Pewsey Vale, despite the weather! Once again we were impressed by the Town's support and grateful to our sponsors, particularly Aster Communities whom we are looking forward to working with, on all sorts of cycling ideas, in the near future. Margaret Nightingale Cycle Devizes Coordinator said "In spite of the weather, the volunteers and cyclists were cheerful and enthusiastic. Yet again, the event proved that there are plenty of adults and children in Devizes who can and do enjoy cycling - let's keep that growing" Kate Freeman of DCAP Transport Group and co-founder said "All the cycling activities energised us. I don't think it's my fevered imagination but cycling around Devizes seems to be more visible these days. This promising start needs to be supported with better sign posting to quiet routes, cycle parking and a really cycle friendly surface along the towpath" Ride Leaders Sought - Working with other groups Cycle Devizes is leading a programme of rides that we hope will produce confident cyclists. We have already attracted many experienced cyclists and hope that some of them will support us and become Ride Leaders - could this be you? Please contact us if interested. There are bike shop vouchers for the first 2 to sign up! 20 mph for Residential Areas - A simple way to encourage people to leave their cars at home and to cycle from time to time?Cyclists have told us that it's not much fun cycling in speeding traffic and that they would feel safer with a 20 mph speed limit where they live. A new 20's Plenty group is in development - more news to follow. Tax Free Cycle Purchase Scheme Did you know that you can save up to 42% on the cost of a brand new bike and equipment? Devizes companies are signing up to the scheme run by both our local bike shops: Bikes n' Boards and Roses Bikes. More information here: www.bike2workscheme.co.uk
