Welcome to the 9th edition of Coaching News. The next few months here at WASP will be very exciting. National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGB’s) are set to start their new Whole Sports Plans as of 1st April and we will also see a new set of Coaching Objectives for the county set by Sport England. At the end of January I attended the National Coaching Conference in Birmingham lead by Sport England & SCUK. I have noted the key coaching achievements and progress from 2008-2012 taken from the conference and would like to share these with you: 

Since 2008 there has been a more focused strategic body for coaching

NGB’s have been embracing the importance of workforce planning for coaches

Every year around 60,000 coaches undertake NGB coach education qualifications

Coaches are playing a key role in supporting talent

A more focused and joint effort in recruiting, developing and retaining coaches has been achieved

The CSSN was created and has made an IMPACT! What do we know about coaches? There are 900,000 coaches in England 76% are volunteer coaches 21% of coaches are part time & 3% of coaches are full time 70% of coaches are male 77% of coaches work with young people 27% of coaches work with 17-21 years 21% of coaches work with adults aged 22+ The largest amount of coaching takes place in sports clubs 75% of coaches coach in Football, Rugby, Cricket, Swimming, Gymnastics & Badminton

Its great to hear that Sport England recognise the hard work that you as coaches do and this has made an Impact, so please keep up the good work! As always if you have any stories or good practice you would like to share with us please do let me know. Dominique Oughton Senior Sports Consultant

Key Coaching Objectives for 2013-2017 Sport England will continue to invest money into coaching (totalling around £9million) Showing impact is key Increasing participation is still the main focus Adopt a more intelligence led approach Develop talent outcomes Coaching as a means to an end – not an end in itself Increase participation Develop talented athletes

We now have over 1000 coaches registered on RightCoach!

Since the last edition of Coaching News was published, we have been hard at work continuing to produce RightCoach ID cards in line with the Minimum Standards for Deployment (MSD) listed below;

      

18+ years of age UKCC/NGB Level 2 qualified Enhanced CRB Certificate First Aid Certificate Safeguarding & Child Protection Certificate Insurance Certificate Multi-Skills/FUNdamentals Certificate

The ID cards have been introduced for independent coaches who are being paid to deliver within schools, to ensure that school sports coaching is consistent and of a high standard. Schools across Wiltshire and Swindon are supporting the MSD and the ID card, and will receive updated lists of coaches who meet the standards on a monthly basis. If you are not on the list, schools are unlikely to use your services, and if you are working in schools you will be expected to present your ID card upon arrival of every session.

At the moment, 75 coaches meet all of the MSD. Are you one of those?

If not, you are able to meet the MSD requirements by attending courses from our Coach Education programme, details of the courses for 2013 can be found on pages 9 and 10.

Wiltshire Sports Club Roadshow- 8th November 2012 WASP and Wiltshire Council jointly delivered our first Club Roadshow on 8th November held at St John’s School, Marlborough. The aim of the evening was to provide high quality sports development support and advice to local sports clubs in an engaging and informative environment. Guest speakers for the evening included Sport England, KKP, Sport England Club Leaders and Wiltshire Charities Information Bureau. Local officers from Wiltshire Council and WASP were also on hand to discuss specific club issues and project ideas. The evening was a great success with over 40 participants attending to take part in the various workshops. Due to the success of the evening and the positive feedback received WASP & Wiltshire Council have organised to deliver another 3 Roadshows across the county for 2013. Please see page 5 for more information. In conjunction with the Roadshows WASP & Wiltshire Council have also produced an E-Newsletter to provide Clubs with the latest information, ideas, projects and advice on a bi-monthly basis. To ensure you receive this E-Newsletter please email Dominique@wiltssport.org

Wiltshire and Swindon Clubs benefit from Lottery Awards 22 Sports Clubs in the County benefited from £580000 investment from a range of Sport England funding programmes last year. The funds were primarily used to improve club facilities or purchase new equipment and benefited 10 different Sports. Cricket clubs received the largest investment with 6 clubs receiving £107000 that funded improvements to changing rooms, cricket squares and equipment. Football clubs received £103000 to support pitch extensions, floodlights and equipment. Other clubs receiving awards included Bowls, Croquet, Diving, Rugby, Gymnastics and Angling. There are a number of different funding schemes that clubs can apply to details of which can be found at www.sportengland.org or from Wiltshire and Swindon Sport 01380 725111. Clubs can apply for up to £10000 from the small grants scheme and typically this can be used to support projects that promote participation in your club. Swindon Gymnastics club received funding to support a coach education programme, Liden Angling Club received funding to support work they were doing with the local scouts group and Calne Diving Club received funds to purchase new equipment. Larger projects can be supported through the Inspired Facilities funds where up to £50000 can be applied for. These awards are targeted at improvements or extensions to sports facilities. Any clubs looking to apply for funds can get advice and information from WASP, their Sport’s Governing Body or the Swindon Sports Forum. WASP’s Coach Development Event 26th & 27th October 2012 On 26th & 27th October after many months of planning and organisation, WASP held its 3rd Coach Development Event at St John’s School, Marlborough. The 2 days were really well attended, and attracted over 100 coaches from a large variety of sporting levels and backgrounds, including Martial Arts, Ice Skating, Bowls, Dance and Wheelchair Basketball. 14 workshops were on offer to suit a wide audience including students, teachers, volunteers and coaches at all levels. Workshops included First Aid, How to deliver Engaging Sessions, LTA Mini Tennis, An Introduction to the FUNdamentals of Movement, Developing Talent, Safeguarding & Protecting Children, Talking Sport, Challenging Behaviour in PE & Sport and Funding Opportunities.

We were really fortunate to have Dan Hunt, Race Coach with Sky Pro-Cycling Team & GB Senior National Endurance Coach for the Track, as our guest speaker for the day. Dan gave a truly inspirational presentation on his journey as a coach and shared his experiences in working with elite cyclists at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The feedback we received from the 2 day event has been excellent, with comments including;  “Loved the day, my Dodgeball Level 2 workshop was fun and informative!”  “The whole day was great, workshops were good, and lunch was lovely too”  “Coming to the Coach Development Day has given me new confidence in my abilities, especially in First Aid, thank you”  “I’m looking forward to putting some of my new knowledge into practice.”

Wiltshire and Swindon Sport Equality Policy As part of the requirement placed on County Sports Partnerships and National Governing Bodies by Sport England, all organisations must be able to demonstrate their pro-active approach to addressing inequalities. As part of our work we have introduced revisions to the Wiltshire and Swindon Sport Equality Policy and procedures. We have done work this with Equal Chances Better lives – Equalities Wiltshire and used the information produced by both Wiltshire and Swindon Borough Councils on the profile of their populations and included in the annual Joint Strategic Needs Assessment. This information tells us;  The female / male proportion in Wiltshire population is similar to the South West (both 49% male and 51 female). The national average is slightly higher for the female population (at 52%).

At 3.2% of the population, Wiltshire has a lower proportion of ethnic minorities than the South West region as a whole (4.3%) and considerably less than the national share (England: 11.3%). However, the proportionate change in the ethnic minorities’ population in Wiltshire between 2001 and 2007 has been much larger than for the South West region and England average. In 2009 a total of 14.3% of Swindon’s resident population belonged to black and ethnic minority (BME) community.

As the county is a largely white and rural area, people in minority groups are often not present in sufficient numbers to convene in coherent groups. The number of people who have come to Wiltshire as economic migrants since 2001 is unknown, although as in other parts of the country, there has been a growth in people living in Wiltshire from Eastern Europe. Language barriers often make it difficult for these groups to access services. Latest figures show that the number of overseas nationals coming to Swindon to work is steadily increasing, at a faster rate (in proportion to total population size) than that for the South West and England as a whole.

The 2010 Swindon schools survey found that the proportion of primary school pupils from BME groups had increased from 14% in 2007 to 17% in 2010, with the corresponding figure for secondary schools increasing from 11% to 15%. The same survey found that 11% of Swindon school pupils have English as a second language (up from 7% in 2010), with a total of 104 languages being spoken.

Projected rates demonstrate that at present Swindon is estimated to have statistically significantly fewer individuals with moderate to severe physical disabilities than England as a whole (p< .05). However, it is projected that this number will grow at a faster rate than for England as a whole; and by 2025 Swindon will have a similar rate of persons with physical disabilities to the national average. In Wiltshire there are over 29,000 people aged 18-64 and almost 38,000 older people aged 65 and over who have a moderate or serious physical disability (a total of almost 67,000 for the county)

Participation The Sport England Active People 6 survey provides information about the rates of participation in Wiltshire and Swindon. Males are more active than females in both Wiltshire (m 24.5% f 19.2%) and Swindon (m 28.4% f 20.2%). Participation rates fall across the 3 key age groups (16-34, 35-54, 55) in both areas but the rates more significantly in Wiltshire. Wiltshire rates decrease from 29.8% / 26.4% / 12.4% with Swindon falling less dramatically from 32.3% / 24.8% / 15.5%. Participation rates amongst those with a limiting illness or disability are significantly lower in Wiltshire than Swindon. (Wiltshire 5.2%, Swindon 13.3%). In relation to participation rates amongst ethnic groups Swindon has a higher level of participation than Wiltshire (Wiltshire 15.8% Swindon 20.6%).

A full copy of our Equalities Policy is available from the www.wiltssport.org under the Resources section.

SWINDON LIGHTNING CHEER FOR WASP FUNDING! At the start of this year, WASP were able to provide funding of £288 to Swindon Lightning Cheerleading Club. The founder of the Club and Head Coach, Millie Pall, tells us her plans for 2013 and the funding they received. Millie told us, “We will mainly use the money to help promote the team and let people know we exist so that they can come along and try it out, as well as to train new coaches in order to provide more opportunities. We currently have 3 qualified coaches working with the squad, and our plan is for the coaches not only to work within the club, but to spread Cheer in the community, by providing afterschool clubs and hosting an interschool competition eventually too! A really important goal for us this year is to develop our experience and qualifications, and support opportunities for a disability squad, this is something really close to all of our hearts, and we want to promote that Cheer is for everyone!” Swindon Lightning currently train Seniors on Tuesdays 7-9pm at Next Generation, and Sundays 6-8pm at the Oasis, and Juniors on Thursday 6-8pm at Next Generation and Sundays 6-8pm at the Oasis. For more information, contact Millie Pall on swindonlightning@hotmail.co.uk
