Welcome to the 10th edition of Coaching News. School Sport & Coaches - Additional Funding for Primary Schools. The announcement of additional funding for primary school sport from September 2013 has focused the attention of schools and coaches on the delivery of sport in schools. Over the last 3 years within Wiltshire and Swindon, to help and support schools the local Coaching Network has worked with the Local Authority Education bodies to establish a clear and simple message to schools: “we recommend that schools only employ those coaches who meet minimum standards for deployment and are registered with RightCoach” The Association for Physical Education (afPE) is a representative voice for many working in delivering physical education in schools and their advice to schools is: Stop, Look, Listen and audit. Sue Wilkinson states… 'We want to see good coaches going into schools, with the support of governing bodies of sport, and working with teachers to upskill them, and building those relationships to get confident and competent teachers and coaches – it's the best of both worlds for all. 'Coaches will learn from the pedagogy of teachers and improve their skills through such links, while teachers will learn technical skills from coaches and be able to apply them in the longer term. If coaches are used for after-school clubs, it helps forge links with the wider community, and also helps build club membership for the future for those who want to develop their sport.' If you are a school and wish to find out more information on the Minimum Standards for Deployment and which coaches meet these, please contact Dominique Oughton Dominique@wiltssport.org for access to the counties Accredited Coach List. If you are a coach and needing to register on RightCoach please visit www.rightcoach.org.uk and then arrange an informal meeting with Dominique@wiltssport.org As always if you have any stories or good practice you would like to share with us please do let me know. We now have over 1050 coaches registered on RightCoach!

Since the last edition of Coaching News was published, we have been hard at work continuing to produce RightCoach ID cards in line with the Minimum Standards for Deployment (MSD) listed below;

      

18+ years of age UKCC/NGB Level 2 qualified Enhanced CRB Certificate First Aid Certificate Safeguarding & Child Protection Certificate Insurance Certificate Multi-Skills/FUNdamentals Certificate

The ID cards have been introduced for independent coaches who are being paid to deliver within schools, to ensure that school sports coaching is consistent and of a high standard. Schools across Wiltshire and Swindon are supporting the MSD and the ID card, and will receive updated lists of coaches who meet the standards on a monthly basis. If you are not on the list, schools are unlikely to use your services, and if you are working in schools you will be expected to present your ID card upon arrival of every session.

At the moment, 68 coaches meet all of the MSD. Are you one of those?

If not, you are able to meet the MSD requirements by attending courses from our Coach Education Programme, details of the courses for 2013/2014 can be found on the next page….

Wiltshire & Swindon Clubmark Report 2012 Clubmark was originally created in 2002 and is Sport England’s kite mark of quality accreditation for sports clubs to ensure that all clubs are working towards being Safe, Effective and Child Friendly. Clubmark provides you with the tools and resources you need to ensure your place to play is delivering a development programme and operating in line with best practice. Benefits of this include ongoing programme development, increased membership, increased participation, improve the quality of coaches, raised profile and access to more funding opportunities. What this means to you as a Coach: Coaching staff have a key role in establishing an appropriate coaching environment and creating a successful playing programme within Clubmark. All sports have to demonstrate that coaches are trained to appropriate levels and that the activity undertaken in the club reflects best practice in the development of young people. For example coaches are required to ensure that young people do not train excessively or in conditions that may cause injury or discomfort. The emphasis within Clubmark is that coaches are supported in their professional development, so when new ideas or updates (e.g., LTAD) become available the NGB supports its coaches to understand and implement them. To achieve Clubmark, clubs must have coaches that are suitably qualified (Level 2) and trained within Safeguarding & ProtectingmChildren. The exact qualifications will depend on the individual sport and can be found through your NGB. The Wiltshire & Swindon Coaching Network (part of the England Coaching Network) highly recommend that club coaches also hold 1st Aid, appropriate Insurance, and an enhanced CRB certificate. It is estimated that there are 150,000 clubs helping to deliver community sport in the UK. The number of these that are Clubmark accredited clubs continues to rise. Nationally the average number of clubs that accredit per month stands at 51, with a total increase of 656 year on year.

Clubmark continues to go from strength to strength. This demand has underpinned the development of the new “adult only” version that we have piloted in Swindon with one of the Bowls clubs. The number of clubs achieving Clubmark within the WASP area has grown during 2011/12 and we now have 183 Clubs holding the award from 23 sports. Football, Cricket, Tennis and Swimming have the largest number of accredited clubs. The Wiltshire Council area had the highest percentage increase in the number of accredited clubs (7.32%). Swindon Borough Council area has remained static. The overall number of accredited clubs in Wiltshire is the third in the South West region whilst the percentage increase in the number of accredited clubs ranks fifth in the 2012 period. Changes to CRB Disclosure and Barring Service Many coaches will be aware of the changes that have been introduced to the process by which an employer can ensure an individual is suitable to work with children, young people or vulnerable adults. The new service, the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) replaces the Criminal Records Bureau and the Independent Safeguarding Authority and will now be responsible for issuing the New Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) disclosure. The new service has been phased in over the last few months and a number of key changes have been introduced during June that will affect the process for obtaining the new DBS disclosures. In future the Registered Body will no longer receive a copy of the information provided by the DBS, only the applicant will receive the disclosure. We can expect to see sports organisations introducing arrangements to ensure that they see an applicant’s copy of the DBS disclosure where currently this would be automatically sent to them. The DBS online Update Service will go live and will reintroduce the portability of the checks to employers and individuals applying for a DBS disclosure will be able to subscribe to this service. This will mean that with the individual’s consent, multiple employers (assuming that the roles are of the same type and level) will be able to undertake a free online check to establish whether the status of the DBS disclosure provided by the applicant has changed. Subscription needs to be undertaken within 2 weeks of the DBS disclosure’s date of issue and updated annually. For volunteers there will be no cost. For paid roles a charge of £13 per annum will be made to the applicant. The Position Applied For field (x61) on the application form will need to be completed differently, and you should start to do this right now. Failure to complete the field correctly may delay the application as DBS will need to contact you for further information; it may also prevent the applicant from using their DBS Certificate for future employment or volunteering purposes. You should now include one of the following phrases in x61 line 1 ‘Child Workforce’. Use this for any position that involves working/volunteering with children. ‘Adult Workforce’. Use this for any position that involves working/volunteering with adults. ‘Child and Adult Workforce’. Use this for any position that involves working/volunteering with children and adults. For further information on the changes please visit https://www.gov.uk/government/ organisations/disclosure-and-barring-service or contact your NGB.
