Twenty-one Wilmslow High School students enjoyed another hugely successful day at the National Schools’ Trampolining Finals in Gateshead on Saturday. Having negotiated their way through the North West and North rounds of the competition, the school had high hopes for a strong showing in the finals.

In the U14 boys’ novice team category, Wilmslow finished in 5th position, while the U19 boys’ intermediate team were placed 3rd. In the U19 boys’ novice, the U19 girls’ intermediate and the U19 boys’ elite category, Wilmslow’s teams finished in first position and were crowned national schools champions.

In the individual competitions, 6 students recorded top 10 finishes, with Conor Smith, Alfie Kenworthy and Mollie Bennett 8th in their categories, Dominic Rowe 6th, Ben Fazelynia 3rd and Tenniel Cowen 2nd.

Coach Hilary Pemberton was once again delighted with the teams’ performances, remarking on the hard work and dedication the students have shown in training throughout the year.

ICEAW Base Six of our Business and Economics students travelled over to Chester on 15th March to take part in the Institute of Chartered Accountants’ BASE national Business and Accounting competition 2017. The aim of the competition is to give sixth form students an insight into the working life of a chartered accountant.

It is certainly not just a world of numbers and tricky calculations but much more an exciting environment of team work, analysis, problem solving and communication – numbers hardly came into it! Guided by mentors from the ICEAW, fifteen teams from schools across Cheshire pulled apart a business case study (similar to those used for the Institute’s final exams apparently) in order to identify the problems, form a strategy and then advise

After presenting their findings to the judges the teams faced some challenging questions.

Inexperience or age did not let anyone off the hook! Our Wilmslow High team, made up of Jacob Brennan, Adam Leigh, Frankie Halliday, Andrew Moakes, Beth Foggerty and Emily Hughes gave a professional presentation and were unphased by the questions. They successfully made it through to the final four, but were pipped to a place in the National Final by Kings Chester.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the day – “I would do it again” said Beth Fogarty (who luckily wants to pursue a career as a Chartered Accountant!) Their mentor commented on the excellent team work, organisation skills and timekeeping, their obvious strengths with analysis and their sound advice - as well as their confidence when presenting.

ICEAW BASE is not only a great opportunity to find out what is involved in accountancy but the competitive nature of the day also demonstrated just what is needed to pursue such a career at the top level.

The Skills Development group held a cake sale to raise money for The Down’s Syndrome Association ahead of Down’s Syndrome Awareness Week!

Medicine and Science from the University of Surrey.

Our next crop of prospective Oxbridge students visited Aintree Racecourse on Monday 20th March to attend the Oxford and Cambridge student conference.

Sixteen Year 12 students joined others from across the North West and were given the opportunity to listen to a range of admissions tutors as they talked about studying their subjects at Oxford or Cambridge. They also heard from current Oxbridge students, who talked about their daily lives including study, support, the colleges and extra-curricular activities.

Wilmslow Students Aim High We are very proud of five of our Year 13 students who have received offers to study highly competitive courses at the most prestigious universities. Four students have been given offers from Oxford or Cambridge: Sophie Kraunsoe (Natural Sciences at Cambridge), Ross Jenkinson (Physics at Oxford), Adam Morris (Mathematics and Computer Science at Oxford) and Ewan Ferguson (History at Cambridge). Student finance advisers were on hand to outline the current system of loans and grants whilst careers experts shared a wealth of exciting employment opportunities for Oxbridge graduates. Inspired by the day, the students came away with a great deal of useful information and a better understanding of what it would mean to study at Oxford or Cambridge.

Walking to beat cancer This March, Mrs Waddell, Mrs Hulme and Mrs Goodwin from the ASC resource are walking 10,000 steps a day throughout the month to help beat cancer sooner.

Cancer survival rates have doubled over the past 40 years. Consistent progress is being made but improvements to technology and ground-breaking work offer new opportunities to find different ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer and improve survival rates even further.

We are hoping to help Cancer Research UK improve results even faster.

Up to March 13th we have collectively completed 511,620 steps and covered 374 Km and are motivated to continue.

NOTES EXAM THURSDAYS Exam Thursdays are an opportunity for students t​ o practise exam papers in exam conditions.

They allow students the opportunity to improve exam technique and timing, and work through exam nerves by getting plenty of practice in before the real thing!

Exam Thursdays will be running every week in the hall after school from Thursday 23rd March until the start of the examination season.

To take part in Exam Thursdays, students need to speak to their subject teachers.

New school uniform and PE kit suppliers Following a tendering process, the school has appointed a new school uniform supplier and PE kit supplier. ‘Express Uniform’ is now the official supplier of Wilmslow High School uniform and ‘Surridge Sport’ is the official supplier for PE kit; we are very much looking forward to working with both companies.

How will the new suppliers advertise and sell their clothing?

Both suppliers will sell items via their websites. The link to the Express Uniform website and the telephone number to call for PE kit enquiries, can be accessed via the ‘uniform’ quick link tab on the front page of the school website .

Does either supplier have a shop where I can purchase items?

No. Both suppliers will run ‘pop-up’ shops in Wilmslow High School and in local primary schools during high demand times (dates will be advertised). At other times, purchases can be made online or over the phone, directly with the suppliers.

How do I purchase replacement school uniform now?

The current Puma branded PE kit is now available at a discounted price from the school PrintWorks shop. To purchase any items of the current PE kit contact a member of the school PrintWorks team to place an order and arrange a collection time: 01625 441 059

Why is the current Puma PE kit being offered at a ‘discounted’ price?

The new PE kit supplier will be selling their own brand Surridge PE kit. These items will be similar in style, colour and quality to the current Puma PE kit but will not be available until later in the Summer Term. During this transition period, parents/carers will have the option of purchasing the discounted Puma kit from school , while stocks last or wait for the new PE kit to become available.

Could I purchase the new Surridge PE kit and also purchase the current discounted Puma PE kit as a spare set?

Yes. Students will be allowed to wear either style of branded kit. The new Surridge PE will be available later in the Summer Term.

Can my son/daughter wear the current Puma PE kit next year?

Both styles of PE kit will be acceptable for lessons and fixtures for at least the next two years, so there is no pressure on parents/ carers to purchase the new Surridge PE kit until they need to. Year 6 students moving into Year 7 will be encouraged to buy the new kit, though they will also have the option of wearing the current PE kit.

Can I still purchase second-hand uniform and PE kit from school?

Yes. The second-hand shop will still be the most cost effective way of purchasing school uniform and PE kit, though their stock is limited to donations. The shop will be open in High Options every Tuesday afternoon between 1.30 - 2.30pm. The number to call to enquire about purchasing or donating uniform is: 07889 924692

Will there be an opportunity to try sample sizes before ordering?

The school PrintWorks shop has sample PE kit stock on site. ‘Express Uniform’ will be operating a ‘pop-up’ shop in school. Dates and times will be advertised.

Limited stock discounted Puma PE kit available from PrintWorks PE kit can be worn in lessons for the next couple of years or until a new kit purchase is required. If your son or daughter takes part in a lot of extracurricular sports activities, the discounted kit may come in very useful for practice sessions or as spare kit for PE lessons. There is limited stock in each size so please email contact Mr Bowden in PrintWorks to make any purchases while stocks last. PrintWorks will be open for PE kit sales during the Easter break.

SPORT Netball Knutsford travelled to Wilmslow last Wednesday for fixtures at U12 A and B and U13. Overall we proved to be too strong, winning with convincing score lines in all three matches, the pick of the bunch being the U12As winning 24-5.

Since then the U14 and U15 and senior girls have played Fallibroome, unfortunately losing all three games in competitive matches.

Well done Josephine!

Josephine Fraser-Thomson, a Year 10 student, has played netball since Year 5/6 at primary school. She developed a passion for it and has since played for Cheshire county and now plays for the North West Regional Performance Academy.

Congratulations Ellie!

The top 16 under 16 players who have received the most points from the 2 national winter competitions are invited to compete in the Nike Grade 1 Competition at the national tennis centre in London .

On Saturday 11th March 2017 she was one of 11 girls selected to represent the North West as a region at the England selection trials and was successful so she is now an England U17 netball athlete.

Well done, we wish you every success in the future.

Ellie only played one national competition as she was away for the other one, though, due to her amazing success in this competition, she automatically qualified with more than enough points.

To be invited was a huge honour as she wasn’t even seeded, and then to come runner up was a massive achievement for Ellie. Well done!

Hockey Last Monday the U12 and U13 girls played friendly matches against Bramhall with the matches finishing 2-2, and 3-3 respectively. Izzy Green and Elle Wood were named as players of the match.

At the weekend it was over to our U16 and U14 girls with the U13s in action again, this time against Dollar Academy from Scotland. Unfortunately, their U16s who had just won the Scottish Nationals were incredibly strong and despite a brave performance our girls lost 4-0. However, our U14s won their game convincingly 5-2 whilst the U13s played their U14b team and drew 0-0.

Football On Saturday the U12 and U13 boys made the short trip to Fallibroome, playing the games on astro-turf as a result of the bad weather. The boys weren’t phased though and came away with 5-0 and 2-1 wins. Special mention to Ethan Adamson in Year 7 who scored 4 goals, drawing comments from a few of the watching crowd.

Last week saw the rest of our teams travelling to Cheadle Hulme to fulfil the fixtures. Some extremely competitive games and high quality football on show again but our lads managed to come out on top. The U14 boys won 4-2 whilst the U13B team mpressive form with a 1-0 win over a previously unbeaten side. Jake Ashley was man of the match. At U16 level, our boys were even more impressive, winning 9-2, Ben Elliott grabbing a hat-trick and Will Leigh Doughty scoring 4.

Rugby The Year 7 boys got their first taste of Rugby 7s action at Wirral grammar this week in horrible conditions. It proved to be a tough day for the boys who started with a win and took a couple of sides close. In the end a strong St Ambrose were too much for our boys, finishing them off in the group stage in wet and windy conditions. It was a good experience for the lads and they will have many more opportunities to come.

FREE CPR AND DEFIBRILLATOR TRAINING SESSION Wilmslow Town Council will be hosting a free CPR and defibrillator training session at 8pm on Wednesday 29th March at Wilmslow Parish Hall on Cliff Road to which all are welcome to attend.

The training session will last around an hour and will be provided by local Community First Responder Mike Pain along with Sara Harris of the North West Ambulance Service and the aim is to provide Wilmslow’s residents with information on CPR and the availability of public access defibrillators in Wilmslow. The session will feature demonstrations on when and how to use CPR and the defibrillators in the hope that residents will feel confident in using them.

There are a number of defibrillators available in Wilmslow and Wilmslow Town Council has itself provided three public access defibrillators in Wilmslow town centre and also two external storage boxes which have made an additional two defibrillators available at all times. Although the defibrillators talk you through how to use them some background training will help residents to feel more confident in using one should the need arise.
