A
lthough I’m pretty sure I saw Valentine’s candy on the shelves before Christmas, I can now officially say, happy month of love! For Wilmington, this is also our only month of actual winter. So although there are very few outdoor events to keep the kids worn out, our Things To Do section is full of indoor activities that will keep the cabin fever under control. In an attempt to think warm thoughts, Wilmington Parent also proudly offers our Summer Camp section this month. We have listings of every type for families to start planning for those sunny, fun-filled, school-free days! We will also host our Annual Summer Camp Fair on February 16 from 10am-3pm at Mayfaire Town Center. This is the only event of its kind in the area, providing families with a unique opportunity to explore multiple summer camp and enrichment options all in one location. Does anyone out there have an adorable pet they would like to share with the world? Or at least share with an audience larger than your Facebook and Instagram friends? Wilmington Parent is always looking for more submissions to include in the monthly Our Pets section. Don’t forget about your fur babies on the day of love! Mark your calendars for The Sour Barn’s Puppy Love Valentines Day Event. The event will be held on Sunday, February 10th from 1pm-5pm at 7211 Market Street. This is a dog friendly Valentines complete with free “doggy bags” filled with goodies, a photo booth for you and your love to make memories that last a lifetime and there will also be a raffle! Tour Historic Thalian Hall
Come experience the history and art that are a huge part of our community and Thalian Hall. Every Monday one-hour guided tours are available from 2-3pm. Volunteers lead the tours, so guided tour offerings can vary. Tours cost $12 for adults; $10 for active/retired military with ID; $6 for ages 6 to 18; and free for Thalian Hall members and kids under 5. Group tour rates are $4-$9. Group tours can be scheduled in advance for any day and time of the week by calling (910) 632-2282.
Call for Art Submissions There are two upcoming opportunities for local artists to submit their work for show and sale. The first one, Wilmington Art Association (WAA) invites artists to submit work for its 37th Annual Juried Spring Show and Sale, scheduled for March 30 to April 7, during the annual North Carolina Azalea Festival. Entries are open through Feb. 10 at 5pm. The show is open to all art- ists 18 years of age and older and will include original works in painting, pastel, drawing, printmaking, photography, digital imaging, fiber art, mixed media and three-dimensional work. Monetary and merchandise awards will be in excess of $4,000. Interested artists are encouraged to visit www.wilmingtonart.org if you have questions. The second one, Thalian Association Community Theatre is seeking artists for the 24th Orange Street ArtsFest, Memorial Day weekend, Saturday May 25th from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and Sunday May 26th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The celebrated street fair will return to Orange Street next to the Hannah Block Historic USO/Community Arts Center, with some artists inside the building and on 2nd Street. The popular juried festival is the largest springtime arts festival in downtown Wilmington and will feature over 80 artists from North Carolina and surrounding states, with local entertainment and refreshments. Applicants must submit a color photo of original work in acrylic, oils, watercolor, sculpture, drawing, graphics, wearable arts, leather jewelry, clay, glass, fiber, metal work or mixed media. Photographically or commercially reproduced work is also acceptable in limited editions, signed and numbered by the artist. An early bird entry fee of $135 will be offered until March 1, 2019 and artists will be eligible for awards and $550 in prize money. Navy Week Coming soon to Wilmington! We have been selected as a site city for Navy Week, which focuses on a variety of outreach programs for a week-long series of engagements. Scheduled for April 1-7, the spectacle features more than 75 outreach events coordinated with corporate, civic, government, education, media, veterans, community service and diversity organizations in the city. The Blue Angels, the Navy Parachute Team, Navy bands, Navy divers, ship and submarine crews, hometown Sailors, medical personnel, environmental displays, USS Constitution Sailors and equipment, and Navy recruiting properties all participate in the program. Don’t know where to turn?
Let Go: Letting go of what, where, or who you think you need to be automatically opens up the potential sources of luck in your life. Fear is the biggest block on luck. When you let go, and choose to humble yourself, you then are set up for success. Keep in mind that social media only shows the end of the road of success, the gap and hard work that it takes to reach the top is never in the spotlight. No one posts their 800 rejections, just the one lucky deal.
Show Up: Choose to say “yes” more. Studies have shown that those who show up, and are present, receive more lucky opportunities than those who choose to stay home or avoid the social gathering/networking event. Email and online interactions are no match for the trust, familiarity, and chances created by face-to-face interactions. Be Engaged: The key to staying motivated is good intentions. Be present, and acknowledge all opportunities, big or small. When you are fully engaged by taking an active approach to life, you’re able to identify a lucky moment that you can instantly capitalize on. You never know what the little things will lead to, or who will see them.
Kindness: People naturally put up walls to protect themselves, especially from those they don’t know. The quickest way to gain trust, is to be kind, and listen. Trust that you are enough in any room or any conversation. Don’t be quick to judge: you never know who the person you’re sitting next to might turn out to be. Easter Seals UCP Empower Summer Camp Trillium Health Resources has partnered with Easterseals UCP to address long-standing gaps in social and recreational programming for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in 4 locations. This initiative will support children (and their siblings) and adults (ages 5 to 22) with intellectual and developmental disabilities through social and recreational programming in underserved areas of the state. Summer programs for children and their siblings (as space allows) are scheduled from mid-June through mid-August and are located at 4827 Randall Parkway Wilmington, NC 28403. The programs work on teaching the individual how to safely use household tools to one day live independently with confidence. Since most of the participants are nearing driving age, they go over driving basics and safety awareness using a golf cart. Another important topic that is covered is self care and hygiene. Ocean Cure Camp
The 133-acre camp near Pittsboro is the nation’s largest and oldest camp for people with autism, serving thousands of people each year. Camp Royall provides typical camp activities, in a structured environment to meet the needs of individuals with autism. Some activities include: swimming, arts and crafts, hiking, hayrides, and boating. After spending time at Camp Royall, individuals show increases in confidence, independence, and a willingness to try new things. Programs also provide needed respite for families and peace of mind that their loved one is in a safe and loving environment. Campers receive close supervision from highly trained staff; counselor-to-camper ratio is 1:1 or 1:2, depending on the campers’ level of need. During the summer, Camp Royall offers residential and day camp. Camp Royall’s state-of-theart cabins allow for traditional bunks, as well as private rooms for campers who need them. All cabins are air-conditioned and contain full baths and a washer and dryer. Camp Shriver Camp Shriver is a FREE, one-week, Special Olympics day camp program that gives athletes the opportunity to experience the joy of summer camp. Activities will include: basketball, swimming, yoga, arts & crafts, bingo and other games! It is the goal that Camp Shriver will create memories and opportunities to enhance the lives of Special Olympics Athletes. Camp In Real Life (IRL) Camp In Real Life has been created to help integrate life skills with an engaging and interactive camp experience. The primary focus for this

Ocean Cure began working with small groups of individuals with varying disabilities testing adaptive beach wheelchairs and surf boards. They found that there was a need for continued beach accessibility for those with mobility impairments but also an environment where people can build a healthy habit. Ocean Cure, believes very strongly in using the healing properties of the ocean for not only physical disabilities, but also emotional trauma and mental impairments. Each of their camps begin with a welcoming environment for the participants as they adapt the beach for their needs. For some participants, the camps can simply serve as a day the beach is 100% accessible for them. For those ready to hit the water, they provide adaptive surfboards and assistance in and out of the water. The experience is not only for those riding on the board, but for families, and volunteers. Each and every camp is filled with smiles and (good)tears on the beach from a loved one, or an onlooker walking along Carolina Beach. For Ella, we felt that science, technology, engineering, and math are shaping the future of our world, so STEM labs was the place for us. What is a lasting memory you experienced at this camp? Noah said his favorite was the Harry Potter themed camp. He made an awesome booklet with information about chemical elements and other fun science facts. Ella enjoyed learning how to make my own video game on the computer and then getting to play it! What activity does he look forward to every day? Noah loves drawing, especially magical creatures and characters from his favorite books or movies. Ella was excited to learn new science/technologies to share with her friends! We learn a lot through play. What is some advice for first time camper parents? The STEM Lab staff is exceptionally qualified, knowledgeable and caring. or many kids, organized sports aren’t much fun anymore.
Overbearing parents, over-the-top coaches and overzealous competition are frequent images associated with youth-athletic leagues today. Though playing ball often used to embody the enjoyment of being a kid, the experience for many youngsters is too serious and stressful – and ultimately not worth it. One study revealed 70 percent of U.S. children drop out of organized sports by age 13, with pressure and burnout among the main reasons cited. “The politics, as well as the over-emphasis adults put on kids to see a college scholarship as the ultimate goal, is ruining a kid’s ability to get the most out of sports,” says Maya Castro, author of The Bubble: Everything I Learned as a Target of the Political, and Often Corrupt, World of Youth Sports.This over-emphasis has created an environment amongst the parents and coaches that is similar to a mafia. We badly need changes in this toxic, political and corrupt environment. And it must start with the parents. Castro, who says her own experience as a young soccer player was tainted by misguided and misbehaving adults, offers ideas on how adults can improve the youth-sports culture:

a teaching tool for life. The learning aspect of the game needs to be the focal point of youth sports. Sports should be an extension of family values and behaviors. Good parents and coaches tie in the ups and downs of competition with the challenges in navigating adult life.
Model positive behaviors. Part of the negative image of youth sports is related to parents yelling at coaches, referees, opponents, or even their own kids. There are enough critics in the stands hurling profanities and insults during a game. Parents should set the right example for their kid – and for adults who obviously haven’t grown up. Enjoy the moment. Too many parents and their young athletes are fretting the future. “Too often it’s all about winning and getting the scholarship,” Castro says, “but my parents told me there was a time when kids actually enjoyed playing for the sake of playing, and parents won just by getting to watch them play. We need to get back to that. Without it, memories are wasted.” Be encouraging. “Celebrate the effort, not just the result,” Castro says. This goes for youth coaches as well as parents. When kids do some good things, don’t let the mistakes cloud your post-game comments. Be honest in discussing room for improvement, but not at the expense of making them feel like they have to play perfect to get praise. Make education first. Many observers of youth sports say parents have lost perspective by thinking their kid is on the fast track to a scholarship or a pro career. Statistics show few advance that far. In the meantime, kids are exhausted from travel leagues and tournaments, and the way their future through sports is emphasized, education becomes a distant second. Whether a kid decides to keep playing sports or to walk away, he or she should be able to do so without deep regret in having wasted their time. The 5K race utilizes the Loop, N Channel & Coral Drive. The 10K heads east on Salisbury St. to the most eastern Pelican Dr. cross-over, where athletes run west on Pelican Dr toward the drawbridge. The 10K route then continues underneath the drawbridge, meandering through business and residential areas to Causeway Dr, and then east onto Waynick Blvd. Runners will then travel south on Waynick Blvd. until they reach the halfway turn around, and reverse the route back to the park while enjoying the beautiful waterway views along the way. Mindful Kids Join in on this monthly event on February 11, March 18, April 22, and May 20 4-5pm at Porters Neck Yoga Co-op. It is a fun program for kids and families to learn tools for mindful awareness, meditation, gratitude, and peaceful presence. FIT4MOM Monthly Fitness Assessment How is that fitness resolution you made in January going so far? Every month at Hugh MacRae Park, FIT4MOM offers a standardized way to measure your progress! At Fitness Assessment Day, find your starting point and set goals for success. Fitness assessments will be offered on the first Sunday of each month from 1-2pm. They do a variety of timed exercises as well as body measurements. Then they coach you through setting S.M.A.R.T. goals and set up the best plan for you to find success, however, YOU define that. Winter-Wise Weather Tips for Pets Manage outdoor activities. The safest, most comfortable place for your pets is where you are. When temperatures dip below freezing or during severe weather, it’s imperative you keep pets indoors with you and make trips outside shorter. Offer a warm place for your pet to rest inside. A pet bed works perfectly, just make sure it stays clean and dry. Don’t cut your dog’s fur in the wintertime. Your pet’s winter coat is a natural barrier from the harsh, cold elements. Consider a canine coat. Dogs with lots of fur probably don’t need an extra layer to go on walks in the winter. But smaller dogs and those with shorter coats may be more comfortable in a dog sweater or jacket. Check for frostbite. After bathroom breaks and walks, check your pet’s ears, paws and tail for any sign of frostbite or ice and snow build up in the paw pads. Wipe down after walks. Keep a dry, clean towel handy to wipe down your pet’s legs, belly and paws after each outdoor excursion. Ice-melt chemicals can irritate their skin and cause serious illness if ingested. Be careful with chemicals. Antifreeze smells and tastes sweet to pets, but it’s toxic to them. Quickly clean up any spills, and consider using a brand made from non-toxic propylene glycol instead. Keep your pet hydrated. Ensure your pet has plenty of fresh, clean water to drink. Winter air is dry! Don’t leave your pet in a cold car. It’s just as dangerous to leave a pet in a cold car during winter months as it is to leave them in a hot car in the summertime. Pet of the Month Nessie and Marghie The Golden family adopted Nessie from Rosey’s Rescues at PetSmart on May 20, 2017. She’s a boxer mix and super sweet baby! Students across the district explored the theme “Heroes Around Me” in their chosen artistic medium such as: dance, film, literature, music, photography, and visual arts. NHCS Students May Apply for Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM) Students who want to accelerate their coursework to achieve their academic goals may apply for Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM). The CDM process allows students to earn credit in a particular course by demonstrating proficiency in the subject without completing the classroom instruction. All North Carolina students in grades 9-12 are eligible to apply for Credit by Demonstrated Mastery in the available courses. Credit by Demonstrated Mastery is a two-phase process: Phase I: Establishes that a student has a strong foundational knowledge of a subject area, assessed through an End of Course test or exam. The student must achieve a Level 5 on the EOC/state assessment or 90% correct on the local exam, then the student may move on to Phase II. Phase II: Establishes that a student can demonstrate and apply mastery knowledge of the course content. A student must provide an assigned artifact assessed by a school review team in order achieve credit for the course. Characteristics of a Successful Online Learner For New Hanover County students, online learning is an option. North Carolina Virtual Public Schools (NCVPS) offers high school courses, blended courses, and some middle school electives. Virtual courses can be a valuable opportunity, but is it right for your student? Here are some critical characteristics of a successful online student: Self-motivated Students can direct their own learning environment and methods to fulfill course requirements and achieve individual academic success. Good online students can develop techniques to stay involved and interested in their online course. Independent Learner The online environment enables students to learn at their own pace, relieving the stress of feeling rushed or pressured and providing enjoyment in the learning process. Online courses are not an easy way out, though. You will have the same amount of work as you do in a traditional course, but you have the option to log in and work 24/7. Good Time Manager Students must be able to organize and plan their own best “time to learn.” There is no one best time for everyone, but the key to learning is to make the time to learn. Effective Communicator Students must use electronic e-mail and discussion forums to communicate with their peers as well as the instructors. The ability to write clearly to communicate ideas and assignments is essential. Personal Commitment Because there are no bells that begin and end classes, students must have a strong desire to learn and achieve knowledge and skills via online courses. Making a commitment to learn in this manner is a very personal decision and requires a strong commitment to perform in order to achieve academic success. Technologically Prepared A successful online learner knows how to open, create and/or save a document; use various technology tools (e.g., dictionary, thesaurus, grammar checker, calculator); and identify various file formats (e.g., doc, xls, pdf, jpg).
