HAVE YOU HEARD….? Earth Day is on April 22nd, and Wilmington plans to celebrate with their annual Earth Day Festival on the 21st at Hugh MacRae Park from noon to 6pm. This is a perfect opportunity to meet with local activists and organizations and sign your family up to volunteer in the community. There will also be a Kid’s EcoZone with tons of activities!

If you have been to Wrightsville Beach lately, you have probably seen some ugly rust colored pipes that you have to climb over to get to the water. These pipes are working hard to bring new sand to the beach just in time for summer. If you get really close to the pipes, and listen, they sound like those old rainsticks, with water, sand and shells tumbling along inside. Thankfully, they should disappear this month, and leave behind a drastically larger beach area!

Spring and, of course, the Azalea Festival are here! Are your little tots ready to attend the garden parties like little ladies and gentlemen? Cape Fear Cotillion has an upcoming program called Azalea Bitty Belles & Beaus that teaches manners and etiquette, a Bitty Belle/Beau Tea Party, and a Bitty Garden Party. To find out more about what Cotillion has to offer your little ones, visit www. capefearcotillion.webs.com.

It’s finally warming back up again! Our staff are always happy to host sweet parties, birthdays or any other events! Check us out on Facebook

PRODUCT REVIEW

Billy Footwear BILLY Footwear is a new line of shoes that is ideal for children with autism and sensory issues. These kids shoes that are a cross between Converse and VANS, zip up and are super easy to get on and off. They were created by an individual who is paralyzed, and carry his namesake -BILLY Footwear. They are perfect for those with special needs who might not be able to tie shoes as they help with fine motor and self help skills. Zippers run along the side of the shoes and around the toe, allowing the upper portion of each shoe to open and fold over completely. Kiddos can simply place their feet onto the shoe footbed unobstructed. Check these out at www.billyfootwear.com.

Spoon Guru Spoon Guru is a new, free app which helps consumers who are either following a diet for health reasons (lactose intolerant, coeliac, etc) or personal reasons (vegan, low sugar, etc) find the right choices for them by scanning barcodes in supermarkets and at home to make sure the product is right for their needs or suggesting alternatives. Spoon Guru also breaks down the macros and micro nutrients for each recipe, great for those in a fitness regime. Whatever the individual food requirements may be, Spoon Guru finds food for every body. When shopping, the app’s barcode scanner reads a product barcode to identify what the consumer can and cannot eat. The same search process has created tens of thousands of recipes.

World Water Day Bottle Continuing its mission of offering hydration with a purpose, d.stil is announcing its latest collaboration – the d.stil World Water Day Straw Top - with 100% of the proceeds from this bottle being donated directly back to Water.org. This new bottle became available at www.drinkdstil.com on World Water Day and 100% of proceeds will be donated to Water.org in honor of world water importance. Designed with a discreet straw top lid which I have found convenient, but learned quickly will overflow if you fill too close to the top. However, the large opening makes it easy to infuse your water and quickly clean. I also love that it is BPA free and leak proof. v

FARMERS MARKET FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY By Sara Barry

F

armers markets are cropping up all over and are a great way to stock up on fresh local produce, but they can be a fun family outing too. If you haven’t made a farmer’s market visit part of your regular routine, you may just want to add it in.

Where and When Riverfront Farmers Market - Downtown Wilmington on Saturdays, 8am-1pm Carolina Beach Farmers Market - Begins May 27th - Around the lake on Saturdays, 8am-1pm Wrightsville Beach Farmers Market - Begins May 14th - Next to Town Hall on Mondays, 8am-1pm Wilmington Farmers Market - Tidal Creek on Saturdays, 8am-1pm Poplar Grove Farmers Market - Begins April 18th - Hampstead on Wednesdays, 8am-1pm

Things You Can Do at Farmers Markets Discover new foods. You’ll find plenty of green beans and lettuce and tomatoes at most markets (in season, of course), but you’ll also find items you may not have enjoyed yet. Have you ever had celeriac or husk cherries? Ask questions: What is that? What does it taste like? How would you cook it? Choose something new to take home. Seek out a rainbow. See if you can find and buy a full rainbow. This may be easier in some seasons than in others, but by looking around you will discover foods in colors you never expected: black radishes, green tomatoes, purple carrots, blue potatoes. Get growing. If you want to grow your own garden, farmers markets often have seedlings to get started. Ask vendors for advice on planting and growing the plants you are choosing. Have a scavenger hunt. Give your kids a list of things to look for while you shop. Think a red fruit, a green vegetable, the biggest vegetable, the smallest one, a fungus, an animal product. Remind them to be aware of other shoppers and to point out items rather than grab. Which part of the plant? The fruits and vegetables we eat make up many different plant parts. For example, we eat the seeds of peas, the roots of carrots, the leaves of lettuce, the stem of celery, the flowers of broccoli, and the fruit (along with the seeds they contain) of cucumber. See how many different parts of plants you can find for sale. How many different plant parts do you like to eat? Make a meal. Going to the farmers market with a list of specific ingredients can be an exercise in frustration. Maybe the peaches aren’t ripe yet or they sold out of spinach. Instead, try going with a looser list: salad, fruit. See how many items for your meal you can get from the farmers market and supplement at home. Two ways to use almost anything you find: make pizza and top it with market veggies or use veggies and eggs and cheese from the market to make an omelet. v Sara Barry is a writer, gardener, and lover of seasonal foods. She loves the farmers market to help get her garden started, fill in the gaps of things she doesn’t grow, bring her fresh produce in the dead of winter, and introduce her kids to veggies they might not try otherwise.

S

ometimes when you’re parenting you just don’t have all the answers. Nothing makes sense and things don’t always add up. Here I present to you some parenting math word problems, and I’m curious to see your answers. No cheating off the parent next to you! Come up with your own solutions, please. 1. If 2 kids raise their hands to go here and 3 raise their hands to go there, how many tears were shed by the ones who did not get to go where they wanted? 2. If the household runs the dishwasher twice a day and the washing machine once a day for one month straight, how many hours will the parents have to work to pay the electric bill? Bonus: How old will the kids be when they are able to clean the house while mom eats her Dove chocolates in the tub while watching Netflix or listening to an audiobook? 3. Mom spent 5 hours scraping wallpaper in the kitchen. She spent 2 hours washing and sanding one wall in said kitchen. How long will it be before she stops procrastinating putting on the spackle? When she DOES spackle the joint, how badly might she mess it up? How sick of waiting for someone else to do it was she? 4. Mom spends $123 at the discount grocery store, $132 at the big box store and $21 at the regular store on grocery shopping for two weeks of eatin’. How much faster did the grocery shopping get done without children? 5. If X, Y and Z activities (drama, soccer, Scouts) are all going on at the same time in the same week, each week, calculate the trajectory of exactly when and where Mom will lose her mind. 6. Calculate the distance between your house and the nearest Starbucks. The nearest liquor store. The nearest chocolate shop. Now figure how much it will cost for Uber to take you to all three. Better yet, when will Starbucks join Ubereats? 7. If your son invites over one friend and your daughter invites over two friends, how quickly will the food in your home disappear and how long until someone is accidentally injured while roughhousing? Bonus: where is the nearest store where you can purchase earplugs? 8. If a vacuum cleaner is around 70 decibels, and you have to vacuum four times a week to make your house look halfway decent because you have twin toddlers running around all day long with crackers, how long will you have to save to hire a maid service? Bonus: calculate the shock and horror on the face of said maid when he/she arrives. v Kerrie McLoughlin is a homeschooling mom of five who just moved from the city to the country and lives to tell about it at TheKerrieShow.com.

FAMILY TRAVEL

SPECIAL NEEDS HIKING GIVEAWAY

Y

ou may have heard of a hiker that came through our area a couple of months ago, she was hiking across our state’s Mountains to Sea Trail, but did you know she did that while continuing to breastfeed her young son? Jennifer Pharr Davis is a hiker, author, speaker, and National Geographic Adventurer of the Year who has covered over 14,000 miles of long distance trails on six different continents. In 2011, Jennifer covered the 2,185-mile Appalachian Trail in forty-six days, eleven hours, and twenty minutes, maintaining a remarkable average of forty-seven miles per day. By doing this, she claimed the overall (male or female) fastest known time on the “A.T.” and became the first woman to set the mark. During her hike across over a thousand miles of North Carolina terrain, she enjoyed her husband and children’s help and company along the way. Now Jennifer wants to share the outdoors with people who may think they can not enjoy a hike to the top of a mountain or to see a waterfall.

Blue Ridge Hiking Company Jennifer founded Blue Ridge Hiking Company to share her love and knowledge of hiking and to expose people to the majestic beauty of the southern Appalachian mountains. Blue Ridge Hiking Company's skilled guides hold a high degree of experience, regional knowledge, and professional expertise. They work with beginners and revel in creating a challenge for more adventurous clients.

The Giveaway Blue Ridge Hiking Company is celebrating their 10 Year Anniversary, and they would like to give back to the community, while learning to be better guides. For their Tenth Anniversary they are offering 10 Free Day Hikes to individuals with special needs or concerns. “As wonderful is our team is

at Blue Ridge Hiking Company, most of us don’t know what it is like to be on the trail while also managing cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, dialysis, type-2 diabetes, a service animal, a child with down syndrome, or regular chemo treatments. But we would like to learn.” says Jennifer. They want to show their favorite secret trails and hideaways in the mountains surrounding Asheville, but in return they hope that these individuals can share how to better assist and help folks with similar concerns. They are willing to customize a hike to meet the needs of their guests, regardless of whether that means bringing special foods, walking a tenth of a mile to watch the sunset, or helping to tote a crying toddler in the company kid carrier. So if you are going through circumstances that make your hiking experience different or unique, Send an email to info@ blueridgehikingco.com. Tell them if you have always dreamed about setting foot on the Appalachian Trail, taking pictures of waterfalls, or sitting quietly on top of a mountain. They will try to help you fulfill your hiking dreams while they learn to make hiking enjoyable and accessible for everyone at every phase of life. OUR PETS

Finding the Right Dog for Your Family You have decided to introduce a new member to your family. You are fully prepared for the financial, time and energy responsibilities involved with bringing a furry friend into you metaphorical pack. But how do you choose the perfect fit? Where to Look? Shelters and rescues are the best places. If you are looking for a specific breed, a rescue organization is the way to go. If not, there are plenty of dogs available in shelters. A good shelter will accept their dogs back at any point no matter what the reason. This shows that they are truly invested in the well-being of a dog’s life, and that, if anything crazy were to happen in your life, your beloved pet would be taken care of. Pick the Right Age Puppies are fluffy, clumsy, and by far, the sweetest thing on this planet. But puppies are a lot of work. The first few months with a little puppy is like the first few months with a baby. You wake up throughout the night to take them outside to go potty. You have to watch them at all times to make sure they aren’t getting into things. The benefit is, however, in the end you have a dog that you have raised. They will know what you taught them and be completely used to the way you do things. Adult can go from just under a year to five or six years old. There is a lot of variety in dog energy and personality between these ages. Young adult dogs often end up in shelters because people tire of their pups once they grow out of the puppy phase. When dogs grow up, they continue to need exercise and attention, but without that puppy charm, people decide they no longer want them. By adopting an adult dog, you are definitely saving his or her life. Adult dogs, obviously, have a much harder time finding a home than puppies The Right Fit Children and other pets in the house should be highly considered when choosing a dog. Bring children with you to choose the pup. This will allow you to see how both the dog and kids interact before they come home with you. If you have another dog, most shelters will allow and encourage a meet and greet between the two dogs before any final adoptions take place. Other pets like cats or birds should be mentioned to adoption counselors.

TIPS FOR PLAYDATES

SPECIAL SECTION: Special Needs

By Sarah Lyons

P

laydates are an important part of childhood. They offer time for kids to interact socially without the structure of school or extracurricular activities. They also help kids learn to share, socialize, and play freely while still having support from their parents as needed. Kids with special needs are no exception and benefit from playdates as much as their peers. While they may take a little more planning and patience, it is well worth the efforts for everyone involved. Here are some tips for hosting a playdate with kids with disabilities.

Be open Our natural reaction may be to avoid talking about any disabilities a child may have but it is better to address any questions or concerns beforehand so everyone is more comfortable and knows what to expect. It is also a good idea to talk to your children openly about differences they may have with their friends. Explain that just because others may seem different or express their joy differently, it doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy playdates or making new friends as well. Prior to the playdate, it is also a good idea to check in with the other parents about whether there are any food allergies or restrictions and anything important you should know.

Be strategic Prior to the playdate, discuss with the other parents about what would be the best location to have the playdate. For some, their own home is more comfortable and successful. For others, staying at home may encourage the special needs child to say hello then retreat to their room while company visits. In this case, it may be better to go to a public place that everyone can enjoy, such as a park, museum, or zoo. On the other hand, parents who have a child that is prone to running away or hiding may find a public place overwhelming. Discuss your plans with all the parents involved and come up with the best solution for everyone.

16 | April 2018 | Wilmington Parent

Be patient Try to understand that kids may have different reactions to situations, things may not go exactly as expected, and that it may take some time for kids with special needs to warm up to the situation. Some children with special needs may prefer to participate in parallel play. Parallel play is when kids play beside each other, but do not interact with one another. Children who play alone during parallel play still enjoy the time together and are usually interested in what the other children are doing. If things do not go as planned, it is okay to cut the playdate short and try again in the future.

Be inclusive It is most important to note that kids with disabilities or special needs are just like anyone else; they want to interact with friends and be loved and appreciated. When hosting a playdate with kids with disabilities it’s important to greet them and interact with them as you would anyone else you meet. Even if the child is nonverbal or doesn’t seem to hear you, it is important to speak to them. If the child with special needs does something your child isn’t happy with or that isn’t appropriate, allow them to use words to tell them. Sometimes that is more powerful than the adults intervening.

Be understanding Parenting is not easy and we all struggle with different challenges when it comes to our children. Ask the parent if they need help with anything prior to the playdate. Try to be patient and understanding. The other parent may be overwhelmed or tired. It may have been challenging to get there. All parents have great days where everything goes as planned and tough days where it seems nothing does. Listen and offer a hand when needed and they will most likely offer the same in return. v

YOUR HEALTH

FINDING a Depression Therapist

F

inding the right therapist for your depression can mean the difference between surviving and thriving. Every person has different needs, and you should always start with talking to your regular doctor before beginning any additional medical care.

Types of Therapists Several types of mental health professionals can serve as a therapist for people with depression. Being aware of the training differences might help you narrow your search. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have completed specialized training in mental and emotional disorders. They can diagnose, treat, and prescribe medications for depression. Psychiatrists may also provide individual or group therapy. Psychologists have a doctoral degree in psychology. They are skilled in the diagnosis of emotional disorders and spend most of their time providing individual or group psychotherapy, but do not prescribe medication. Social workers usually have a master’s degree in social work and have training in providing individual or group therapy. Licensed professional counselors have a master’s degree in psychology (or a related area) and are trained to diagnose and counsel individuals or groups.

Questions to Ask During an Initial Consultation It is always best to have an initial consultation with a therapist to determine if they will be a good fit for your needs. Here are some questions to ask during that first visit: • What type of therapy would you recommend for my depression symptoms? • What will this type of therapy involve? • What are the benefits and the primary goals of my depression treatment? • Are you willing to work with other members of my medical team to coordinate my depression treatment? This is especially important if you have a non-MD therapist who will rely on your primary care doctor to prescribe medications. • How often would I need therapy sessions? Some people will improve with psychotherapy alone; others may need both psychotherapy and a prescription antidepressant. Once you start therapy for your depression, be patient. Psychotherapy (sometimes referred to as talk therapy) for depression can sometimes be painful, and you may find yourself doing most of the talking during the first few sessions. Your therapist will partner with you to ease your depression symptoms and improve your life. v Source: Everyday Health

See Something, Say Something In light of the recent tragedy in Parkland, Florida, New Hanover County Schools is launching a new innovative initiative to support students and help them express their concerns about this tragedy and school safety. See Something, Say Something The See Something, Say Something Campaign is designed to build awareness about dangerous acts that may be shared with individuals or on social media. It is designed to empower students with information on recognizing inappropriate conduct by peers and adults and encourage the reporting of bullying and harassment. A series of class discussions along with a marketing campaign will help deliver the program to students. Some examples of when students would be encouraged to see something and say something: • • • • •
