THE BRICKFIELD EXCHANGE

Taylor’s University, Semester V

December 2O23

Community Centre Design

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

(Project was selected for SABD Student work sharing and external review)

This and all was making were and the the history building

was a continuination from the masterplan propoal, this project was the culmination of my fifth semester all that I have learned into creating a Community Centre in the heart of Kuala lumpur, the site proposed located in brickfields. Brickfields, a neighborhood in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, got its name from the brickmaking activities that used to be prevalent in the area. Brickfields was one of the primary areas where bricks were produced, supplying the necessary building materials for the growing city. The abundance of brick kilns the prominence of brick production in the area led to the name “Brickfields For this Project I was inspired by history of brick making,I wanted to recall the history and its significance in the making of Kuala Lumpur; the building would also serve as place for community and cultural exchange for the people

GREEN STRATEGIES

Introducing green strategies by focusing my design in a way within the community in Brickfield. These strategies include Natural rooftops to provide insulation, mitigate the urban heat island Engangement.

STRATEGIES

that minimizes environmental impact and promotes sustainability Natural Ventilation and Rooftop Garden: by Installing vegetation on effect. the Rooftop gardens also served as an activitiy for community

BRICKFIELD’S IDENTITY

For this project I wanted to highlight the brick making process which is so crucial to the identity of brickfield, it is the raison d’etre. by bring back the Kiln as the centre structure to provides natural lighting to enhance visibility and highlight specific areas, such as the Lobby, workstation and open spaces. the Kiln allows people to see into different sections of the community centre without compromising safety. open spaces allow viewing areas where people can observe the vibrant urban life of brickfield. Easy movement and circulation within the kiln.

THE HEART OF P3KU

Taylor’s University, Semester IV

July 2023

Urban Farming Centre Design

Subang Jaya, Malaysia

The project was the culmination of my fourth semester and all the knowledge I had acquired into creating an Urban Farming Centre based on cluster typology. I seeked to continue the idea of circular Ecosystem and Universal Design; of which such ends come with added thought on userbase, programm, spatial experience and structure with the hopes of fulfilling said ideas. to suit the more natural site, it was thought that timber, that being Glulam Timber was best in fulfilling my design needs. warm to the touch, expressive and natural are such thoughts that come in mind when i innitially designed the timber structure. I learned much regarding the working of timber and a structure that can best look natural and fit the puzzle pieces.

In the end The Heart of P3KU was visionary endeavor that seeks to engender inclusivity and community engagement through purposefully designed spaces. The integration of essential facilities, such as the local market, represents a deliberate effort to beckon the community, enticing them not only to partake in the purchase and sale of locally grown produce but also to immerse themselves in the ethos of permaculture that pulsates at the core of P3KU. Anchoring the educational aspect of the project, the classroom and harvest room serve as experiential platforms that empower and inspire individuals within the community.

Through practical demonstrations and immersive learning experiences, P3KU fosters self-sufficiency, equipping communities with the knowledge and tools necessary to cultivate their own nourishment, and thus fostering the establishment of sustainable urban farms within their immediate environs, thereby extending the reach of the project to their very households and neighborhoods.
