The Neptune Brief...

To Design a modular seating system that has been sustainably designed yet has a modern and glamorous aesthetic.

The Neptune range is designed to suit the consumers own home, with the ability to choose pieces out of the range that suits them.

Neptune

Inspiration & Ideation

Initial inspiration was from high end sofa designs, however I wanted to create something that was also homely. Inspiration included a balance between a variety of styles.

Concept Ideas

Various concept ideas, from sketchwork to colour renders created in photoshop.

Chosen design to be developed.

Solidworks

Frame Development was conducted using solidworks. Multiple amendments were made to maximise the comfort and sit of the design of the sofa.

Sustainable Development

Due to the modular sofa being sustainable it was key that this was developed very closely alongside the design. The kit chosen was eco - much of which has been created from recycled bottles collected off beaches. Quallofil Blue - An eco-friendly filling fibre made from 50% recycled plastic from ‘PlasticBank’.

Repreve - A recycled fibre that is used throughout upholstery fabric. The fibre has been created using plastic bottles. The timber for the frame was also sustainably sourced and compliant with FSC.

Development

With the design chosen, Whitemeadow Furniture, my placement company helped to manufacture a full scale 1:1 prototype of 1 of the pieces out of the range.

A modern & Glamorous seating system that is Modular, Sustainable and British made.

2.

The Gatsby

This project was completed when I was on my placement year from Sept 2019-Sept 2020 with Whitemeadow Furniture based in Sutton-In-Ashfield.

The Gatsby Brief...

To Design a bed based off an existing frame, with a more modern, appealing aesthetic to consumers.

Other than the design of the frame, it was an open brief as there were no other constraints.

Go see this image on the Barker & Stonehouse website under the name ‘Astrid’.

Inspiration & Ideation

Based off the original bed design named Lyla, researching different detailing on the headboards of beds led to various sketches and line drawings of designs that could be developed. The use of simple detailing to create an aesthetic flair really inspired The Gatsby design.

Concept Ideas

Various concept ideas, rendered up in a variety of fabric colours to add artistic and aesthetic flair to the designs.

Chosen design to be developed.

Development

With the concept design chosen, it got made up in a silver fabric with a new silver plastic piping, however due to the loss of impact this had when made, the fabric was changed to a plush velvet and the piping changed to impacting gold.

The Gatsby

The final design featured on the Whitemeadow Furniture stand at the January Furniture show 2020 in the NEC, Birmingham.

3.

The Porto Brief...

To Design a modern contemporary side table using new and different materials.

Porto

Inspiration & Ideation

Initially inspired by Mid-Century Modern, the design chose a more modern aesthetic, using different materials, achieving a clean yet detailed design.

The product is aimed at first time buyers, and more specifically to be placed in the living area.

Concept Ideas

Throughout the concept stages of the project, a variety of sketches were produced aiming to contain the ‘hairpin’ leg feature - a classic yet still modern element used within furniture design.

Development

After making smaller 1/5 scale models, keyshot renders were created to show a more realistic view of the aesthetics of the side table.

Throughout develop, it was realised the materials being used were also sustainable and renewable, giving the product a further entice the buyer There was development with the storage bag in terms of sizes and details more specifically, whether it would be manufactured using one piece of fabric or two.

Prototype model built 1/2 scale using the materials that would be used in manufacture.

Porto

The final design of Porto, a modern, contemporary design, featuring cork and hessian, two sustainable and renewable fabrics.

4.

The Isokon Donkey Brief

To Design a modern day Isokon Donkey to suit millenials.

The constraints to the brief were it had to be manufactured out of plywood, and a minimum of two pieces had to be CNC cut.

Isokon Donkey

Inspiration & Ideation

Taking inspiration from the original donkeys, the points that were focused on throughout this project were what happens throughout everyday life now compared to 1939.

Technology is a key aspect throughout consumers lives today but still the use of books and magazines. I decided this was going to be the main purpose of the donkey being designed.

Development

Initial sketches of designs were drawn and then small 1:10 scale models were created with small props to show the function and size. Throughout development, the design took on a ‘basket’ style when being picked up, making it easy to be moved from room to room to suit the consumer.

Solidworks

Throughout the development of the solidworks model, there were areas that needed to be perfect, ready for the CNC machine.

The design was then rendered up in keyshot to show what it will look like before it was manufactured.

Asina

The final design named Asina, which holds and stores books and magazines as well as technology for the modern day home.

5.

The SCP Brief...

To design a small stand-alone piece of furniture that is seen as affordable and carry-away ‘impulse’ buys.

SCP Project

Inspiration & Ideation

Inspired by smaller side tables and the mixture of metal and wood to create a classic yet modern aesthetic.

Some key inspiration was taken from the company ‘Menuspace.com’, and the designer Alvar Alto for the use of flowing smooth shapes created with plywood.

Development

Rough shapes were created for the side table. Once a shape had been found that could be developed, the design was developed by making 1:10 scale models.

Mesa

A modern, contemporary side table for the living area with a detachable tray for ease when having friends over.

A collection of renders from my placement year with whitemeadow.

Renders

Renders from the beginning of my placement.

A range of renders for various clients and companies that came in asking for particular designs and styles.

The renders are created by drawing the sofa on Photoshop and then using various paint tools to shade and render the sofa in the desired colour.

Fabrics could also be imposed onto the drawing of the sofa or piece of furniture. For example, these renders were used for the January Furniture Show on the Orla Kiely stand, showing customers what their product could look like with the certain fabrics on.
