MHC is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and is affiliated with the Archdiocese of Winnipeg. Our directors use their collective expertise to translate the motto of the Misericordia SistersCompassion of the Heart for Those in Need - into provision of health care to the communities we serve.

Caroline DeKeyster President and CEO
Misericordia Health Centre provides services to all nations on the traditional and ancestral lands of the Anishinaabeg, Ininiwak, Anishininewak, DakotaOyate, Dene, Inuit and the national homeland of the Red River Métis. Treaties were created with the First Nations and include past, present and future inhabitants, so we are all treaty people. MHC serves those on Treaty 1 lands. We acknowledge the five Dakota communities in Manitoba that are not signatories to any treaties with Canada. We acknowledge that Winnipeg takes its drinking water from Shoal Lake 40 First Nation. We acknowledge that the acts of colonization which are part of our history have caused deep, lasting harm, which continues today. We commit ourselves, in a good way, to learning about truth and reconciliation, promote healing and creating a better future for all.
Health care that incorporates faith-based values is what sets Misericordia Health Centre apart. New staff receive education about these values. Their ability to do their job and make their contribution from this perspective is what makes them valuable members of the Misericordia Health Centre team, which we affectionately call the Misericordia Family.
By emulating the Misericordia Sisters’ five core values, our staff truly lives our Mission.
Being injured, ill or experiencing a life event such as the death of a loved one can be very frightening. The numerous questions that need to be answered, the overwhelming emotions that can surface and the ways these life-changing events can impact those we love can make us feel lonely and helpless.
Misericordia Health Centre staff consider it a privilege to be of service during these difficult times. We consider what it might be like for our residents, patients, family and friends. We ask questions so we understand other perspectives and experiences and we do everything we can to find answers.
Each and every person in the Misericordia Family can impact a patient or resident’s experience. From providing healthy meals to keeping rooms clean, from bedside care to establishing a treatment plan, we use our resources to the best of our ability to care for our residents and patients. This includes listening to what they have to say and doing our best to honour their needs, preferences and values.
Misericordia staff are committed to treating everyone with respect and dignity. That means we explain what we’re going to do before we do it. We want our residents and patients to tell us how they are feeling at all times. From talking and listening to touching and treatment, we are committed to treating everyone gently.
We want everyone to feel welcome while they’re with us. It is the details that make a person feel welcome because they demonstrate thoughtfulness. Sometimes the simplest thing - being greeted or having a sense of routine - can empower someone when they feel their most powerless.
If our patients and residents understand what they’re experiencing and why, it can help empower them. If we understand how our patients and residents are feeling physically and emotionally, we can adjust their health-care plans to meet their specific needs. By sharing important information, we all learn.
We also follow the Misericordia Sisters’ value of companioning, literally. Not sure how to find your way at Misericordia? We will walk with you to your destination.

MHC’s Eye Care Centre of Excellence, open 24/7 for eye emergencies, is the largest comprehensive surgical and treatment program in Western Canada serving Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario, the Territories and Nunavut. Nearly 30 staff surgical ophthalmologists perform more than 13,000 eye surgeries annually, including sight-restoring corneal transplants.
More than 40,000 patients are assessed and treated annually in ambulatory eye clinics in the Buhler Eye Care Centre. Highly specialized eye clinics include pediatric, neuro-ophthalmic, macular degeneration and retinal – where intravitreal injections are used to administer medications to treat a variety of retinal conditions. The clinics offer testing such as fluorescein angiography and eye ultrasound.
Ophthalmologists provide 24-hour on-call services with 14 ophthalmology assessment unit in-patient beds.
Complementing the Eye Care Centre of Excellence is the University of Manitoba Ophthalmology Residency Program which includes a resident clinic and wet lab for residents to practice surgical skills, a critical component of residency training.

MHC’s provincial Sleep Disorder Centre is the largest in Canada with centralized referrals coming in from across the province. The SDC consists of the sleep disorders diagnostic laboratory as well as the sleep clinic and treatment service.
The centre treats more than 10,000 patients each year, including over 2,600 day and overnight sleep studies and over 2,200 home sleep studies annually. A referral process determines if a patient needs a full sleep study or if a course of care can be achieved with a clinic visit.
Patients come to us for help for sleep disorders that can have a profound impact in their health and well-being, including narcolepsy, insomnia and breathing problems during sleep.
The Sleep Disorder Centre has 10 beds and conducts sleep studies seven nights a week. Data is collected by a polysomnographer, including heart rate, respiratory effort and oxygen saturation. A patient may be woken during the study and provided with a ventilator or other device and allowed to sleep again so further data can be collected.
Following a study, sleep physician specialists from the University of Manitoba’s Section of Respirology, Department of Medicine, review patient data and plan a treatment program. Treatment may also be developed in collaboration with the WRHA Clinical Health Psychology Department.
Patients may receive medication or portable devices they can use at home. Many sleep with a ventilator that aids their breathing and provides much-needed, peaceful sleep.
Treatment usually begins within six weeks from the start of the study.

Misericordia Health Centre’s 119-bed Transitional Care Unit ( TCU) serves clients who require an extended recovery time and restorative care following an acute-care medical or surgical admission. TCU clients receive complex therapeutic, nursing and allied health support for a limited period of time with a focus on discharge planning at the time of admission.
Clients come to the TCU as a transfer from a hospital, from another facility or from the community.
Restorative care promotes clients’ ability to adapt and adjust to living as independently and safely as possible. The health-care team focuses on a holistic approach to improve the physical, mental and social functioning of clients. TCU staff provide care, treatment and services in a way that respects and fosters clients’ dignity and autonomy.
Clients are eligible for TCU when they are medically stable and are not at risk for rapid medical decline. TCU clients no longer require the care which is provided in an acute-care hospital and do not require ongoing intensive rehabilitation.
During the TCU short-term stay, clients receive on-going intervention with the goal of returning home as soon as possible. Working together with the client and family, we will develop a goal for discharge within 14 days of admission. If returning home is not possible the plan will include looking at other options.
TCU clients are cared for by an interprofessional team that includes nurses, health-care aides, unit clerks, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, social workers, rehabilitation aides, dietitians, spiritual health practitioners, recreation facilitators/therapist and volunteers. Clients also have access to pharmacy technicians, representatives from Indigenous health services, speech language pathologists and mental health clinicians. Physicians are present on the units twice per week and available as needed through the unit staff.
Misericordia’s Clinical Resource Team responds to medical emergencies on site. Clients may be transferred to an acute-care hospital if change to medical needs require.

Here are some ways to provide feedback to MHC:
1. In-person/by phone: We encourage you to speak directly to a health-care professional in your program area. MHC also has a patient representative who can be reached at: 204-788-8003.
2. Fill out the “We Care What You Think” survey: Misericordia Health Centre welcomes feedback from patients, residents and their families, as well as from visitors and staff about quality of care and services.
The “We Care What You Think” forms are located in prominent places throughout Misericordia, to share your compliments, suggestions for improvements, complaints and comments. You can also visit us at misericordia. mb.ca to fill out this form online. The information you provide is confidential. It will help us to track and resolve patient and family concerns that arise in the context of care and service delivery as well as share compliments. Tracking compliments and complaints is an important tool in the continuous improvement of care and services. Positive feedback is equally useful in planning for the future and in providing recognition and support for the work we do.
Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback.
3. Fill out the “WRHA Service Experience” survey at wrha.mb.ca/ experience-survey.
4. Patient/Family Experience Survey: We may ask patients and/or their families to share their opinion about care received by completing a Patient/ Family Experience Survey. Surveys are provided throughout the year and responses are confidential. Feedback is used to evaluate the care and services, and to improve how we provide care in the future.
This Winnipeg Health Region patient safety initiative encourages staff, patients and families to report patient safety events, such as a patient who has fallen and may have a fractured hip. At Misericordia, this process allows for a Critical Incident Review Committee to review the facts associated with the incident and make recommendations for implementation to prevent the same event from reoccurring.
If you’ve witnessed a patient safety event, please call the 24-Hour Patient Safety Line at 204-788-8222. Whether you are a health-care provider, patient or family member, you can help make the patientcare system safer.

Germs are everywhere and most are spread by hand contact. Whether healthy or ill, at home, in hospital, or in a personal care home, proper hand hygiene is one of the single most important ways to stop the spread of infection. Hand hygiene is important for everyone; you, your loved ones, and the healthcare providers who care for you. It’s okay to ask your health care providers and/or your friends and family to clean their hands. While health care providers are aware of the importance of hand hygiene, they will appreciate the reminder, and you will help keep everyone safe and healthy. Health care providers may also ask you if you have performed proper hand hygiene.
Both soap and water, or hand sanitizers can reduce the number of germs found on hands.
• Wet hands under warm running water.
• Apply soap and distribute over hands.
• Rub hands together vigorously for 15 seconds to create a good lather.
• Using friction, cover all hand surfaces including fingernails, between fingers, thumbs and wrists.
• Rinse under warm running water.
• Dry hands gently and thoroughly with a disposable towel.
• Using a clean disposable towel, turn off faucet.

Not all decisions or conflicts are ethical, but many are in health care. Ethics is about doing the right thing. Sometimes, it’s hard to know what that is. Careful thought and discussion can help. Ethics is a systematic way for making difficult decisions. Solving problems takes careful thought and discussion. You do not have to do it alone. There are tools, resources and strategies and supportive colleagues that can help.
Every day there are choices we make: some are routine and some are much more difficult. MHC’s Health Ethics Committee enhances the care/lives of patients, families and staff by facilitating sound ethical decision-making consistent with MHC’s Mission, vision, and values.
The ethics committee is available to:
• Patients who may have concerns about the appropriateness of their care
• Families and substitute decision-makers who may be called upon to provide direction to the care team based on the needs, values and preferences of the person they represent
• Staff, physicians, volunteers and legal advocates seeking to navigate their way through difficult options
An ethics consultation is meant to help patients families and staff identify issues they are facing and develop recommendations for consideration. These recommendations are offered as guides for the parties involved, not mandatory decisions. The most common reasons for asking for a consultation are:
• End-of-life care
• Consent and capacity of patients
• Disagreement about a patient’s goals
• Role of the substitute decision-maker
• Competing demands for resources
Anyone can ask for a free, confidential consultation. Please fill out the reverse side and choose a return option:

Since 1983 Misericordia Health Centre Foundation has been proud to support Misericordia Health Centre (MHC) as it plays a vital role in meeting the evolving healthcare needs of Manitobans.
Today MHC offers exceptional, highly-specialized health care. We are home to Manitoba’s Eye Care Centre of Excellence, Sleep Disorder Centre and the Provincial Health Contact Centre, featuring Health Links-Info Santé which provides bilingual triage, assessment and care advice 24/7/365. We are also home to care streams responding to vital community needs such as diversified care for older adults, community IV, pediatric dental surgery, and brain injury rehabilitation.
Generous support from our community of donors only helps to strengthen MHC’s capacity to continue offering this level of innovative and compassionate care.
We invite you to join us in supporting MHC through our signature events – Misericordia’s Golf Classic, InVision Gala, and Angel Squad!
Additionally, through our Grateful Patients or Grateful Hearts program, patients, residents, and their families have an opportunity to show gratitude to those who played a special role in the care they received while at MHC, or provide a meaningful tribute to an important person or a momentous occasion while supporting the excellent care that only MHC can offer Manitobans.
Your support helps to make a positive impact on the lives of residents, patients, and all those who walk through Misericordia’s doors.
