Welcome to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre This handbook is an overview of the Bayview campus and some of the many services that we offer. It’s a big place and it can be overwhelming. We hope that this handbook provides you, your family and friends with the information needed during your time in hospital. Please feel welcome to talk to any staff member if you have questions or concerns. Caring for you is our number one priority.
Who we are Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is one of Canada’s largest and most dynamic hospitals. The hospital’s 12,000 staff, physicians and volunteers provide the best care for critical times in the lives of the 1 million patients Sunnybrook sees each year. Since 1948, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre has evolved from its original role as a Veterans’ hospital into a centre of excellence in patient care, education and research. Today, Sunnybrook plays an important role in the Ontario health care system and in caring for the many communities we serve through our 9 program areas: • Holland Bone and Joint Program • Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program • Integrated Community Medicine • Program • Odette Cancer Program
• Schulich Heart Program • St. John’s Rehab Program • Tory Trauma Program • Veterans Program • Women and Babies Program.
The hospital is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and provides learning opportunities for more than 4,000 students annually. Sunnybrook is also a research intensive hospital and each year the organization’s more than 600 scientists conduct $100 million in breakthrough research.
