Mrs K Beck, Librarian Our Geography Arable Farm Visit – Year 8 “On Tuesday 4 March we visited Lower Smite Farm. The whole point of the farm trip was to help us with our Geography assessment about global warming and food miles. When we arrived at the farm we were given a talk by one of the managers of the farm, called “Debs”. She told us about how the farm is used for organic food production and the importance of Arable Farming. Firstly, our group was sent to the kitchen to make bread, whilst the other group were on a tour of the farm. Sue, Group Instructor, explained how farmers traditionally collect the wheat and use this to make bread. Then we started to do this ourselves, firstly by mixing the flour with the mixture of yeast, sugar and warm water. We had a lot of fun making the different types of bread. You were allowed to design it any way you wanted! We made a plait and a pretzel shaped roll. Next we were taken to the loft room, in which we did a task on food miles. We had to measure on a map how far our food would travel to get to our local supermarkets. Surprisingly our food actually travelled about 3,000 miles in total! For the tour of the farm we had to wear wellies or boots, because it was so muddy! We looked at a very old farm house, the horses, the pond, some fields and an orchard. Sue explained all about the different functions of each part of the farm and how this helped to make it successful. The orchard was probably the nicest because it was pretty and not muddy! We would definitely recommend this trip to other pupils younger than us because it is really fun and will help with Geography assessments! Overall we had a really nice, fun and interesting day and are glad that we decided to go on this trip. We are very thankful to Mrs Howden, Mr Hunt and Mr Willetts for organising another great Geography Field Trip.” Emily Patmore, Ciara Oldham and Catherine McNamara – 8L Geography enthusiasts
